UFC 85 card final; Rashad Evans will NOT fight

Posted: 21 May 2008 01:08 AM CDT

rashadThat’s not a joke.

Rashad Evans — who was scheduled to fight Thiago Silva (UFC 84), then Chuck Liddell, then James Irvin and finally Luis Cane — will now fight no one at UFC 85: “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7.

This despite an official report just yesterday evening that Cane was going to be pulled from his bout with Jason Lambert and he would take on Evans. Now the bout between Cane and Lambert is back on again and “Sugar” will fight another day … just not on June 7.

The middleweight showdown between Nate Marquardt and Thales Leites has been promoted to the televised portion of the pay-per-view (PPV) main card.

Here’s the snip from UFC.com:

“After more twists and turns than a Hollywood thriller, June 7th's UFC 85: Bedlam show has finally been set with 11 fights. Included is a move of the intriguing middleweight clash between Nate Marquardt and Thales Leites to the pay-per-view portion of the card, and a scrapping of the Rashad Evans vs James Irvin bout due to a broken foot suffered by Irvin. Evans, who was originally scheduled to take on Chuck Liddell on the card before 'The Iceman' tore a hamstring in his right leg, will not be fighting on June 7th.”

UFC 85, which features the main event between former welterweight champion Matt Hughes and Thiago Alves, is now set to showcase 11 fights.

Here’s the line up:

Main Event:

Matt Hughes (42-6) vs. Thiago Alves (14-3)

Main card (televised):

185 lbs.: Michael Bisping (15-1) vs. Jason Day (17-5)
170 lbs.: Mike Swick (11-2) vs. Marcus Davis (14-3)
185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (26-7) vs. Thales Leites (12-1)
265 lbs.: Brandon Vera (8-1) vs. Fabricio Werdum (10-3-1)

Under card (May not be broadcast):

185 lbs.: Martin Kampmann (15-2) vs. Jorge Rivera (15-6)
155 lbs.: Thiago Tavares (13-1) vs. Matt Wiman (9-3)
170 lbs.: Roan Carneiro (12-6) vs. Ryo Chonan (14-8)
205 lbs.: Jason Lambert (23-7) vs. Luis Arthur Cane (7-1)
170 lbs.: Jess Liaudin (12-9) vs. Paul Taylor (8-3-1)
265 lbs.: Neil Wain (4-0) vs. Antoni Hardonk (6-4)

Removing Evans from the card actually makes sense — there was no real upside in a fight with Cane. His sights are set on a light heavyweight title shot and a win over Cane would not do much to improve his standing in a very crowded 205-pound division.

And a loss would have been a major setback.

It’s just too bad we won’t get to see him take on Silva this Saturday as originally planned … that’s a good fight.

‘UFC Countdown’ 84 on Spike TV tonight at 11 p.m. ET (Tuesday)

Posted: 20 May 2008 08:25 PM CDT

Countdown to UFC 84: “Ill Will” will air tonight on Spike TV at 11 p.m. ET to promote the pay-per-view (PPV) event slated for this Saturday, May 24 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Not like it needs anymore hype — BJ Penn and Tito Ortiz have talked up their respective bouts like no other. It’s going to be an interesting night of fights to say the least.

Fireworks, anyone?

Here’s what we can expect on the hour-long program this evening via UFC.com:

“Go behind the scenes as BJ Penn (Hilo, HI) and Sean Sherk (Oak Grove, MN) prepare for a lightweight championship battle. See how they train, eat and live in their home towns.”

You definitely don’t want to miss this.

But in case you do, UFC 84 Countdown: Penn vs. Sherk will re-air at 12 a.m. ET on Friday, May 22.

Rashad Evans vs Luis Cane UFC 85 fight booked; James Irvin injured

James Irvin sustained a broken foot while training for his fight against Rashad Evans at UFC 85: “Bedlam” in London, England, on June 7, forcing the promotion once again to shuffle the deck and repair a fight card riddled with replacements.

Luiz Cane — who was scheduled to take on Jason Lambert at the same event — has been plugged in to face “Sugar.” There’s no official word yet on whether or not “The Punisher” will still compete at the O2 Arena against a soon to be named opponent or if he’ll be bumped to a future card.

This is more bad news for Irvin who, admittedly, had a disastrous fight campaign in 2007, battling injuries and bizarre finishes inside the Octagon.

He got back on track with a sensational nine-second first round knockout of Houston Alexander at UFC Fight Night 13 last month. And when Chuck Liddell went down with a torn hamstring, he was called on to try and continue that run against Evans at UFC 85.

It apparently wasn’t meant to be … for now.

Cane lost his Octagon debut to Irvin at UFC 79: “Nemesis” because of a disqualification (illegal knee to the head). He was a highly touted prospect upon his arrival with the organization.

He now has a chance to show what he’s got against a relatively high profile opponent in Evans.

This is the third opponent for Evans, who will look to keep his undefeated record intact and preserve his chances at a light heavyweight title shot sometime down the road.

It will be interesting to see if the opponent carousel will have any impact on his performance in less than three weeks.

Once again MMAmania.com Senior Writer Jesse Holland was back with "Mr. Sunshine" Steve Cofield on ESPN Radio to preview the UFC 84: "Ill Will" pay-per-view (PPV) event that takes place Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

To check out the audio click below:

During the segment, Jesse and Steve discuss Tito Ortiz’s swan song, the fine line between hype and insanity in the upcoming Sherk/Penn fight, and whether or not Wanderlei Silva will be his old self or just plain old when he faces Keith Jardine on Saturday night.

There's more, but if I told you everything then there would be no reason to listen to the audio, right?

Big thanks (as always) to Mr. Sunshine for having us on.

Matt Hughes NRA convention a hit last week

Quoteworthy:

“I caught up with nine-time UFC World Champion Matt Hughes at the Knight Rifles booth early Saturday morning and asked him about his hunting and shooting background. He and his identical twin brother, Mark, grew up hunting and shooting on their rural farm in Illinois. They continue to hunt, but prefer the time they get to spend together on the target range because it allows more trigger time together. According to Hughes, when hunting, you may get only one shot — if that — and then it’s over, but with targets you shoot until you either run out of ammo, time, or daylight — whichever comes first. It was obvious to me from the vigor in his eyes that target shooting with Mark is the height of Matt’s shooting enjoyment.”

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes and his twin brother visit the NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits in Louisville, KY, last week along with other celebrities. The avid hunter is in the midst of training for his main event fight against Thiago Alves at UFC 85: “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7.

UFC 88: Atlanta the likely destination on September 6

UFC 88 will likely take place in Atlanta, Ga., on Saturday, September 6, setting up the first show for the promotion inside the “Peach State” in more than a decade.

In fact, UFC 11: “The Proving Ground” (September 1996) and UFC 13: “The Ultimate Force” (May 1997) were the only to shows ever held in Georgia, which took place at the Augusta Civic Center in Augusta.

No specific venue was identified; however it’s speculated that the pay-per-view (PPV) event will be held at the Philips Arena — home of the NBAs Atlanta Hawks and NHLs Atlanta Thrashers. The $213.5 million facility can hold approximately 18,500 screaming mixed martial arts maniacs.

The UFC has made a big push in recent years to explore new areas and revisit others. For example, UFC Fight Night 13 earlier this year was held in Colorado — the first time since the early days back from 1993 to 1995.

On the international stage, the UFC has held recent events in England, Ireland and Canada, and will look to target Germany, the Philippines and Australia, specifically, in the months ahead.

Stay tuned for more details.
