The staff at MMAmania.com spoke directly with the distributor who has confirmed that a total of 12 PRIDE FC DVD's are being released over the next 18 months. In addition to Kamikaze, PRIDE 33: Second Coming is scheduled for release on June 9. Zuffa — the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship — purchased the Japanese mixed martial arts promotion (and its biggest rival) early last year. With no television deal and most of its top fighters signing UFC contracts, the entity known as PRIDE became no more. Now fans will have an opportunity to relive the glory days on DVD. MMAmania.com will preview each disc as its title and release date become available. In the meantime, here's a quick peek at PRIDE 34: Kamikaze: PRIDE 34: Kamikaze FIGHT CARD: 1. Eye of the beholder: 10-9 for Kimbo in second round Posted: 02 Jun 2008 10:45 PM CDT
However, the judge in question should have picked a less decisive round to do it — Kimbo took 71 consecutive unanswered blows starting from 1:20 until the end of round two. To check out the video of Kimbo “winning” round two click here. Conspiracy theorists … conspire. Keep in mind that Elite XC does not hire judges nor appoint them to score certain fights. That’s the responsibility of the state athletic commission, which is its own entity and completely separate from Elite XC or any other promotion for that matter. |

UFC Countdown 85 to ‘Bedlam’ on Spike TV tonight (Monday) Posted: 02 Jun 2008 07:45 PM CDT
This will be a competitive card on Saturday afternoon and it will be good to get to know some of the up and coming fighters who will be in action. We have all seen the behind the scenes training of Matt Hughes before; however, one has to wonder about the change in preparation and/or mindset for one of the all time greats of the sport who has himself admitted that he is in the twilight of his career. His opponent in the main event, Thiago Alves, will also be featured on the show and he is one of the surging talents in the UFC. “The Pitbull” is among a handful of young fighters who we will be hearing from for a long in the stacked 170-pound division. We will also get the inside scoop on Michael Bisping during the show, who is coming off his most impressive showing inside the Octagon. He will take on Jason Day, who has been keeping us up to date here at MMAmania with his training for his showdown with “The Count” in his own backyard. It will be nice to finally put a visual to go along with the great posts Day has made availible to us maniacs. In addition, the always outspoken Brandon “The Truth” Vera — coming off a loss to Tim Sylvia and a broken hand — will be featured along with his opponent, Fabricio Werdum. Werdum is coming off an impressive victory over Gabriel Gonzaga his last time out. Vera will take one more stab on Saturday to prove that he belongs with the big boys in the heavyweight division, while Werdum will look to build on the momentum gained in his last fight and possibly set himself up for a championship fight later in the year against the winner of new The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) coaches, Frank Mir and reigning UFC Heavyweight Champion, Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira. Put simply, the hour-long special tonight should be a great lead up to a fabulous main card top to bottom on Saturday so be sure to tune in later on. If you miss the debut episode, “UFC Countdown” to 85 will re-air June 5 at 2 a.m. ET and June 7 at 2 p.m. on Spike TV. |
DREAM 4: Alistair Overeem vs. Tae Hyun Lee Posted: 02 Jun 2008 06:16 PM CDT
Overeem last competed at Strikeforce in 2007 where he pummeled UFC veteran Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello En route to a second round TKO stoppage. Overeem had mixed results in his PRIDE days (7-7) but has the kind of power-striking that can end a fight at any time. Lee, on the other hand, is relatively new to the sport with just two professional bouts. His last match was a TKO victory over the 13-23 Yoshihisa Yamamoto at K-1 Olympia Hero’s but prior to that he was stopped in the first round at PRIDE: Final Conflict Absolute by Ricardo “The Mutant” Morais. Also added to the card is the light heavyweight bout of Alavutdin Gadzhiyev (7-1) vs. Alexandre “Cacareco” Ferreira (16-5). Both fighters are coming off first round victories and it will be interesting to see if the heavy-handed Russian can deal with Cacareco’s “Luta Livre” - the Brazilian has 15 of his 16 wins come by way of submission. DREAM 4 is headlined by a special grappling match between former UFC and PRIDE competitor Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (23-6-2), who will be testing his grappling chops against submission guru Ralek Gracie (1-0). Here is current fight card for DREAM 4, which will air live in the United States on HDNet: Middleweight GP 2nd Round Fights: Lightweight GP 2nd Round Fight: Featherweight Fight: Light-Heavyweight Fight: Heavyweight Fight: Grappling Match: DREAM 4 will also feature the quarterfinals of the 2008 Middleweight Grand Prix tournament, as well as the showdown between Shinya Aoki and Katsuhiko Nagata to determine the fourth and final man to advance to the lightweight grand prix semifinals. |
UFC 84 fighters test clean for drugs and banned substances Posted: 02 Jun 2008 02:04 PM CDT The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today issued the results of the drug tests performed prior to UFC 84: “Ill Will” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 24, revealing that all 15 fighters who were screened for banned substances tested negative. BJ Penn, Sean Sherk, Keith Jardine, Wanderlei Silva, Tito Ortiz, Lyoto Machida, Rousimar Palhares, Ivan Salaverry, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou Sokoudjou, Rich Clementi, Yoshiyuki Yoshida, Shane Carwin, Thiago Silva, Foran Reljic and Dong Hyun Kim were all among the fighters who were randomly selected to provide samples before their fights. The tests are designed to deter fighters from ingesting performance enhancing drugs such as steroids and stimulants, as well drugs of abuse like marijuana, heroin, etc. NSAC has adopted a new year-round drug-testing policy, which is perhaps the strictest of its kind in the sport. In fact, the NSAC also tested Sherk, Penn and Ortiz weeks out from the pay-per-view (PPV) event to ensure that fighters don’t “cycle” off of substances prior to their tests. The tests were random — there was no other reason the fighters mentioned above we singled out. However, Sherk has tested positive for steroids in the past and Keith Kizer, NSAC executive director, has mentioned that previous failed tests will be a factor (among others) when it comes to deciding if a fighter should or should not be tested.
