CBS Elite XC results for ‘Saturday Night Fights’ on May 31

With perhaps the biggest lightweight fight in the history of mixed martial arts in the books, it’s now time to turn our attention to another historical event set to take place this coming Saturday, May 31, as Elite XC and CBS will join forces to televise a LIVE MMA event for the first time ever on free television.

The event is being held at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and will air live on CBS starting at 10 p.m. ET. MMAmania.com will, of course, provide LIVE blow-by-blow coverage at this time so you can comment and discuss the action as it happens.

In addition, we will provide quick results of the under card action at about 8 p.m. ET.

Here’s the line up:

Main event:

265 lbs.: Kimbo Slice vs. James "The Colossus" Thompson

Main card (televised):

185 lbs.: Elite XC Middleweight Champion "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler vs. Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith
185 lbs: Joey Villasenor vs. Phil "The New York Badass" Baroni
140 lbs: Gina "Conviction" Carano vs. Kaitlin Young
265 lbs.: Brett "The Grim Rogers vs. Jon Murphy

Under card (may not be broadcast):

265 lbs.: Carlos Moreno vs. Carlton Haselrig
185 lbs.: Chris Liguori vs. Jim Bova
170 lbs.: Nick Serra vs. Matt Makowski
140 lbs.: Wilson Reis vs. Justin Robbins
160 lbs.: James "Binky" Jones vs. Calvin Kattar
135 lbs.: Zach Makovsky vs. Andre Soares
155 lbs.: Mike Groves vs. Joe Sampieri

This is scheduled to be the first of four Elite XC “Saturday Night Fights” events being hosted by CBS this year. If the event is a success in the ratings — like both Elite XC and CBS are predicting — we could be seeing the start of a trend that would be a huge win for the fans.

In fact, Elite XC Live Events President Gary Shaw is expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 to 4 million viewers for the inaugural show, which is a modest number that would certainly be deemed a success, considering game one of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals could only muster up 2.3 million viewers.

Therefore, whether you’ve been watching for 3 years or 30 seconds, it doesn’t matter, make sure your televisions are tuned to CBS Saturday night and your computers stay locked on MMAmania.

We’ll have plenty more this week leading up to the event.

Here’s more from TMZ.com:

“MJ rolled up to the event in a wheelchair, just in time to watch Tito Ortiz get smacked around … that is, if he could see anything through those ridiculously blacked out shades.”

Speechless.

Manny Gamburyan vs Rob Emerson UFC 87 fight scheduled

Castmates on season five of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) — Manny Gamburyan (8-2) and Rob Emerson (7-6) — will hook ‘em up at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn., on August 9, according to 15Rounds.com.

Since losing to Nate Diaz in the finals of the 16-man lightweight tournament at the TUF 5 Finale back in June 2007, Gamburyan has put together impressive back-to-back submission wins. He just bout took Nate Mohr’s ankle home with him at UFC 79: “Nemesis” and he choked out Jeff Cox his last time out at UFC Fight Night 13 in April.

Both fights lasted less than four minutes combined.

Emerson rebounded from a rare double knockout-tapout against Gray Maynard at TUF 5 Finale, which resulted in a no contest, to defeat Keita Nakamura via split decision at UFC 81: “Breaking Point” in February. It was actually the fifth straight win (sans the Maynard fight) for the former “Lords of South County” rich kid gang member.

The UFC 87 card is filling up fast, considering that, according to the same report, Gamburyan’s cousin, Karo Parisyan, is slated for the same show.

It’s a pay-per-view (PPV) event that features a world title fight between UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre and Jon Fitch, as well as a heavyweight showdown between Brock Lesnar and Heath Herring.

Ralek Gracie vs Mirko Cro Cop grappling match at DREAM 4

Posted: 26 May 2008 07:46 PM CDT

cro cop ralek gracie
The Pride FC 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix tournament winner, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, has agreed to compete against Ralek Gracie in a “special rules” two-round grappling match at DREAM 4 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on June 15, according to Nokaut.com.

Cro Cop was originally booked to take on Jerome LeBanner in a mixed martial arts bout that same evening; however, the fight has been postponed and will take place at a later date. The report did not indicate if it would take place at DREAM 5 (as previously reported) on July 5.

This news is a bit strange — Gracie is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt and grandson of the legendary Helio Gracie. In fact, the 20-something prodigy actually the son of UFC co-founder, Rorion Gracie. He made his highly anticipated MMA debut back in 2007, defeating Katuyori Shibata via submission (armbar) at a HERO’s event.

On the other hand, Cro Cop is a decorated striker who, unsurprisingly, prefers to strike. And if there’s ever been a knock on him it’s that his ground game is his weakest asset. He has one true submission win to his credit in 31 professional MMA bouts (he tapped out Kevin Randleman with a guillotine choke in 2004).

Here are Mirko’s thoughts on the decision to challenge Gracie:

“… he would prefer a grappling match with a points system, as he would have an improved chance to win using throws and takedowns, he still is looking forward to testing his ground game against top competition and is looking forward to the match.”

According to the report, “the fight will take place under modified Abu Dhabi rules: two five-minute rounds with no point system. The only way to win will be via submission. Should the fight go the distance, it will be declared an automatic draw.”

Weird.

DREAM 4 will feature the quarterfinals of the 2008 Middleweight Grand Prix tournament, as well as the showdown between Shinya Aoki and Katsuhiko Nagata to determine the fourth and final man to advance to the lightweight grand prix semifinals.

Jason Day ‘Count’ down to ‘Dooms’ day Michael Bisping UFC 85 fight (Part III)

Posted: 26 May 2008 02:54 PM CDT

jason day
Well, it’s two weeks away from my fight with Michael Bisping at UFC 85: “Bedlam” on June 7 and I am cruising along.

My weight is perfect and my training is going smooth. The first week of sport-specific training always kicks the crap out of me. It is physically exhausting, but it definitely helps me to peak at the right time.

Victor Valimaki came down from Edmonton to help put a little more heat on me through my rounds. It always helps to bring in guys to get a different energy and a different skill set. Valimaki is a tank — his size and strength definitely pushed my limits both standing and on the ground.

I always appreciate other fighters stepping up to help me.

My diet and micro-alignment coach from BodyArtFitness.com, Tanya Lee, noticed a trend with me: I get sick a few weeks before my fights. Therefore, this time we stayed on top of my immune system and I have been healthy all the way through my training.

It is an extra boost to my confidence knowing that I have been healthy throughout my training camp.

I capped off the week by taking in UFC 84: “Ill Will” on Saturday night. I thought the fights were great. I had picked BJ Penn to win but I didn’t think it would end like that, Sherk is a tank and BJ took it to him and ended it in exciting fashion.

It was awesome to see Wanderlei back in form — he is definitely one of my favorite fighters and I am glad to see him come out with the victory in the fashion he is accustomed to.

I am look forward to one last week of grinding before I leave for London, England. It is hard to describe the feelings and emotions leading up to the fight. Nervousness, anticipation and most of all anxiousness all play a big role leading up.

It is a rollercoaster ride for sure. I love it and I can’t wait to get in the cage let it all out. I have never been so eager to fight in my life … it will be a WAR!

Jason Day is a top Canadian mixed martial artist who was successful in his Octagon debut against Alan Belcher at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ on April 19. UFC President Dana White referred to his performance that night as “amazing” and has rewarded him with a high profile fight against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 light heavyweight winner, Michael Bisping. Day is on a red hot five-fight win streak, which he will put on the line against “The Count” at UFC 85: “Bedlam” at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7. He’ll detail his preparation for the bout right here at MMAmania.com with frequent updates. He would like to thank his sponsors Hardcor Fightwear & Apparel and BodyArt Fitness. ‘The Axe Murderer’ is back … and he isnt going anywhere (yet)

Quoteworthy:

“I think it has to be one of those things where Silva comes to me and says ‘these guys are huge, I need to go down to 185. There is one interesting fight for him at 185-pounds and there is (many) interesting fights at 205 for Silva.”

UFC President Dana White responds to questions about whether or not Wanderlei Silva would compete at 185 pounds going forward. “The Axe Murderer” snapped a three-fight losing skid this weekend at UFC 84: “Ill Will,” drilling Keith Jardine en route to a 36-second first round technical knockout. He holds two wins over reigning UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, which would make a third fight extremely marketable. Silva, however, more than likely needs one or two solid wins to earn a title shot … unless Forrest Griffin can upend the champ on July 5. So who’s next for Wanderlei?
