MMA Quick Quote: Kimbo Slice is a turkey

Posted: 29 Nov 2008 04:25 PM CST

“Big, mean, bearded street fighter, an Internet You Tube sensation, gets a crack at a title in a hugely hyped mixed martial arts bout after only three pro fights, faces a last-minute replacement and — of course — has his big, mean, bearded head handed to him 14 seconds later. Snorrrrre.”

SI.com, which incorrectly states that Elite XCs Kimbo Slice was fighting for a title, nominates the Miami street brawler for a “2008 Turkey of the Year.” Slice was pimped front and center by the now defunct organization because of his YouTube.com exploits. And when he went down against Seth Petruzelli in just 14 seconds back in October he ultimately took down the whole promotion — the “StandGate” controversy surrounding the main event was essentially its death knell. Ocho Cinco, Al Davis, Mark Cuban, Roger Clemens and Jeremy Shockey are some of the other athletes who made the 23-member list.

It’s kill or be killed for Thiago Silva against Lyoto Machida at UFC 94

Quoteworthy:

"I bet on me [to defeat Lyoto Machida], of course (laughs). I'm well trained and I'm ready. If the fight was in one week I'd already be ready. It's an important fight for me, I'm in the moving on and I'm going [to UFC 94] to kill or die."

Undefeated Chute Boxe-trained mixed martial artist Thiago Silva talks about the importance of his upcoming fight against fellow Brazilian Lyoto Machida at UFC 94: “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 31. It was a highly anticipated 205-pound bout that was originally scheduled for UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" on October 18; however, Silva had to withdraw from the contest because of a back injury sustained during training. He’s apparently all healed ready to rock as soon as next week … to bad we will have to wait until Super Bowl weekend.

Shooto ‘Tradition 4′ results & quick recap

Posted: 29 Nov 2008 10:36 AM CST

Shooto held its ‘Tradition 4′ event earlier today at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Some great fights went down and there were also a few familiar faces in the audience with the likes of Takanori Gomi and others watching in on the action.

Takeshi Inoue was able to add another Shooto belt to his collection. He was the Shooto Pacific Rim Lightweight Champion coming in and now thanks to a hard earned decision victory over Hideki Kadowaki, can now also call himself the new Shooto Lightweight Champion.

If anyone questioned whether or not "Lion Takeshi" deserved to fight for the belt after coming off a loss to Savant Young last May was proven wrong today.

Hatsu Hioki made himself a force to be reckoned with after his first round destruction of Shooto legend Rumina Sato. Sato, known for his unorthodox submission victories like his flying armbar victory over Charles Taylor back in 1999, was unable to recapture some of that glory from the older days and has now lost his fifth fight in six attempts.

Perhaps it's time this Shooto veteran called it a career.

Another Shooto prospect Takashi Nakakura was able to finish his fight in the first round as well with a rear naked choke on Bendy Casimar. Most expected this fight to be a back and forth war but Nakakura completely dominated.

Though both fighters are champions in Shooto no title was on the line in this contest.

So Tazawa had a disappointing weekend. First he failed to make weight for his featherweight bout against Hiromasa Ogikubo and then ended up fighting to a draw. Ogikubo remains undefeated and at twenty-one years old could prove to be another Shooto success story and move onto bigger and better things in the world of mixed martial arts.

Here are the official results for Shooto ‘Tradition 4′:

Shooto Lightweight Championship
Takeshi Inoue (15-3) defeated Hideki Kadowaki (13-8-2) via unanimous decision

Hatsu Hioki (17-3-2) defeated Rumina Sato (24-13-2) by TKO (3:32-R1)
Takashi Nakakura (11-2-1) defeated Bendy Casimir (16-5-2) by rear naked choke (4:58-R1)
So Tazawa (8-3-3) fought Hiromasa Ogikubo (5-0-2) to a draw
Yutaka Ueda (6-1-1) defeated Jin Kazeta (8-9-2) by TKO (3:23-R1)
Atsushi Takeuchi (5-4-2) defeated Katsuya Murofushi (3-4) by rear naked choke (1:44-R2)
Taisuke Okuno (7-2) defeated Daisuke Okumiya (2-3-1) via unanimous decision
Nobuhiro Hayakawa (1-4-3) fought Yuta Nezu (5-2-1) to a draw

Fields Dynamite!!: Gegard Mousasi vs Musashi

Posted: 29 Nov 2008 09:57 AM CST

Gegard Mousasi (24-2-1), winner of DREAM’s 2008 Middleweight World Grand Prix, has officially signed to face four-time K-1 Japan Grand Prix Champion, Musashi (49-28-5-1), in a K-1 rules match at the Fields Dynamite!! supershow on December 31 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Mousasi won the DREAM Middleweight Grand Prix with a stunning first round knockout of Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza back in September. He reached the finals after submitting the dangerous K-1 striker Melvin Manhoef in the first round of the semifinals.

The "Young Vagabond" is an extremely talented fighter and in addition to riding an eleven-fight win streak, is also a former amateur boxing champion and has served as a striking coach for current WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko.

He’ll have his hands full however against the Japanese warrior. Musashi is a former WAKO Heavyweight Muay Thai Champion and two-time K-1 World Grand Prix finalist. He last appeared at K-1 Fields World GP 2008 and dropped a disappointing decision to Brazil’s Ewerton Teixeira.

Musashi has a staggering 83 fights under his belt and isn’t going to be intimidated by Mousasi. Don’t expect this one to go to a decision.

Fields Dynamite!! is the New Year’s Eve supershow featuring a smorgasbord of fighters under the umbrella of Fighting & Entertainment Group (FEG) coming together on one night to try and kick the crap out of each other.

Featuring participants from DREAM, K-1, K-1 MAX and K-1 Koshien, Fields Dynamite!! is going to have a wide variety of fighting styles and compelling match-ups, and could feature as many as twenty fights.

Stay tuned as this massive card continues to come together.

UFCs Joe Lauzon returns from goodwill trip to Middle East

Posted: 29 Nov 2008 08:29 AM CST

Note: Lauzon is penciled in to fight Hermes Franca at UFC Fight Night 7 on February 7, 2008. For more details click here.

E. BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 29, 2008) -– UFC lightweight contender Joe "J-Lau" Lauzon's recent 12-day goodwill trip visiting U.S. military troops in Iraq and Kuwait was a knockout for everybody.

Lauzon (17-4, 4 KOs, 13 submissions), star of The Ultimate Fighter 5 television reality show, was on the trip with fellow mixed-martial arts fighters Jorge Rivera and Heath Herring, as well as some models and ring card girls.

"It was awesome," Lauzon said from home. "It was one of the happiest 12 days of my life. They kept us real busy going from one camp to another. We visited 14 camps in Iraq and Kuwait. The first hour we'd give demonstrations and the second we signed autographs and posed for pictures with them. I was thrilled to see all of them over there, away from their friends and family, but helping all of us back home. It was cool to see how excited and appreciative they were to see us. There are a lot of MMA fans over there, too.

"They watch UFC events on the Armed Forces Network, but, due to the time differences, it's on there at 3 in the morning. They watch and then start their day at 6. The weather wasn't bad. They say it hits 150-160 degrees in the summer, but it is dry heat like in Las Vegas, not humid like it is in Massachusetts. It was between 85 and 105, hit 110 once, while we were there but it wasn't bad at all, especially when I got off the plane back home and it was freezing."

The special guests got to play some poker with the troops, fired weapons a few times, drive around in Humvees, and were transported from camp to camp on Black Hawk helicopters.

"It was a long, busy 12 days," Lauzon concluded. "But I'd definitely do it again. It's something that I'll never forget. I'm glad I did it."

For more information about Joe "J-Lau" Lauzon, who has a bachelor's degree in computer networking from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, go online and visit www.joelauzon.com or myspace.com/lauzonrsd.

No Cop: Overeem vs Filipovic fails to materialize for Fields Dynamite

Posted: 29 Nov 2008 02:53 AM CST

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic will not get a chance to avenge his white scrotus on New Year’s Eve against bitter rival Alistaire Overeem according to Fields Dynamite executive Sadaharu Tanigawa via Free Fight Videos .

At a press conference earlier this week, Tanigawa pushed them to a different card to be held at some point down the road in 2009. The two were originally expected to rematch on December 31 to settle a previous No Contest from their bout at September's DREAM 6.

"Demolition Man" delivered several illegal groin strikes during the bout, providing a disappointing conclusion to a fight that had received much interest and fanfare leading up to it.

Cro Cop promised to deliver a rematch on December 31 but according to Overeem, the Croat never put his money where his sack is.

Here’s the Dutchman talking to Sherdog.com

"I'm afraid Mirko is trying to run from me again. FEG wants to make it happen, I would like nothing more than get my hands on him again and I know that the fans would like to see a definite ending as well, so the only obstacle here is Cro Cop. He's the one who hasn't signed the contract yet and he's the one who is trying to avoid fighting me again because he knows that he will get his ass kicked again. I won't use any knee strikes to the body this time, so he won't have any chance to wimp out of the fight again."

Overeem has looked solid of late, winning four straight consecutive bouts and — before smashing his balls — was putting it to Mirko Cro Cop at DREAM 6 in September. Overeem has been in against some of the best in the business throughout his career and is still in his prime.

Cro Cop vehemently denies any act of cowardice and finally shot back at Overeem yesterday on his native Dnevnik.hr:

"Overeem is a fool. He knows too well that is up to the individual organizations to set-up any match-ups. I'm in a difficult situation as I don't know who to prepare for in this upcoming bout. I'm not sure with which sparing partners to go with. I don't want the public to think that I'm afraid of him, if Overeem doesn't want to wait for New year's eve or some other date next year to fight me. If he doesn't believe I don't get to choose my opponent and that maybe Dream doesn't want us to fight on New year then he can come to Zagreb next weekend and we can fight in my cage with neutral referees."

Overeem is still expected to battle at Fields Dynamite toward the end of the year. One of the names being thrown around is dangerous Russian striker Sergei Khratitonov.

Now that’s a rubber match I’m interested in seeing.

Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva disregards CSAC suspension and will fight Yoshihiro Nakao at Sengoku

Posted: 28 Nov 2008 11:28 PM CST

The year-long suspension handed down to the first and only Elite XC Heavyweight Champion, Antonio Silva (11-1), following his positive steroid test in July apparently won’t keep the Brazilian giant from competing after all.

The Japanese promotion World Victory Road has signed “Bigfoot” to compete on its next Sengoku event scheduled to take place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on January 4. Yoshihiro Nakao (7-1) — the man who Heath Herring infamously knocked out before their fight even started after getting kissed — has been confirmed as his opponent.

As of right now Silva is eligible to re-apply for a license to fight in the United States in July of 2009, but taking a fight in another country that doesn’t recognize the suspension is not going to look good on that application. In fact, he could face an uphill battle in the future with this move.

Time will tell.

Silva is undefeated as a heavyweight with wins over Wesley “Cabbage” Correira, Jonathan Wiezorek, Ricco Rodriquez and Justin Eilers under the Elite XC banner.

Nakao is probably best known for his “fight” against Heath Herring at a K-1 event on New Year’s Eve in 2005. The bout was ruled a no contest when Herring struck and knocked out the Japanese fighter during the pre-fight staredown after a bizarre attempt at intimidation from Nakao turned into a straight up kiss on the lips.

In Herring’s defense, there’s probably a lot of fighters out there who would have done the same thing. Nonetheless, Nakao will always be known as “the guy that kissed Heath Herring and got knocked out before the fight even began.”

It was extremely weird to say the least.

Since that time Nakao has compiled a record of (3-1), including his most recent second round knockout of Jim York at another Sengoku event in May. He holds notable career wins over Don “The Master” Frye and Cabbage Correira.

Former Pride FC Lightweight Champion Takanori Gomi will face off against Satoru Kitaoka for the vacant World Victory Road title in the night’s featured bout. In addition, Strikeforce fighter Kazuo Misaki will battle three fight UFC veteran Jorge Santiago for the company’s vacant middleweight strap.

The UFC nails it once again … these promos keep getting better:

Eddie Alvarez signs on with Bellator Fighting Championships for ESPN

Posted: 28 Nov 2008 02:54 PM CST

alvarez
Philadelphia native Eddie Alvarez (15-1) has signed on to compete in the Bellator Fighting Championships eight-man lightweight tournament, which is set to begin airing every Saturday night on ESPN Deportes for 12 straight weeks in April 2009.

The former BoDog welterweight champion confirmed earlier this week with iGuillotine.com that the signing with Bellator was indeed official.

Here’s the snip:

“The contract is signed and I got my advance.”

Alvarez is still under contract with Pro Elite, Adrenaline MMA, Extreme Challenge and DREAM. His unique contract, which rotates between organizations, states that if any of those promoters cannot provide a fight for him that they lose their turn. The Philadelphia native is then free to fight for one of the other promotions.

For that reason, he’s not in the same boat as some of the other ex-Pro Elite fighters who are still trying to free themselves from their contracts with the now defunct company.

Alvarez is no stranger to the tournament format. He stole the show three different times during the 2008 DREAM Lightweight Grand Prix tournament in Japan with sensational wins over Andre “Dida” Amade, Joachim Hansen and Tatsuya Kawajiri on his way to a spot in the final against Shinya Aoki.

However, he was forced out of that championship match because of “some swelling” around his eyes he suffered during his semi-final war with Kawajiri. Aoki went on to lose to Hansen — who was filling in as a replacement — making Alvarez the only one out of the 16-man field to go through the tournament without a loss.

Before competing for Bellator, he’ll first face an unnamed opponent at the Extreme Challenge event at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, N.J., on January 23.

The Bellator Fighting Championships will be the first promotion to bring live MMA events to an ESPN broadcast. During the three month series of events that will be aired on the cable sports network there will also be tournaments in three other weight classes, including middleweight, welterweight and featherweight.

Former Elite XC Featherweight Champion Wilson Reis, welterweight Hector “Shango” Lombard and former WEC middleweight title holder Paulo Filho have all been rumored to be a part of their respective weight classes’ tournaments as well for the Bellator Fighting Championships.

Talk about hitting the ground running.

Ladies night: Female Stack brings beauty without the brawn

Posted: 28 Nov 2008 12:31 PM CST

Woman Stack

It's the post-Thanksgiving Fitness Friday and since we’re coming off those second and third helpings of cornbread stuffing, today’s discussion is perhaps the most important of the year.

We’ve spent a lot of time in previous posts talking about some pretty hardcore routines. In an effort to prove we haven’t forgotten about the lovely ladies that bust their butts inside and outside the gym, Feel It! Nutrition is offering 20% off its new Female Stack - but don’t procrastinate - this sale ends on December 5.

A woman’s body, besides being able to hypnotize and control the male population, has very distinct nutritional needs. Even more so for women who compete in competitive sports or strive to achieve high levels of fitness.

Now most women I know have a fear of looking manly and as a result, abandon a majority - if not all of their gym routines in favor of cardio programs and mail-away videos.

Attention ladies: Muscle is not the enemy!

Because women don’t carry the same testosterone levels as men, they don’t build muscle and bulk up like men do in response to resistance training. Of course I’m not suggesting you spend three hours a day on free weights while sucking down protein shakes like they were shots of tequila, but a sensible weight training program is A MUST for any woman looking to have the complete package.

With that in mind, women of fitness should also learn to free themselves of their dietary prison. Just as lifting weights won’t turn you into Joanie Laurer, eating six meals a day won’t turn you into Darlene Cates.

Dieting is a disposable word. Instead of worrying about eliminating all fats and carbs like many fad diets do, concentrate on removing sugar and saturated fats from your meal plan.

Your body needs well-rounded nutrition, in the same way that it needs well-rounded training to stay at its peak performance. Trying to get that nutrition from your meals is possible, so long as you don’t mind dropping three bills at your local Wegman’s.

For those ladies who don’t have a disposable income but still want to achieve their fitness goals, Feel It! Nutrition is offering their new Female Stack AT A REDUCED PRICE .

Don't worry about trying to figure out which nutritional supplements are going to help you reach or maintain your current fitness goals. The Feel It! Nutrition experts have already done the research for you and assembled the most comprehensive stack for women.

The Feel It! Nutrition Female Stack consists of the following cutting-edge supplements:

Dymatize: The Energizing Fat Burner (120 Capsules)
CytoSport Inc.: 8 Banana Crème Yogurt Bars (2.33 oz)
Universal Nutrition: Women's Fitness Pak
CytoSport Inc.: Low Calorie Lean Muscle Chocolate Milk Flavor Drink Mix (1.65lbs Tub)

The key to using Female Stack is balancing it with your food intake and training regimen. Tracking your progress and keeping a written record of your daily diet and exercise achievements is a great way to keep yourself focused and motivated.

Sorry guys, this one is for ladies only. Get Female Stack ON SALE today and take yourself to the next level.

MMA Quick Quote: Fedor cancels press tour to prepare for ‘dangerous’ Arlovski

Posted: 28 Nov 2008 09:39 AM CST

"My trainers, Vladimir Voronov and Alexander Michkov, met with me in Russia after the World Sambo Championships and we decided that the Arlovski confrontation is too important to delay a comprehensive training camp in exchange for press tour obligations on the other side of the world. Andrei Arlovski is a dangerous fighter and has looked in prime condition and at the top of his game in his last few fights. He is one of the top three heavyweights in the world. This is not a fighter I will defeat if I am taking shortcuts in training."

-Current WAMMA heavyweight champion and Affliction headliner Fedor Emelianenko speaks in a press release about his planned absence from a scheduled press tour to the United States at the start of December with stops set for New York, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles to promote his Janaury 24 superfight with former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski at Affliction ‘Day of Reckoning’. The decision comes on the heels of Emelianenko’s recent loss at the 2008 World Sambo Championships - a tournamnet that "The Last Emperor" only trained for part-time to accomodate for his busy media schedule and movie commitments.

Alistair Overeem: ‘I do see myself defeating Brock Lesnar’

Posted: 28 Nov 2008 09:12 AM CST

Props: FiveOuncesOfPain.com

Quoteworthy:

"It was a good performance but I see some weak spots in Brock's game plan. Although I think he is a very interesting opponent, I'm looking forward to see more of Brock's fights and seeing him develop more…. Yes, and I do see myself defeating Brock Lesnar."

Add the “Demolition Man” to the long list of mixed martial arts veterans who feel confident about their chances against UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. The Dutch fighter has looked solid of late, winning four straight consecutive bouts and — before smashing his balls — was putting it to Mirko Cro Cop at DREAM 6 in September. Overeem has been in against some of the best in the business throughout his career, which would give him a huge experience advantage if he were to ever tangle with Lesnar …. but don’t hold your breath — it’s highly unlikely anytime soon.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou cut from the UFC

Posted: 28 Nov 2008 09:11 AM CST

Be careful if you get a Christmas card from the UFC this month - it might not be that lifetime subscription to the jelly-of-the-month club you were hoping for.

Fresh on the heels of recent releases of Fabricio Werdum and Jorge Gurgel, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou has been cut from the UFC roster according to Five Ounces of Pain .

Sokoudjou, who was signed to the UFC after bursting onto the PRIDE scene with KO wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona, lost his Octagon debut to the undefeated Lyoto Machida via arm-triangle choke in the second round of his highly anticipated debut at UFC 79.

"The African Assassin" rebounded from that loss to finish Kazuhiro Nakamura at UFC 84: "Ill Will" back in May. Soukoudjou poured it on thick in the opening frame and the tough as nails Japanese fighter couldn't answer the bell for the second round.

Unfortunately he was not able to capitalize on that momentum, falling to loose-lipped Luis Cane via second round TKO at UFC 89 back in October. Apparently the UFC doesn’t see a reason to move forward with the still learning twenty-four year old striker and talented Judokan.

No question the Cameroonian’s youth and marketability will have him back on the fight scene sooner rather than later.  Sokoudjou has talent, now he just needs a place he can go to refine it.

I hear Strikeforce is hiring.

Josh Barnett vs Aleksander Emelianenko 2 at Affliction: ‘Day of Reckoning’ ?

Posted: 28 Nov 2008 07:58 AM CST

We reported earlier this week the possibility of former Elite XC star Brett “The Grim” Rogers facing off against world ranked Josh “The Babyface Assassin” Barnett at Affliction: “Day of Reckoning” on January 24. However, a recent interview between Sports.ru (via Fighters Only Magazine) and Russian heavyweight Aleksander Emelianenko suggests otherwise.

Here’s a snip from the younger brother of current WAMMA heavyweight title holder Fedor Emelianenko:

“An agreement has been reached that the Affliction show on January 24th will hold a rematch with the former UFC champion Josh Barnett.”

Aleksander and Barnett first locked horns back in May of 2006 at Pride: “Total Elimination Absolute” with Barnett winning with a second round submission (key lock).

Originally slated to face Paul Buentello at the inaugural Affliction event in July, Emelianenko was forced off the card in the eleventh hour after failing to get medically cleared by the California State Athletic Commission.

Due to privacy regulations, the reasons for him not getting licensed to fight were never fully revealed. However, the rumor mill ran wild with claims that he had tested positive for Hepatitis B — a DNA virus that affects the liver and in rare cases leads to death.

Aleksander and his team denied those reports and apparently feel like there won’t be a problem getting cleared this time around.

He’s currently riding a five match winning streak, including his most recent first round knockout victory over Sang Soo Lee at M-1 Challenge 9 last week in his hometown of St. Petersburg, Russia. There’s also talk of a potential New Year’s Eve fight in Japan for the former two time world Sambo champion.

Here’s another snip:

“There is a chance that before this I will fight at the traditional New Year’s Eve show in Japan. But talks on this fight are still going on.”

“Day of Reckoning” is scheduled to air live on pay-per-view on January 24 beginning at 10 p.m. ET. Some of the under card action will also air live on HDNet prior to the PPV telecast.

Jorge Gurgel released by UFC and signed by Strikeforce

Posted: 27 Nov 2008 09:40 AM CST

jorge gurgel
Strikeforce recently bolstered its lightweight division with the signing of Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Jorge Gurgel (12-5), according to ProMMA.info. Terms of the contract were undisclosed at this time, but he hopes to make his debut with the promotion sometime in early 2009.

The former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) was released from the UFC following a close decision loss to Aaron Riley two weeks ago at UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar,” which was awarded “Fight of the Night” accolades for the performance. In fact, Gurgel also earned similar honors with his win over Diego Saraiva at UFC 73 last July.

With Elite XC falling off the map, Strikeforce has pretty much moved into its place as one of the second tier organizations behind the UFC. Signing an exciting and well-known fighter such as Gurgel can only help the promotion tcontinue to establish itself.

Gurgel had this to say about the news:

“I am very very excited to part of Strikeforce and given a chance to fight new blood and capture a belt. UFC has been my family for a few years now but I am ready for the next chapter. There are some amazing contenders in my weight class including Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez. I will do whatever it takes to climb to the top of this league.”

The adopted Cincinnati, Ohio, native competed seven times in the UFC following his time as a contestant on the second season of TUF. He compiled a record of (3-4) in the Octagon with wins over Danny Abbadi, Diego Saraiva and John Halverson, as well as losses to Riley, Cole Miller, Alvin Robinson and Mark Hominick.

Also the long-time jiu-jitsu coach and training partner for Rich Franklin, Gurgel is highly respected as an instructor, teammate and jiu-jitsu practitioner. Mostly considered a ground specialist, he’s been working with Mark Dellagrotte recently in hopes of establishing a more complete striking game to go along with his already solid mat work.

He’s a talented guy, but was often over matched by the competition provided in the UFC’s tough 155-pound division. By his own admission, Gurgel often fails to execute his gameplans and gets caught up in brawls rather than leveraging his strong ground skils.

Perhaps a fresh start in Strikeforce against some new faces could prove to be a great move for the Brazilian, especially if he keeps improving his all around game with Dellagrotte.

Time will tell.

Jeremy Horn vs Rousimar Palhares UFC 93 fight possible for Dublin

Posted: 27 Nov 2008 09:12 AM CST

Brazilian jiu-jitsu submission specialist Rousimar Palhares (8-2) and mixed martial arts journeyman Jeremy Horn (80-18-5) are expected to collide in a 185-pound tilt at UFC 93 at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on January 17, according to a report confirmed by InTheGuard.tv.

The up-and-coming Palhares recently dropped a unanimous decision to Dan Henderson at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" on September 6. Once again, however, he demonstrated just how dangerous he can be on the ground — Henderson did everything he could to keep the fight standing.

Palhares tapped the experienced Ivan Salaverry with a super slick armbar at UFC 84: "Ill Will" in his Octagon debut back in May. It was so slick, in fact, it earned him a $70,000 "Submission of the Night" bonus.

Horn is on a two fight skid since returning to the promotion, losing to Dean Lister and Nate Marquardt, respectively, via submission (guillotine chokes), which does not bode well for “Gumby” against a beast like Palhares.

In fact, Horn has won just two of his last six fights. He was supposed to return against Wilson Gouveia at UFC Fight Night 15 on September 17 before an injury forced him off the card.

Regardless, Horn — a 103-fight mixed martial arts veteran — is a legend in the sport at just 32-years-old, meaning that he has the ability to win a fight every time he competes. But it's not going to be easy — Palhares is very well-versed in submissions and is extremely powerful

UFC 93 will feature two of the world's most elite 205-pound fighters, Rich "Ace" Franklin (24-3) and Dan "Hollywood" Henderson (23-7), duking it out in the main event. And Brazilian powerhouse Mauricio "Shogun" Rua will return and look to get back in the win column as he takes on UFC pioneer Mark "The Hammer" Coleman.

UFC 91 PPV buys for ‘Couture vs Lesnar’ appear ‘big’

Posted: 26 Nov 2008 05:04 PM CST

It was billed as the “biggest fight in UFC history,” but if pay-per-view (PPV) buys are the barometer for success then UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15 appears to have come up a bit short.

Slightly.

Dave Meltzer from WrestlingObserver.com reports:

“Based on numbers we've gotten, there are places where it was just slightly below UFC 66 (the record setter which did 1,050,000 buys) and it looks to have beaten UFC 61 (Shamrock vs. Ortiz, 775,000) for second place. It looks to be No. 3 in Canada behind UFC 79 (Silva vs. Liddell; St. Pierre vs. Hughes) and UFC 83 (St. Pierre vs. Serra) but ahead of St. Pierre vs. Fitch and Lesnar vs. Herring in August. That would indicate most likely topping 800,000 buys.”

While it will likely fall short of UFC President Dana White’s pre-event prediction of a record-setting 1.2 million buys, UFC 91 should be considered a big win for the promotion — especially when you consider the current state of the economy.

It also clearly indicates that new UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar is a massive box office draw, bringing in a whole new legion of interested of viewers thanks in large part to his days as a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar not too long ago.

UFC 91 sold 10,845 tickets for a live gate $4,815,675, according to The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) . The promotion dished out $1,118,000 in UFC 91 fighter salaries for the pay-per-view (PPV) event, as well as $240,000 in additional bonus money for four participants who delivered outstanding performances.

Lesnar defeated Randy Couture via second round technical knockout to capture the heavyweight crown in the UFC 91 main event. Kenny Florian toppled Joe Stevenson with a first round submission in the co-featured bout of the evening, reinforcing his position as the clearcut number one title contender in the 155-pound division.

In fact, UFC President Dana White guaranteed Florian a title shot against lightweight champion BJ Penn in the near future.

Programming reminder: TUF on turkey hiatus until Dec. 3

Posted: 26 Nov 2008 02:22 PM CST

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 8 is taking the week off for Thanksgiving and will not air a new episode in tonight’s usual spot at 10pm ET on SpikeTV.

If you can’t live without your weekly dose of splushi and human lemonade, I’m happy to report that you can still catch the past four episodes tonight at 8pm ET starting with Episode 7: ‘Body Bag’.

Be sure to tune in the following Wednesday, December 3, to catch all four of the semifinal match-ups when episodes 11 and 12 are shown back-to-back.

Not only do we get to see some semifinal butt-kicking, but also the final meltdown of lightweight Junie Browning and the consequences that follow it.

The semifinal matches are (in order):

Ryan Bader vs. Eliot Marshall (LHW)

Phillipe Nover vs. George Roop (LW)

Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Vinny Magalhaes (LHW)

Junie Browning vs. Efrain Escudero (LW)

From a fan's perspective, the semifinals look to be very exciting fights. Aside from perhaps Nover vs. Roop, I can see all of the fights going in either direction. The winners in each respective weight class will face off at The Ultimate Fighter live finale on December 13.

Who gets past the semis and who goes home?  Will Junie survive another episode? Find out all this and more at the conclusion of Season 8 on December 3.

See you then!

Josh Barnett vs Brett Rogers Affliction fight rumored for Jan. 24

Posted: 26 Nov 2008 01:38 PM CST

Another huge heavyweight fight is being discussed and could officially be added to the Affliction: “Day of Reckoning” event, which is slated for the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on January 24, within the next few days.

Former Elite XC standout Brett “The Grim” Rogers (8-0) could be the next opponent to face off against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh “The Babyface Assassin” Barnett (23-5), according to a FiveOuncesOfPain.com report.

Barnett is coming off a one punch, highlight reel-type knockout over Pedro Rizzo at the first Affliction event back in July. Before that he competed twice in Japan on Sengoku cards against Hidehiko Yoshida and Jeff Monson. “The Babyface Assassin” was victorious in both bouts with a third round submission (heel hook) and a unanimous decision, respectively.

The former Pride FC star will look to make it four in a row against a fast rising, yet still unproven star in Brett Rogers.

“Grim” is one of many fighters still caught up in the Pro Elite fighter contracts fiasco. Like most of the ex-Elite XC stars, his contract status is still in limbo following the demise of the promotion last month.

During his eight-fight career he’s never been taken out of the first round and has stopped each of his opponents with strikes. However, names like Jon Murphy, James Thompson and Ralph Kelly are nowhere near the skill level of a guy like Barnett.

This is a massive step up in competition for Rogers. And his all around game will certainly be put to the test on January 24.

He’ll likely come in as an under dog, but “Grim” is always one punch away from ending a fight. Without question, Rogers will have to bring his “A” game to the Honda Center to have a chance to win this one … but so, too, will Barnett.

Rogers is not going to be an easy fight for anybody.

The Affliction guys deserve some credit for rescuing Rogers from MMA purgatory if the bout comes to fruition. Nobody wants to see these ex-Pro Elite fighters on the sidelines anymore, especially exciting fighters like Brett Rogers. Kudos to them for getting this guy back in action.

“Day of Reckoning” will air live on pay-per-view (PPV) on fight night beginning at 9 p.m. ET. HDNet will also air some of the under card matches before the main card broadcast on PPV.

Antonio “Rogerio” Nogueira and Vladimir Matyushenko will square off in the featured fight of the HDNet portion of the card while WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski square off in the highly anticipated main event.

Dan Hardy vs Rory Markham UFC 95 fight rumored for London show

Posted: 26 Nov 2008 10:33 AM CST

An explosive match up between heavy-handed welterweights Dan Hardy (20–6) and Rory Markham (16-4) is in the works for UFC 95 from the O2 Arena in London, England, on February 21, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Hardy lived up to his billing as the top British 170-pound prospect in his Octagon debut with a hard-fought split decision win over the crafty Akihiro Gono at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" last month.

With the win, "The Outlaw" kept his red hot win streak intact, taking nine of his last 10 fights. And the lone loss during that span was because of a disqualification. It won't get any easier, however, for the former Cage Warriors welterweight champion … he has essentially been thrown into the deep end in a very deep division right off the bat.

Markham is a super tough competitor who has also been on a tear of his own of late. The former International Fight League (IFL) welterweight standout continued that success within the eight-sided cage, kicking off his UFC career with a bang … literally.

He nearly decapitated Brodie Farber at UFC Fight Night 14 back in July, earning "Knockout of the Night" honors for the scary finish. It has to rank among the best knockouts of the 2008 fight campaign.

But that's Markham's MO — the Miletich-trained fighter has never gone the distance in 20 professional fights — win or lose — since his pro debut back in 2003. He comes to scrap and leaves it all on the table … just ask notable opponents such as Mike Pyle, Brad Blackburn and, of course, Mr. Farber.

For more on UFC 95, which could feature middleweight champion Anderson Silva in a light heavyweight main event special attraction, click here.
