Shonie Carter vs Luke Stewart Strikeforce fight set for June 27

Posted: 04 Jun 2008 08:16 AM CDT

strikeforce carter stewart
Up-and-coming Strikeforce welterweight fighterLuke Stewart (5-1) will look to rebound from the first loss of his career when he takes on “Ultimate Fighter 4″ alum and mixed martial arts veteran, Shonie Carter (39-17-7), at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on on June 27, according to a recent MySpace.com bulletin.

Perhaps best known for his spinning backfist knockout win against former champ Matt Serra seven years ago, Carter has since made his name a recognizable one in this business.

His 63 career professional fights prove that he is a true fighter, despite coming off as more of a showman at times. The list of names he’s fought against include Jon Fitch, Matt Serra, Pat Miletich, Dave Menne, Nate Marquardt, Chris Lytle, Karo Parysian, Marcus Davis, Jason McDonald and more.

He’s a true journeyman.

Stewart, on the other hand, is just beginning his journey. This will be his seventh professional mixed martial arts fight — all with the San Jose, Calif.-based Strikeforce promotion. He suffered the first set back of his young career this past March at Strikeforce: “Shamrock vs. Le” at the hands of Tiki Ghosn.

One of the most important things in a young fighters progression is how he handles his first loss and how he performs his next time out.

This is that test for Luke Stewart.

He’s a black belt under Ralph Gracie and spends a lot of time training with guys like Nick Diaz and Jake Shields. He’s a very confident — and coming off his first loss — he’s going to be very dangerous.

This should be a solid addition to this event, which is scheduled to air on HDNet. Check out the developing card after the jump.

Main Event:

Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez vs. Josh “The Punk” Thompson

Main Card:

Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Bobby Southworth vs. Anthony Ruiz
Nam Pham vs. Billy Evangelista

UFC Quick Quote: Dana White does the best he can

“I’m not your typical head of a sports league. I say exactly how I feel. I don’t hide it. I don’t lie. And I swear a lot. Some people think I’m a classless moron. Other people think I’m this monster that screws my fighters over. And other people like me. You can’t make everybody happy. But you gotta understand too, in this business, I’m the promoter. My role is I’m always gonna be the fucking bad guy. No matter what I do. Or how many great things I do for people. Or how many fighters I make millionaires. Because if you’re a fight promoter, and if you make a fucking dollar, you’re a scumbag. You shouldn’t get that money, the fighters should. I’m the bad guy. Always going to be the bad guy. I get it. I accept that role. I do the best I can.”

– UFC President Dana White talks to Rolling Stone about his role as promoter for the largest and most successful mixed martial arts promotion on the planet, addressing his unique approach and the public perception that it elicits.

Donald Trump to partner with Affliction MMA for ‘Banned’ event

donald trump affliction
Millionaire real estate developer, casino boss and reality television star, Donald Trump, is set to announce his foray into mixed martial arts this Thursday, June 5, at a press conference at Trump Tower in New York, N.Y., at 12 p.m. ET.

According to a press release issued today, “The Donald” will partner with the start up Affliction MMA promotion, which is set to pull the trigger on its debut show at the at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on July 19.

No particulars were revealed at this time.

Here’s a snip from Trump:

"I have been a fan of professional sports since childhood, and I am particularly impressed by the athleticism, courage, and strength of these disciplined athletes. This particular sport resembles my business style of being fast paced, strategic, and aggressive … remembering to never give up. I am particularly excited to partner with Affliction and become a major player in promotion of MMA; the youngest and fastest growing sport to emerge in the last century."

Trump is the latest deep-pocketed businessmen, joining Mark Cuban and Calvin Ayre, to toss his hat into the MMA ring.

He has a relationship with former UFC light heavyweight champion, Tito Ortiz, who was a contestant on his most recent season of “The Apprentice.” In fact, Trump was in attendance at UFC 84: “Ill Will” to show his support for “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy.”

Trump also hosted the New York press conference to announce the “Banned” pay-per-view (PPV) event, saying that the card was “great.”

Stay tuned for more details on the partnership between Trump and Affliction.

Affliction “Banned” will feature a main event fight between between former UFC heavyweight champion, Tim Sylvia, and the last man to hold the Pride FC heavyweight strap, Fedor Emelianenko. Superstars such as Josh Barnett, Pedro Rizzo, Paul Buentello, Aleksander Emelianenko, Matt Lindland, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Ben Rothwell and Antonio Rogerio Nogueria, among others, will also be in action.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs Justin McCully UFC 86 fight set for Las Vegas

UFC 86 Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Justin McCully

Heavyweights Gabriel Gonzaga (8-3) and Justin McCully (8-3-2) are penciled in to tangle at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Gonzaga is on a two-fight skid since smashing Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 70: “Nations Collide” with a devastating fight-ending head kick back in April 2007.

He earned a title shot against then-division champion, Randy Couture, which he lost via technical knockout (strikes) in round three at UFC 74: “Respect.” “Napao” then failed to avenge the first loss of his career to Fabricio Werdum, losing to the Brazilian jiu-jitsu player via technical knockout just after two rounds at UFC 80: “Rapid Fire” earlier this year.

It’s been quite a fall from grace for the Team Link member — he was being touted as the next big thing in the heavyweight division after his upset of Cro Cop. Gonzaga will have his chance to get back on track against “The Insane One.”

McCully has not competed in more than one year. In his most recent fight at UFC Fight Night 9, McCully outpointed Antoni Hardonk on all three judges scorecards en route to a unanimous decision win.

Even though he has not seen any action since April 2007, McCully has been linked to possible match ups against Cheick Kongo and Frank Mir while on hiatus. However, the Team Punishment camp member just returned from a USO tour in Iraq when the Kongo bout was proposed and the Mir fight was scratched when the former champion was tapped to coach on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).

Gonzaga and McCully share strengths (jiu-jitsu), which makes this a tough fight for McCully. That’s because Gonzaga more than likely has the tighter ground game, as well as marked edge in the stand up.

But as we all know anything can and often does happen in mixed martial arts. That’s the reason the fighters fight in the fights.

UFC Quick Quote: Karo Parisyan is a gatekeeper?

Posted: 03 Jun 2008 09:25 AM CDT

karo parisyan

“Karo Parisyan is kind of like the gatekeeper of the division….”

– UFC President Dana White last night referred to one of the top welterweights in the sport, Karo Parisyan, as a gatekeeper for the 170-pound division during the “UFC Countdown” to 85 hour-long special on Spike TV. White was talking about how impressive it was that Thiago Alves was able to take him out UFC Fight Night 13 and get a crack at Matt Hughes in the main event at “Bedlam” this Saturday in London, England. Perhaps White has a different definition of gatekeeper, but in most circles that is not necessarily a desirable distinction — especially for a fighter who was supposedly knocking on the door to a title shot before the loss and has just three losses in 11 attempts inside the Octagon.
