Friday Night Throwdown: EliteXC/WEC 34- What to watch for

Posted: 31 May 2008 03:23 AM CDT

Chris Cosme here and we’re hot on the heels of an exciting UFC 84: “Ill Will” card last Saturday - but it’s time to get ready for a stacked weekend of even more mixed martial arts action on national television!

Promotions looking to put their respective stamps on the sport — WEC and EliteXC – will bring us two exciting cards that should give us plenty to talk about at the water cooler on Monday morning. And we’re going to give you five things to watch for heading into this historic weekend for both promotions in this edition of Friday Night Throwdown.

Can Kimbo Slice live up to the hype?

The controversial Kimbo Slice headlines the first-ever MMA network television broadcast this Saturday night on CBS. Critics say Kimbo doesn’t deserve that spot, while others argue he can be a top draw in the sport if he’s victorious. This all hinges on how he does inside the cage at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Saturday night against James Thompson. Some fans say that this fight is a shoe-in: Thompson is known to have a glass jaw - but let’s remember that this is MMA and anything can and often does happen.

Just ask Georges St. Pierre.

I personally have no problem at all with Slice headlining the card. He takes the sport very seriously, dedicates himself to training and takes everything in stride. And with guys like Bas Rutten and Shawn Tompkins training and watching over him, there’s no reason to believe that Slice can’t be successful and become a huge star. With the way Kimbo has gone about business throughout the months leading up to tomorrow, I think he’ll deliver and silence a few critics along the way.

Kaitlyn Young is no joke, Gina

I don’t care who you are, but three weeks to prepare for a hungry fighter like Young can spell doom for “Crush.” For those who don’t know Kaitlyn Young, go watch some YouTube videos on her.

The girl competed three times during a recent Hook ‘N Shoot tournament in one night - and won all of them in less than one round each! She won the tournament in style, ending each bout via (T)KO. She is no Tara LaRosa - arguably the best fighter in women’s MMA - but she is a stiff test for Carano.

Perhaps I’m overhyping Young a bit, but the fact remains that Carano has to eventually make the dedication to be a fighter first and a star later. One thing Carano has going for her is that she has the master strategist, Randy Couture in her corner. He and the others from XTreme Couture will more than likely have a great gameplan drawn up to defeat Young.

If Carano pulls this off, you have to imagine that LaRosa will be there waiting for Carano down the road.

Maybe.

Is Jens Pulver really done?

I asked my friend and colleague, Jesse Holland, who will win this fight and he emphasized that not only will Pulver lose, but that he’s done.

Period.

I’m not so sure about that because I think Lil’ Evil has a chance in this fight. The one thing that Pulver will have to exploit is his edge in the standup. Urijah Faber is a five-tool fighter, but if there is any weakness in his superb all around game it would be his striking.

Pulver is the better striker in this fight and it would be wise for Pulver to try and bang with Faber. Faber hasn’t shown that he has knockout power in his hands but Pulver does.

On the flip side, a major concern for Pulver on Sunday night is that Faber is the far superior athlete and will more than likely dictate where the fight takes place. Pulver will have to turn back the hands of time to dethrone the freight train known as Urijah Faber. You have to remember that NO ONE gave Pulver a shot when he went against the younger, stronger and faster man in BJ Penn back in 2002.

Pulver shocked the world when he defeated “The Prodigy” via split decision. He’s got a chance to repeat history on Sunday night at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif.

Miguel Torres will demonstrate (again) the reason he’s a top 10 pound-for-pound fighter

Urijah Faber and Kid Yamamoto are often referred to in discussions as one and two when it comes to being the best fighter in the world competing in smaller weight classes (145 and below). However, that spot actually belongs to WEC Bantamweight Champion, Miguel Angel Torres.

His frame and style reminds me of the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world right now, Anderson Silva. Torres is just 50 pounds lighter. He gives opponents fits because of his size and length advantages, plus he uses them to his maximum potential.

Torres humbled Chase Beebe to win the bantamweight title, frustrating the experienced wrestler with his variety of strikes and takedown defense. And when Beebe took Torres down, Torres stayed active and overwhelmed Beebe once the pair scrambled for the dominant position. With all due respect to Yoshiro Maeda, Torres is just too well rounded and is in the zone right now.

Put simply, Torres can pick dudes apart if they decide to strike and he can even dominate you when it hits the ground. Pick your poison.

If you had to choose only one event to watch this weekend, it should be WEC 34

The more significant event has to be WEC 34 this weekend over EliteXC. There will be plenty of opponents that will be fed to Slice to show he’s legit. But nothing tops arguably the biggest featherweight fight in MMA history. Let’s be real here, let’s say that both events were on PPV…which one would you pay for? Would you pay say $54.95 to watch Kimbo Slice KO guys with the chins of porcelain or two fighters at a crossroads for a promotion on the rise?

If you’re looking for pure entertainment value, then EXC would be your destination on Saturday. I mean Busta Rhymes is scheduled to perform and you will hear plenty of Mauro Renallo metaphors that I wouldn’t want to hear even if I had a ten foot pole. If you’re looking for fast- paced and memorable fights, then the WEC will be the show to watch on Sunday so that you can get wasted on Saturday. You have two title fights in Maeda-Torres and Faber-Pulver at WEC 34. You have an internet sensation turned MMA fighter in the main event and an American Gladiator trying to show that she’s more than a pretty face at EliteXC on CBS.

It’s more than likely that the MMA diehards will choose the WEC 34. The newer fans to the sport will look at EliteXC as the next big thing. Either way, we get the best of both worlds because both events will be FREE of charge!

UFC 84 Wrap Up

BJ Penn is the best lightweight fighter in the world…ever

The way he decimated Sean Sherk last Saturday night, it cements his place as the best ever at 155. I mean what is it that Penn can’t do to anyone at 155 right now? I feel sorry for the winner of Florian-Huerta because neither man stands a chance with Penn in the octagon right now. I know it, you know it and BJ Penn sure as hell knows it. There’s a reason he wants a rematch with GSP.

What will the UFC do with Machida?:

With a win over Tito Ortiz, Lyoto Machida is clearly the next man in line for a shot at the light heavyweight title. My issue with Machida is that his resume isn’t clear cut as other fighters. Machida has won five times in the UFC, but only two of those wins were significant. His wins over Ortiz and Sokodjou sure makes a case, but it’s his style of fighting is what hurts him. I have no problem with his style because it’s so unique.

The problem is that his style will not draw in fans to pay and watch him fight. At the end of the day, the way you fight is what sells. When Chuck was on the top of the world, it was because he was knocking out folks left and right. If Machida becomes the champion in the UFC’s most prestigious division, it will cause trouble for the UFC. People aren’t going to shell out loads of cash to watch Machida confuse his opponents for five rounds and not finish the fights.

If you want to solve this puzzle, let Machida fight a guy like Thiago Silva. If he gets by him, then by all means he’s the next man to get a shot at the gold. As for Tito…so long and have a great career in EliteXC. You almost pulled it off with that triangle man!

He’s not ‘back’-the Axe Murderer never left:

The baddest man to ever walk to the octagon to techno music showed that he still has that killer instinct. Silva reassured his loyal fans that the Wanderlei Silva of old never left but has been away for awhile. It doesn’t matter who you are, you’d be lucky to go 3 for 3 in fights against Dan Henderson, Cro Cop and Chuck Liddell, and that was the case for Silva. And all it took was thirty-six seconds to show that Silva is refocused and is ready to do damage in the light heavyweight division.

Now do I still feel that he should move down to 185? Yes, but if he performs like he did against Jardine in his next bout…I’d have to reconsider. As for Jardine, I told everyone that if he couldn’t handle the adversity that a guy like Silva brings to the table that it would be a long night. Well he couldn’t and it ended up being a very SHORT night for the ‘Dean of Mean’. His chin is right up there with the James Thompson’s and Houston Alexander’s of the world now.

Shucks, and to think a win over Silva guaranteed him a title shot. Good luck trying to get back to that elite level now Keith.

MMA news and notes

Jamie Varner vs. Marcus Hicks for WEC lightweight title on August 3rd: Boy I’m already loving the rumored WEC 35 card already and it’s only getting sweeter. Varner-Hicks will be a barnburner and it’s not going to last five rounds. Varner is looking to defend the title for the first time against the hottest fighter in his weight class in Hicks. I mean Hicks is a beast but Varner is no slouch either. This fight along with the Brian Stann-Steve Cantwell title fight will make WEC 35 one hell of a fight card.

Mirko Cro Cop vs. Ralek Gracie in a grappling match at DREAM. 4: Are you kidding me? Is this how you rebound after getting destroyed and dominated by two heavyweights you were supposed to destroy? I don’t give a damn if this is a grappling match and a fight that only can end with a submission or draw, this is just ridiculous Mirko! I don’t call a grappling match with a Gracie as a way to boost your confidence and return to the UFC…if it ever happens. What a joke, Cro Cop is a shell of his former self people.

His potential was maximized when he won the 2006 PRIDE Open Weight Grand Prix, and since then…2-2 in his last four fights. Nuff said.

Quick Picks for WEC 34 and EliteXC

  • Kimbo Slice
  • Robbie Lawler
  • Gina Carano
  • Joey Villasenor
  • Jon Murphy
  • Miguel Torres
  • Mark Munoz
  • Rob McCullough

Urijah Faber

All in all this will be one memorable weekend for every MMA fan out there. I know I’ll be watching both shows because you can’t beat two quality cards for free right? I did just shell almost sixty bucks to watch UFC 84 in HD, but I won’t be doing it for UFC 85. I know we were supposed to do the mailbag edition of the FNT tonight, but I just couldn’t help myself from talking about this weekend. Maybe another time but until then, I’ll see you guys right back here in the Throwdown!

EliteXC weigh-in results for Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson CBS event; Gina Carano fails to make weight (UPDATE)

The official weigh-ins for the Elite XC primetime special “Saturday Night Fights” from just OUTSIDE the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., are now in.

And it didn’t go all too smooth.

In particular, the “female face” of mixed martial arts, Gina Carano, failed to make weight on her first attempt.

Normally, she would have one hour to lose 3.5 pounds (she weighed in at 144.5); however, MMAmania.com learned from Nick Lembo, the New Jersey Athletic Control Board (NJACB) Deputy Attorney, that the regulatory body didn’t want her to cut anymore weight.

Therefore, prior to the official weigh-ins, a deal was struck between the Carano and Young camps that the fight would go on and “Conviction” would surrender a 12.5 percent purse penalty.

Here are the official scale-tipping results:

265 lbs.: Kimbo Slice (235.5) vs. James "The Colossus" Thompson (257)
185 lbs.: “Ruthless" Robbie Lawler (184.5) vs. Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith (184.5)
185 lbs: Joey Villasenor (184.5) vs. Phil "The New York Badass" Baroni (185)
140 lbs: Gina "Conviction" Carano (144.5) vs. Kaitlin Young (140.5)
265 lbs.: Brett "The Grim” Rogers (263.5) vs. Jon Murphy (260.5)
265 lbs.: Carlos Moreno (261) vs. Carlton Haselrig (263)
160 lbs.: Chris Liguori (161) vs. Jim Bova (160.5)
170 lbs.: Nick Serra (167) vs. Matt Makowski (171)
140 lbs.: Wilson Reis (140.5) vs. Justin Robbins (140.5)
155 lbs.: James "Binky" Jones (154.5) vs. Calvin Kattar (155.5)
135 lbs.: Zach Makovsky (135) vs. Andre Soares (134)
155 lbs.: Mike Groves (154) vs. Joe Sampieri (155)

*Note: Fighters are allowed to weigh one pound more than the division limit in non-title fights.

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the main card action, beginning at 9 p.m. ET with the CBS broadcast on fight night. In addition, we will post the latest quick results of the prelim action at around 7 p.m. ET.

The MMAmania.com crew will be on the scene all weekend, which means that you can expect some great coverage of the first-ever mixed martial arts bout to air on network television.

Definitely check in before, during and after the the “Primetime” event for all the coverage and discussion you can handle.

UFC 85 results and live fight coverage for ‘Bedlam’ PPV event

ufc 85 results

UFC 85: “Bedlam” is scheduled to air LIVE from the O2 Arena in London, England, on pay-per-view (PPV) at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, June 7. It will re-air at 10 p.m. ET on PPV later that same evening for all those who don’t care for some mid-afternoon mixed martial arts action.

MMAmania.com will provide LIVE blow-by-blow, round-by-round coverage of the main card
action at 3 p.m. ET, as well as the latest quick results of the prelim bouts at around 1 p.m. ET next weekend.

Therefore, if you don’t want to see know the results or view any spoilers THEN DON’T VISIT THIS SITE until you are ready to discuss the action. Consider that fair warning.

Having said that, many of our readers check-in before, during and after the PPV telecast to share their thoughts on the action. Therefore, feel free to leave a comment or 10 before you leave and chat with many of our readers during the show — it always turns out to be a great discussion.

Here’s the most recent official UFC 85 card:

Main Event:

Matt Hughes (42-6) vs. Thiago Alves (14-3)

Main card (televised):

185 lbs.: Michael Bisping (15-1) vs. Jason Day (17-5)
170 lbs.: Mike Swick (11-2) vs. Marcus Davis (14-3)
185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (26-7) vs. Thales Leites (12-1)
265 lbs.: Brandon Vera (8-1) vs. Fabricio Werdum (10-3-1)

Under card (May not be broadcast):

185 lbs.: Martin Kampmann (15-2) vs. Jorge Rivera (15-6)
155 lbs.: Thiago Tavares (13-1) vs. Matt Wiman (9-3)
170 lbs.: Roan Carneiro (12-6) vs. Kevin Burns (4-1)
205 lbs.: Jason Lambert (23-7) vs. Luis Arthur Cane (7-1)
170 lbs.: Jess Liaudin (12-9) vs. Paul Taylor (8-3-1)
265 lbs.: Eddie Sanchez (8-1) vs. Antoni Hardonk (6-4)

This line up has been shuffled more times than a tired deck of cards. However, and this is more than likely a minority view, it’s got some very solid top-heavy match ups. In fact, all five guaranteed televised bouts have serious implications within their respective divisions, particularly in the main event of the evening.

Regardless, there will be a glut of comments below about how “this card sucks,” it “should be free on SpikeTV,” and how Dana White and the promotion “should apologize” to the British fans.

It’s silly. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Plain and simple. For now let’s talk about fights and some predictions … crybabies move on.

Keep in mind that we will also be the spot for the latest news, recaps and post-fight analysis after UFC 85.

Jesse Holland back again for another round of discussion with MMA guru Ariel Helwani at MMARated.com previewing the EliteXC primetime CBS event “Saturday Night Fights” that takes place tomorrow (Saturday, May 31) from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

In addition, we went over the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) blockbuster show set for the Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif., on Sunday, June 1, which features the 145-pound showdown between featherweight champion Urijah Faber and challenger Jens Pulver.

Here are some specific discussion points:

  • The lack of promotion in the NYC/NJ metro area for the Elite XC show
  • The historical significance of this weekend’s cards
  • Is Kimbo for real?
  • Does James Thompson have a chance?
  • Gina Carano’s place in history
  • How lucky is Scott Smith?
  • The hype surrounding Faber vs. Pulver
  • How does Pulver solve the mystery that is Urijah Faber?

As always, a big thanks to Ariel for having me on. And an even bigger thanks to site commandant Mania for having a voice like Alf — thus allowing me to do so many guest appearances. Check it out here when you get the chance.

And don’t forget to tune into CBS tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET and Versus at 9 p.m. on Sunday!

UFC Quick Quote: Mauricio ‘Shogun Rua’ vs Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou smack talk heats up

Posted: 30 May 2008 09:58 AM CDT

sokoudjou

“I would love to fight that guy. I’ve tried to fight him ever since I fought in PRIDE and he’s been ducking me. Shogun has been ducking me since the PRIDE days. Shogun’s camp told me that to fight him, I had to fight Cyborg first. I told them I want to fight Shogun, not Cyborg, and then Pride went away and now he’s in the UFC and he hasn’t fought for a minute. I know he got injured for his last fight, but I think by the time I’m ready to fight again, hopefully he should be ready and will take the fight…. Good luck to him trying to get me to the ground. I got my ass kicked once on the ground so you think I just went home and didn’t do anything on the ground? I spent hours and hours fighting off of my back.”

– Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou — who briefly called out Mauricio “Shogun” Rua after he defeated Kazuhiro Nakamura this past weekend at UFC 84: “Ill Will — sharpens the rhetoric in a recent interview with FightHype.com. “The African Assassin” holds two decisive knockout wins over fellow Brazilians, Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, under the Pride FC banner. He apparently is eager for a third. Shogun, meanwhile, has his sights set on former light heavyweight champion, Chuck Liddell, while he recovers from knee surgery.

UFC 84 medical suspensions and injuries

Posted: 30 May 2008 08:47 AM CDT

ufc 84 medical suspensions
If a fighter didn’t break his nose last weekend at UFC 84: “Ill Will” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, then he is perhaps in the minority.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently issued its medical suspensions for the pay-per-view (PPV) event that took place on Saturday, May 24, revealing that Keith Jardine (possible), Wilson Gouveia, Kazuhiro Nakamura and Jason Tan all sustained nasal fractures in their respective bouts.

In addition, Tito Ortiz appears to have injured his left hand and wrist during his light heavyweight bout with Lyoto Machida, which will require X-rays and clearance from an orthopedic doctor before returning to competition.

Here’s the complete list of injuries and their medical instructions:

Sean Sherk — “The Muscle Shark” is suspended until July 9 and there is no contact until June 24 because of a right cheek laceration.

Keith Jardine — “The Dean of Mean” must clear a possible nasal fracture with a doctor or no contest until November 21. His minimum suspension and no contest will last until July 24 and there’s no contact until July 9.

Goran Reljic – The Croatian is suspended until June 24 and there is no contact allowed until June 15.

Wilson Gouveia — The American Top Team-trained fighter sustained nasal and maxillary sinus fractures that need to be cleared by an Ear Nose and Throat ENT specialist, as well as broken ribs that need to be cleared by a doctor, or no contest until November 21. His minimum suspension will last until July 24 and there is no contact allowed until July 9.

Tito Ortiz — “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” must have his left hand and wrist x-rayed and cleared by an orthopedic physician or no contest until November 21. His minimum suspension will last until July 9 and there is no contact allowed June 24 because of a right eyelid laceration.

Antonio Mendes — The Brazilian is suspended until June 24.

Kazuhiro Nakamura — The Japanese Judoka must clear a nasal fracture with a doctor there is no contest until November 21. There is a minimum no contest until July 9 and no contact until June 24.

Terry Etim — The British lightweight is suspend until June 24 and there is no contact allowed until June 15 because of a right cheek laceration.

Jason Tan — Tan must clear a nasal fracture with a doctor or no contest until November 21. There’s a minimum no contest until July 9 and no contact until June 24.

Christian Wellisch — “The Hungarian Nightmare is suspended until June 8 and there’s no contact allowed until June 1.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Gina Carano vs Kaitlin Young Elite XC on CBS fight preview

Posted: 29 May 2008 09:20 PM CDT

gina carano kaitlin young
Elite XC "Saturday Night Fights" is set to go off live from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., this Saturday, May 31 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. To get us prepared for the historic event, we plan to showcase a daily feature for each main card fight leading up to the historic mixed martial arts debut on network television. These features will include information on the fighters, predictions, as well as training notes and quotes from each fighter.

The third fight set for the historic Elite XC mixed martial arts event on the CBS broadcast this Saturday is the only woman’s match on the card — Gina Carano (5-0) vs. Kaitlin Young (4-1).

Elite XC Live Events President Gary Shaw has recently revealed his plans to create an Elite XC woman’s championship belt by the end of this year. He has also been quoted saying this fight would determine one of the competitors in the first-ever woman’s championship match.

Here’s a little background on each fighter:

Gina Carano — Gina is the most recognized female fighter in the world right now. Her combination of good looks and certifiable talent makes her an easy face to remember … and market.

In fact, she’s been able to parlay the combination into a role on NBC’s American Gladiators as “Crush.” The show was successful enough to be brought back for a second season.

As far as her fighting credentials, she’s been fighting professionally in mixed martial arts for less than two years. However, her successful Muay Thai and kickboxing background have transitioned very well to the sport, as she’s undefeated including back-to-back wins inside the Elite XC cage.

Carano was a part of the first woman’s MMA match ever sanctioned in Nevada against Rosi Sexton, as well as the first Elite XC female match against Julie Kedzie. It only makes sense she be a part of the first female fight on network television.

Kaitlin Young — Kaitlin is a 22-year-old mixed martial arts fighter out of Circle Pines, Minn., and full-time student at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where she majors in Kinesiology.

She has a Muay Thai and kickboxing background as well, and has trained extensively in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and wrestling since making the transition to mixed martial arts in October of last year.

Young won her debut with a second round technical over Lindsey Frandrop. A month later she competed in a Hook n Shoot tournament, during which she defeated three other women in one night — all by first round knockouts.

Riding high on the impressive tournament win, she took on Sara Schneider in a February BoDog Fight event. Kaitlin, however, fell victim to a late second round armbar in that fight, but her showing combined with the dominance in the Hook n Shoot tournament was still enough to earn her a spot in the first ever woman’s MMA fight on CBS.

Training notes and quotes:

Gina Carano — Carano trains in Las Vegas, Nevada, out of the Extreme Couture camp. Randy Couture is known for designing great game plans for fights and has turned to passing on his knowledge for now while he waits for another chance to fight. There are now six Extreme Couture gyms in the United States.

Notable fighters and instructors out of Extreme Couture are Forrest Griffin, Tyson Griffin, Karo Parisyan, Martin Kampmann, and Gray Maynard among others.

Gina has admitted recently that she hasn’t been able to devote the amount of time and energy she would have liked into training for this fight with Young.

Here’s a quote:

“My training has been pumped up for the last two weeks. I had a little side shot with ‘American Gladiators” so we’re going to see how I perform with this crunch-time training. I wish I would have had nine weeks completely to focus on it like Kaitlin. But there’s not going to be any excuses. I just chose to do ‘American Gladiators’ and take my time away from it. So am I concerned? No. I feel more mentally clear than I’ve probably ever felt in my life. I think I’m good. I think I’m confident. I’ve got the next two weeks to kind of sharpen everything up and I’m ready to fight.”

And when she was asked to make a prediction:

“I think this fight could go either way and I’m planning it on favoring me. But we’re pretty equal in our stand up. I’m expecting a pretty equal match up. As soon as I get in that cage with her then I’ll be able to kind of gauge where we’re at.”

Hopefully for Carano, it’s not a case of too little too late.

Kaitlin Young — Kaitlin trains out of Minnesota Martial Arts Academy in Brooklyn Center, Minn. The gym was founded in 1992 by ex-collegiate wrestler, Greg Nelson. Some notable fighters out of this camp are former UFC lightweight champ Sean Sherk, UFC heavyweight Brock Lesnar, Nick Thompson, Derrick Noble and Brock Larson.

Everybody remembers Sean Sherk’s insane workout on “All Access.” If that’s anything close to the way Kaitlin Young is working to get ready for this fight, Gina Carano might be in trouble.

In fact, see for yourself, here’s a link to a video of Kaitlin doing what she calls her “Cave Man” training routine:

Also, here’s a quote from Kaitlin during a conference a couple of weeks ago about how she feels representing female MMA on such a big stage:

“I’m honored to be fighting on the CBS card and fighting her as well. I think it’s going to be a great match up, a great stylistic match up. The beauty of our sport is that styles make fights. I really think this will be a great one. Training’s been going very well. I had a lot of notice for this fight so I’ve been lucky to be able to put in more time for this one than ever before. So I’m really excited about that and really excited to be representing women’s MMA for the first time. It’s going to be seen by such a large (audience). I think a lot of people don’t realize there are so many women fighters. Fortunately, EliteXC is there to showcase women’s fighting. It’s a great honor to be part of it.”

And when asked to give a prediction on the fight:

“Like I said, it really is such a great honor. I do feel a tremendous obligation to perform well and represent female fighters well. I think it’s going to be a really good fight. She’s tough and very athletic. So I think it could go other way. Obviously I’m going to do everything in my power to make it go my way. But I can’t give a sure-fire prediction on that one.”

Talk about diplomatic.

How the fight will go:

There’s a common theme for all the main card fights on this show — none of the fighters are completely comfortable on the ground and would much rather prefer to stand.

This fight is no different.

Both women have extensive backgrounds in Muay Thai and kickboxing and both have made the move to MMA a successful one.

We’ve seen from Gina in her two fights in Elite XC the ability continuously push the pace. She’s also not scared to hit or be hit. Most of us haven’t seen much fight tape on Kaitlin, but three knockouts in one night is beyond impressive.

Gina will be the bigger fighter, but not necessarily the stronger fighter. Kaitlin’s training is nuts, and she’s had a long camp. Gina, on the other hand, can’t say the same thing. That could make all the difference.

Both will be high as kites on adrenaline, and that should carry them through a hard fought three round war. I see this one being a back and forth affair with the better cardio prevailing.

Here’s what I see happening:

They’ll come out swinging, but under control. They both respect one another’s game, and neither wants to get put down early. I think the first round will be very close, but Gina has more to prove with all the hype she’s been getting. She’ll be pushing the pace more and will probably score more points with the judges.

I look for Kaitlin to come out in the second a little fresher and a lot more assertive. I can even see Gina getting rocked pretty good in this round. I want to call a second round technical knockout for Kaitlin, but I can’t see Gina getting stopped in this fight — it’s too big of a stage.

Therefore, I have Kaitlin’s training and cardio giving her the edge to out strike Gina in the last two rounds and pull out a decision. I think she’ll have to prove her case a little more with the judges than Gina will because of all the hype, but I think she’ll do that.

Keep in mind this fight is three three-minute rounds, instead of three five-minute rounds.

Final Prediction:

MMA Quick Quote: Elite XC (Kimbo Slice) on CBS … good or bad?

Posted: 29 May 2008 11:18 AM CDT

kimbo slice

“EliteXC is a desperate promotion that's hemorrhaging money. It's willing to sell anything, even a false portrait of its sport, to succeed. Kimbo is a guy with unexpected and most likely fleeting earning potential; understandably he's willing to cash in even if it means tomato-can opponents and an image so unfortunately stereotypical. CBS is so focused on quick television ratings, it will present a cheap trick, lowest common denominator show. This, rather than an introduction to a sport that if treated with respect and patience could grow into a powerful property. Everyone is using. Everyone is getting used. In the end, what will be left from this experiment?… Will MMA on CBS just be a short-run, freak show discarded by all, left to return to its true roots and better promotions after the circus has left town?… Saturday's card is not set up to show the best of mixed martial arts and introduce America to a sport it would likely embrace. If CBS was trying to build serious interest in football, it wouldn't trot out an unproven pro team against a doomed high school squad and call the ensuing blowout the best the game offers. It'd get the New England Patriots and the New York Giants and let people see the real deal. But neither the network nor EliteXC are treating the sport or Kimbo Slice as anything but disposable programming. And that's the problem here.”

– Dan Wetzel at Yahoo!Sports.com raises some concerns about the network television debut of mixed martial arts on CBS this weekend at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. In particular, the “use” of YouTube.com street fighting sensation-turned mixed martial artist, Kimbo Slice, in the main event of the evening. What say you?

Roan Carneiro vs Kevin Burns UFC 85 fight latest fight card change

Posted: 29 May 2008 09:36 AM CDT

roan carneiroKevin Burns (4-1) will make his Octagon debut at UFC 85: "Bedlam" at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7, stepping up on short notice to take on Roan Carneiro (12-6) in a welterweight tilt, according to UFC.com.

Burns replaces an injured Ryo Chonan — no specific details of the injury were revealed at this time. It's the latest hit to a card that has been hit hard –- early an often -– with injuries and replacements.

Here's his take on the big opportunity:

"He is an extremely tough opponent with great wrestling skills and top positioning. He is definitely looking to take his fights to the ground and look for the submission. He has also fought some of the toughest in the world."

Burns is a Glory Fighting Championships (GFC) and Victory Fighting Championships (VFC) fight veteran – both of which are Midwest-based promotions that are located near his home base of Des Moines, Iowa. He has never gone past the second round in any of his fights, winning a majority if his bouts via submission.

Carneiro dispatched of Tony DeSouza via technical knockout at UFC 79: "Nemesis" in December 2007, elevating his record inside the Octagon to above .500. "Jucao"— who recently signed on to train at American Top Team — has a submission loss to Jon Fitch and a unanimous decision win over Rich Clementi.

The Brazilian –- who is massive for 170 pounds — was supposed to take on Diego Sanchez at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion;" however, he had to withdraw from the fight because of an illness.

Tito Ortiz: ‘Me going to somewhere else is 100% happening’

Posted: 29 May 2008 08:35 AM CDT

Props: MMAWeekly.com

Quoteworthy;

"Me going to somewhere else is 100% happening…. Later on after the fight was over, I was sitting down going over the loss, I think that's when it really touched me that that's going to be my last time walking out for the UFC. It's really hard to say, but the president, the way he treats me, I can't continue on with them. He's a monster and I'm going to go elsewhere where they respect me…. No, I'm not going back to the UFC, I don't want to. I can sleep now and not worry about what's going to be said about me. I don't have to worry about what I have to say to make sure I say the right thing. I'm sick of kissing ass and I'm not doing it anymore."

Former UFC light heavyweight champion TIto Ortiz confirms that he will no longer compete inside the Octagon. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” left the door open for a possible return — despite his epic public feuds with promotion president Dana White — immediately following his loss to Lyoto Machida at UFC 84: “Ill Will” on May 24. In fact, reports circulated that the owner of the organization, Lorenzo Fertitta, offered Ortiz a new (and better) contract prior to the fight. He’s apparently had time to mull the offer, as well as the working environment, and has determined that he will be better off elsewhere.

Matt Arroyo vs Matt Brown Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale fight scheduled (Exclusive)

Posted: 28 May 2008 11:17 PM CDT

It’s another battle of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) contestants as season six alumnus Matt “No Regard” Arroyo (3-1) is scheduled to face season seven’s Matt Brown (6-6) on The Ultimate Fighter 7 finale at The Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, June 21, 2008, at 9 p.m. ET on SpikeTV.

MMAmania.com exclusively learned of the welterweight bout earlier this evening.

This match is not the first meeting between the two. Brown holds a second-round TKO victory over the Cobleskill native from their November 2006 fight during Real Fighting Championship 7 at Tampa’s USF Sun Dome.

TUF 6 notwithstanding, Arroyo is 2-0 since that bout, last defeating John Kolosci via submission (armbar) at the Ultimate Fighter 6 finale last December. Brown on the other hand last fought UFC veteran Chris Lytle at Indiana’s United Fight League where he was submitted in the second round by a guillotine choke.

This should be an interesting rematch between two competitors who are pretty evenly matched.

TUF 7 Finale will feature the middleweight showdown between former 185-pound champion, Evan Tanner, and TUF 3 middleweight winner, Kendall Grove. In addition, Diego Sanchez will meet Luigi Fioravanti in a welterweight tilt and the finalists from this season of TUF will meet in the finals to determine the tournament winner.

The Ultimate Fighter 7: Episode 9 recap and discussion

Posted: 28 May 2008 10:31 PM CDT

It’s quarterfinal time and Forrest has to decide who to corner since the first round is teammate vs teammate (blame Forrest for going 6-2 in the preliminary matches) but he can’t / won’t decide so it comes down to the science of the coin toss.

Two will stay at home and train with the rest of Team Brown and two will be cast aside like flotsam and jetsam.

One flick later and it’s official: Forrest corners Jesse Taylor and Amir Sadollah and Rampage is stuck with Dante Rivera and Matt Brown.

Back at the house Jesse gets his White Castle on and sucks down a few sliders to show off his nutritional expertise. They guys hate on him for eating like he’s going to the chair yet has a body like he’s going to the beach.

Dante feels like he’s improved since his last fight and looks to come out with a better showing against Jesse Taylor. Meanwhile, Coach Rampage is so committed to the new additions that he takes a quick nap during training.

Jesse Taylor is tipping the scales a bit heavy so he puts on a rubber suit and sweats his way to success after a game of full contact ping-pong.

He then rewards himself with a dip in the hot tub. Unfortunately he has to bleed the lines and instead of using a toilet like most normal folks, Ol’ Jesse simply steps out of the jacuzzi and urinates through his shorts onto the pavement.

Not content with being merely repulsive, Taylor graduates to reprehensible by shaking off his leg and jumping right back into the hot tub which has now become a urine cappucino.

An unsuspecting Dante jumps in and bathes in Taylors lemonade. And I thought piss-Christ was offensive. Congratulations Jesse Taylor on replacing Gabe “Colonic” Reudiger as TUF’s most egregious contestant.

Prior to the fight, “Gentleman” Jesse Taylor admits he doesn’t like to touch gloves before engaging but will this time because Dante Rivera is a friend. What a guy.

Quarterfinal fight #1: Jesse Taylor (6-2) vs Dante Rivera (10-2)

Round 1: Rivera swings and misses and Taylor takes him down and immediately rains down hammer fists. Rivera trying to hold him close without much success. Taylor is simply overpowering Rivera who is starting to take punishment. Taylor covering the mouth of Rivera and posturing up and landing. Rinse and repeat. Taylor stands up and eats an upkick and returns to Rivera’s guard. More punishment ensues. Thirty seconds left in the round Taylor seems content to simply smother. Round one ends and it was all Taylor.

Round 2: Dante is busted up and Taylor is sucking wind. In a repeat of round one, Rivera swings and misses and gets taken down. Taylor can be heard grunting as he tries to land punches from the top which is a clear indication that he’s low on fuel. Rampage finally chimes in (someone must have woken him up) and screams at Dante to stand up and do something. He seems content to stay in guard and is saved by the referee (as are we) when he puts them to their feet. Taylor laughs in the face of stand-up and immediately takes him back down. Action has slowed but Taylor is landing periodically. Rivera has no answer and seems resigned to just stay in guard and take punishment. Round two ends just like round one. This one is academic (and anticlimactic).

Jesse Taylor defeats Dante Rivera via unanimous decision.

Not exactly a barnburner but Taylor gets the win and with only one contract that’s all that really matters.

The focus quickly shifts to the second fight of the evening between Matt Brown and Amir Sadollah - who get awfully chummy before the fight. Amir is once again bursting with confidence and considers Matt Brown a trained killer. Rampage likes Matt Brown’s warrior spirit.

Quarterfinal fight #2: Amir Sadollah (0-0) vs Matt Brown (9-6)

Round 1: Brown stalks and lands a couple of punches and kicks. Sadollah with a front kick. Follows with a jab and a knee. They tie up and Sadollah pushes him to the cage. Nice knee to the ribs by Sadollah. Brown looking for the trip but Sadollah fights it off. Nice display of defense by Sadollah. Brown eats an elbow and tries again for the trip. He fails but backs away and sneaks in some strikes. Nice straight head kick by Sadollah. Brown retaliates with a flurry. Back to the cage for both men. Brown still looking for the trip and backs away. Nice jab lands for Brown. Then a left. A Brown low kick stumbles Sadollah. Back to the cage and they exchange knees. They break and trade punches that land. Brown with a takedown but Sadollah rolls out and they get back to their feet. A return to the cage as time expires. Action packed first round. Very close.

Round 2: Brown opens with a hard flurry. Flying White Lotus kick misses for Sadollah. Brown retreats and eats a few. They end up against the cage and wrestle for position. Nice knee by Brown. Missed kick by Sadollah. Brown lands a few more. Sadollah backs him up and trips him down. Sadollah on top now looking to create space. Brown looking a little lethargic on the bottom. Sadollah punches the body. Brown almost has an escape but falls backwards. Sadollah back on top working the elbow. Brown is bushed. Sadollah resorts to a man-hug and Brown rolls out. Amir immediately looks for the armbar but Brown transitions and gets trapped in the triangle. Brown taps.

Amir Sadollah defeats Matt Brown via submission (triangle choke - R2).

After the fight Brown shows a ton of class and congratulates Sadollah for the performance. Brown also gets mad respect when he mans up and admits that while disappointed, he gave it 100% and got bested.

This was an exciting fight and pretty much saved the episode. Anyone who doesn’t understand what was wrong with the fight between Taylor and Rivera should re-watch Brown vs. Sadollah. Kudos to both men for a great fight.

Stay tuned next week as Jeremy May comes back from obscurity to start trouble with Jesse Taylor, CB Dolloway tries to punish Cale Yarbrough, and the semifinal matches are announced.

See you then!

Jamie Varner vs Marcus Hicks WEC lightweight title fight set for August 3

Posted: 28 May 2008 09:00 PM CDT

jamie varner marcus hicks wec
Newly crowned WEC Lightweight Champion, Jamie Varner (14-2), will return to defend his 155-pound belt for the first time ever against Marcus Hicks (8-0) on August 3, according to MMAWeekly.com.

It’s the second title fight slated for the show — WEC Light Heavyweight Champion Brian Stann is also expected to defend his 205-pound title against Steve Cantwell.

“The Worm” is fresh off an impressive knockout of then-WEC champion, “Razor” Rob McCullough, at WEC 32 back February, defeating the heavy-handed champion at his own game. It was his third straight win and second consecutive victory under the WEC banner.

Varner will certainly have to bring his “A” game — “The Wrecking Ball” is no slouch.

In fact, Hicks is one of the hottest (and most compact) fighters in the promotion, winning his last three fights in the WEC, and overall, is riding an eight fight win streak. He has defeated the likes of Ed Ratcliff and Sergio Gomez en route to being the number one contender in the division.

Put simply, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt — who also has some pro boxing experience — will be a stiff challenge for Varner

Stay tuned for more fight announcements and other news in the next few days as WEC 34: “Faber vs Pulver” is set for this weekend — the organization will certainly look to promote upcoming events on the biggest night in its history.

Phil Baroni vs Joey Villasenor Elite XC on CBS fight preview

Posted: 28 May 2008 08:32 PM CDT

elitexc baroni villasenor
Elite XC "Saturday Night Fights" is set to go off live from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., this Saturday, May 31 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. To get us prepared for the historic event, we plan to showcase a daily feature for each main card fight leading up to the historic mixed martial arts debut on network television. These features will include information on the fighters, predictions, as well as training notes and quotes from each fighter.

The second fight set for the televised main card of the night is a middleweight showdown between Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni (10-9) and Joey Villasenor (25-6).

Here’s a little background on each fighter:

Phil Baroni — At 32 years old, Baroni has been around the block in the fight game in nearly a decade competing in the sport. He’s definitely had his share of ups and downs. Perhaps his lowest point came last June when he tested positive for two types of anabolic steroids immediately following a second round submission loss in a Strikeforce and Elite XC co-promoted fight against Frank Shamrock.

While Baroni was beat pretty soundly by Shamrock, he still showed a lot of heart. Enough, in fact, for Icon Sport — a sister company of Elite XC — to grant him a shot at their vacant middleweight title against Hawaiian, Kala Kalohe Hose. Again, Baroni showed the heart of a lion — albeit in defeat once again — as Hose ended an absolute war with a fifth round technical knockout.

It’s no secret that Baroni’s game is to stand and bang, and that usually makes for an exciting fight whether he wins or loses.

He has notable wins against Ryo Chonan, Dave Menne and Yuki Kondo, as well as notable losses to Matt Lindland (twice), Evan Tanner (twice), Shamrock and Kazuo Misaki.

Joey Villasenor — Villasenor is also 32 years old and has been around the block himself in the mixed martial arts scene. While more than half of his professional fights have been for King of the Cage (KOTC), he has fought in eight different MMA promotions, including two fights under the Pride FC banner.

Villasenor was the KOTC middleweight champion and at one time reeled off 15 straight victories. That impressive feat earned him a berth in the prestigious 2006 Pride FC Middleweight Grand Prix in June of that same year. However, he lost in the first round to Ryo Chonan via split decision.

The eye-catching performance gained him another fight for the famed Japanese promotion, this time against cuurent Elite XC Middleweight Champion, Robbie Lawler. Villasenor was caught by a flying knee less than 20 seconds into the fight. Since then, he’s made his home in Elite XC where he’s 3-1.

He has notable wins against David Loiseau, Jorge Santiago and Riki Fukada, as well as notable losses to Chonan, Lawler, “Ninja” Rua and David Terrell

Training notes and quotes from each fighter:

Phil Baroni — Baroni used to train out of Team Hammer House, but now trains with American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) — home to three of the UFC’s top welterweight contenders, Josh Koshcheck, Mike Swick and Jon Fitch.

The camp has a lot of success in taking accomplished collegiate wrestlers like Fitch, Koscheck and Baroni and helping them develop into better all around fighters. Baroni, in fact, used to train at AKA during his Pride days, and he says he’s undefeated when training out there.

Here’s some quotes from Baroni during a conference call for this event earlier last week:

“I would fight the winner of Smith and Lawler. Isn’t the plan to beat the champion? I was just listening to Smith. He said he can knock out anyone. I don’t get knocked out. Smith won’t knock me out. So, that’s a fight. If he wins, I’ll be there in the center of the ring. We can go toe-to-toe and trade. I don’t lose those fights. I’ll be watching that fight after I put Smokin’ Joe VillaseÅ„or on ice. “

On his ground game:

” It f***ing blows, and it is not going to the ground. Who cares about the ground game? Smokin’ Joe tries to stand and trade. You saw his last fight. He likes to bang. So, this is going to be a great fight. That’s why it’s on CBS. It is going to be two guys in there and throwing down for another exciting fight. VillaseÅ„or is not going to leave until he’s carried out on a stretcher. My ground game doesn’t make a difference. Who cares about a ground game anyway? Nobody wants to watch that s**t.”

And one more snip:

“Guys like me and Lawler have been fighting for a long time. We were in the UFC when no one knew what the UFC was. We’ve been fighting for chump change. We’re fighters. That’s what we do. Yeah, it’s great to be on CBS, but when we got into this sport it wasn’t even on pay per view. So, it’s great to be on CBS and it’s great to have all that exposure and everything else. But, I didn’t get into fighting because I wanted to be a rock star, and neither did a guy like Lawler. That’s not why we did it. I don’t really give a sh**t about Gary Shaw’s watch or his Ferrari. I do it for pride, and I do it to set high goals and accomplishments. Six million people in the world and there’s only one world champion. Lawler is that guy right now. So, I really don’t think it matters to him or the real fighters about fighting on CBS. “

Now that’s a fighter.

Joey Villasenor — Joey trains with one of the premiere camps in all of MMA, the Greg Jackson camp out of Albuquerque, alongside Keith Jardine, Rashad Evans, Nate Marquardt and UFC Welterweight Champion, George St. Pierre.

Jackson’s fighters are always known to have great cardio, training in the high altitude in Albuquerque and spending a lot of time running in the mountains. Sparring with other great fighters can only be doing wonders for every part of Villasenor’s game.

Here’s some quotes from the conference call from Joey:

“Come on, this is 'Phil the Mouth’ Baroni. Hands down, he is going to beat me in a words war, but he definitely has to deal with a lot of heart. I know I’m going into enemy territory, which totally gets me pumped. I know Baroni is going to have some family members there, and I’m excited, man. I’m actually shaking in my pants right now. I’m a little nervous right now, and Baroni has quite the mouth. I am not going to talk much. I respect Baroni. I respect the power. But, he says he doesn’t get knocked out. We’ll just have to test that out.”

And on Baroni’s all around game:

“I think Baroni is right. His ground game does suck. I’m sure that’s what he wants, for us to bang it out where he has an opportunity win. I hope he doesn’t go down form shock because I’ll have to have to choke him out like Shamrock did. I think my overall game is improving daily. I have power with movement. It’s about executing. Overall, we all know that Baroni has stand‑up power, but I’m going to try to expose him with my movement. So, it’s just all about executing.”

How the fight will go:

This one isn’t hard to figure out. Both guys usually prefer to stand and trade strikes. And both have really good boxing and knockout power. This fight is definitely going to be a stand up war.

Like Villasenor said, I look for him to use a lot of movement at first to avoid Baroni’s early attack. Baroni always comes out like a bat out of hell and looks for the knockout as early as possible. He has a lot of power, especially during his early runs, and Villasenor will have to weather that storm.

While Baroni’s first round onslaughts are always exciting and sometimes lead to early finishes, he always wastes a lot of crucial energy in that first round. If Villasenor can use some head movement and footwork to avoid Baroni early, he’ll probably be able to use that same movement and footwork to out box him late, possibly even earn a knockout.

Here’s what I see happening:

Baroni will come out swinging for the fences and the two will trade some early blows. Villasenor, however, will frustrate Baroni with his boxing and he won’t be fazed by the early charge from Baroni. He’ll stick to his gameplan of good footwork, head movement and boxing.

Even though Baroni has the edge in power, I don’t think he is a better technical striker. I can see him getting picked apart in this fight. And unless Baroni gets a big knockout early, I think he’s in trouble.

The longer the fight goes, and the more tired Baroni gets, the more he’s going to get frustrated with Villasenor’s boxing and more importantly his cardio. We know those Greg Jackson guys are always in great shape. I think it’ll be the difference in this fight.

I say it ends in the third round. Baroni won’t have enough left to be doing anything more than throwing lazy haymakers and shooting for half-hearted takedown attempts.

The fresher Villasenor will still be executing his gameplan of outboxing Baroni, and Baroni is going to be vulnerable to a knockout late. His hands will be down, his chin will be up and he’ll lean right into a Joey Villasenor knockout punch.

Final Prediction:

Joey Villasenor via third round knockout.

Check back in tomorrow as we go in-depth with a look at the ladies, Gina Carano and Kaitlin Young.

Donald Cerrone vs Danny Castillo WEC 34 fight booked with Rich Crunkilton injured

Posted: 28 May 2008 04:14 PM CDT

donald cerroneGladiator Challenge and Palace Fighting Championship veteran, Danny Castillo (5-0), will step in for an injured Rich Crunkilton to face Donald Cerrone (7-0) at WEC 34: “Faber vs Pulver” at the Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif., on June 1.

The Zuffa-owned promotion recently confirmed the lightweight match up on its Web site.

Castillo has only been fighting nearly a year and a half; however, his five victories have all ended in the first round — four via submission and one technical knockout. “Last Call” — who will make his WEC debut — is a two-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-American wrestler out of Menlo, Calif.

Meanwhile, his opponent, Cerrone, is currently riding a seven-fight winning streak of his own, defeating Kenneth Alexander via submission (triangle choke) at WEC 30 in November 2007. However, it was later ruled a “no contest” because Cerrone was found to have a banned diuretic in his system after the bout.

This will mark his first fight back after an eight month suspension and $2,400 fine.

Both of these fighters are red hot, but someone’s zero has to go and it will take place LIVE on the Versus network at 9 p.m. ET this Sunday.

WEC 34: “Faber vs. Pulver” is headlined by the biggest featherweight title fight in recent memory. Urijah Faber will defend his 145-pound strap against MMA legend, Jens Pulver, in the evening’s main event.

Just another reminder: It’s FREE on Versus at 9 p.m. ET.

The UFC 85: “Bedlam” card carousel continues to swirl.

Eddie Sanchez (8-1) will fill-in for Neil Wain — who sustained a broken nose during training — and take on Antoni Hardonk (6-4) at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7, according to UFC.com.

Here’s a snip from the “Manic Hispanic” on the heavyweight bout:

"I think he's a great kickboxer. But it's not a kickboxing match – it's an MMA fight."

Sanchez is actually on a two-fight win streak since his technical knockout loss to Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 67: “All or Nothing” in February 2007. Since that time he has pounded out Colin Robinson at UFC 72: “Victory” and Soa Palalei at UFC 79: “Nemesis,” respectively.

He’s got power, which he will put to the test against the Dutch kickboxer.

Hardonk most recently also took out Robinson, winning their fight at UFC 80: “Rapid Fire” in January just 17 seconds into round one. The victory snapped a two-fight losing skid during which he dropped fights to Justin McCully and Frank Mir.

Wain — who was set to make his Octagon debut — is just the latest in a long line of casualties to hit the UFC 85 fight card. Chuck Liddell, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Rashad Evans, James Irvin and Chris Leben have all been scratched from the pay-per-view (PPV) event for one reason or another since it was announced.
