Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson UFC fight has been discussed

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 08:39 AM CDT

When former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell was forced off the UFC 85 card with a hamstring injury, the organization scrambled to find a main event-worthy bout to take the place of his scheduled showdown with Rashad Evans at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Several possible fights were discussed, including a middleweight tilt between former UFC middleweight champion, Rich Franklin, and former Pride FC dual division belt holder, Dan Henderson.

In fact, according to a Yahoo!Sports.com report, “Ace” had to turn down the opportunity because he “felt after such a hard training camp that he wouldn't be able to peak again so soon.” Franklin just dispatched of Travis Lutter via second round technical knockout at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ on April 19.

The interesting thing here is that even though the fight won’t take place on June 7, it is expected to go down later on this year.

That’s a fantastic match up — Franklin is proving that he is perhaps the second best 185-pound fighter in the world, defeating all comers since 2003 with the exception of Anderson Silva (lost twice).

On the other hand, Hendo needs to re-establish himself as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters on the planet. He’s lost two straight albeit to talented champions Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Silva.

And it wouldn’t get any easier with Franklin, but it would create some fireworks in a division that sorely needs them. It’s a nice clash of styles between two of the best in the sport.

This is going to be a hard one to predict if and when it goes off. Can’t wait.

Sidenote: Matt Hughes stepped up to take on Thiago Alves in the UFC 85 main event, as well as Michael Bisping and Chris Leben … not to mention James Irvin (he’ll take on Evans).

Wilson Reis vs. Justin Robbins slated for Elite XC Saturday Night Fights on CBS

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 08:14 AM CDT

Wilson Reis vs Justin Robbins

Another undercard scrap for EliteXC’s Saturday Night Fights at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on on May 31 was recently announced, according to FiveOuncesOfPain.com — undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Wilson Reis (3-0) and Justin Robbins (8-3-1) will meet in a 140-pound showdown.

Reis just fought on the ShoXC Challenger Series card in Atlantic City, N.J., on January 25, beating Zach Makovsky with a second round choke. He is a decorated jiu jitsu specialist with a championship in 2004 at the prestigious Mundials tournament in the brown belt division.

In addition, Reis is well known in the competitive grappling world and has made a successful transition to mixed martial arts since his professional debut — a unanimous decision win over Baba Shegeyasu last July at Extreme Challenge 81.

Robbins is more of a wrestler, but also likes to use submissions to finish his fights. In fact, he has three career victories by way of a submission.

This will be the first fight for Robbins under the EliteXC banner. His last showing was an impressive first round win at Warrior Concepts: “Valhalla Rising,” during which he slapped an arm triangle on Jeff Hodges 47 seconds into the fight.

This one should come down to who executes their gameplan more effectively. Reis will obvioulsy be looking to showcase his jiu jitsu skills and Robbins will probably use his takedown defense to try and keep the fight standing.

EliteXC Saturday Night Fights undercard bouts will all be streamed live on ProElite.com for free prior to the 10 p.m. start time on CBS come May 31.

Joe Doerksen released from the UFC

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 07:19 AM CDT

Middleweight Joe Doerksen (39-12) joins the not-so-distinguished list of recent fighters to be released from their UFC contracts over the past few months according to a report from Ontario’s Sportsnet.ca.

The recent trend seems to be focused on the 185 lb. class as Doerksen joins fellow middleweights David Terrell, Kalib Starnes and Travis Lutter on the temporary unemployment line.

The common denominator (besides being released) is that each fighter has a wealth of both talent and presence. Unfortunately, they’ve been either stricken with injury or unable to put together winning records inside the Octagon.

From Doerksen:

“(The UFC officials) made it very clear they’re very happy with the way I fight and they want me to come back, But they need me to go put a couple of wins together (first). It’s always a possibility whenever you lose. I’ve come and gone several times over my career and I’m sure I’ll be back again. It’s not really devastating news. It’s just the cycle I have to go through.”

Doerksen is 1-4 in the UFC, including a knockout loss against Ed Herman at UFC 78 and a TKO at the hands of Jason MacDonald at UFC 83. Doerksen, however, has been fighting since 1999 and with more than 50 professional fights he’s not going to be out of work for very long.

UFC Quick Quote: Jones Jr. before St. Pierre for “The Spider”

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 07:18 AM CDT

Props: Tatame.com

“St. Pierre is a great fighter, but I would never put on weights to face the champion of [another] category. My weight is 98kg and I lose weight to fight at 83kg and I would never make that. But people talks what they want and if this fight really happen, I hope to make a good performance. By now I am in fattening stage (laughter). I don't have a bout scheduled and we are trying to make this fight against Roy Jones Jr. This is a personal wish"

UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva responds to comments made by UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre in an interview last week about the prospect of a Spider/Rush superfight.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou calling in the big guns for UFC 84

Posted: 30 Apr 2008 07:18 AM CDT

Looks like Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (4-2) is not taking his loss to Lyoto Machida at UFC 79 very lightly. Sokoudjou, who was signed to the UFC after bursting onto the PRIDE scene with KO wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona, lost his Octagon debut to the undefeated Machida via arm-triangle choke in the second round.

The African Assassin is set to erase the memory of that loss when he faces fellow Judo master Kazuhiro Nakamura (11-7) at UFC 84: Ill Will on May 24. To help him do that, he’s enlisted some of Judo’s biggest names.

From Sokoudjou:

“Well right now its pretty much train, eat, sleep, and train more! Its been a very busy week. This week along with my regular training partners Ive been working with Hector Lombard and Pawel Nastula. Next week I will have some more new training partners to work with.”

For more pics of Sokoudjou’s training, head over to AfricanAssassin.com.

Burned out …

… been attacking this site for about the last 18 months straight without a break that lasts longer than eight hours. Even on major holidays I’m chained to this thing.

It takes a toll.

For the next day or so the very well equipped senior writer of the site, Jesse Holland, is going to steer this ship. He’s more than qualified to handle the responsibilities.

I’ll still be floating around in moderation hell and stamping out other fires, and I may even stop in for a post or two. So it’s not really a “break.”

Fortunately, our dedicated team will also pitch in (hopefully), which is nice — our guys truly love what we do here and are diehard fans who know what’s up.

It’s refreshing — we collectively don’t attempt to be something we’re not. This is a blog first that just so happens to break a ton of good industry news first.

Therefore, treat our writers and readers well in the next 48 hours or so. And don’t miss me too much … my wife and kids send their kind thanks in advance

Grand Theft Auto IV: Bas Rutten is hilarious

Posted: 29 Apr 2008 11:27 PM CDT

Grand Theft Auto IV Bas Rutten
This is a random special report from MMAmania.com reader Jonathan Zungre.

Like the hilarious car radio in other Grand Theft Auto (GTA) video games, the television in the main character's apartment comes complete with multiple channels of in-game programming.

And in the world of GTA — where everything is satirical — former UFC champion and MMA legend Bas Rutten hosts a show called "The Men's Room," which from what I can tell, is a crazy parody of Dr. Phil and The Man Show.

In fact, the show features Bas and his co-host — a little effeminate man, giving insights on issues like health and anger. Bas always seems to resort to violence in all of his examples such as bashing a coworker's head into a telephone pole to get respect, and when the co-host tries to interject Bas cuts him off within a few words.

Perhaps he doesn’t know much about Bas’ and his ability to bar fight (among other things).

And since Bas has the on camera energy of 10 men, he's constantly getting up off the couch throwing punches or demonstrating a kick to the groin, which is a thing "of pain and beauty." I really wonder if they gave him a script or just let him improvise, but whatever happened, it really works.

Here's some quotes from the show (I'm kind of paraphrasing):

Bas: "On today's show, we're going to be talking about different aspects of health, especially how to endanger the health of others."

Bas: Anger causes many things, baldness, impotence, "waking up in the middle of the night with blood all over your hands and you don't know what happened. Hey, I've been around."

Cohost: "You are so pent up!"

Bas: (clapping his hands) "I know!"

Cohost: "You should try some aroma therapy."

Bas: "The only aroma I like is the smell of burning flesh."

And watch this shaky armed kid's video right here.

You are the boss or you are the bitch. Thanks, Bas. Thanks indeed.

Elite XC DVDs on sale soon

Elite XC DVD
ProElite — the parent company of the Elite XC mixed martial arts promotion and several others — has signed a multi year production and distribution deal with Image Entertainment to release DVDs to the public, according to VideoBusiness.com.

The deal will include four annual Elite XC DVDs, as well as eight annual installments within the ShoXC brand.

Here’s a snip from Steven DeMille, Image senior vice president of marketing:

"There is a growing market for high-quality arena-based mixed martial arts content, and ProElite is the premiere source for this type of sports entertainment. We are pleased to add ProElite to our roster of content suppliers as we continue to grow both our distribution channels and scope of programming."

The first two DVDs entitled “Destiny” and “Renegade” will feature fights that include Frank Shamrock, Renzo Gracie and Kimbo Slice. These are scheduled to hit the shelves as soon as May 13.

A third DVD called “Huntington Beach Badass” will feature Tank Abbott and go on sale July 22.

ProElite Home Entertainment Vice President, Turi Altavilla, added this:

"With MMA going primetime, we are introducing the sport to a whole new audience that will likely drive demand for MMA events on DVD. Watching these DVDs will be like having front row seats at MMA events."

If nothing else besides pure entertainment, these DVDs will provide viewers — and new fans who come on board with the upcoming network television debut on CBS — the opportunity to catch up on the recent history of their favorite stars as well as build hype for future fights.

Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller vs. Katsuyori Shibata DREAM 3 fight scheduled

Posted: 29 Apr 2008 02:05 PM CDT

jason mayhem miller
Attention monkeys: Jason “Mayhem” Miller (20-5) will return to action against Katsuyori Shibata (2-3) during the DREAM 3 event that takes place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on May 11, according to MMAnews.com.

Miller was last seen in action at HDNet Fights: “Reckless Abandon” on December 15 of last year where he defeated Tim Kennedy via unanimous decision. He sustained a leg injury because of that fight and has been recovering from it ever since.

And he’s apparently itching to get back to competition.

Here’s a snip from Mayhem’s MySpace.com blog:

“Its time to fight yo. Its on and crackin. I feel like a savage right now. An axe swinging savage. That’s right, I said it. I will be adorning myself with warpaint shortly and scalping the whiteman if he comes near my village with his smallpox infested ass.”

Miller has kept a high profile (no surprise) during his layoff, working for ProElite recently to conduct fighter interviews and other shenanigans at Elite XC events. However, he did so with a noticable limp, which I witnessed firsthand at the Elite XC: “Street Certified” show in Miami, Fla., in February.

Mayhem has won 13 of his last 15 fights. The two losses were a technical knockout courtesy of Frank Trigg in December of 2006 and a unanimous decision to current UFC Welterweight Champion George St. Pierre in April 2005.

That’s nothing of which to be ashamed.

His opponent next month, however, has not shared that same success. Shibata has lost his last three fights, including one to MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba via a first round armbar. His only two wins are to a winless guy named Ice Man (thats his actual name) in 2004 and to Yoshihisa Yamamoto (13-23) last March.

Not exactly a world class resume.

On paper, this is a fight Mayhem should win as long as his injured leg has had enough time to heal up. He’s always been a fan favorite with his charasmatic style in and out of the cage. This will be a nice opportunity for him to win over some more “Mayhem Monkeys” in Japan.

DREAM 3 will also feature the semifinal match ups of the 2008 Lightweight Grand Prix, as well as other scheduled matches.

MMA Quick Quote: Jake Shields has a fight plan for Georges St. Pierre

Posted: 29 Apr 2008 09:07 AM CDT

jake shields

“St. Pierre looks awesome. He’s one of the fights that I’d really love to have right now. I need to make sure I look really good against my opponents; I want go out and dominate people so I can build some momentum for that fight…. He doesn’t have a lot of weaknesses. He’s going to be a tough guy to beat, because it’s not like you can pick out one thing. To beat a guy like St. Pierre you have to be in phenomenal shape and keep the pressure on him. You’ve got to stay in his face, and if he takes you down, you better be ready to get back up and not just stay in guard and get manhandled like he’s doing to people.”

– Jake Shields — Elite XC welterweight and among the top 170-pound fighters in the world — tells MMAWeekly.com about how he would approach a fight with UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre. Shields is set to battle Drew Fickett for the vacant Elite XC welterweight strap some time soon. In fact, the bout was scratched last month when Shields sustained a back injury during training, rescheduled for June 14 and now pushed back again, it appears, to July 26 — the second show for the promotion on CBS “Saturday Night Fights.”

Rich Clementi ‘No Love’ climbs UFC lightweight ladder

Posted: 28 Apr 2008 08:05 PM CDT

rich clementi
Rich "No Love" Clementi played spoiler for many Canadian fans at UFC 83: "St. Pierre vs. Serra 2" with his tough split decision victory over Sam "Hands of Stone" Stout. The shower of boos from some 21 000 fans didn't phase Clementi, in fact it did the opposite.

Here's a snip:

"Being booed pumped me up a little bit … whether it's cheers or boos it's the energy that matters, I used that a little to my favor."

The Canadian fans lived up to their stereotype of being overtly polite, however, only after the fight was over:

"The crowd in Montreal and the fans are just awesome … even afterwards I had fans come up to me and say 'I felt bad booing you' and they apologized and asked for my autograph."

Shortly after his win, Clementi received a call to fill in for an injured Rob Emerson who was slated to face Terry Etim at UFC 84: "Ill Will" on May 24. Without a thought Clementi jumped at the opportunity. After a tough three-round war with Stout, Clementi is going to have a brief break.

In fact, he said he would, "… take a few days to relax my mind and to get refocused and then I'm right back at it."

And his thoughts on the 10-1 British fighter, Terry Etim:

"He's another young kid, and the thing about him is he's not really great in one area and I seem to do well against guys like that."

I know I should be staying away from the Starnes debacle, but it is always interesting to hear what fellow fighters, and especially ones who were on the card, thought of the whole situation.

Clementi's reaction:

"You never really know what is going through a guys mind when he's fighting, but at the same token, when you're paid to perform – and that's what we are, performers – go get knocked out…step in there, stick your jaw out, try to throw a punch …."

Clementi is a dangerous fighter who is solid in all aspects of the game. It is hard not to be in his corner for every one of his fights. His dedication to the sport and his short turnaround between his fights speaks to his character.

Of course, I was booing him in favor of the hometown Stout, but I was one of the overtly polite Canadians patting him on the back after his win.

Fighting in the deepest, arguably the toughest division in all of MMA — let alone the UFC — lends itself to a complicated mix of up-and-comers, journeymen and contenders.

Where does Clementi see himself in the mix?

Here's a final snip:

"Do I think I'm ready for that, a title shot or whatever? – No. Do I feel like I'm slowly climbing that ladder and kicking people off it as I'm trying to come up? – Damn right I am."

Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center (Pic)

Posted: 28 Apr 2008 02:47 PM CDT

Josh Koscheck Jon Fitch

Top UFC welterweight contenders, Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck, took time away from training and their busy schedules to visit with wounded war veterans at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, last week.

Both fighters — American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) stablemates — are sponsored by Oak Grove Technologies, which set up the visit, meet-and-greet and autograph session.

“Jon and Josh signed t-shirts for the soldiers, chatted with them, joked around, posed for pictures and then after the job fair we all went to visit soldiers at the Malone House,” said Mariah Haworth, Marketing Coordinator at Oak Grove Technologies. “It was really nice to see all the smiles.”

We’ll have more on this outreach as soon as possible … it’s truly great stuff.

For now it’s back to training — Koscheck has a tough fight coming up against Chris Lytle at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” on July 5 and Fitch more than likely has a looming showdown with reigning UFC Welterweight Champion, Georges St. Pierre, later this year.

To learn more about Oak Grove Technologies feel free to visit its Web site right here.

Jason Day: UFC 83 post-fight interview with ‘Dooms’

Posted: 28 Apr 2008 01:36 PM CDT

Jason “Dooms” Day came through with a big win in his UFC debut at UFC 83: “St. Pierre vs. Serra 2,” dominating Alan “The Talent” Belcher to score a standing technical knockout victory in the first round back on April 19.

He landed his four-fight contract with the UFC after his controversial split decision win over UFC veteran David “The Crow” Loiseau at a Hardcore Championship Fighting card back in February. Many felt that Loiseau won the fight and subsequently he (Loiseau) should have had the fight with Belcher instead of Jason. Day said he scored two victories that night.

Here's a snip:

"One of the sweetest victories I've had was letting everyone know that I do belong there … a lot of people said I didn't belong and that David won that fight … but coming out and dominating Alan Belcher in every aspect, I don't think anybody has any questions, it wasn't left to the judges…it was like getting two victories in one."

For those who missed this fight because it was not aired Day looked calm, collected and very dominant in his debut. Belcher took him down early and Day worked effective elbows from the rubber guard. In fact, the “Master of the Rubber Guard,” Eddie Bravo, was so impressed that Jason had learned the technique just one month out from his fight and put it to use so effectively that he sought him out after the fight.

Here’s a snip:

"He came up to me in the hotel, and of course I know who Eddie Bravo is, but I hadn't seen a picture, and he was like 'that was a sick use of the rubber guard dude' and I said thanks, I thought it was just a fan, and then he told me he was going to send me his DVDs and I was like 'oh shit that's Eddie Bravo' … that was one of the highlights of my trip out there was Eddie Bravo telling me I used his rubber guard to perfection."

When asked about his thoughts on the Kalib Starnes vs. Nate Quarry fiasco, he had this to say:

"I was warming up with him all week and he looked like he had a good head on his shoulders … he looked ready to go … I didn't know what he was thinking, if Nate Quarry was running at me doing what he was doing to Kalib, I would be punching him in the face looking for the knockout."

Jason Day is ready for whatever the UFC throws at him. For now he is satisfied with building houses for his parent's company up in Lethbridge, Alberta. And though he did take Monday off, his father was calling him wondering when he was coming back to work.

Carlos Condit fight contract with WEC extended

Posted: 28 Apr 2008 10:47 AM CDT

carlos conditWEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit (22-4) signed a four-fight contract extension with the Zuffa-owned promotion, according to USAToday.com.

“The Natural Born Killer” — who was a spectator at last Saturday’s UWC show in Washington, DC — made the announcement during the event. It must be noted that prior to the extension that Condit had one more fight left on his current deal.

It’s clear that locking Condit to a long-term deal means that the WEC sees him as one of its premier stars in the organization along with fellow champions Urijah Faber and Brian Stann.

Condit, in fact, is undefeated in the WEC and is riding a four-fight win streak. His last defeated Carlo Prater via submission in the first round at WEC 32 last February.

He’s quietly one of most underrated welterweights in the world and is awaiting his next opponent.

Nick Serra vs. Matt Makowski Elite XC fight added to Saturday Night Fights under card

Posted: 28 Apr 2008 08:48 AM CDT

Nick “The Mad Monkey” Serra (4-2) — brother of former UFC welterweight champion and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 4 winner Matt Serra –  will reportedly fight up-and-comer Matt Makowski (2-0) on the undercard of EliteXC’s Saturday Night Fights at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J, on May 31, according to FiveOuncesOfPain.com.

Serra is a New York native; therefore, fighting in the Garden State makes sense for him. He obviously trains with his brother at Serra Jiu Jitsu in Long Island and is a solid submission specialist himself. All four of his career wins, in fact, have been via tap out and he’s never been submitted or knocked out.

This will be his first fight since June 23 of last year — a second round submission (armbar) victory over Mike Varner at Cage Fury Fighting Championships 5: “2 Worlds, One Cage.”

Makowski is a 22-year-old fighter out of Philly who has been impressive in his two victories in his short MMA career. He most recently overcame Muay Thai specialist Joe Schilling with a first round rear naked choke at the ShoXC Callenger Series in Atlantic City, N.J. on January 25.

The welterweight showdown is the first undercard bout to be announced or rumored for the prestigious mixed martial arts network television debut on CBS. We know the Serra’s can fight or at least roll, so this should be a good scrap for the fans.

Remember that EliteXC under card bouts are and will be streamed LIVE on ProElite.com prior to the 10 p.m. telecast on CBS.

UFC 83 payouts and salaries for ‘Serra vs. St. Pierre 2′

Posted: 28 Apr 2008 08:08 AM CDT

We’re not going to get them, according to the Quebec Boxing Council.

The official sanctioning body for the region has declared them confidential, which is not uncommon for major pay-per-view (PPV) events that take place outside of the United States.

In fact, Texas, New Jersey and Colorado, among other states often don’t reveal fighter salaries like Nevada, California, Ohio and Florida.

However, remember that UFC President Dana White revealed in the post-fight press conference that Demian Maia (Submission of the Night), Jason MacDonald (Knockout of the Night), as well as Jonathan Goulet and Kuniyoshi Hironaka (Fight of the Night), all earned $75,000 bonuses each for their efforts.

And not one of those fights was aired during the PPV telecast. Ho Hum.

Travis Lutter released from the UFC

Posted: 27 Apr 2008 02:10 PM CDT

Apparently the UFC has seen enough of Travis Lutter. Pramit Mohapatra of FightTicker.com has confirmed with “The Serial Killer” that he’s been released from his UFC contract effective immediately.

Lutter (9-5) seemed on the verge of a career resurgence after a successful stint on The Ultimate Fighter 4 where he defeated Patrick Cote to earn a title shot against middleweight deity Anderson Silva.

Lutter however squandered the opportunity (despite a good showing against Silva) by failing to make weight for the biggest fight of his career. That particular shortcoming cost him the respect of many fans and even UFC President Dana White.

Still, Lutter was able to continue fighting but had to pull out of his UFC 74 fight with Ryan Jensen after re-aggravating an old neck injury. During his hiatus former middleweight champion Rich Franklin was victorious over Jason MacDonald and Yushin Okami before being dismantled by Anderson Silva for a second time.

That left “Ace” with little options in his weight class - and a perfect opportunity for Travis Lutter to erase some bad memories. Once again Lutter held a dominant position in the first round, but his lack of conditioning left him a sitting duck for the calculated assault of Franklin in round two.

Two opportunities against two of the UFC’s top middleweights. Two opportunities squandered from what seemingly could have been prevented by Lutter himself.

It’s no secret that the UFC has been increasingly frugal with the employee payroll, but one has to wonder how much Lutter contributed to his own demise.

James Irvin: Rashad Evans taking a ’step down’ at UFC 85

Quoteworthy:

"I'm just so happy that he would even take the fight against me. I consider him an 'A' level fighter, and I consider myself a 'C' level fighter, maybe a 'B' level because I just beat Houston trying to claw my way up to the top. So for him to take a step down and fight me, I'm greatly appreciative of the guy, who is someone I look up to as one of those top tier fighters.”

James Irvin comments on his upcoming fight with Rashad Evans at UFC 85 in London, England on June 7, which was all made possible because of an injury to former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell. “The Sandman” sounds surprised (and excited) that Evans accepted the bout because, as he puts it, the two are on different levels right now.

Bobby Southworth vs. Anthony Ruiz Strikeforce fight on June 27 possible

Posted: 26 Apr 2008 11:14 AM CDT

strikeforce bobby southworth vs anthony ruiz
Remember Bobby Southworth … the guy who called Chris Leben a “fatherless bastard” on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 1?

Well, it turns out he’s still alive. Not only is he still breathing, but he’s the current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion. And he’ll likely put that title on the line against Anthony “El Toro” Ruiz at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on June 27.

This is an interesting fight because the two just faced off five months ago at Strikeforce: “Four Men Enter, One Man Survives” in a non title bout. It ended with Ruiz’s hand being raised; however, the fight was called by a ringside doctor because of a cut Soutworth sustained over his left eye in the second round.

The 38-year-old Southworth (8-5) won the Strikeforce 205-pound title back in 2006, outscoring Vernon “Tiger” White on the judges scorecards. Since winning the strap he has defended it once successfully against Bill Mahood last September. Less than 2 months later he lost to Ruiz and now is looking to prove he would have won that battle had it not been for the cut.

“El Toro” (20-10) is on a six-fight win streak, including two wins against Jimmy Ambriz (11-9-1) and TUF 3 alum Brad “The Hillbilly Heartthrob” Imes (10-4) since his win over Southworth. He’s a knockout artist with 12 of his wins coming by way of (T)KO.

Ruiz does not have good submission defense. He’s been forced to tapout eight times in his professional career — a weakness Southworth could attempt to exploit come June 27. For what it’s worth Southworth isn’t anything special on the ground, either, and is basically a stand up fighter himself.

But, he does have 4 submission victories to his credit. And he might be reluctant to stand with the hard hitting Ruiz for too long. Or I could be wrong and Southworth might just throw caution to the wind and bang it out with Ruiz until one of them falls or gets cut … like last time.

We’ll find out on fight night.

Strikeforce Lighweight Champion Gilbert Melendez is also scheduled to put his 155-pound title on the line that same evening against Josh “The Punk” Thomson.

Should be a great show, which will air on the Showtime premium cable channel at 10 p.m. ET.

HDNet to air DREAM events

Posted: 26 Apr 2008 09:28 AM CDT

It was announced last night on “Inside MMA” that HDNet will soon air DREAM mixed martial arts events on its television network.

This news comes on the heels of word that Tokyo Broadcasting System in Japan yanked the DREAM primetime television deal because of lackluster ratings for the first-ever show last month.

No primtetime television exposure was the death knell for Pride FC overseas and it is possible that DREAM could endure the same fate in time. Hopefully, the recent deal with HDNet can keep DREAM afloat long enough to right the ship.

Here’s a snip on the HDNet partnership with DREAM:

“As part of this exclusive broadcast agreement, HDNet will air DREAM 1 and DREAM 2 on May 2 and May 3 respectively, truly making the first weekend in May a ‘DREAM Weekend’ for MMA fans. Both broadcasts will begin at 10:30 ET. HDNet and HDNet Fights will also bring the next four DREAM events - DREAM 3 on May 11, DREAM 4 on June 15, DREAM 5 on July 21 and DREAM 6 on September 23 - to American and Canadian audiences.”

Check out the commercial after the jump … it’s nicely done.
