Bobby Lashley vs Wes Sims confirmed for Strikeforce: 'Miami'

It wasn't easy, but Strikeforce today confirmed that is has finally found an opponent for former WWE star and collegiate wrestling champion Bobby Lashley (4-0):

Three-fight UFC veteran and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 alum, Wes Sims.

The announcement comes with little more than one week until Strikeforce: "Miami" is set to go down from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida on Saturday, Jan. 30.

Yohan Banks was originally expected to take on Lashley; however, the Florida Boxing Commission rejected him as a worthy opponent. Mixed martial arts journeyman, Jimmy Ambriz, was later approved by the commission, but Strikeforce apparently wanted to go in a different direction.

Enter "A Whole Show."

Sims is the prototypical journeyman fighter, having competed under the IFL, K-1 and UFC banners, among others. This, however, will mark his Strikeforce debut.

Besides his bizarre episodes with former UFC Heavyweight champ Frank Mir, Sims is probably best known for his recent appearance on TUF 10. On the show, Sims surprisingly lost his first fight to the comparatively inexperienced  Justin Wren.

Sims had won his last three fights before appearing on the mixed martial arts reality series.

Lashley, who also moonlights as a "face" for TNA Wrestling, entered the world of cage fighting back in Dec. 2008 as a co-headliner for South Florida's Mixed Fighting Alliance (MFA). The 6'3" powerhouse needed just 41-seconds to extirpate Joshua Franklin via doctor's stoppage.

Of course comparisons to fellow ex-WWE and amateur wrestler Brock Lesnar quickly followed, as the pasty-faced Goliath needed just four fights to win the UFC heavyweight championship from Randy Couture just a month prior to Lashley's MMA debut.

Those comparisons were quickly eradicated courtesy of Jason Guida at "March Badness" earlier this year. Most expected the American Top Team-trained fighter in just his second professional fight to steamroll the floundering journeyman.

It didn’t happen.

Despite taking the unanimous decision victory, "The Dominator" looked a bit green against the Ultimate Fighter washout and nearly succumbed to a guillotine choke in the third round of their pay-per-view contest.

His inexperience was clearly evident.

What was also evident was his desire to fight -- and improve. The Junction City, Kansas native took a fight against Mike Cook just two months later, submitting the Strikeforce veteran just 24-seconds into the first round at MFC 21: "Hard Knocks."

His most recent fight came against K-1 attraction Bob Sapp in the main event of "Ultimate Chaos" back on June 27. "The Beast" was put down in the first round via technical knockout and along with the quick win over Mike Cook, helped return some of the optimism to Lashley's future as a viable heavyweight contender.

Standing in his way is the colorful 37-fight veteran.

Strikeforce: "Miami" features a main event between Nick Diaz and DREAM Welterweight Champion Marius Zaromskis for the promotion's vacant 170-pound world title. Female powerhouse Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos will put her 145-pound title on the line against Marloes Coenen in the co-featured fight of the night.

In addition, feared K-1 striker "Marvelous" Melvin Manhoef will make his Strikeforce debut opposite the power-punching "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler. And joining them on the main card is the welterweight showdown between Jay "The Thoroughbred" Hieron and Joe "Diesel" Riggs.

Not too shabby.

UFC Quick Quote: Christmas coming late for the Coleman clan

"I have had a great training camp and this is going to be one hell of a fight because he is one of the best ever in my opinion and he is very mentally tough; which is one of the most important things in this sport and I actually think that is his best attribute. But like I said I've had a great training camp and I fully expect to win this fight.... It has been excellent out here and it really helps for me to get away from all the distractions that I would have had if I would have stayed in Columbus, Ohio. Since I got [to Las Vegas], when I am not at the gym training I come back to my hotel room and close the curtains and just concentrate on this fight....it is almost like my cave. For the last 50 days I go from my hotel room to the gym and then from the gym to my hotel room, I even had to cancel Christmas this year. I will celebrate Christmas with my kids when this fight is over but for right now it's all about taking care of business.... I believe that this is the biggest fight I have ever been in. I realize how big of a fight this is and how important it is to my career.  For me this fight couldn't be any bigger and I need to come out with the victory."

-- Former UFC heavyweight champion Mark Coleman talks to PunchDrunkGamer.com about the numerous sacrifices he has made to ensure that he is in top form for Randy Couture at UFC 109: "Relentless" on Feb. 6. In fact, "The Hammer" canceled Christmas in Columbus so he could concentrate 100 percent on what he refers to as the biggest fight of his career. Can an in-shape Coleman, 45, defy the odds -- and Father Time -- once again and actually make a run at the light heavyweight title in 2010 or is he simply too far along in his career to hand with anyone in the upper echelon of the division?

Brock Lesnar 'Unleashed' tonight (Jan. 22) on Spike TV

Posted: 22 Jan 2010 10:07 AM PST

Lesnar_medium

Spike TV announced it will feature current UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar in back-to-back episodes of "UFC Unleashed" tonight (Friday, Jan. 22, 2010).

The first episode, airing at 7 p.m., is expected to feature Lesnar's first fight against his good buddy Frank Mir, where he suffered his only defeat inside the Octagon. The following episode at 8 p.m. will showcase the rematch between Lesnar and Mir that took place at UFC 100.

With Wednesday's announcement of Brock Lesnar's return, which appears set for this summer, Spike is obviously aiming to refresh the minds of fight fans who may have forgotten just how dominant the former WWE star has been since joining the promotion.

Directly following "UFC Unleashed" will be last week's debut episode of "The Best of Pride" series with fights featuring Wanderlei Silva, Rampage Jackson, Chuck Liddell, and Anderson Silva. Then, at 10 p.m., a new espisode of the show will premiere, featuring bouts with Cro Cop, Don Frye and Jens Pulver.

So there you have it -- your Friday night is planned thanks to Spike. Invite your friends over, force your girlfriend to watch it, or enjoy all the great MMA action by yourself.

We're not judging.

UFC 109 odds and betting lines for 'Relentless' on Feb. 6

Great news, Maniacs.

Valentine's Day is almost upon us, which means it's that time of year to blow your wad on that special someone who is secretly hoping you'll upgrade last year's sorry combination of rotting flowers and syrup-filled chocolates for a fun-filled night on the town.

What better way to say "I Love You" than a huge bulge in your jeans? No, the other bulge, the one caused by your protruding bankroll after you finally listened to Nostradumbass and picked some winners for a change.

UFC 109: "Relentless" is set to go down a little over two weeks from today (Sat., Feb. 6, 2010) from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Can Mark Coleman drop a 205-pound "Hammer" on Randy Couture? How about Frank Trigg sending Matt Serra back to New Yawk and into retirement with another loss?

Well, it's certainly possible -- just like everything else in this sport -- and those who lay down some cheddar on the underdogs on Feb. 6 stand to make a healthy profit. Assuming you win, of course. And if it's any consolation, even if you come up snake eyes, you'll still be a winner in my book (cue emoticon).

Here are the latest UFC 109 odds (- = favorite; + = underdog):

Eric Schafer vs Jason Brilz set for UFC on Versus 1

Schafer-brilz_medium

Canada fires back at Brock Lesnar after UFC champ slams 'Third World' health care

Quoteworthy:

"I take real exception to being referred to as a third-world country operation. We have state-of-art equipment here. We are hardly a one-horse operation. The attending physician was very qualified and very respected. He's been in the business for more than 30 years. And he has the skills to diagnose a condition such as diverticulitis without a CT scan. We have checked this particular health record and were are quite confident that the correct diagnosis was given and the best course of treatment offered. I wouldn't be so arrogant as to compare ourselves to the Mayo Clinic, they're the experts. But I really take exception to someone giving us that kind of media coverage for their own political reasons. Who knows, maybe he didn't like the bill."

Carmel Olson, CEO of Brandon's regional health authority, rebukes Brock Lesnar's assessment of Canadian health care after the UFC Heavyweight Champion was hospitalized during a hunting trip due to painful symptoms stemming from his bout with diverticulitis. Lesnar referred to the experience to being in a "Third World" and subsequently segued into a cheap plug for his own views on U.S. health care reform. Any MMAmaniacs out there North of the border that can argue for or against the pasty-faced champ?

Strikeforce tickets for Challengers VI event from the San Jose Civic Auditorium on sale today (Jan. 22)

Posted: 22 Jan 2010 07:10 AM PST

SF Challengers
Tickets for the upcoming Strikeforce Challengers VI event set to go down on Friday, Feb. 26 from the San Jose Civic Auditorium in San Jose, CA, on will go on sale to the general public beginning today (Jan. 22) at 1 p.m. ET.

Tickets will be available at the San Jose Civic Auditorium box office, Ticketmaster and Strikeforce.com.

Strikeforce will once again put its partnership with M-1 Global to good use when highly touted M-1 prospect Karl "Psycho" Amoussou (11-2-1) headlines "Challengers VI" opposite well rounded veteran Trevor Prangley (22-5) in the night's main event.

The main card will air live on Showtime, beginning at 11 p.m. ET.

Prangley is a winner of five straight, including a unanimous decision win over the company's former top contender, Anthony Ruiz, which took place on Strikeforce's second show at the Playboy Mansion back in September 2008.

The South African also holds notable career wins over Chael Sonnen, Travis Lutter and Andrei Semenov (twice).

"Psycho" is a Frenchman who has shown the ability to finish his opponents quickly with eight career wins inside the first round. He seems to be well rounded with a solid ground and pound attack, as well as boasts a crafty submission game to boot.

He's managed to put together a pretty nice record of (6-2) under the M-1 banner. Prangley is a step up in competition for him, but this should be a very competitive fight.

In the co-main event of the night, Japanese import Takayo Hashi (12-1) and undefeated Canadian brawler Sarah Kaufman (10-0) will collide in a 135-pound women's title fight.

Hashi is the more methodical, grind-it-out type fighter who will try to catch her opponents in submissions. Meanwhile, Kaufman is more of a head hunter -- she hits hard and specializes in one thing ... knocking chicks out. She's always a treat to watch.

This should be a nice contrast of styles.

Here's what the lineup for the Showtime televised portion of the event is looking like so far:

185 lbs.: Trevor Prangley (22-5) vs. Karl "Psycho" Amoussou (11-2-1)
135 lbs.: Sarah Kaufman (10-0) vs. Takayo Hashi (12-1)
185 lbs.: Paul Bradley (12-1) vs. Luke Rockhold (6-1)
170 lbs.: Tarec Saffiedine (7-2) vs. James Terry (7-1)
185 lbs.: Raul Castillo (6-0) vs. Yancy Madeiros (4-0)

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide live blow-by-blow coverage of the main card action on fight night, as well as any other news and notes leading up to the event.

Stay tuned.
