205 lbs.: Mark Coleman vs. Randy Couture

Main card (Televised):

185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen

KJ Noons pulled from Strikeforce: 'Miami' event with Billy Evangelista hurt

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 11:24 PM PST

Noons450_medium

Former Elite XC lightweight champion KJ Noons is patiently waiting to make his return to Strikeforce -- but it won't be against Billy Evangelista on the main card of the upcoming "Miami" event slated for the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida, on Jan. 30.

MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) confirmed with Noons earlier today that he's been pulled from the card and "placed on standby" after Evangelista reportedly suffered an undisclosed injury in training.

Noons -- who is ready to compete in the unlikely event another fighter withdraws from the card -- has been out of mixed martial arts for more than a year following his retirement from the sport in late 2008 after he was stripped of his 155-pound title for refusing to accept a rematch with Nick Diaz under the terms Elite XC was offering.

"King Karl" felt that his previous performance against Diaz (a first round technical knockout) and his lone title defense -- a first round technical knockout victory over Yves Edwards in June of 2008 -- was enough to at least earn himself a bigger paycheck than Diaz in the rematch.

The promotion, however, apparently disagreed, causing a big mess and ultimately leading to Noons being forced to relinquish his title.

The ex-boxer then decided to make an attempt to return to his roots inside the ring, but a disappointing decision loss to James Countryman earlier this year threw a wrench into those plans. The City Boxing product did manage to put together a solid record of 4-1 as a pugilist, but he likely wasn't going to be winning a world title anytime soon.

That may not be the case in Strikeforce; however, he can't start making waves until he starts throwing hands -- which may not happen before April.

Stay tuned.

The Jan. 30 Strikeforce event is set to air at 8 p.m. ET live on Showtime and will mark the promotion’s debut in the "Sunshine State." The main event features Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight title. Current Strikeforce Women's Champion Cristian 'Cyborg' Santos will also be in action against Marloes Coenen.

UFC 107: 'Penn vs Sanchez' vs Strikeforce: 'Miami' on tap for Jan. 30

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 04:40 PM PST

New Year, same strategy.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will once again give mixed martial arts fans options while one of its competitors, Strikeforce, promotes a live show.

UFC 107: "Penn vs. Sanchez," which was one of the more successful pay-per-view (PPV) events of 2009 for the promotion, will re-air on Spike TV on Jan. 30, 2010, at 10 p.m. ET.

Does the date sound familiar? Well, it should.

Strikeforce: "Miami" is scheduled to go off that same night from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., on SHOWTIME.

Back in August, a UFC 100 replay that aired on Spike TV directly opposite the Strikeforce: "Carano vs Cyborg" event, drew a whopping two million viewers for a 1.8 rating in men 18-34, a 1.7 rating in men 18-49 and a 1.5 household rating.

Meanwhile, the Showtime broadcast of Strikeforce: "Carano vs. Cyborg," in comparison, averaged 576,000 viewers, with 856,000 tuning in for the night's main event.

It seems like an effective strategy ... if for nothing less than bragging rights alone.

UFC 107 featured a sensational performance from lightweight division champion BJ "The Prodigy" Penn as he successfully defended his title against number one division contender Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez in dominating fashion.

Former two-time heavyweight champion Frank Mir began his quest for a third title when he submitted Cheick Kongo in the co-featured fight of the night.

Strikeforce: "Miami," on the other hand, has a dynamite main event planned between Nick Diaz and Marius Zaromskis to determine the vacant Strikeforce welterweight title. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos is slated to defend her 145-pound crown for the first time ever against Marloes Coenen.

What are your plans ... have a preference?

UFC 108 ratings on Spike TV attract 1.5 million viewers

Spike TV's preliminary card broadcast for UFC events has been a boon for casual MMA fans and enthusiasts alike since it began in September with UFC 103.

In fact, UFC 108 generated the biggest overall audience for the preliminary card broadcasts yet, while the ratings remained roughly the same.

Spike announced that an estimated average of 1.5 million viewers watched the one-hour broadcast of UFC 108 preliminary bouts. The bouts featured in the segment included Cole Miller-Dan Lauzon and Martin Kampmann-Jakob Vokmann, as well as replays of Mark Munoz-Ryan Jensen and Mike Pyle-Jake Ellenberger.

To put the figure in perspective, the UFC 103 and 104 shows drew 1.4 million viewers, while UFC 106 recorded 1.3 million.

Those broadcasts generated household ratings of 1.0, as did Saturday's UFC 108 program. A ratings point represents 1 percent of total TV households in the United States.

Melvin Manhoef vs Robbie Lawler in the works for Strikeforce: 'Miami' on Jan. 30

Manhoef-lawler_medium

K-1 wrecking machine and mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran Melvin Manhoef (24-6-1) is in talks to make his Strikeforce debut opposite the hard-hitting Robbie Lawler on the main card of the Jan. 30 "Miami" event at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida.

MMAmania.com confirmed the match was under consideration earlier today -- though bout agreements have not yet been distributed and nothing is official at this time.

Manhoef looked "Marvelous" in the FieLDS Dynamite!! 2009 year end supershow, putting Kazuo Misaki on queer street with his trademark blitzkrieg of power punches. It quickly erased his submission loss to Paulo Filho at DREAM 10 last July.

Opponents have shown "No Mercy" when it comes to exposing Manhoef's ground game. In fact, the Dutch destroyer is 7-3 in his last ten fights with all seven wins by way of (T)KO and all three losses by way of -- you guessed it -- submission.

I don't think it's by accident that he's being paired with another dangerous striker who's susceptible to the ground game.

Lawler is coming off a "Ruthless" submission loss to current Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields. Despite entering the June 6 bout on a five-fight win streak, the power-puncher gift-wrapped his head for a textbook guillotine, tapping out to the grappling specialist at just 2:02 in the first round.

His plan was to rebound against the well traveled Trevor Prangley at the Dec. 19 "Evolution" event; however, the South African wrestler was injured just days before the fight, prompting Strikeforce officials to scrap the bout altogether with no suitable replacement to be found.

Lawler was publicly upset about missing a payday, but in the end it may have been a blessing in disguise as Manhoef is a God overseas and a win at "Miami" could really elevate the stock of the HIT Squad striker.

"When people start going to jail, people will stop doing it. It’s going to be a battle, man. It’s going to be a battle, but I’m ready to (expletive) fight. We’re gonna go after them, we’re gonna go after them hard, and we’re gonna hurt ‘em. (Piracy) hasn’t cost us anything compared to what it’s going to cost us to go after these guys. It’s gonna cost us a lot of money, but guess what—it’s gonna cost them a lot of money. It’s gonna get to the point where it’s like, you know what, (expletive) it, maybe we shouldn’t pirate MMA any more. These websites … you got these websites like Justin.tv, and they pirate all kinds of things. They play all kinds of (expletive) on there. Well, we’re gonna make it where it’s not worth it to put UFC events up on the website."

UFC President Dana White is prepared to crack down on illegal streams of UFC pay-per-views and other related content by turning the legal dogs loose on the "Pirates" who cut into the Zuffa profits with grainy footage and choppy frame rates. While it's impossible to enforce a worldwide lockdown on illegal streams, I do feel sorry for the handful of pirates who do get nabbed -- they're sure to be made an example of. UFC legal department off the port bow!

WEC Quick Quote: Ben Henderson's slick submission defense has Varner 'rethinking' his gameplan

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 09:28 AM PST

Henderson-no-quit_medium

"Ben Henderson ... To weather that storm and to get out of some of the submissions that he did (against Donald Cerrone), that was super-impressive man. He’s got like a rubber neck, and that’s definitely something that I had to think about in this training camp. Do I wanna go for some of those chokes? Some of my guillotine a lot and my darce, a lot of stuff where it’s a head and an arm, or any sort of neck choke is something that I’m really, really good at. Anything from like a front headlock position is where I finish a lot of people in the gym. The fact that he was able to get out from those submissions is gonna make me….it’s made me rethink maybe jumping for that guillotine if I got him hurt. Or, if it’s there, to go for it and maybe not expend so much energy in trying to finish it."

WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner joined Pro MMA Radio last Monday to discuss his upcoming bout with the very "smooth" Benson Henderson. Henderson's slick submission defense and high flexibility (or maybe pain tolerance) has Varner "on the fence" in terms of the submission game. WEC 46: "Varner vs. Henderson" is this Sunday (Jan. 10). It may come as no surprise if Varner abandons his submission game early. And, after everything we saw when Henderson fought Donald Cerrone at WEC 43, who can blame him?

UFC 107 drug test results come back clean from the Tennessee Athletic Commission for 'Penn vs Sanchez'

The Tennessee Athletic Commission (TAC) today confirmed that 4 of the 22 competitors who were tested for illegal/banned substances after competing at UFC 107: "Penn vs. Sanchez" on Dec. 12 have all passed with flying colors.

Current UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn as well as challenger Diego Sanchez and welterweights Jon Fitch and Mike Pierce were all screened for performance enhancers such as steroids and drugs of abuse like cocaine and marijuana, among others.

Results from these battery of tests all returned negative.

The fighters mentioned above were randomly selected. However, athletic commissions typically test the main event participants and fight night winners, as well as those who have failed drug tests in the past.

UFC 107: "Penn vs. Sanchez" featured a sensational performance from lightweight division champion BJ "The Prodigy" Penn as he successfully defended his title against number one division contender Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez in dominating fashion.

Former two-time heavyweight champion Frank Mir began his quest for a third title when he submitted Cheick Kongo in the co-featured fight of the night.

'Monster' mash: Randy Couture doesn't make it out of the first round against Mark 'Country Boy' Coleman

"If Mark Coleman is in shape, Randy doesn’t make it past first round. Mark has got heavy hands. He’s got country boy strength. He’s got generations of strong country motherfuckers on his side. He’s excited. He’s going to surprise everyone."

Kevin "The Monster" Randleman sounds off on his friend and former Hammerhouse training partner Mark Coleman in regards to "The Hammer's" upcoming match against fellow UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture. Aside from both being fortysomething, the two wrestlers are former UFC heavyweight champions trying to retain their MMA value as light heavyweights. Does "The Natural" surpass Coleman in the longevity department? Or will the winner of the PRIDE 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix prove he's still got a few tricks up his sleeve at UFC 109 on Feb. 6?

Bellator Fighting Championships signs featherweight Georgi ‘Insane’ Karakhanyan

Georgi_medium

CHICAGO (January 5, 2010) — Bellator Fighting Championships announced today the exclusive signing of top mixed martial artist Georgi "Insane" Karakhanyan, a former professional soccer player and emerging MMA star, to compete in the featherweight (145 lb.) division during Bellator Season 2.

Karakhanyan, 24, has compiled a record of 12-1-1 since making his professional MMA debut in 2006, and was rated by multiple websites as the top unsigned featherweight in the world prior to his signing with Bellator. His only loss came via a 2008 split decision.

"With 12 wins and just one loss under his belt, Georgi is a proven winner" said Bjorn Rebney, founder and CEO of Bellator Fighting Championships. "He brings an explosive style to the cage that makes for great fights. We are excited to welcome Georgi to Bellator."

Born in Moscow, Russia, to Armenian parents, Karakhanyan was introduced to martial arts at the age of six by his father, a karate black-belt. Soon, though, he fell in love with soccer and went on to play at the amateur and professional levels in Russia, Spain and the U.S.

While playing for the San Diego Sockers of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), Karakhanyan began studying Jiu-Jitsu as part of his conditioning regimen. When the team folded, he decided to take up fighting full-time.

"Maybe it’s because I played soccer all those year, but I like to kick when I’m in the cage and I’m a strong kicker," Karakhanyan said. "I like to keep the fight standing up, but I’ll find a way to beat my opponent if he takes it to the ground."

Karakhanyan, who coaches children and adults in martial arts at the Millenia MMA gym in his current hometown of Riverside, Calif., laughed when asked about the derivation of his nickname, "Insane." It is a loose translation of the Armenian "gizh," a word his mother jokingly used to describe his sometimes quirky behavior as a child.

Karakhanyan admits he has done his best to live up to the name during his career in MMA.

"I do some strange things in the cage sometime," he said. "I talk to my corner, I talk to my opponents. I like to surprise people. That’s what I’m all about."

Karakhanyan is the latest fighter to sign with Bellator since the announcement, in October, of the promotion’s historic new TV distribution alliances with FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo. Bellator Season 2 begins April 8, 2010 and will run for 12 weeks. Bellator Season 3 will follow beginning Aug. 12, 2010, and will also run for 12 successive weeks.

Each of Bellator’s 24 fights during Seasons 2 and 3 will be distributed live in primetime on Thursday nights on FOX Sports Net and its regional sports network affiliates. The top moments from each week’s live events will then be condensed into an action-packed 30-minute highlight show, broadcast every Saturday night, late night, on NBC. A one-hour highlight show will air in Spanish on Telemundo every Saturday night from midnight to 1 a.m. Each of the three broadcasts will be aired in high definition.

UFC Quick Quote: Wanderlei Silva looking to knock out Michael Bisping in the second round at UFC 110

Posted: 05 Jan 2010 06:38 AM PST

Wandy-flex_medium

"I'm doing a lot of standup because I want to knock him out. He's a man that likes to fight standup and sometimes he's a guy afraid to shoot. I've been training more boxing, Muay Thai, knees, elbows. I want to make a very interesting show for my friends. Bisping, he's got a great style. I'm going to try (for the KO) in the second. Going to try in the first, too, sure. Part of fight today is everybody is a strong guy, big guy. You wrap your hands, but it's still solid. One touch and it's done. One wrong movement and a guy catches you, it's done. I like the fight with Michael Bisping though. He's got a great style. At this moment, I don't want a fight with (Anderson Silva). He's the champion. I need to prove myself again inside the Octagon. I need to fight better. After few fights I would feel comfortable, but now, I don't want a fight with him."

Mixed Martial Arts icon Wanderlei Silva (32-10-1) talks to fans during the UFC 108 pre-fight Q&A (via Las Vegas Sun) about violently ending his upcoming middleweight scrap against Michael Bisping at UFC 110 from the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia, on Feb. 21. "The Axe Murderer" has just one win in four attempts under the Zuffa banner but fights with such intensity and reckless abandon that no fan would dare complain about his spot among the Octagon elite on the main card of a UFC pay-per-view. Would a devastating loss to "The Count" become the catalyst for a premature retirement? Or does Silva always have a home on a UFC fight card?
