DREAM press conference notes: Korean debut, tournaments, Aoki-Kawajiri title bout, and more

Dream-generic-2_medium

Fighting and Entertainment Group (FEG) held a press conference on Thursday, January 28th to unveil the plan it has in store for DREAM in 2010.

The inaugural event of the year, DREAM 13, will take place at Yokohama Arena in Yokohama on Monday, March 22. DREAM has confirmed the previously rumored featherweight title bout in which the reigning champion, Bibiano Fernande, will welcome perennial Top 10 lightweight, Joachim Hansen, to the new weight class.

DREAM 13 fight card will also host the promotional debut of Pride and UFC veteran, Ryo Chonan. Chonan, a former DEEP middleweight champion, garnered recognition as one of the staple fighters in Pride's "Bushido" events. He joined UFC in the wake of Pride's dissolution but had a checkered run in the Octagon where he went 1-3 with losses to Karo Parisyan, Brad Blackburn, and TJ Grant.

He returned to his former stomping ground of DEEP in August last year and emerged victorious over fellow Pride veteran, Jutaro Nakao.

DREAM has yet to nominate Chonan's upcoming opponent. Also slated for the DREAM 13 fight card are Katsunori Kikuno, Hideo Tokoro, Minowaman, Mariusz Zaromskis, Eddie Alvarez, and Andrews Nakahara.

As for the time table for future DREAM events, DREAM event producer, Keiichi Sasahara revealed that, following DREAM 13, there are a total of six events scheduled for the year, in April, May, July, September, October, and December. The April event likely will see DREAM makes its debut in South Korea.

Sasahara explained that, depending on the performance of the inaugural event in Korea, DREAM may return later in the year, possibly in October. Also, there has been talks about holding events in Taiwan and Macau as part of DREAM's nascent effort to expand its brand overseas.

In keeping with the previous statement to utilize its "white cage" once a year, DREAM will hold the second installment of the caged fight card in 2010. Sasahara stated that DREAM's first foray with the hexagonal cage at DREAM 12 was met with surprisingly positive reviews from the fighters and fans.

Also, it looks like 2010 will be the year that DREAM will crown champions in every weight class from featherweight to heavyweight. A light heavyweight tournament featuring the Strikeforce champion, Gegard Mousasi, is expected to kick off in May with eight or sixteen participants. A middleweight tourney is also on tap to fill the throne vacated by Mousasi. On the other hand, a heavyweight title will be crowned in a title bout between two opponents handpicked by DREAM: Sasahara hinted strongly that Alistair Overeem will be one of the contenders.

Building upon the formal alliance with Strikeforce and momentum generated by the cross-promotional bout series with SRC at the Dynamite!! 2009, Sasahara spoke about the plan to foster collaboration with other organizations. Though no specific detail was divulged, a plan to pit DREAM fighters against fighters from other organizations is in the works: Sasahara mentioned Strikeforce mainstays, Gilbert Melendez, Josh Thomson, and Robbie Lawler as some of the fighters he would like to court for appearance in DREAM.

Elsewhere, the much-anticipated DREAM lightweight title bout between the reigning champion, Shinya Aoki, and top contender, Tatsuya Kawajiri, will not happen until May or July. Initially scheduled for Dynamite!! 2009, Aoki-Kawajiri has been postponed due to the fighters' participation in the "DREAM vs. SRC" cross-promotional bouts. Aoki triumphed with the infamous arm-breaking submission of SRC lightweight champion, Mizuto Hirota, while Kawajiri grinded out a workman-like decision victory over Kazunori Yokota. Kawajiri apparently has sustained an injury in the bout against Yokota, and the time table for the title match will thus be impacted by his recovery.

Stay tuned to MMAmania for more information regarding the upcoming DREAM 13 fight card.

UFC 115: Pat Barry vs Gilbert Yvel in the works for June 12

Barry_yvel_medium

Hard-hitting heavyweights Pat Barry and Gilbert Yvel will likely collide at UFC 115 from the General Motors Place in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, on June 12, according to the Las Vegas Sun.

Barry was last seen stopping Dutch kickboxer Antoni Hardonk back at UFC 104 in Oct. 2009. Yvel, meanwhile, was stopped with a crushing left hook courtesy of Junior dos Santos at UFC 108 earlier this year.

Don't blink -- it could be a painfully quick one to watch! More on this breaking news in a bit.

UFC 115 is expected to feature the third (and hopefully final ) dance between former light heavyweight champions Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, fresh off their coaching gigs at The Ultimate Fighter 11.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for future updates on this still-developing fight card.

Randy Couture knows he has an advantage over Mark Coleman when it comes to conditioning

Quoteworthy:

"He doesn't throw a lot of combinations, but he's a very powerful guy. If you stand around in front of him he's gonna try and hit you with some good hooks and overhand rights. He's gonna follow those with a straight double leg. Knowing what you're looking for there and being ready for that is a big key. The more times you can stuff Mark and keep him from taking you down or make him work real hard to take you down is gonna pay dividends on the conditioning side of things even in a three round fight. He's shown that's a potential weakness for him and that he's not always in shape to keep a high paced fight. I think there's some things there. I've always been one to do some worst-case scenario training. A guy like Mark Coleman takes you down and plants himself on top of ya, you have to be able to deal with that and be able to survive those situations. I've spent a lot of time working on the bottom and working on creating some situations where I think I can be effective and make it hard on Mark."

Randy Couture shares his opinion on people's criticism of his bout with Mark Coleman at UFC 109, which features two former UFC champions who happen to both be over the age of 40. "The Natural" also goes into detail about what he feels he needs to get done against Coleman in order to walk away victorious. Along with essentially everyone else who has an opinion on this fight, Couture thinks his main advantage lies in the conditioning aspect of the game. What other advantages does Couture hold over Coleman? Is "The Hammer" better than Randy at anything? What say you, Maniacs?

Strike first, strike hard: MMAmania.com Strikeforce 'Miami' interview exclusive with Robbie Lawler

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 11:50 AM PST

Lawlwerintr_medium

Robbie Lawler has a firm seat at the drawing board after sustaining a loss this past June to current Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields. It was a disappointing evening for "Ruthless," who got caught in a deep guillotine choke and forced to tap very early into the first round. It was his first taste of defeat since September 2006.

Needless to say, he's been anxious to return to action.

Lawler, who has won fifteen of his eighteen professional fights by way of knockout, will take on a man in "Marvelous" Melvin Manhoef, who has twenty three knockouts in twenty four career victories.

In other words, it should be fun while it lasts.

In addition to Manhoef, Lawler took some time out to discuss his disappointing loss to Jake Shields, getting pulled from the December Strikeforce card, Herschel Walker, and his beloved San Diego Chargers.

Check it out:

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): I haven't talked to you since right before your fight with Jake Shields. That night it looked like it was turning into the type of fight that you would have wanted. You shrugged off a takedown or two or his and you had him standing. Did you feel like things were going as planned prior to the submission?

Robbie Lawler: I think I was doing real well and it was just going to be a matter of time, but I made a mistake and he took advantage of it.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): I know you weren't too thrilled about the 182 lb. catchweight going into that fight. Did that work out okay for you in the end? Would you ever agree to something like that again?

Robbie Lawler: I don't really know at this time what I think about that. At the time I wasn't very happy.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): If you did it next time you would probably want to agree on it up front instead of after the fact, correct?

Robbie Lawler: Yeah, probably.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): You were supposed to come back and fight Benji Radach on the December Strikeforce card. Then it was Trevor Prangley who pulled out with an injury at the last minute. Can you describe for me what those few weeks leading up to the event were like for you?

Robbie Lawler: I was just getting ready for a fight. I knew there were two possible opponents for about 4-5 weeks. As the fight got closer it became another guy. Then about two weeks before the fight they found out he couldn't fight and it was going to be Trevor Prangley. I'm like, "Okay, I'll take that fight." The Monday before I headed out he got hurt, obviously.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Then you ended up flying to San Jose for the event anyways.

Robbie Lawler: When I actually found out about it I was on my way to the airport.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Did they compensate you for the fight even though it did not take place?

Robbie Lawler: They did to a certain extent. I can't really go into the details.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Do you feel like you have had enough time to prepare for Melvin Manhoef?

Robbie Lawler: I mean, I've been training full time and just training hard. It is what it is. I'm fighting in a week so let's get it done.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Are you a guy that likes to watch tape on your opponent?

Robbie Lawler: My coaches have been watching. I watched a few fights. I watch some. At the beginning of my career I did not, but now I watch a little bit.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Manhoef is a recent signee by Strikeforce. They've also gone out and gotten guys like Dan Henderson, Muhammad Lawal, etc... What are your thoughts on some of their recent signings and the direction the company is going in as a whole?

Robbie Lawler: I think as far as the signings go there are a bunch of tough guys. They are really top notch fighters, especially at 185 pounds. Other than that I think they are doing well signing guys.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): What are your thoughts about a guy like Herschel Walker getting into the sport of MMA and being signed by Strikeforce?

Robbie Lawler: Well, I don't really know. Herschel Walker is a really nice guy. I had a chance to talk to him for a really quick second. Should he on the main card? I know he's a main card draw, but it's just weird that a guy who hasn't ever fought in MMA would hop in at this level.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Do you think it would be more appropriate if he was on the undercard or maybe on a Strikeforce Challengers card?

Robbie Lawler: Yeah, I think so, but I'm not the one calling the shots. Maybe he'll prove otherwise.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Back to Manhoef. He has been fighting overseas basically his whole career. A lot of mainstream fans in the US aren't that familiar with him. How would you describe his style to them?

Robbie Lawler: Really good kickboxing. Good hands. He's a K-1 guy. Knockout power.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Because he has that aggressive style and likes to stand and trade is he a guy you especially look forward to fighting as opposed to a grappler like Jake Shields, or it a fight a fight in your eyes?

Robbie Lawler: I don't really try to look at matchups so much. A fight is a fight. He's good at what he does and I have to look for weaknesses and take advantage of certain situations. Hopefully I get him before he gets me.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Assuming you come away from this fight in good health would you hope to be apart of the April show on CBS?

Robbie Lawler: I would like to fight in April. (Matt) Hughes has a fight I'll be going out to and I don't know how close that is to his fight. It's definitely something I'd like to do, get on the CBS card. I tried to get on the last CBS card.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): You and Hughes are synonymous with the H.I.T. Squad gym in Granite City, IL, but over the past few months some of your other teammates like Matt Veach and Brian Foster have been getting their shot on the big stage. What is it like for you to see those guys find success?

Robbie Lawler: It's good. They're good fighters. They're tough kids. They're taking advantage of their opportunities.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): I heard you are a big football guy. What team do you follow?

Robbie Lawler: Well I was following the Chargers, but ... That's my team and they lost so I'm just watching now.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): So their game with the New York Jets was probably hard to watch for you.

Robbie Lawler: Yep.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): They just re-signed their head coach Norv Turner for three years. Is that a good decision in your eyes or not?

Robbie Lawler: I liked Marty (Schottenheimer). I believe they ran the ball and they were a more physical team. I think their offense is capable of putting up a lot of points but they're just not as physical and with time off they don't come back as fresh. I think if they play week in and week out they are going to progress but I think time off killed them. Maybe it was bad coaching, maybe bad preparation. I don't know.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Would you bring back LaDainian Tomlinson for another year?

Robbie Lawler: I think you have to. He just turned 30. There are guys out there who are putting up good stats at 30 like Thomas Jones, who is a really good running back. They are not an offense that runs the ball much. They are more of a pass first team, which is fine, but I feel like when they run the ball the whole stadium knows they're running the ball. They've got at least one tight end and a good fullback, why not spread them out and pass? Or spread them out and run? You don't have to line up letting everyone know you're going to run.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Finally, who do you think will win the Super Bowl trophy?

Robbie Lawler: I'm going with the NFC and I'm hoping for the Vikings.*

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Any sponsors you would like to thank before we go?

Robbie Lawler: I would like to thank Toyo Tires and Tapout.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Appreciate the time Robbie. We'll do it again soon.

Robbie Lawler: Okay, thanks.

* Interview was completed just prior to the NFC championship game.

Lavar Johnson cheats death to return to MMA at Strikeforce 'Challengers' on March 26 in Fresno

Lavar-johnson_medium
NEW YORK (Jan. 28, 2010)-Six months ago, Lavar Johnson lay in a hospital bed, clinging to his life after he was gunned down while attending a family barbeque during the July 4 holiday.

On Friday, March 26, the 32-year-old will enter a new chapter in his incredible recovery when he restarts his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career in the main event of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers fight card at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California on Friday, March 26.

The heavy-handed Johnson (13-3), a 6-foot-4 inch, 250-pound resident of nearby Madera, will face off with another highly touted prospect, undefeated Lolohea Mahe (4-0-1) of Wailua, Maui in the STRIKEFORCE cage.

Tickets for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event, priced from $30, go on sale on Monday, Feb. 1, at the Save Mart Center box office and select Save Mart Supermarkets, all Ticketmaster locations (800) 745-3000, Ticketmaster online and STRIKEFORCE's official website.

"My health is great and I'm almost back to where I was," said Johnson. In his last start in the cage, Johnson crushed Carl Seumanutafa in just 18 seconds with a single punch at the first-ever STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Save Mart Center on May 15, 2009.

After being struck down by the gunfire that also led to the death of a cousin, Johnson, a father of two boys, ages eight and five, spent one month in hospital care and lost approximately 60 pounds.

Months of physical rehabilitation followed and, one month ago, Johnson was cleared by a physician to return to training with trainer Jasper Tayaba and Team Buhawe in Fresno.

"(The experience) made me realize how fragile life is and that every day I'm here is a blessing. It has also made me take MMA more seriously."

In other action on the STRIKEFORCE Challengers card, "Abongo" Humphrey (5-1) of Atlanta, Ga., will square off with George Bush III (5-1) of Columbus, Ohio, at light heavyweight (205 pounds).

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Luke Stewart (6-2) of San Francisco, California will make his long-awaited return to action against Andre Galvao (3-1) of Brazil in a welterweight (170 pounds) contest.

Unbeaten Zoila Frausto (2-0) of Fresno will face off at 135 pounds with another one of the top prospects in the women's field, Miesha "Takedown" Tate (7-2) of Olympia, Washington.

American Kickboxing Academy bred wrestling stud Justin "The Silverback" Wilcox (8-3) of San Jose, Calif., will do battle with Bryan Travers (13-1) of Bakersfield, Calif., at lightweight (155 pounds).

Save Mart Center doors will open for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at 6 p.m. PT. The first live, non-televised, preliminary bout will begin at 6:45 p.m.

The live SHOWTIME® telecast will begin at 11:45 p.m. ET/ PT (delayed on the west coast).

Strikeforce Miami: Will Marius Zaromskis look for the high kick against the 'long arms' of Nick Diaz?

Quoteworthy:

"Always I'm looking for high kick but sometimes happens, sometimes not.  I'm very happy to finish a fight with a high kick ... sometimes (it's) difficult because if opponent waiting for high kick it's very difficult to land it.  If he's not waiting, it's much easier. It's going to be a good fight because he's a strong guy.  It will be a nice fight - nice and hard fight.  Also it's more difficult for me because he's tall and have long arms.  (I'll have to) Try to find my space ... You never know with fights.  You never know what's happen in a fight.  It can be 25 minutes.  It can be one round or it can be five rounds, you never know."

Recent Strikeforce acquisition Marius Zaromskis talks about meeting Nick Diaz in his promotion debut at the "Miami" event on Saturday, Jan. 30 in Sunrise, FL. The "Whitemare" is coming off a first round mutilation of Myeon Ho Bae at DREAM 12 back on Oct. 25 -- the third consecutive time the Lithuanian won a fight with a head kick in the opening round. He also clowned Jason High and the heavily-favored Hayoto Sakurai to finish his stellar run in the July 20 conclusion to the DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix. Can he continue his path of destruction against the foul-mouthed fightmonger? Or will the "long arms" and stellar submission game of Diaz give him a rude welcome? This one is going to be fireworks -- don't blink.

Bryan Caraway vs Fredson Paixao added to WEC 47 prelims

Paixao_medium

World Extreme Cagefighting's (WEC) March 6 card is coming close to completion, as Bryan Caraway and Fredson Paixio will meet on the preliminary card of WEC 47 in Columbus, Ohio, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Caraway is coming off a submission loss in his WEC debut against Mark Hominick at WEC 46: "Varner vs. Henderson". The loss snapped a three fight win-streak which included two first round stoppages and a unanimous decision victory.

Paixao's short stint in the WEC has left him without much to be happy about. After dropping a unanimous decision to jiu-jitsu ace Wagnney Fabiano at WEC 40, Paixao lost via split-decision to Cole Province, but the result was turned into a No Contest after Province tested positive for a banned substance.

However, regardless of the change to No Contest, Paixao is still seeking his first win with the promotion, as he has failed to achieve victory twice. The submission ace will certainly be looking at this fight as an opportunity to take a big step forward, while gaining some job security with the promotion.

WEC 47 is set for Columbus, Ohio on March 6. The card is headlined by a bantamweight championship bout between champion Brian Bowles and challenger Dominick Cruz. The card also features the return of two of mixed martial arts' all time greats, as Miguel Torres and Jens Pulver look to get back to their winning ways.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for breaking news and updates surrounding the WEC's March card.

WEC Quick Quote: Jens Pulver can still compete if he stops being dumb

Jens-pulver-hat_medium

"This fight is very important man. I can't lose 5 fights in a row, come on. It can't happen, so this fight means a lot man. I feel like I have been losing because I was dumb, you know what I'm saying? I'm just getting caught in dumb stuff. even in the first fight with Urijah, don't get me wrong, he is fast, but I made his hands look faster because I fought dumb. But I want to show everyone that I can still fight and that I can still compete."

Former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver (22-12) tells FightHype.com that he's looking to reverse a string of horrific losses by downing Javier Vazquez (13-4) at WEC 47: "Bowles vs. Cruz" from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 6. "Lil' Evil" is at a crossroads in his career, having lost six of his last seven fights and going virtually winless (1-4) in the WEC. In fact, this fight may be Pulver's last chance at redemption in a sport he once dominated. Is he done? Or starting the greatest comeback in mixed martial arts history?

Ed Soares: Junior dos Santos is drinking milk and kicking ass

"We're in no hurry for a title shot. He's only 25 years old, so he's still a growing kid. Every time I see him he seems like he's a little bigger. He's drinking his milk and just getting bigger and stronger. I think we'd like to see Rodrigo beat Cain (Velasquez) and have that title shot, but whatever the UFC decides is fine with us. They've given us some great fights, some incredible opportunities, and we're just going to take whatever they give us. We never pick our opponents, so whoever they put in front of us, we'll take with a smile on our face."

Manager extraordinaire Ed Soares talks about the future of his bright young star, Junior dos Santos, who rose to power with a first round shellacking of Fabricio Werdum at UFC 90 way back in October 2008. Since then, "Cigano" has been unstoppable, putting the Brazilian stamp of disapproval on Stefan Struve, Mirko Filipovic and Gilbert Yvel. Now perhaps the last thing that stands between him and a shot at heavyweight gold is a hulking Goliath named Gabriel Gonzaga, who awaits his fellow countryman at UFC on Versus 1 in Colorado. Will "Napao" trade places with dos Santos on the list of 2010 title contenders on March 21?

Nate Marquardt recognized as a 'True Warrior' for his fight against Alzheimer's Disease

UFC Middleweight contender Nate "The Great" Marquardt was recently voted 2009-2010 "True Warrior" in a public vote held by the Sharon Antcliff Foundation for his efforts in supporting the fight against Early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

From sharonantclifffoundation.org:

When Nate was named as the winner of the Tequilla Cazadores Spirit Award before his fight at UFC 102, he named SAF as the recipient of a $1,000 grant on his behalf. To date, that is still our largest single donation received. Nate's involvement has also allowed us to gain access we otherwise may not have had to the mixed martial arts community. There, SAF has found dozens of others willing to help us spread our message, seek donations, seek volunteers, and build relationships. Perhaps most importantly, Nate is doing this all for us without asking for a thing in return.
