San Jose, Calif. (Oct. 4, 2010) – Lightweight star and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro will take on Justin "The Silverback" Wilcox of Cincinnati in the headlining fight of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event on Friday, Nov. 19, at Jackson Convention Complex in Jackson, Miss., LIVE on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT, (delayed on the West Coast).

In a featured televised bout, unbeaten lightweight Ryan Couture (1-0) will face an opponent to be determined. The son of legend Randy Couture won his STRIKEFORCE and MMA debut with a 1:15, first-round submission (triangle choke) over Lucas Stark last Aug. 13 on STRIKEFORCE Challengers.

Ribeiro (20-4) is a decorated submission expert and one of the top 155-pounders in MMA. He won the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championship four times, once as a purple belt in 1996 and three times as a black belt in consecutive years (1999-2001).

His 20 victories include 14 stoppages (12 by submission) and he has defeated, among others, such notable fighters as Joachim Hansen, Eiji Mitsuoka, and Mitsuhiro "The Endless Fighter" Ishida.

Ribeiro’s losses have come against some of the division’s most talented practitioners -- Tatsuya Kawajiri, Gesias "GZ" Cavalcante and, Shinya Aoki, in the DREAM Grand Prix finals July 20, 2009. Shortly thereafter, Ribeiro, 31, underwent successful eye surgery. He returned to the cage last May 15 and lost a controversial split decision to undefeated Lyle "Fancy Pants" Beerbohm in St. Louis, Mo.

Wilcox (9-3), a 31-year-old former NCAA wrestling star and bodybuilder, has won his last four starts. In his most recent outing on March 26, he registered a unanimous decision over Shamar Bailey at STRIKEFORCE Challengers in Fresno, Calif.

A member of San Jose, Calif.’s Team AKA, one of the most fearsome fight teams in the world, Wilcox wrestled for Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where he befriended teammate Josh Koscheck, who turned his college wrestling buddy on to MMA and eventually brought Wilcox into the AKA family.

Wilcox’ first most noteworthy victory came on Aug. 30, 2008 when he scored a unanimous decision over Gabe Ruediger, a contestant on season 5 of Spike’s The Ultimate Fighter reality series.

The younger Couture is a member of the Las Vegas, Nev., based Xtreme Couture fight team. Before impressively winning his pro debut, the 28-year-old compiled an amateur record of 5-1-1 with all five wins coming by submission.

Couture, whose parents split up when he was in the sixth grade, spent his high school years in suburban Seattle. With his father being a former wrestling coach at Oklahoma State University, Couture naturally developed into a talented high school wrestler.

Following high school, Couture enrolled in Western Washington University in Bellingham, where he graduated in 2004 with a mathematics degree. He worked at a local bank until he realized his desire to work in the family business. Couture began MMA training in 2006, working diligently to mature into a well-rounded fighter, adding Muay Thai and a dangerous submission game to his repertoire.

In January 2008, he moved to Las Vegas to train with his father. He has had access to a who’s who of MMA royalty as training partners and coaches, which, coupled with a solid amateur career, has given him the background and confidence to take his fight career to the next level.

The Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight card presented by Rockstar Energy Drink will mark STRIKEFORCE’s initial foray into the state of Mississippi.

UFC Quick Quote: Brendan Schaub is tired of fighting fat wrestlers

Posted: 04 Oct 2010 05:57 PM PDT

Schaub-wins_medium

"If you count my fight on 'The Ultimate Fighter' with Roy Nelson, some people count that as my first UFC fight. Roy's a tough, tough guy, and you know, I lost that one and I learned a little bit. That was the longest fight I've had and so I got a little bit of experience in that. And then these last two, man, I haven't learned much. I've spent under two minutes total in those fights, and you walk away from them and I'm just so unsatisfied, man. I don't go in there expecting to finish those guys really quick - it's just happened. Right now, they got me on that Carwin track. You know, he beat two guys, knocked them out really quick, and then he got Gabe Gonzaga. So, am I ready for it? No doubt. I can compete with, I think, anyone in the top five in the world. As far as growing and becoming a better fighter, man, everyone has their plan. I can definitely beat Gabe. If I fight to my highest ability and he fights to his highest, I beat him every time. So, that's the plan. You know, the 205 division, for example with Jon Jones, there's enough guys to build him up. They have tons of guys at certain levels. At heavyweight, man, who are they gonna give me? Another fat guy? I'm sick of fighting these fat wrestlers, man. I gotta be honest with you. I'm ready for a challenge and I think this is the right step. I'm sure as heck not gonna argue with it or put up a fight. It's such a great opportunity."

Up-and-coming heavyweight hopeful Brendan Schaub (6-1) will face yet another gargantuan challenger when he collides with Gabriel Gonzaga (11-5) for a super-sized slugfest at UFC 121 on Oct. 23 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The Denver native tells MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan (via BloodyElbow.com) that he's ready to take a major step up in competition to mark his territory in the heavyweight division and get into the title hunt. Anyone think he's got the skills to hang with a top five heavyweight? Or will "Napao" prevent him from ever getting there?

Quoteworthy:

“Everything is going very well ... The doctor wanted to see how my surgery went, and I was told that it’s OK. The surgery was actually a success. I’m very happy ... I will continue my rehabilitation, which has changed a bit now. I already do most of the leg, swimming, running. After a month, I think I’ll be back to train. I’m very motivated to get back to doing what I like best, which is fighting ... I must return at the beginning of next year, but I still don’t know who it’s going to be against ... Let’s see how my rehab goes. Hopefully, I’ll be back early next year. First, I want to take care of my knee and get back to 100 percent.”

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Mauricio Rua is confident that he'll be ready for a 2011 return once he fully recovers from surgery on his left knee. Though yet to be officially announced, "Shogun" is expected to defend his title against Rashad Evans upon his return; however, that could change depending on the Brazilian's rehab schedule. Anyone think this latest surgery will affect his reign as champion?

TUF 12 Finale: Bonnar vs Pokrajac and Grove vs Maia official for Dec. 4 in Las Vegas

Posted: 04 Oct 2010 10:08 AM PDT

Stephan_bonnar_ufc116_medium_medium

The ink is now dry on a couple of contracts written up for the upcoming season finale of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 12, as the UFC today announced Stephan Bonnar vs. Igor Pokrajac and Kendall Grove vs. Demian Maia for Dec. 4 in Las Vegas.

Bonnar (12-7), treading water after posting three consecutive losses, was able to get back into the win column with an emphatic win over fellow TUF veteran Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 110: "Nogueira vs. Velasquez" earlier this year.

"The American Psycho" earned "Fight of the Night" with his stoppage of "The Polish Experiment" and could slowly start to re-establish his presence in the UFC's light heavyweight division with another impressive performance in "Sin City" this December.

Standing in his way is Pokrajac (22-7), who also rebounded from consecutive losses when he choked out free-falling  veteran James Irvin at the UFC on Versus 2 event last month in San Diego.

It was his first win under the UFC banner after racking up eight straight W's overseas. No question that stopping Bonnar could be a one-way ticket to bigger and better things in 2011.

After posting three straight wins to start his UFC career, Kendall Grove (12-7) fell victim to inconsistency over the past couple of years, going 4-4 over the span of eight fights.

The Hawaiian was planished by Mark Munoz at UFC 112: "Invincible" earlier this year, but was able to rebound with a much-needed win over Goran Reljic, a split decision at UFC 116: "Lesnar vs. Carwin" back on July 3.

"Da Spyder" has never been short on talent, but by his own admission has battled with issues both inside and outside the cage. He'll need to be at 100-percent to overcome the crafty Maia, despite having a tremendous size and reach advantage.

Like Grove, the Brazilian was electric right out of the gate, stringing together consecutive victories following his Octagon debut -- until Nate Marquardt turned him inside out at UFC 102: "Couture vs Nogueira" back in 2009.

Maia would sandwich decision wins over Dan Miller and Mario Miranda around his memorable loss to Anderson Silva in Abu Dhabi last April.

Finishing Grove may be the catalyst to getting him back into title contention.

TUF 12 Finale will feature the top two finalists from this season going head-to-head for a "six-figure" contract and the right to be called "Ultimate Fighter." Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on the upcoming season finale as it becomes available.

The number of viewers making buys of WWE pay-per-view broadcasts has been falling for three years....

The number of viewers making buys of WWE pay-per-view broadcasts has been falling for three years. Over the same period, as the chart on this page shows, pay-per-view buys have trended up for the mixed martial-arts events of UFC. Pay-per-view is a high-margin business that contributes almost a fifth of WWE revenues but a bigger share of profits. (WWE) blames the weak pay-per-view showings on a weak economy, in which the $49.95 price of an event looms larger on cable bills.

Bellator 33 official fight card complete featuring 'Alvarez vs Huerta' on Oct. 21 in Philadelphia

Alvarez-huerta-2_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (September 27, 2010) -Bellator Fighting Championships today announced the official fight card for Bellator 33, which will take place at The Liacouras Center in Philadelphia on October 21st, marking the promotion's first trip to the city.

"We are thrilled to be bringing this World Class event to Philadelphia and to the Worlds," said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "On Oct. 21 we have a PPV-worthy super fight between Eddie Alvarez and Roger Huerta, a Welterweight World Title Fight between two of the sport's most exciting undefeated phenoms, and a host of local fighters on display. This event will be a party for anyone who calls themselves an MMA fan.

Headlining the card will be a highly anticipated lightweight Superfight battle between Philadelphia native and Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez and former UFC star Roger "El Matador" Huerta in one of the most anticipated MMA fights of the year.

In a fight worthy of main event billing, Bellator Season 2 Welterweight champ Ben "Funky" Askren takes on current Bellator Welterweight Champion Lyman "Cyborg" Good for the Bellator World Welterweight Championship. Askren, a 2008 U.S. Olympic wrestler, looks to continue his prolific rise through the MMA ranks and capture his first title while Good hopes to secure hist first title defense.

In Featherweight action, Bellator veteran and World Jiu-Jitsu Champion Wilson Reis battles dangerous WEC alum Deividas Taurosevicius. Reis, a Philadelphia transplant by way of Brazil, is looking for revenge after suffering a rare loss at Bellator 18. Reis lost by decision to countryman Patricio "Pitbull" Freire in the Season 2 semifinals and looks to get back on track against the experienced submission artist Taurosevicius. A jiu-jitsu instructor at three of Philadelphia's most prominent MMA schools (Daddis Fight Camps, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu United, and Tri-State), Reis is expected to have a large contingent of supporters on hand.

Philadelphia native and Jiu-Jitsu black belt Tim Carpenter fights IFL veteran and New York native Jamal "The Suit" Patterson in light heavyweight action. Carpenter trains at Balance Studios in Philadelphia under the renowned Migliarese brothers and owns a perfect 5-0 professional record.

Former WKA Muay Thai Champion Tuan Pham, who operates his own MMA academy in Center City Philadelphia called Fight Firm, takes on amateur wrestling standout Nick Cottone, who makes his training home at Daddis Fight Camps in downtown Philadelphia.

Two lightweights face off when Eduard Guedes out of Kurt Pellegrino's MMA Academy in New Jersey puts his undefeated 5-0 record on the line against UFC veteran and New Jersey native Chris "The Story" Liguori.

Local action continues with another of Pellegrino's top students, Lester Caslow, as he takes on Kenny "The Tooth Fairy" Foster, representing Team Bombsquad in Ithaca, New York. Rounding out the card will be Maryland native Lewis Cassner versus Francis Evans, a local Philadelphia promoter/fighter who is turning pro following an impressive 6-1 amateur career.

MMA Quick Quote: Why isn't Dan Henderson fighting on CBS?

Posted: 04 Oct 2010 06:44 AM PDT

Dan-henderson-ufc-mulisha-2_medium

"It wasn't [up to] me. I was wanting to get back in there pretty quickly, but I think part of the problem was CBS kind of a little bit faltering on their commitment to mixed martial arts, especially after the little escapade in the cage after my last fight on CBS. You know, I don't quite understand that and they're definitely still wanting to be involved in mixed martial arts and with Strikeforce, but I think they're just gonna take their time on it a little bit more. It is disappointing [to not fight on CBS again], and the fact that that could have been easily avoided with the guys not coming into the cage after my last fight. It just gave them an out. But I also think that if CBS had a big problem with it, they didn't need to put it on their Web site, didn't need to replay it a bunch of times. I don't know if they're trying to renegotiate or get a little bit more out of the door, but I think they're definitely still going to be on board. But that's kind of what they were waiting on. [Strikeforce] wanted me to be on the next CBS card and CBS took a while and finally [Strikeforce] just got tired of waiting. I thought I was going to fight two, three months ago, but that's the way it goes."

Sounds like the Strikeforce: "Nashville" post-fight melee gave CBS a reason to drag their feet on their commitment to broadcasting Strikeforce MMA. As Hendo told the MMA Hour, being forty in combat sports affords you little room to play "wait and see." Now the former UFC and PRIDE middleweight will lock horns with Renato Sobral this December on the Showtime network in a rematch from 2000. Does this old dog still have some new tricks? Or will "Babalu" send him to his second straight loss since defecting to San Jose?

Alistair Overeem chooses Tyrone Spong over Semmy Schilt for K-1 final 8 match up

Posted: 03 Oct 2010 10:09 PM PDT

Overeem1_medium

Friend or foe?

For Alistair Overeem, the decision was easy, opting to challenge Tyrone Spong in the next round of the 2010 K-1 Grand Prix Tournament rather than his Golden Glory teammate, Semmy Schilt.

The "Demolition Man" has trained alongside Schilt for more than seven years, and as he put it, fighting him would "be like sparring." In the process, Overeem has all but guaranteed that he will not face Schilt until he absolutely has to if both fighters advance to the final from different sides of the bracket.

And who can blame him.

Schilt, who is now set to face off against K-1 heavyweight champion Kyotaro, is nothing short of dominant in the K-1 arena, accumulating an above average record throughout his career. He's also the K-1 super heavyweight champion, as well as a four-time K-1 World Grand Prix winner.

But let's not look past Spong.

He looked very impressive in his decision win over Xtreme Couture's "Suger" Ray Sefo. He is much smaller then Overeem (210 pounds), but does boast a staggering record of 65-5-1-1 over his kickboxing career.

Expect fireworks.

Here are the final four match ups:
