UFC tickets for fight night special on July 19 on sale today (Friday)

Posted: 19 Jun 2008 10:46 PM CDT

ufc tickets
Tickets for UFC Fight Night 14, which was announced and put together in record time, will be available to purchase during an exclusive presale that begins at 1 p.m. ET today (Friday, June 20) for the July 19 event at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

get ufc ticketsUFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva will take on James Irvin in a light heavyweight showdown slated for the main event. No title will be at stake — “The Spider” is merely testing the 205-pound waters since he has all but cleared out the 185-pound division.

Here are the UFC Fight Night 14 tickets sale details:

UFC Fight Club presale: Friday, June 20 at 1 p.m. ET
General ticket sale: Saturday, June 21 at 4 p.m. ET

(UFC Fight Night 14 tickets can be purchased through StubHub.com. Note: StubHub often has seats available even if the event is “sold out”).

There is likely no newsletter presale because of the abbreviated time to market the Spike TV special. The promotion worked its magic to put together a card on super short notice to counter the debut of Affliction: “Banned” on pay-per-view (PPV) the same night.

It’s perhaps a blow to the upstart organization but a boon to MMA fans — get those DVRs programmed sooner rather than later.

In addition to the bout between Silva and Irvin, lightweights Frank Edgar and Hermes Franca will go to war on the televised main card, as well as light heavyweights Brandon Vera and Reese Andy. It should be a good show made even better by the fact that it’s free.

‘MMA Legacy’ casting call for new reality series

Posted: 19 Jun 2008 10:00 PM CDT

mma legacy
Big John McCarthy’s Ultimate Training Academy in Valencia, Calif., will host an open casting call on Monday, June 22 at 1 p.m. local time for a new reality show titled, “MMA Legacy.”

The idea behind the show is to give fans a behind the scenes look at the day-to-day lives of the people involved in mixed martial arts, whether it’s established up-and coming fighters, models and ring girls, and anyone else involved with the business side of the sport.

Jason Chambers — the host of the History Channel’s reality show “Human Weapon” — will be the executive producer of the show. Here are his thoughts on what exactly they’re looking for at the casting call:

"This isn't a competitive fight show like 'The Ultimate Fighter' where fighters compete for a fight contract, it's a personality driven show about people with MMA as a backdrop that provides a common thread. We need interesting people with engaging personalities because we'll be following them around for three to four weeks to capture their story. We intend to show them at work, on dates, as well as training.”

Sounds interesting.

Owned Entertainment, Jac’d Productions and International MMA Expo are the masterminds behind this concept. You will need a current photo of yourself as well as a completed audition application if you intend to appear at the casting call.

Joe Riggs vs Luke Stewart Strikeforce fight booked with Shonie Carter hurt

Posted: 19 Jun 2008 09:44 PM CDT

joe riggs luke stewart strikeforce
Shonie Carter has been forced to withdraw from his welterweight fight against Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Luke Stewart at Strikeforce: “Melendez vs. Thomson” at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on June 27, according to Sherdog.com.

“Mr. International” was apparently still willing to take the fight after shattering one of his knuckles during training, but was skeptical that the California State Athletic Commission would permit him to compete with the injury.

Filling in for the flamboyant Carter will be none other than former UFC fighter Joe Riggs (27-10).

“Diesel” has quietly competed three times since losing via knockout to Diego Sanchez in the first round at Ultimate Fight Night 7 in December 2006. During those three contests Riggs has gone 2-1 with the lone loss coming in February of this year to Cory Devela at Strikeforce At The Dome.

However, that fight was stopped after Riggs was thrown by Devela and suffered an injury to his back. In fact, Riggs underwent surgery on his back prior to that fight, but was apparently still having problems.

He has since had a second surgery to repair the damage to his spinal cord and appears fit and ready to go.

Riggs’ two wins during that same span have been against decent but not stellar competition. He beat Dan Chambers (13-7) with a triangle choke in the first round at a Hardcore Fighting Championships event, as well as Eugene Jackson (15-8-1) with a first round knockout during the Strikeforce show held at the Playboy Mansion last September.

Riggs has been competing at middleweight, and since he’s taking this fight on short notice, Luke Stewart has agreed to fight at a catch weight of 178 pounds.

Riggs is a much bigger and more powerful fighter than Carter, and it’s admirable for Stewart to accept a fight against a much different opponent than he’s been training for with just a little more than a week before the show.

This is, however, a huge opportunity for Stewart to show the fans watching on HDNet that he is a real contender in the world of professional mixed martial arts. He’ll surely have to apply his jiu-jitsu skills to avoid losing his second fight in a row.

It’s a classic striker vs. grappler match … and it should be a solid complement to the main event between Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson.

Megadeth to perform at Affliction ‘Banned’ event at Honda Center

Quoteworthy:

“… heavy metal band Megadeth, led by frontman, guitarist, and songwriter Dave Mustaine, will be performing live at the event. The platinum selling band, Megadeth has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and will electrify the audience with a special highlight performance. Known for their distinctive, in-your-face guitar solos, snarling vocal style and dark lyrical themes, Megadeth is sure to resonate with the “Affliction Banned” fan base and intensify the already action-packed event.”

Dare I say a “Symphony of Destruction” will take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on July 19? Couldn’t resist. Perhaps the Earth “starts to rumble.” Ok … enough.
