Vadim Finkelchtein: 'There are no talks with the UFC whatsoever'

Props: M-1 Global

Quoteworthy:

"Today I heard the rumors of me allegedly stating on my twitter account that we are negotiating with the UFC. I want to state that there are no talks with the UFC whatsoever. Our partner in the USA is STRIKEFORCE, we are happy to cooperate with STRIKEFORCE. Fedor (Emelianenko) and Gegard (Mousasi) fight there and they are quite happy with the conditions and how they are treated with respect there. Finally, I don’t have any account on Twitter. The account that ignited the rumors is false. Our attorneys are already aware of the situation and shortly this fake account will be deleted."

Co-owner and President of M-1 Global Vadim Finkelchtein today made a statement through M-1 Global shooting down erroneous Internet reports that claimed the MMA Czar had reopened negotiations with the UFC. Unfortunately the Twitter account used to give life to the rumors was later discovered to be fake and Finky reaffirms the relationship between Strikeforce and his top stars Fedor Emelianenko and Gegard Mousasi. M-1 has been out of the Dana White business since talks between the two sides broke down in August 2009, prompting the Russians to join the party in San Jose. Was it a good decision? That all depends on who you ask. What say you?

Former WEC Champ Mike Thomas Brown Inks New Five Fight Deal

Posted: 04 Jan 2010 06:21 PM PST

Mike_brown_medium

Former WEC featherweight champion Mike Thomas Brown recently inked a new five fight contract to remain with the organization for the foreseeable future.

The 34-year-old American Top Team product is coming off his first loss in nearly four years at the hands of the young Brazilian striker Jose Aldo.

Aldo’s dominating performance at WEC 44 earned him the belt that Brown laid claim to for just over a calendar year.

He will waste little time in his quest to right the ship and find his way back to the top of the 145-pound heap once again. Brown is scheduled to step back into the cage against newcomer Anthony Morrison on January 10 at the WEC 46 event in Sacramento, CA.

UFC 108 medical suspensions and injuries for 'Evans vs Silva'

Posted: 04 Jan 2010 05:44 PM PST

Ouch

Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva," which took place on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

With several of the bouts ending early (and viciously), there were a handful of fighters who were flagged follow up visits with their doctors.

Chief among them are Dustin Hazelett (right orbital blowout/nasal fracture) — who was welcomed back after several months with several unanswered Paul Daley knuckle sandwiches  — and Mark Munoz (right hand/wrist) -- who may have busted something beating Ryan Jensen literally into verbal submission.

But that's not all.

Here is the complete list of UFC 108 injuries and their medical instructions:

  • Dustin Hazelett: Suspended until July 2, 2010, for right orbital blowout/nasal fracture unless physician clears him to return sooner; No contest until at least March 4, 2010, and no contact until Feb. 2, 2010.
  • Sam Stout: Suspended until Feb. 2, 2010, and no contact until Jan. 23, 2010, for a left forehead laceration.
  • Gilbert Yvel: Suspended until Feb. 2, 2010, and no contact until Jan. 23, 2010.
  • Jacob Volkmann: Suspended until Feb. 2, 2010, and no contact until Jan. 23, 2010.
  • Mark Munoz: Suspended until July 2, 2010, for right hand/wrist/elbow injury unless physician clears him to return sooner.
  • Ryan Jensen: Suspended until Jan. 23, 2010, and no contact until Jan. 16, 2010.
  • Mike Pyle: Suspended until Feb. 2, 2010, and no contact until Jan. 23, 2010.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Strikeforce's Kevin Casey Shoots for a Single, Yo!

Posted: 04 Jan 2010 12:37 PM PST

Spencer_pratt_works_on_his_career_medium

As of Dec. 29, 2009, you can now purchase the rap single "No Surrender No Retreat" by Strikeforce mixed martial arts fighter, Kevin Casey, on ITunes.

The song is just a couple of mouse clicks and $0.99 in change away from your IPod playlist if you are so inclined.

"King" made his Strikeforce debut in the middleweight division at the Challenger Series 5 event in Kansas City, KS back in November 2009.

His walkout music for the event was, you guessed it, "No Surrender No Retreat" by Kevin Casey.

The Rickson Gracie disciple certainly did not disappoint in his debut. He submitted Chad Vance via first round rear naked choke to move his professional record to 3 – 1 overall and 1 – 0 in Strikeforce.

Ironically, neither fighting nor rapping has garnered him the most attention to date. He is best known for being managed by reality TV star Spencer Pratt, who has acquired his fame on shows such as MTV’s The Hills and NBC’s I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!

Pratt was cageside in Kansas City to see his client’s hand raised in his Strikeforce debut. You can also find him in the background of the "No Surrender No Retreat" music video seen here.

Look for Casey on an upcoming Strikeforce card.

Pratt, on the other hand, can be seen parading around your television on what seems like a nightly basis.

Ken Shamrock vs Seth Petruzelli set for IUF: 'The Return of Buluc' on March 6 in Cancun

Posted: 04 Jan 2010 12:03 PM PST

Shammy-attacks_medium
In case any of you fight fans were wondering where "Buluc" was, he's apparently set to return on March 6 to the International Unlimited Fighting (IUF) organization on the same card that will feature Ken Shamrock taking on Seth Petruzelli in Cancun, Mexico.

Shamrock (27-13-2) hasn't been heard from since failing the world's most dangerous drug test back in early 2009. The UFC Hall of Famer was popped for anabolic steroids — Norandrosterone, Noretiocholanolone and Stanozolol following his first round armbar submission win over the late Ross Clifton at War Gods: "Valentine’s Eve Massacre" last February.

Shammy was fined $2,500 and suspended one year for the transgression.

The steroid bust marred the first win in four years for "The World’s Most Dangerous Man." In addition, it  threw a wrench into his planned fight against former WWE superstar turned MMA fighter, Bobby Lashley, in the Roy Jones Jr.-promoted hybrid MMA and boxing event "March Badness" from the Pensacola Civic Center in Pensacola.

It was yet another big money match down the tubes for the Lion's Den founder.

That's because Shamrock was supposed to collide with former YouTube brawler Kimbo Slice at Elite XC: "Heat" in October 2008. However, Shamrock pulled out of that scheduled match with Slice on fight night because of a cut sustained in warm-ups and has since been accused by younger brother Frank of cutting himself to get out of the fight.

To put it short, the first-ever King of Pancrase and UFC Superfight Champion is now nothing more than a punchline within the mixed martial arts community.

How fitting then, that his next opponent would be Seth Petruzelli (11-4). Since ending the charade known as Elite XC by knocking out promotion star Kimbo Slice with a fade-away marshmallow jab, "The Silverback" has only competed once, stopping a mediocre Chris Baten at Art of Fighting 4 this past August.

After leaving the Octagon following back-to-back losses to Matt Hamill and Wilson Gouveia, Petruzelli teased at a UFC return back in September before recently blowing up his Twitter account about a "huge fight contract."

I guess by "huge" he means fighting a geriatric steroid user in a country that doesn't provide drinkable tap water.

War Montezuma!

Petruzelli indicates that his fight with Shamrock will be available live via pay-per-view. As with any freak show (Sylvia vs. Mercer, Maynard vs. Fry) there are bound to be a percentage of fight fans willing to pay for the chance to see it.

If nothing else, Hoelzer Reich may have finally found two fighters desperate enough to accept their sponsorship.

Dana White: This is the week that determines Brock Lesnar's fate

Posted: 04 Jan 2010 07:47 AM PST

Lesnar-out_medium

Props: TSN.com

Quoteworthy:

"This is the week. This is the week Brock Lesnar is going back to the doctor, getting fully checked out by one of the best doctors and hospitals in the world. If the doctors say things are going well and things are going in the right direction, then maybe we're a few months away from him coming back. If it's not, and not going in the right direction, he'll either be done and have to retire or he'll be out for a couple of years. So hopefully we get good news. And then after we get that announcement, then we'll be able to plan what we're going to do with the heavyweight division."

UFC President Dana White prepares to get the skinny on his ailing heavyweight champion as the doctor's decide just how well Brock Lesnar is doing following his surgery to repair damage inflicted by intestinal diverticulitis. The promotion recently announced that number one contender Shane Carwin will battle former champion Frank Mir at UFC 111 in Lesnar's absence and we may finally know by the end of this week if that bout will be contested for an interim title or the true title -- if the Minnesotan is forced to surrender the belt in anticipation of a long (or permanent) absence. In a perfect world, Lesnar would get fully cleared by his doctor and make his return in Boston on August 28 against the winner of Mir vs. Carwin or Nogueira vs. Velasquez. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Monday Morning Scrap: UFC 108 and FieLDS Dynamite!! week in review

Posted: 04 Jan 2010 07:27 AM PST

Mms-jan4_medium
Fans of mixed martial arts were once again treated to an action-packed week chock full of fights thanks to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Fighting and Entertainment Group (FEG) putting forth a bevy of top stars in the heat of battle for their year end conclusions to the 2009 fight campaign.

UFC 108: "Evans vs Silva" went down last Saturday night (Jan. 2) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and featured a main event of Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva for another shot at light heavyweight contendership. Welterweight stalwart Paul Daley answered the call of grappling guru Dustin Hazelett in the night's co-main event.

When the smoke cleared, was anyone really that upset about having Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva as headliners?

Also blowing up the MMA boards was the marathon event from the Saitama Super Arena as FieLDS Dynamite!! brought K-1, DREAM and Sengoku all under one roof for Japanese bragging rights.

There were plenty of highlights and fantastic finishes but the major angle continues to be Shinya Aoki's bone-crunching submission win over Mizuto Hirota and his controversial post-fight antics.

In cased you missed any or all of it — or just want to keep the discussion alive — below are links to all the major storylines coming out of these events.

UFC Quick Quote: Takanori Gomi wants to end his career on the biggest stage in the world

Posted: 04 Jan 2010 06:00 AM PST

Gomi-punching_medium

"I didn't want to end my career without fighting on the biggest stage in the world. I welcome any challenge that ignites me. My challenge right now is to become the UFC champion. Honestly, I have reached the age at which I hit my physical peak. My training at American Kickboxing Academy has has served as a great motivation to transform my career. Needless to say, BJ Penn is a high caliber fighter, but so is everyone else in UFC. There is much to learn from BJ's fighting spirit. To tell you the truth, he is a fighter whom I am aiming for. My immediate goal is to establish myself as a UFC fighter and continue fighting in front of the American fans. At this age, I have to train harder than ever. As long as I manage to do so, I just need to look up and continue my ascent. I want to fight at age 60, just like Eikichi Yazawwa (Japanese rock n' roll demigod). The only qualm I have about fighting in America is that my mom will grouse about not being able to come to my fights. Younger fighters will vitalize MMA in Japan -- like Satoshi Ishii. I want to enthrall the fans the world over. They can picture Manny Pacquiao. I will constantly storm ahead with a flurry of strikes."

In a recent interview with UFC.com, former PRIDE lightweight champion, Takanori Gomi voices his ambition in the wake of his recent signing with UFC. Questions linger as to whether he can restore the same winning ways that had catapulted him to the top of the lightweight hierarchy in PRIDE, Nonetheless, the new challenge that awaits him in UFC's stacked lightweight division, as well as his recent training at American Kickboxing, may provide the much-needed fuel to set the smoldering "Fireball Kid" ablaze.
