WEC 51 bonuses and awards for 'Aldo vs Gamburyan' on Versus

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 09:38 PM PDT

WEC 51: "Aldo vs. Gamburyan" from the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado, is officially in the books, which means that a couple of fighters who busted their asses inside the cage are getting rewarded for it.

The promotion is cutting checks for $10,000 to each fight bonus recipient -- the same as WEC 49 and WEC 50 -- but a far cry from the 65k doled out after the "Aldo vs. Faber" (A.K.A. WEC 48) pay-per-view back in April.

In addition to their base salaries, the WEC awarded lightweight brawlers Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner "Fight of the Night" for their thrilling, back-and-forth war of attrition that "Cowboy" took via unanimous decision.

Former lightweight and "Ultimate Fighter" George Roop likely prolonged his WEC employment with a vicious head kick, earning "Knockout of the Night" by sending Chan Sung Jung on a weekend cruise with Rip Van Winkle.

It was the first time "The Korean Zombie" has been stopped in his career.

Finally, former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres got back into the win column after securing "Submission of the Night" against Charlie Valencia. The rear naked choke snapped Torres' two-fight losing streak.

Here are the special fight bonuses for WEC 51:

Fight of the NightDonald Cerrone vs. Jamie Varner
Knockout of the Night — George Roop
Submission of the Night — Miguel Torres

Again, each fighter received $10,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as they're made available

WEC 51 results recap from last night for 'Aldo vs Gamburyan'

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 09:15 PM PDT

Wec51-recap_medium

WEC 51: "Aldo vs. Gamburyan" has come to a close from the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado, and Jose Aldo's reign over the featherweight division will continue.

The feared Brazilian striker turned in another dominating performance, this time over ex-UFC fighter and TUF 5 finalist Manny Gamburyan.

The challenger came out looking to trade strikes with the champ in the early going, and once again Aldo showed why that is never a good idea. "Junior" brutalized and frustrated Gamburyan with a series of leg kicks in the first round that hurt just watching.

Manny came out looking for takedowns in the second round, and who could blame him? However, the champ was ready for that attack, too, and he started lighting the Armenian up with counter punches and short uppercuts when he would shoot in. It was a second uppercut that eventually dropped the challenger early in the second round, and it didn't take long for Aldo to pounce and finish him off from there.

This was the second title defense and eighth win overall inside the WEC cage for the Brazilian, and he gets better every time we see him. He was as impressive as ever tonight, and there doesn't appear to be anyone in the WEC who can stop the twenty-four year old phenom.

That belt may be his for a long time.

In the co-main event, Arizona Combat Sports trainee Jamie Varner and Greg Jackson pupil Donald Cerrone met up in a rematch of bitter rivals. Their first encounter ended in controversy as Varner was awarded a split decision after he was unable to continue following an illegal strike from Cerrone in the fifth round.

There would be no controversy on this night.

"Cowboy" surprised Varner with takedowns and then came through on his feet with a quality stand up attack in what turned out to be a dominating one-sided decision victory. Varner hung tough and got off with some power punches, but he was clearly surprised by Cerrone's gameplan and he never got comfortable in the fight.

Perhaps Mr. Jackson deserves some credit for the gameplan, but Cerrone's execution is was what won him the fight. He didn't waste anytime jumping on Varner early and he kept up a fast pace for the full fifteen minutes. He wasn't successful with every takedown attempt, but he did manage to put "C-4" on his back enough times to keep the former champion guessing when he was on his feet.

There was a brief moment of respect shown before the start of the third round when the two fighters tapped gloves, but immediately after the final bell they were right back to their old tricks.

In his post fight interview Cerrone offered a potential rubber match to Varner in his home state of Arizona, and there's no doubt in my mind that the WEC will eventually set that one up. So far they're two for two with quality fights, why not make it a trilogy?

Former bantamweight king Miguel Torres came into tonight on the heels of dropping back to back fights for the first time in his career. It's safe to say he need a win badly.

He got one.

Charlie Valencia was the sacrificial lamb. He had no answer for the former champ's 76 inch reach, and he spent most of the fight circling away from jabs and trying to land power shots.

Torres made it look easy, methodically picking his opponent apart from the outside. He would go on to knock Valencia down for the second time in the fight midway through the second round, and from there he quickly went to work with his crafty submission game.

Valencia was forced into giving up his back and within seconds Torres had him tapping out to a rear naked choke. It was exactly the kind of win Torres needed to show the WEC fans and bantamweight fighters that he is still a force in the division. After the fight he reminded everybody that he is still only 29 years old with plenty of room to improve.

That's a scary thought.

South Korean import Chan Sung Jung had a lot to live up to coming into tonight's fight against TUF 8 alum George Roop after debuting for the promotion back in April with a "fight of the year" worthy performance in a loss to Leonard Garcia.

Unfortunately for the "Korean Zombie," he would not only fall short of living up to those expectations, but he would also find himself on the losing end for the second straight time.

Roop used his reach advantage to keep Jung at a distance and minimize the damage he could do with his explosive combinations. Nearing the midway point in the second round, Roop found his opening, perfectly timing a counter head kick right on Jung's knockout button.

The Korean crumbled like a ton of bricks and Roop came away with the first win of his WEC career in highlight reel fashion.

Jung's counterpart in that memorable battle from WEC 48 was also in action tonight, as Garcia took on 28 year old Canadian Mark Hominick in the opening fight of the Versus telecast.

And like Jung, Garcia would come up short on the night.

"The Machine" worked the Greg Jackson product over with jabs and counter hooks for most of the fight, out-boxing the former number one contender en route to a split decision victory. I didn't think the fight was as close as the final score suggests, but Garcia stayed game throughout the three rounds and slung enough punches to impress at least one of the three judges.

Regardless of the score, though, Hominick was the victor, and the win makes three in a row for the talented Canuck.

In undercard action, American Top Team trainee and ex-featherweight champion Mike Thomas Brown did all he could to erase the memory of a knockout loss to Gamburyan back in April by making quick work of Cole Province with a first round technical knockout.

Chris "The Polish Hammer" Horodecki and Chinese mixed martial arts standout Tiequan Zhang were also victorious on the undercard, defeating Ed Ratcliff and Pablo Garza, respectively.

For our blow-by-blow coverage of the main card click here.

Next up for the promotion is a return trip to "Sin City" for WEC 52: "Faber vs. Mizugaki" on November 11.

Former featherweight title holder Urijah "The California Kid" Faber will headline the card in his debut fight as a bantamweight opposite former number one contender Takaya Mizugaki. Josh Grispi, Brian Bowles, Eddie Wineland, Damacio Page and others will also be in action.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on that developing fight card.

UFC 127: Vitor Belfort confirms Feb. 5 title fight against Anderson Silva

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 08:40 PM PDT

Silvabelfort_medium

Word on the Tweet is that Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has finally decided on a date for the long overdue middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort.

"The Phenom" indicated a date of Feb. 5 via his Twitter account, which puts their 185-pound dance at UFC 127 during Superbowl weekend.

And to think, it almost wasn't meant to be (again).

The Brazilian submitted to chronic shoulder pain earlier this year, opting for surgery instead of a UFC 112 title fight. After "The Spider" danced the night away against Demian Maia in Abu Dhabi, Chael Sonnen stepped in for the recuperating Belfort and nearly crushed Silva before tapping out in the fifth and final frame.

In fact, the performance was so dominant, UFC President Dana White promised an immediate rematch, and slotted a now-healthy Belfort against Yushin Okami at UFC 122.

Then the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) came along and levied charges of drug use against Sonnen, effectively benching him for one year (or until his appeal is heard) following his UFC 117 career performance.

Enter Nate Marquardt.

After a "Great" performance against Rousimar Palhares on Sept. 15, Marquardt relieved Belfort of his duties in Germany and will now face "Thunder" for the chance to challenge the winner of the UFC 127 title fight.

It seems the division may finally be working itself out.

The Phenom hasn't competed since a first round destruction of former division champ Rich Franklin back in Sept. 2009. The stoppage — coupled with his two devastating knockout wins under the Affliction banner — were enough to convince White that "The Old Vitor" is back and ready to face his fellow countryman.

It's a tall order, considering Silva hasn't really lost in more than five years (sans a disqualification loss to Okami at Rumble on the Rock 8), and he's essentially obliterated the middleweight division since entering the Zuffa fold in mid 2006.

In fact, he's been so good (pre-Sonnen) that White and Co. started matching him up against 205-pound fighters to give him more of a challenge. He passed with flying colors, sending former champion Forrest Griffin running for the hills and pasting James Irvin with a highlight-reel, fighting-ending combination.

However, Silva has not had a solid (perhaps trademark is a better term) performance in the middleweight division since he submitted Dan Henderson at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" back in March 2008. He's had two forgettable -- albeit winning -- fights against Patrick Cote and Thales Leites since that time followed by the travesty against Maia and of course, the clinic by Sonnen.

It's safe to say that the promotion is looking to Belfort to bring the excitement back to the middleweight division ... win, lose or draw.

Can these two make it to Feb. 5 without getting hurt? Keep 'em crossed Maniacs. Early predictions?

Anthony Pettis talks MTV's 'World of Jenks' documentary show

And you might be surprised by who "Showtime" beat out to get on the show:

"The WEC recommended a couple fighters to MTV, had a couple guys send in tapes, and they chose me out of I think four other guys. I know Urijah Faber was one of them, I forget who else ... Jenks said my show was one of the best they did. They followed me for about 12 days. One of my closest friends, Pat Barry, and I were talking about the show and what wold happen if I got knocked out in the WEC and then it aired on MTV. Luckily it didn't end up that way. I haven't had a better knockout than that my whole career. It couldn't have gone better."

Newly-named WEC lightweight title contender Anthony Pettis has had a pretty good week. A couple days after being told he'd be challenging Ben Henderson for 155-pound gold, more than two million people tuned in to MTV's "World of Jenks," a show that documented the lead up to his fight with Danny Castillo at WEC 47. "Showtime" told Larry Pepe on Pro MMA Radio that he actually got the nod over WEC poster boy Urijah Faber to be filmed. Thoughts on the show? Despite the incorrect spelling of Pat Berry, er, Barry, did you enjoy it? Any newfound Pettis fans out there?

UFC 119: 'Mir vs Cro Cop' nabs $1,588,163 at the gate with 13,783 tickets sold on Sep. 25

Ept_sports_mma_experts-868951710-1285480537_medium

The UFC 119 pay-per-view event took in a live gate of $1,588,163 on September 25 from the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, according to official figures released today by the Indiana Gaming Commission per MMA Weekly.

The final attendance of 15,811 was a result of 13,783 tickets sold and 2,028 comped tickets. These numbers equate to an average ticket price of $115.23.

UFC 119 will likely be remembered as one of the promotion's least entertaining shows due to the lackluster main event between Frank Mir and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, a fight that saw Mir KO the Croatian with just a minute left in the final frame after the two heavyweights fought to a virtual stalemate prior to the finish.

UFC Quick Quote: George Sotiropoulos should beware of the flying wrench

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 09:56 AM PDT

Sotiropoulos-wrench_medium

"George is a monster with impressive wins over Kurt Pellegrino and Joe Stevenson. He has good boxing and REALLY slick Jiu-Jitsu. He uses a lot of rubber guard from the bottom and is absolutely relentless from the top with his passing. I think he is going to be bigger than me as well, as he was on The Ultimate Fighter at 170 before dropping down to 155. While I am sure I will be the underdog going into this one, I like how my skills match off with George’s. There has been talk about George getting a title shot in Australia if he wins his next fight, but I am going to throw a wrench in those plans. I’m the underdog, with an uphill battle coming and big plans for the other guy after he beats me… but I am good at ruining those kinds of plans. Getting some Deja Vu of the Jens Pulver fight camp already ... The UFC countdown show is coming out to film today… so you will hopefully get to see some of the stuff I have been doing."

Resurgent UFC Lightweight Joe Lauzon (via The Underground), fresh off a first round ass kicking over Gabe Ruediger in front of his Beantown Boys back at UFC 118, will be heading into his UFC 123 scrap against George Sotiropoulos on Nov. 20 in the suburbs of Detroit with bad intentions. Can the Aussie become 155-pound champ? Not if "J-Lau" can help it.

DEEP 50: Shinya Aoki vs Yokthai Sithoar set for Oct. 24 in Tokyo

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 09:16 AM PDT

Aokicalvan450_medium

It's boxing vs mixed martial arts all over again.

Dream Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki will meet former WBA Super Flyweight Champion Yokthai Sithoar at DEEP 50 on Oct. 24. The organization confirmed the bout at a recent press conference (via Chris Nelson).

The event will celebrate the 10 year anniversary of DEEP.

After suffering defeat in his U.S. debut to Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez back in April, "The Tobikan Judan" went back to Japan and claimed back-to-back victories. Aoki submitted Tatsuya Kawajiri at Dream 15 in July and defeated Marcus Aurelio by decision at Dream 16 in September.

Sithoar, a former WBA boxing champion, will be making his mixed martial arts debut in this bout.

The former Thailand boxer racked up a 29-6-3 record with 18 KOs as a pro. Sithoar retired from boxing in 2004 after going 0-3-2 in his last five fights, leaving the sport without a win since early 2003.

DEEP 50 takes place from the JCB Hall in Tokyo, Japan, on Oct. 24.

WEC 51: Reed Harris 'excited to see what happens' in Tiequan Zhang's debut

... and tells Greg Beacham at USA Today that "The Mongolian Wolf" could be the first of many Chinese born fighters to find their way into the Zuffa promotion.

"I see China in the same place as we were in the U.S. back in the late '90s, where this thing is kind of gaining some steam and picking up, and these shows are starting to do better ... I'm a realist, and coming into the WEC or the UFC is certainly a huge step in a guy's career. We'll see how he does. Sean (Shelby's) report from China is he's very well-rounded, a really good striker, good on the ground. He's got the record, but we have to see what his level of competition was. I'm excited to see what happens."

So does the undefeated (11-0) China Top Team product live up to the hype? The promotion is aggressively pursuing China as a hotbed for up-and-coming fighters, creating a Chinese language UFC website as well as scouting possible Ultimate Fighter (TUF) locations. But if Zhang goes belly-up in his debut against Pablo Garza, will it give the promotion buyer's remorse and perhaps take some of the luster off a potential far east expansion?

Ross Pearson to undergo surgery for torn knee cartilage

Ross-pearson_medium_medium

Ross Pearson will have surgery in two weeks.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 9 winner not only suffered defeat in his last bout with fellow reality show graduate Cole Miller, he also tore the cartilage in his knee during the 155-pound scrap.

"The Real Deal" is expected to be out of action until at least Spring 2011. While the Brit tore his knee during the fight, Pearson tells Fighter's Only it's no excuse for losing to "Magrinho."

"I think it tore when he pulled guard on me. After that I was really heavy-footed and I lost my movement. I am not using that as an excuse though, Cole Miller beat me fair and square. I didn’t want to mention it at all but now I am having an operation I suppose it would come out sooner or later."

Before being defeated for the first time in his UFC career back on Sept. 15, Pearson was a perfect 3-0 inside the Octagon, defeating Aaron Riley at UFC 105 and Denis Siver at UFC Fight Night 21 after his debut win over Andre Winner at TUF 9 finale in June 2009.

UFC 120: Dan Hardy hoping he and 'Mike' Bisping can avoid a 'low point' in their careers on Oct. 16

Quoteworthy:

"I think [Bisping vs. Akiyama is] a tough fight. Akiyama came up against a Chris Leben who was on a roll, looking good and in shape already, and Akiyama wasn't able to show his best. It was still a great fight. I was there live and it was one of the best fights I've seen. He's a very tough fight for Mike, but having said that I'm very confident Mike will get the job done. There's no way somebody is going to come to London and put a beating on Mike in the main event. I'm confident in all my British team-mates. Mike will get the job done, John Hathaway's looking awesome. Fighting in London, all the Brits are going to bring their best. Nobody wants to get beaten in London, that's a low point of your career."

Former UFC welterweight number one contender Dan Hardy returns to the Octagon in front of a hometown crowd when he clashes with former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit at the upcoming UFC 120 event on Spike TV from the O2 Arena in London, England. "The Outlaw" is hoping for a Team UK sweep as the Brits defend their home turf, but will the likes of Condit and Yoshihiro Akiyama play spoiler? And is Hardy still a relevant contender in the 170-pound division? Or a flash in the pan who's going to get deep-fried by "The Natural Born Killer?"
