Marcus Davis vs Ben Saunders set for UFC 106 on Nov. 21

davis_saunders_ufc106

Two well-known and popular welterweights will look to get back on the winning track at UFC 106 inside the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21.

MMAmania.com has learned that Marcus Davis will finally fight stateside for the first time in more than two years when he takes on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 alum, Ben Saunders, in what promises to be a hard-hitting 170-pound showdown.

“The Irish Hand Grenade” has been on the international circuit since a first round knockout win over Jason Tan at UFC 72: “Victory” in Belfast, Northern Ireland, back in June 2007. Since then he traveled to Birmingham, London (twice) and Newcastle, England; Dublin, Ireland; and Cologne, Germany, amassing a sold record (5-2) against stiff competition.

However, it was his most recent split decision loss to Dan Hardy that perhaps stings the most. He and “The Outlaw” went at it for three full rounds, with Hardy landing the more powerful strikes and Davis seemingly controlling most of the action. It could have gone either way, but in the end the judges gave the nod to the Brit.

He’ll likely be motivated more than ever to score a decisive win when he locks horns with “Killa B.”

Saunders was on a nice three-fight tear before Mike Swick gave him a reality check at UFC 99: “The Comeback” back in June. “Quick” lived up to his nickname when he unleashed a barrage of fight-ending strikes that put an end to Saunders’ hot streak in a second round flash.

He appeared outclassed or out of sorts — far from the beast who viciously beat down Brandon Wolff at UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” and submitted Ryan Thomas with a slick armbar at UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy.”

Davis is certainly another tough test to determine if Saunders is able to compete with the top dogs in a very crowded welterweight division.

UFC 106 will feature a main event heavyweight title bout between two absolute monsters as champion Brock Lesnar will look to defend his gold for the second time against his newest challenger, Shane Carwin. "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz is also set to make his return to the Octagon against UFC Hall of Famer, Mark Coleman, after spending nearly a year and a half on the sidelines.

Pity the fool: Rashad Evans will fight B.A. Baracus ‘after the New Year’

Quoteworthy:

“I am (going to fight Quinton), but not when I'm supposed to. He's kind of getting sidetracked taking other opportunities above fighting. They haven't nailed down any dates, but they did say it would happen after the new year. I think they we're waiting to speak with Quinton's guys to see when exactly he feels he should be ready. If it couldn't happen at all, I would definitely want to fight somebody else, but I know the UFC definitely has a lot invested in us fighting each other. It makes no sense for us to fight somebody else because then all that they have created is just a waste.”

Rashad Evans confirms that his fight against fellow former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will not take place at UFC 107 in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12 as planned. That’s because “Rampage” accepted a role as B.A. Baracus (the character made famous by Mr. T in the mid 1980s) in the upcoming feature film, the “A-Team.” UFC President Dana White was confident that he could resolve the situation, but it appears that Rampage’s production schedule was just too much to plan around. It’s something that White is more than likely very upset about, considering the promotion booked Memphis to ride Jackson’s coattails to success at the turnstiles. The promotion inserted a main event between its lightweight champion, BJ Penn, and number one division contender, Diego Sanchez. Problem solved or disappointed?

Dream 11: Gegard Mousasi scratched from ‘Super Hulk’ event on Oct. 6 with injury

Posted: 08 Sep 2009 04:57 PM PDT

mousasi

It appears that Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi will be forced to take a break from his busy schedule.

“The Dreamcatcher” has withdrawn from his bout against Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in the semifinals of the Dream 11: “Super Hulk” tournament on Oct. 6 with an undisclosed injury, according to Fighting and Entertainment Group (FEG) officials.

It’s possible that Mousasi injured his shoulder during an exhibition match with Fedor Emelianenko at M-1: “Breakthrough” a week and half ago. The promotion is currently on the hunt for a last-minute replacement with less than one month until the event takes place at the Yokohama Arena in Kanagawa, Japan

After capturing the DREAM Middleweight belt last year, Mousasi embarked on an ambitious 2009 campaign with a move to light heavyweight. In the preliminary round of the Super Hulk Tournament at DREAM 9, the 24 year-old Armenian/Dutch fighter easily dispatched of Mark Hunt with a first round submission.

And just last last month, he scored an emphatic victory over Renato “Babalu” Sobral in his American debut, demolishing the veteran grappler in 60 seconds to capture the Strikeforce’s 205-pound title.

In addition to the bout between Sokoudjou and the yet-to-be-named replacement for Mousasi, “Super Hulk” will also pit Hong-Man Choi and Ikuhisa Minowa in the other semifinal match. DREAM 11 will also feature the semifinal and final rounds of the featherweight tourney.

Stay tuned to MMAmania for further information regarding Mousasi and DREAM’s “Super Hulk” tournament.

UFC Quick Quote: Maybe Fedor Emelianenko ‘just wants to keep his perfect score’ outside the Octagon

Posted: 08 Sep 2009 04:08 PM PDT

Fedor punished

“I don’t know (why he didn’t sign with the UFC),” Filipovic said on the UFC 103 media conference call. “I like Fedor very much as a fighter and a man. To tell the truth, I don’t know him enough that I could say anything more…. I don’t know if somebody controls him, if he has the power to express his wishes to go wherever he wants. Maybe he has to do what some other people tell him to do. I don’t know. I don’t know the situation, but I really don’t understand his attitude. I really don’t know why he doesn’t want to enter the UFC…. I know the UFC offered him the best possible deal to date. They offered him much more than DREAM or Strikeforce can offer. I think he should (have taken) the shot, but what are his reasons? I don’t know. I don’t think he’s afraid of someone, but maybe he just wants to keep his perfect score. Maybe he thinks the competition in the UFC is too tough; I don’t know. I think he should come (to the UFC), but why is he not there? I don’t know. I respect his wishes, but I would definitely like to see him there.”

– Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic talks (via Canoe.ca) on today’s UFC 103: “Franklin vs. Belfort” media conference call about Fedor Emelianenko’s decision to sign with Strikeforce rather than compete under the UFC banner. Cro Cop and Emelianenko met in one of the most highly anticipated heavyweight fights at Pride 33: “Final Conflict” back in 2005. Emelianenko pressured the Croatian and kept him off balance for much of the bout to earn a clear-cut unanimous decision on the judges scorecards. That’s not to say Cro Cop didn’t have his moments (see post-fight picture above). It appeared that the pair was on a collision course to rematch one year later at Pride: “Final Conflict Absolute;” however, Emelianenko was forced out of the tournament because of an injury. It’s still a rematch that most mixed martial arts fans would like to see, but it may not happen anytime soon because of the different paths that they chose for their careers. Is there still any lingering hope — or desire — to see Emelianenko vs. Cro Cop 2 … or is that maybe too much of a risk for Emelianenko? Who knows. It appears that the only one who does is the man himself. And maybe that’s all that really matters.

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF 10) Finale: Jon Jones vs Matt Hamill possible for Dec. 5

Posted: 08 Sep 2009 02:26 PM PDT

There’s a potential “Battle of the Buffalo area” brewing for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 Finale in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Dec. 5, according to MMAMadness.com.

Iowa Central Community College national wrestling champion and undefeated blue chip MMA prospect, Jon Jones, is currently in talks to meet former TUF 3 alum and three–time Division III national wrestling champion from Rochester Institute of Technology, Matt Hamill.

Both fighters share similar strengths and ties to the upstate New York region. More on this 205-pound match up in a bit.

TUF 10 is scheduled to debut on Spike TV on Sept. 16, 2009, at 10 p.m. ET. Former Elite XC posterboy Kimbo Slice, as well as a former IFL champion Roy Nelson, several NFL players and others, will duke it out for a “six figure” UFC contract. It will be the first TUF season to feature heavyweights since the second season in late 2005.

Stay tuned.

Dan Hardy plans to make UFC welterweights uncomfortable on Nov. 14

Quoteworthy:

"Kim will want to take me down with his judo and bash me up on the ground, but every time he gets close he will eat an elbow or knee in the face. I don't want a decision, I guarantee a knockout in this one. I plan to put a beating on this guy that is so nasty and so one-sided it will be uncomfortable viewing for all the other welterweights in the UFC. I am going to beat him up for a while and then I will catch him with something that really hurts him — then he'll go to sleep.”

UFC welterweight Dan Hardy, fresh off his slugfest with Marcus Davis at UFC 99 in Cologne, Germany, looks to keep his momentum going when he battles Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 105 from the MEN Arena in Manchester, England on Nov. 14. “The Outlaw” has some pretty grisly plans for the Korean import — but can he back them up? Or will “Stun Gun” outdraw him in a stand-up duel?

UFC 105 tickets for MEN Arena in Manchester, England, for Nov. 14 on sale soon

Posted: 08 Sep 2009 10:04 AM PDT

Tickets for UFC 105, which is slated for the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14, will go on sale to the general public on Monday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. BST (5 a.m. ET).

UFC Fight Club members and UFC Newsletter subscribers, naturally, will be able to scoop up tickets prior to them being available for public consumption.

UFC 105 will be the first show held at the MEN Arena since UFC 70: "Nations Collide," which featured one of the sport's biggest upsets when Gabriel Gonzaga defeated Mirko Filipovic via crushing head kick.

With a main event still pending, the officially announced event is expected to feature hometown hero Michael "The Count" Bisping competing on the main card opposite Denis Kang.

Dan 'The Outlaw' Hardy and Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim are also scheduled to hook ‘em up.

Here is the UFC 105 tickets sales schedule (all times are BST):

UFC 105: Terry Etim vs Shannon Gugerty possible for Nov. 14

Posted: 07 Sep 2009 05:26 PM PDT

terry_etim

Unheralded but tough lightweights Terry Etim (13-2) and Shannon Gugerty (12-3) are penciled in to throw leather in a 155-pound match up at UFC 105 from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14, according to Fighter's Only magazine.

Etim has looked sharp in his three most recent performances inside the Octagon, submitting Justin Buchholz with a brabo choke at UFC 99: “The Comeback,” knocking Brian Cobb senseless with a head kick at UFC 95: “Sanchez vs. Stevenson” and outpointing Sam Stout on all three judges scorecards at UFC 89: “Bisping vs. Leben.”

The British product typically competes whenever the promotion ventures overseas. And he’s delivered the goods more often than not, winning four of six contests within the eight-sided cage since 2007.

He’ll look to make it four straight and five of his last seven when he locks horns with the City Boxing disciple. But don’t let the gym moniker fool you — Gugerty is fond of submissions. In fact, 75 percent of his 12 career wins have come by way of tapout.

Matt Grice was his most recent victim, succumbing to a first round guillotine choke at UFC 100: “Lesnar vs. Mir 2″ back in July. Gugerty has just one loss since 2006 courtesy of a Spencer Fisher triangle choke at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” late last year.

He made his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 14: "Silva vs. Irvin," submitting fellow newcomer Dale Hartt with a rear naked choke in round one.

UFC 105 has yet to be officially announced by the promotion; however, hometown hero Michael "The Count" Bisping is expected to compete in the co-main event opposite Denis Kang. To check out the latest fight card and rumors click here.

UFC Quick Quote: Frank Mir to add more strength to go with his technique

Posted: 07 Sep 2009 04:07 PM PDT

frank_mir

“In the fight with Brock, I really felt there was a huge difference in strength and power. Being 245, I just don’t think I’ll ever be able to compete with him at that weight…. One area of my game I’m really lacking at is physical power. Just training, lifting heavy weights, being explosive, being a powerful athlete…. I’m going to go back to drawing board, I’m going to win two, three fights in a row and get a rematch against him. And I don’t have to sit here and complain about it, I’ll get an opportunity to get locked in a cage with him and show him what I felt about [his post-fight antics].”

– Former heavyweight champion Frank Mir tells CageWriter.com that his superior technique was just no match for the strength and power of Brock Lesnar in their most recent encounter at UFC 100 back in July. Mir — who defeated Lesnar via first round submission in early 2008 — did not make it out of the second round in the rematch, getting pinned under the 280+-pound monster and overdosing on a huge helping of ham hocks. He was visibly in the best shape of his fighting career, tipping the scales at a lean 245 pounds. However, it just was not enough. Now he intends to change up his strength and conditioning program by enlisting the services of former U.S. strongman representative and UNLV strength coach, Mark Phillippi. He’ll get to put his improved power to the test when he takes on Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 on Dec. 12. Can Mir muscle his way back toward another crack at Lesnar in the near future or is the division now too stacked and wide open for it to happen anytime soon?

Gegard Mousasi: ‘Paulo Filho is a little donkey on steroids’

Quoteworthy:

“What happened when [Filho] came to America, he got beat up really bad. Now he’s back in Japan and he feels like a kid in a candy story. He can use all kinds of steroids and I think the steroids have gone to his head. He didn’t perform the same as he does in Japan as he does in America and now he suddenly has a big mouth again. I would say that he’s a little donkey on steroids. He thinks he’s a running horse but he’s more like a little pony. I really believe that he used steroids. He also backed out a couple of times when he had to fight Chael Sonnen. He said he was crazy. Maybe he is crazy, I don’t know. I think he wasn’t feeling very good mentally because he cannot use his magic stuff. I also fight in Japan and I don’t use anything. If there’s an athletic commission test, he can fight me everywhere, everywhere he wants.”

Newly crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi fires back at former WEC middleweight champion Paulo Filho, who offered to fight “The Dreamcatcher” for no salary just to prove that he’s no good. With a new-found alliance between DREAM and Strikeforce, could we possibly see these two settle their differences inside the ring? And if so, who takes it?

UFC 106: Dennis ‘Superman’ Hallman vs John ‘Doomsday’ Howard under consideration for Nov. 21

Posted: 07 Sep 2009 09:53 AM PDT

hallmanVShoward

After more than ten years and 50+ fights, MMAmania.com can confirm that mixed martial arts veteran Dennis Hallman has agreed to make his UFC return against up-and-coming welterweight John Howard at UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21.

Both “Superman” and “Doomsday” have verbally agreed to clash however, bout agreements have not yet been signed.

Hallman (41-12-2) is perhaps best known for quickly disposing of former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes — twice — when Hughes was considered to be in his prime.

After cutting off the oxygen at Extreme Challenge 21 back in 1998, the two met again at UFC 29 a little over two years later. As history has a way of repeating itself, Supes gave Mr. Country Breakfast another fight-ending submission to go up 2-0 on the farmboy.

Combined total in both fights: a brisk 0:37 seconds.

Unfortunately that success didn’t translate well to the rest of the UFC’s roster, as Hallman put up goose eggs in his next three Octagon appearances, finishing 1-3 during a span that ended courtesy of Jorge Rivera at UFC 55 back in 2005.

No question he’ll try to reverse course when he battles 170-pound prospect John Howard (12-4).

Dooms earned his shot in the big show courtesy of a solid record fighting in smaller shows throughout the Northeast such as Ring of Combat and Cage Fury Fighting Championships.

In his first trip to the Octagon, Howard outpointed the venerable Chris Wilson at UFC 94 on Jan. 31, earning "Fight of the Night" honors for the performance.

He followed that up by squeaking past Tamdan McCrory via split decision at UFC 101 back on August 8.

A win over the accomplished Hallman would go a long way towards getting him a serious step up in competition. Perhaps even the chance to end his verbal feud with Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

Gina Carano a ‘Knockout’ for Steven Soderbergh movie

… annnnnnd ACTION!

Strikeforce female fighting sensation Gina Carano hasn’t let a TKO drubbing at the hands of “Cyborg” Santos get in the way of her ever-increasing mainstream appeal.

According to Variety.com, the former face of women’s MMA will chop-socky her way onto the big screen courtesy of director Steven Soderbergh, who cast the bodacious beauty as a not-so-nice girl who uses her feminine ferocity to assault any neer-do-wells who happen to require a little Carano-style justice.

Think Sonya Blade with a bottle of Old English.

While “Conviction” is no stranger to fight fans, she also dazzled television audiences with her ability to clown hapless armchair athletes in the modernized version of “American Gladiators” on NBC.

In addition, the Muay Thai Mami has a small role in the upcoming Michael Jai White action film “Blood and Bone.”

Soderbergh is perhaps best known for his directorial efforts on “Ocean’s 11,” “Traffic” and “The Limey.”

Shooting is expected to begin in January 2010.

UFC 107: Thiago Alves vs Paulo Thiago on tap for Dec. 12

Posted: 07 Sep 2009 07:16 AM PDT

alves-thiago

After weeks of speculation, MMAmania.com can confirm that Brazilian welterweights Thiago Alves and Paulo Thiago will collide at UFC 107, set for the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 12.

And fans who hang on every word of UFC play-by-play man Mike Goldberg in search for the next big Goldie-ism are likely to find a king’s ransom.

“The Pitbull” is working his way back from a five-round unanimous decision loss to 170-pound kingpin Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100 back on July 11.

The defeat snapped a seven-fight win streak that saw him finish top-ranked opponents Matt Hughes and Karo Parisyan, as well as outpoint Josh Koscheck on all three judges scorecards at UFC 90 in October of 2008.

He was on a two-year tear, with five of those seven wins ending by way of (technical) knockout. Alves, in fact, had not lost since 2006, which was against another top fighter in the division, Jon Fitch.

Like his South American counterpart, Paulo Thiago also fought Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch — albeit to different results.

The Constrictor Team product stunned the division with a TKO stoppage over “Kos” at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson" in his Octagon debut last January.

Fitch, friend and training partner of Koscheck, was looking for revenge at UFC 100, where he handed Paulo the first defeat of his career.

In a move that seems almost like punishment, Thiago must now face his third top-ten welterweight in the span of a year when he tangles with an angry “Pitbull” in just a few months.

Deep waters for the Brazilian — it’s sink or swim this December.

UFC 107 is expected to feature a 155-pound bout between current lightweight champion BJ Penn and the hungrier-than-ever Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez, as well as a heavyweight showdown between former champion Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing fight card.

Mike Swick ’sorry’ for dropping out of UFC 103, hopes ‘to fight again soon’

“I am very sorry to the fans who were looking forward to this fight. I was very excited to come back home to Texas and fight in front my family, friends and fans. I am also sorry to the UFC, they have spent a lot of time promoting this fight. I am in great shape and will continue to train hoping to get an opportunity to fight again soon. I will post any updates on my Twitter page at Twitter.com/officialswick. I want to thank all the fans for their support. The emails and Tweets have been great and has made this unfortunate incident much easier to deal with.”

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum, Mike Swick, regrets being forced out of his Sept. 19 number one contender bout against Martin Kampmann at UFC 103 after suffering a concussion during training. The former middleweight has just one loss (Yushin Okami) in ten fights inside the Octagon dating back to 2005. Swick has certainly paid his dues — but how “Quick” can the Texan get back  into title contention now that “The Hitman” is moving forward against Paul “Semtex” Daley? Perhaps his Tweet about facing Matt Hughes holds the answer…

XFC 9 results and quick recap for ‘Evolution’

Posted: 06 Sep 2009 11:51 AM PDT

One of the true up-and-coming mixed martial arts promotions in the United States, Xtreme Fighting Championships (XFC), hosted the ninth event of its young history last night at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida.

XFC 9: “Evolution” aired live on HDNet, featuring a main event between UFC exile, “War Machine,” and two-time Elite XC veteran, Mikey Gomez.

Gomez came into the bout having lost three straight, including back-to-back defeats to Jesse Juarez on Bellator Fighting Championship cards. And he certainly didn’t find things any easier inside the XFC cage against “The Ultimate Fighter” 6 alum — the man formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver.

War Machine put an end to Gomez’s night early on in the third frame by finishing off the Orlando resident with a barrage of strikes. The win marked five in a row for the Undisputed Team Hurricane Awesome member since his last stop in the UFC’s Octagon in May of 2008 at UFC 84.

Each of those five victims tasted defeat before the final bell.

In the co-main event of the night, XFC bantamweight champion Jason Goodall dropped the first fight of his career when he was forced to tap out in the fourth round to a triangle choke from submissions expert and new XFC 135-pound champion, Pablo Alfonso.

Here are the full results from XFC 9: “Evolution:”

War Machine defeated Mikey Gomez via technical knockout (strikes) at 0:19 of round three
Pablo Alfonso defeated Jason Goodall via submission (triangle) at 2:40 of round four to become the new XFC bantamweight champion
Bruce Connors defeated Tim Synder via technical knockout (strikes) at 2:00 of round one
Julien Williams defeated Jeremy Thurlow via submission (guillotine) at 0:51 of round three
Nate Jolly defeated Frank Santore via unanimous decision
Chris Barnett defeated Daniel Perez via technical knockout (strikes) at 0:47 of round two
Gerardo Julio Gallegos defeated Hayder Hassan via technical knockout (strikes) at 0:57 of round one
Rey Trujillo defeated Shah Bobonis via split decision
Sean Bartlett defeated Jesse Benton via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:01 of round one

That’s it from the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa. Next up for the promotion is a trip across the pond to Berlin, Germany, for XFC 10 on Dec, 12. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more details on that card as we get closer.

Quoteworthy:

“The reason why I’m doing MMA is it’s probably the closest thing you can find to football as far as conditioning, cardiovascular and the physical aspect. I’m not going to be fighting and I’m not going to be getting hit. I’m just going to be training my behind off…. I want to come back the way I left — in shape and focused.”

New York Jets outside linebacker, Calvin Pace, will turn to X-Treme Couture in Las Vegas, Nevada, to stay fit while he serves a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing supplements. The 6′ 4,” 265-pound monster will by joined suspended Saints defensive linemen Will Smith and Charles Grant. Pace, Smith and Grant won’t be allowed back on the gridiron until Oct. 10, giving them more than a month of intense training under “The Natural” before heading back to work. Pretty cool. Feel free to share any NFL or MMA related thoughts in the comments section below … Week one is right around the corner.
