Anderson Silva fails to appear at MFS seminar in Houston

Quoteworthy:

“We want to issue an official statement regarding the seminar that was suppose to take place this weekend with Anderson “Spider” Silva. We received a phone call last night from Anderson’s manager Ed informing us that the seminar was going to be canceled due to a personal family health issues. Obviously we were taken a back and concerned for Anderson and his family. We were also very disappointed for all of our students and fans who had planned to attend our seminar this weekend. It was brought to our attention this morning that Anderson and Nogueria are both having a two day seminar at their grand opening event in Miami. If this is true then we have been completely mislead and as you can imagine we are furious at this. We are doing our due diligence to confirm that this is really happening. If this is true we will take all legal recourse possible. We are extremely sorry for all those who planned on attending this event!”

That’s the official statement from Miletich Fighting Systems (MFS) in Houston, Texas, which had booked UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva to conduct a seminar at its training facility. Silva backed out of the event at the last minute, indicating (allegedly) that family health issues were the reason behind his inability to attend. However, there’s a belief that MFS was “mislead” because Silva was actually at the grand opening of his own gym in Miami, Fla., this weekend, conducting a two-day seminar with his business partner, friend and UFC Heavyweight Champion, Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira. Someone — Silva or MFS — is clearly not being truthful. Either way it sounds like there a a lot of disappointed fans in Texas right now.

Cheick Kongo vs Dan Evensen UFC 87 fight set

Posted: 19 May 2008 08:35 AM CDT

Cheick Kongo (11-4-1) will introduce mixed martial arts veteran Dan Evensen (10-2) to the Octagon at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” at the Target Center in MInneapolis, Minn., on August 9, according to a recent MySpace.com announcement from “The French Sensation.”

Kongo — who was recently on the short list of top contenders in the division — dropped a unanimous decision to Heath Herring at UFC 82: “Pride of a Champion” his last time out back in March. The former kickboxer and dangerous striker had a puzzling strategy for the fight, deciding to takedown the “Texas Crazy Horse” rather than stand and trade.

It didn’t work, and now Kongo will look to get back to his winning ways against Evensen.

A three-fight BodogFight veteran, as well as a regular in the Gladiator Challenge events earlier in his career, Evensen comes into the bout riding a four-fight win streak. He most recently outpointed Konstantin Gluhov on all three judges scorecards at BodogFight: “USA vs Russia” in November 2007.

The UFC 87 pay-per-view (PPV) event was just made official over the weekend, featuring the heavyweight showdown between Brock Lesnar and Mark Coleman, as well as the lightweight clash between Kenny Florian and Roger Huerta.

Carlton Haselrig vs Carlos Moreno Elite XC fight set for May 31

Posted: 19 May 2008 08:12 AM CDT

Carlos Moreno (5-2) and Carlton Haselrig (1-0) have signed to fight on the Elite XC under card for the May 31 network television debut on CBS at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., according to Sherdog.com.

Haselrig has had a very productive and accomplished career in sports. As a wrestler in college he was a three-time national champion in Division II and a three-time national champion in Division I. He is the only collegiate wrestler to hold that distinction, and one of few to ever defeat Kurt Angle in a college wrestling match.

Despite focusing primarily on wrestling in college and not playing any football, Haselrig was able to make the Pittsburgh Steelers team as an offensive lineman and by his third year was All-Pro at that position.

His mixed martial arts debut was last month at Battle Cage Extreme 4 where he was victorious over Shane Ott with a first round TKO.

Moreno is more of a striker. He has 4 (T)KO’s to his credit. He fought four times last year, going 3-1 with his lone loss coming to Kevin Jordan by a submission because of strikes.

After a short stint on BET’s “Iron Ring,” Moreno is getting his first shot with a legitimate big time MMA organization in Elite XC. Haselrig presents a stiff test for a guy who is mostly a striker, but if Moreno can keep his distance and use his strengths, this fight could be a good one.

The rest of the May 31 “Saturday Night Fights” card looks like this:

Main event:

Kimbo Slice vs. James “The Colossus” Thompson

Main card:

“Ruthless” Robbie Lawler vs. Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith for middleweight title
Joey Villasenor vs. Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni
Gina “Conviction” Carano vs. Kaitlin Young
Brett “The Grim Rogers vs. Jon Murphy

Under card:

Mike Groves vs. Joe Sampieri
Zach McKovsky vs. Andre Soares
James “Binky” Jones vs. Calvin Kattar
Wilson Reis vs. Justin Robbins
Nick Serra vs. Matt Makovski
Chris Liguori vs. Jim Bova

Kimbo Slice to present at Country Music Awards tonight (Sunday)

Posted: 18 May 2008 03:54 PM CDT

kimbo slice
That’s not a typo.

Apparently Elite XC heavyweight Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson doesn’t have enough fans, and he’s looking to add more from another genre tonight as he makes an appearance as a presenter at the 43rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards (CMAs), according to SportsIlustrated.com.

The awards show will air tonight (Sunday) at 8 p.m. ET and run through 11 p.m. ET.

I’m not one to stereotype people, but I would have never pinned Kimbo for a country music fan. I wonder if he’ll be fully equipped with an oversized belt buckle, cowboy boots and a 10 gallon hat.

That’s doubtful … this appearance more than likely has more to do with both the awards show and Elite XC’s next event being on CBS on May 31.

I wouldn’t normally have any interest at all in the CMAs, but Kimbo certainly adds a little bit of appeal. This could actually be worth a watch … for a few seconds.

The show will be hosted for the 10th time by country music superstar Reba McEntire. Other stars expected to be performing are Trace Adkins, Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry and Miranda Lambert.

There’s no word on whether or not the aesthetic Elite XC dance troupe will join him on stage.

Sengoku Second Battle: Barnett, Randleman victorious

Posted: 18 May 2008 11:01 AM CDT

Former UFC heavyweight champion and PRIDE superstar Josh "The Babyface Assassin" Barnett (22-5) defeated fellow UFC veteran Jeff "The Snowman" Monson (24-8) via unanimous decision earlier this morning at Sengoku II: Second Battle at Tokyo's Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan.

In an event filled with slick first-round submissions, Barnett needed a decision to overcome the wily Monson. Barnett however was dominant in his performance, controlling Monson on the ground and using his size to stifle his much smaller opponent.

In the night’s only other decision, former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin "The Monster" Randleman (17-12) returned to the win column with a controversial decision over Pancrase veteran Ryo Kawamura (8-3-2).

Randleman hadn’t competed since October of 2006 when he was submitted by Shogun Rua at PRIDE 32. The former NCAA national champion was in trouble with the law in August of 2007 and even more trouble with a gruesome staph infection last October.

It’s great to see him back and hopefully his win over Kawamura is a sign of things to come.

Also on the card, former UFC middleweight Jorge Santiago (17-7) continued his hot streak by submitting Grabaka’s Yuki Sasaki (21-14-1). Santiago was just 1-2 in the UFC, having been knocked out by Chris Leben at Fight Night 6 and Alan Belcher at Fight Night 7.

Since then he’s an impressive 5-0, dominating the competition with a variety of submissions and knockouts.

Three-time King of Pancrase Yuki Kondo (48-22-6) was submitted by grappling deity Roger Gracie (2-0). Kondo had the thankless role of late fill-in for Gracie, who was flying solo until May 5th, when Kondo was finally announced.

Here are the Sengoku II: Second Battle complete results:

-Satoru Kitaoka defeats Ian James Schaffa via submission (Guillotine Choke - R1)
-Mike Pyle defeats Dan Hornbuckle via submission (Triangle Choke - R1)
-Eiji Mitsuoka defeats Kwang Hee Lee submission (Rear Naked Choke - R1)
-Jorge Santiago defeats Yuki Sasaki via submission (Armbar - R3)
-Kiss Nakao defeats Jim York via KO (R2)
-Kevin Randleman defeats Ryo Kawamura via unanimous decision
-Roger Gracie defeats Yuki Kondo via sumbission (Rear Naked Choke - R1)
-Josh Barnett defeats Jeff Monson via unanimous decision

UFC Quick Quote: Chuck Liddell hamstring injury is ‘not good’

Posted: 18 May 2008 09:20 AM CDT

chuck liddell

“His injury’s not good. He can barely bend over and tie his shoe. He tore his leg real bad. It’s pretty nasty…. I know the doctor told him to kind of play it by ear. It’s one of those things that can heal in six days, or it could heal in 16 weeks. The doctor doesn’t really know. It depends on how fast Chuck can recover.”

– UFC President Dana White talks with FOXSports.com about the hamstring injury that Chuck Liddell recently sustained training for his fight with Rashad Evans at UFC 85: “Bedlam” in London, England, on June 7. He had to withdraw from the fight and there is no timetable for the return of the 39-year-old former light heavyweight champion. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua — who is also recovering from an injury — has encouraged “Iceman” to wait until he is 100 percent so the two can lock horns once and for all sometime in late 2008.
