UFC Quick Quote: James Toney refuses MMA contract because 'Dana White is a ho'

Posted: 23 Feb 2010 09:53 PM PST

James_toney_loves_america_medium_medium

"Dana White is a straight up ho! He makes me a 5-fight offer for chump change and said I can't box anymore if I accept it. He must have lost his damn mind. I'm the best of both worlds. Anyone in either sport that wants to come see me, we can do this."

41-year-old NABO heavyweight boxing champion James "Lights Out" Toney (72-6-3, 44 KOs) goes off on a tangent to our amigos over at FightHype.com, blaming UFC President Dana White for an offer that basically amounts to "chump change" over the course of five fights. Perhaps White gave him an offer that was directly proportionate to his skills in mixed martial arts? Toney has been extremely vocal about getting his shot inside the Octagon as of late, probably after watching Ray Mercer put Tim Sylvia on queer street last year in Alabama and then deciding it was time to prove his pugilistic power is more than enough to squash a former YouTube star and some past-their prime headliners. But even if he does, would it warrant the multi-million dollar payday he's looking for?

Stratus Media Group resurrects ProElite for another foray into MMA

Posted: 23 Feb 2010 09:09 PM PST

Proelite-logo-2_medium

After shutting its doors in October of 2008 following its inability to secure additional funding to keep the promotion afloat, select assets of ProElite -- the parent company of EliteXC -- were auctioned off to the California-based Strikeforce promotion, leaving nothing left but the bare bones.

Now those bones have apparently reanimated and come back to life like one of the skeletons from Jason and the Argonauts. Of course they had a little help from the gang at Stratus Media Group, Inc., who gobbled up the remains of ProElite with hopes of cashing in on a suddenly lucrative MMA market.

They may not have the video library, the fighter contracts or the ratings machine known as Kimbo Slice -- but they don't have the "spend first, ask questions later" policy that doomed EliteXC either.

From Paul Feller, President and CEO of Stratus:

"This acquisition allows Stratus and ProElite to combine forces at the management and board levels of both organizations. ProElite has a globally recognized brand. We believe that by combining select key experienced management executives, who made ProElite the immediate success it was, with new top executives with demonstrated successes in conducting and televising MMA events internationally and sufficient capital, that we will achieve the brand's strategy for global growth and success. With this combination, we can start focusing on strengthening and repositioning ProElite events and the brand, planning a series of MMA events that we believe will bring excitement to the MMA market, fans and our shareholders and establish ProElite as a leading international MMA company."

Of course there is a long way to go before ProElite (or anyone not named UFC) can become a "leading International MMA company," but it's not unrealistic to think that a sound business model and responsible spending can produce a successful promotion.

My only question for this and any new mixed martial arts endeavor: Is there enough talent to go around? And no, Da-Da 5000 doesn't count.

Sengoku 12: Marlon Sandro vs Tomonari Kanomata on tap for March 7

Posted: 23 Feb 2010 05:44 PM PST

Marlon Sandro (15-1), who had a breakout year in 2009 with his strong performance in Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix, finally has an opponent for his upcoming return to action.

He will meet Cage Force and Pancrase veteran, Tomonari Kanomata (15-4-5) at Sengoku 12, which will take place on March 7 and air on HDNet in North America.

Sandro entered the Sengoku Featherweight Grand Prix undefeated and with Featherweight King of Pancrase title under his belt. In the tournament, he defeated Matt Jaggers and Nick Denis before losing a controversial split decision against the upset artist, Michihiro Omigawa.

He quickly atoned for the first and only loss of his career by dispatching Yuji Hoshino with a first-round TKO at Sengoku 11 last November. Since then, he was tapped to face Hideo Tokoro in the "DREAM vs. Sengoku" cross-promotional bout series at Dynamite!! 2009; however, an injury forced his withdrawal.

Tomonari Kanomata cut his teeth in longstanding Japanese MMA promotions, such as Shooto and Cage Force. Having competed as a lightweight for most of his career, he dropped to featherweight when he joined Pancrase last year. Since then, he has recorded two wins and two draws, including a victory over previously undefeated Shigeyuki Uchiyama.

Sengoku 12 will be headlined by the middleweight title match cum rematch between the reigning champion, Jorge Santaigo and the fast-rising Polish standout, Mamed Khalidov.

UFC responds to Frank Mir's death wish for Brock Lesnar

Posted: 23 Feb 2010 03:54 PM PST

Mirpr4501_medium

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir told WXDX radio last week that he wanted division champion Brock Lesnar to be the first mixed martial arts fighter to die from Octagon related injuries. Well, at least that's what goes through his mind when he's in fight mode, according to his statement.

Still, the comments didn't sit well with UFC President Dana White, who told Carmichael Dave’s KHTK radio show in Sacramento that Mir was "a [expletive] idiot" and that he "never heard something so unprofessional and idiotic in his life."

Mir seems to be genuinely obsessed with Brock Lesnar after getting smashed by the pasty-faced goliath at UFC 100 last July. Not that Mir ever needed a reason to talk trash, but his statements have spread like a virus, infecting most major media outlets -- including the ones that beg for a reason to slam the UFC.

After continuing to pick up steam, the UFC has released a statement offering an apology from the Las Vegas fighter:

"I would like to apologize to Brock Lesnar, his family, the UFC and the UFC fans for my stupid remarks. I respect Brock, all the other fighters, and the sport of mixed martial arts.  I’m sorry that I stepped out of line."

And a second lashing from Dana White soon followed:

"I was disappointed by Frank Mir’s comments. Frank’s been with the UFC a long time, he’s a two-time heavyweight champion and a commentator for the WEC.  I think his emotions are running high right now, he has a big fight coming up next month and he’s still upset about his loss to Lesnar.  He’s been talked to, he regrets what he said, and he won’t be saying anything like that again."

Anyone who's been following the fight game for a while knows this is vintage Mir. But regardless of the comments directed towards Lesnar, it's a bit surprising to see him still focus on the champ when he has a colossal test ahead of him in Shane Carwin at UFC 111 next month.

Will "The Engineer" make him pay for it?

WEC 48: Zack Micklewright vs Alex Karalexis on tap for April 24

Posted: 23 Feb 2010 11:51 AM PST

Micklewright-karalexis_medium
Undefeated lightweight prospect Zack Micklewright (7-0) will make his second appearance under the WEC banner when he takes on veteran Alex Karalexis (10-4) at the upcoming WEC 48 pay-per-view on April 24 from the Arco Arena, in Sacramento, California.

MMAmania.com was informed of the pending match up by the Micklewright camp earlier today.

Micklewright made his promotion debut at WEC 45 last December, out-pointing Mushin Corbbrey to bring home the unanimous decision win. Prior to that, he made a name for himself by tearing through the competition in Iowa's Glory Fighting Championship from 2008-09.

He now takes a step up in competition against the well-traveled UFC veteran Karalexis.

"T-Rex" is perhaps best known for his stint in the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter. After a disappointing 1-2 run inside the Octagon, Karalexis moved to the Zuffa sister-promotion where he found better success.

The Boston native recently rebounded from back-to-back losses by stopping Greg McIntyre at WEC 39 last year. After suffering a hand injury that kept him out of action for the remainder of the year, Karalexis is back and ready to work his way back up the 155-pound ladder in 2010.

WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber" features a featherweight championship bout between the local fan favorite "The California Kid" Urijah Faber and unstoppable 145-pound champion Jose Aldo.

Also announced for the main card is a lightweight championship brouhaha between champion Ben "Smooth" Henderson and challenger Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone. Former featherweight champion Mike Brown will also take part in the event when he enters the cage opposite Manny Gamburyan.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on this still-developing fight card.

Tim Sylvia: 'The Hinkle fight is off'

Posted: 23 Feb 2010 10:51 AM PST

Tim-sylvia1_medium

Seems like "The Maine-iac" just can't catch a break these days.

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia tweeted that he'll no longer be facing fellow Zuffa castaway Brandon Lee Hinkle at the upcoming Adrenaline MMA show planned for March 20 in Youngstown, Ohio.

This comes just one week after the Ohio Athletic Commission denied Wes Sims the chance to rematch Sylvia at the same event because the bout was deemed 'non-competitive.'

"Something else is in the works," promises the former Affliction headliner.

After exiting the UFC in the wake of his loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 81, Sylvia went on to get steamrolled by Fedor Emelianenko in his Affliction debut in July 2008. He then tried to mail it in against boxer-turned-MMA fighter Ray Mercer almost a year later and was knocked silly in just nine seconds.

He restored himself to the winning column with a first-round TKO victory over Jason Riley at the Adrenaline MMA 4 event in September 2009. Though he broke his right hand in the bout, the injury has reportedly fully healed.

Now he looks to make it two in a row -- if he can find someone to answer the call.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for further updates regarding the upcoming Adrenaline MMA show as they develop.

Elvis Sinosic: 'I will most likely need a complete shoulder reconstruction'

Elvis-sinosic-2_medium_medium

Props: Pro MMA Now

Quoteworthy:

"I injured my shoulder severely on the weekend during my last sparring session ... it just escalated to the point that it was too much. I just was not able to use my right shoulder/arm to it’s full ability. Once I learned of the extent of the damage I informed the UFC. They arranged their own doctor to look at it, organized for a cortisone shot. The cortisone shot did not help at all sadly. It turns out that I have a couple of underlying problems with my shoulder. Basically I have tendinitis, bone spurs which have lead to chronic Osteoathritis and on top of that Adhesive Capsulitis, known as "frozen shoulder". There could also be further damage but I will need an MRI or key hole surgery to determine the full extent. The specialist informed me that I had about 40-50% use of my right arm. It was very emotional, I was very upset. I felt extremely disappointed and felt like I was letting a lot of people down. It was a very difficult decision to make. The next step is to follow up with my surgeon and look into my surgery options. I was informed that key hole surgery will alleviate a lot of my problems but not give me one-hundred percent use of the shoulder. Key hole surgery will also help determine the extent of any further damage. I will most likely need a complete shoulder reconstruction, if not now, at least down the track."

Australian MMA pioneer Elvis Sinosic (8-11-2) talks about the shoulder injury that forced him to withdraw from the UFC 110 event last Saturday night (Feb. 20) at the Acer Arena in Sydney. The "King of Rock n Rumble" was scheduled to rematch Chris Haseman on the undercard of the event; however, the UFC was unable to find a suitable replacement and chose to scrap the bout altogether. The UFC has talked about returning to the Outback next year and even make it an annual stop but with Sinosic's lingering injuries this may have been the last chance the 39-year-old fighter had to mix it up inside the Octagon since parting ways with the promotion on the heels of his UFC 70 loss to Michael Bisping.

UFC Quick Quote: Paulo Thiago 'not ready yet' to face Georges St. Pierre

"The UFC guys said I’m starting to shine, but I have to continue. My division is big. I don’t know if I have to wait for another fight. I’m not worried about (the title) yet. On the right time the UFC will give me the chance. I’m getting experience, feeling more comfortable. I’m not ready yet. St. Pierre is very smart, it’s going to be a chess game. Who gets calmer to annul the game of the other, takes it. He works a lot of takedown defense, the ground, the guard... You have to exchange with him, be aggressive. There are a lot of ways to prepare."

Up-and-coming UFC welterweight Paulo Thiago talks to Tatame.com about his place in the 170-pound weight class. While many of the division's top fighters are arguing over who should be the next man to challenge current champion Georges St. Pierre, Thiago is content to work his way up the ladder and eliminate any doubts about becoming the next number one contender. How long before the Brazilian supercop gets his shot at the crown?

Josh Barnett's struggle to regain license in California continues

Posted: 23 Feb 2010 01:58 AM PST

Mma_i_barnett01_5761_medium

Josh Barnett's quest to appeal the denial of licensure to fight in the state of California is turning into a prolonged ordeal. On Monday, the appeal was delayed for the fourth time, and is now scheduled for the April 20 California State Athletic Commission meeting.

As Sherdog.com reports, the sticking point this time turned out to be Josh Barnett's absence at the session. The legal counsel for the former UFC heavyweight champion and Pride standout was present and ready to plead his case regarding the testing procedures and chain of custody regarding his positive steroid sample from July 2009; however, the commission ruled it would not proceed without the fighter's being present. Barnett has been out of the country, according to his attorney, Michael J. DiMaggio (apparently, he appeared in Antonio Inoki's IGF event in Tokyo at JCB Hall).

Barnett tested positive for anabolic steroid ahead of the scheduled August 2009 showdown with the consensus heavyweight king, Fedor Emelianenko at "Affliction: Trilogy." The pharmaceutical transgression led to the cancellation of the event and dissolution of the embattled promotion.

DiMaggio expressed his disappointment at the postponement of the appeal, arguing that he and the rest of Barnett's counsel were not aware of any rule or regulation regarding the presence of the client at the appeal. He added that, "even criminal cases go forward without the accused present in some instances."

DiMaggio also stressed that, considering the focus of Barnett's defense on the procedure of the drug test and the handling of the sample after its administration, Barnett himself does not have any additional input.

"Presenting issues and raising issues relating to the test results, the chain of custody, the protocol, those type of issues are issues that can be addressed without Mr. Barnett being present," said DiMaggio. "His presence and his ability to be cross-examined is irrelevant to those issues."

Newly hired CSAC executive George Dodd countered that the letter sent to Barnett regarding the procedure to regain his license in California explicitly stated that he appear in person before the commission.

DiMaggio held his ground and expounded that, if his team were allowed to make its case, Barnett and commission would not have to undergo the redundant inquiry about Barnett's alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs. He also pointed out Barnett's option of renouncing the appeal if it proves to be lengthy and cumbersome.

According to Dodd, however, the matter is far from resolved. Until next time....

Jamie Varner in talks to join WEC 48 PPV against Kamal Shalorus on April 24

Varner-no-cowboys-3_medium

Former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner is in talks to join the star-studded WEC 48 pay-per-view event against Kamal Shalorus on April 24 from the Arco Arena, in Sacramento, Calif., according to MMAWeekly.

Varner was perfect in four fights under the WEC banner, including a hard-fought technical decision over nemesis Donald Cerrone back in January 2009. After recovering from injuries suffered in his fight against "Cowboy," "C-4" imploded under the relentless assault of Ben Henderson to cough up the title at WEC 46 just last month.

His road back to the WEC 155-pound championship begins with Kamal Shalorus.

The "Prince of Persia" is 2-0 for the WEC (6-0-1 overall) and like Varner, appeared at the Versus TV event back on January 10. Shalorus outworked Dave Jansen en route to a unanimous decision victory to earn what is undoubtedly a major step up in competition.

UFC light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar pleads his case for a rematch at the UFC 110 post-fight press conference after an inadvertent headbutt busted him open in the third round of his 205-pound war with Krzysztof Soszynski at the "Nogueira vs. Velasquez" event on Feb. 21 from Sydney. "The American Psycho" was not permitted to continue after spilling blood all over himself, Soszynski and the better part of the Octagon floor. For all you internet savvy Maniacs out there, this screenshot, taken early Sunday morning, may look familiar. It is the be-all and end-all of internet popularity known as Google trends.

Fun little fact -- 70% of all internet sessions start with a search. Considering that information, it is easy to see why this list of hot searches and topics is important in the general scope of Mixed Martial Arts interest across the world.

When UFC 110 ranks above the man behind what is arguably the biggest sports scandal in history, and a relative no name to casual MMA fans like George Sotiropoulos is the eighth most searched topic on Google, well, lets just say that it's pretty darn impressive.

Interesting information. Many people aren't aware of betting exchange, let me explain you about it in simple words. Betting exchanges are emerging as the best sportsbetting sites because they offer better odds than traditional bookmakers and you don't see as much of your betting profit disappearing into the bookie's pockets.
