Bellator Fighting Championships V results and quick recap

Posted: 01 May 2009 11:37 PM PDT

The championship fight of Bellator Fighting Championship’s eight man lightweight tournament is now set following the conclusion of the two semifinal match ups earlier tonight from the Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

One of the two men who will be mixing it up in that final round won’t come as much of a surprise to anyone, as the pride of Philadelphia mixed martial arts, Eddie Alvarez, dispatched a game Eric Reynolds with a third round submission in the main event of Bellator V.

Alvarez utilized a strong ground and pound attack throughout the fight, easily taking dominant positions when on the ground and landing violent strikes from there. The Fight Factory product had his opponent fully mounted a number of times, but the hard nosed Reynolds somehow stayed competitive and fought his way through the first two rounds.

In the third, however, Alvarez was finally able to finish the fight. Reynolds was clearly worn down from the first two rounds, and this time he was unable to fight off the relentless tournament favorite. Eddie stuck to his gameplan, taking the fight to the mat once again. This time, though, he didn’t take the mount position. Instead he worked his way onto Reynolds’ back, and from there it was only a matter of time before he sunk in the fight ending rear naked choke.

The other tournament favorite, Jorge Masvidal, was forced to deal with a little bit more difficult of an opponent than Alvarez though. Toby Imada came ready to scrap tonight. He took everything that “Gamebred” could throw at him for the first two rounds, and it looked like Masvidal was on his way to a clear cut decision victory.

But the resilient Imada had other plans.

Battered and bloodied from the punishment laid down from the superb striking of Masvidal through the first two rounds, Imada hung in there and finally found an opening he could capitalize on late in the third frame. With less than two minutes left in his tournament life, the Los Angeles resident took the American Top Team fighter’s back and locked in a sick triangle choke from a standing position. Masvidal tried to fight his way out, but he quickly fell into unconsciousness, bringing an end to his tournament run.

It will now be the tournament favorite Eddie Alvarez versus the tournament dark horse Toby Imada locking horns for the first ever Bellator lightweight tournament title sometime in the next seven weeks. And if tonight’s action was any indication as to how that fight’s going to play out, we should be prepared for an all out war.

In the featured non-tournament bout of the night, former Elite XC heavyweight standout Dave Herman and the mammoth 263-pound Josh Barnes slugged it out for nearly a full round before “Pee Wee” put an end to the big man’s night with a brutal knee followed up by a barrage of strikes. With the win, the 24 year old Herman now moves his professional record to an impressive (14-1).

That card will feature the semifinal match ups from the 145-pound featherweight tournament. Former Elite XC champion Wilson Reis will square off against Joe “The Hammer” Soto for the right to face either Nick “The Ghost” Gonzalez or Estevan “El Terrible” Payan in the championship round.

Sengoku ‘Eighth Battle’ preview and predictions

Posted: 01 May 2009 12:22 PM PDT

World Victory Road is set to present Sengoku 'Eighth Battle' taking place on May 2 at the National Yoyogi Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

For fans in the North America it will be aired live early Saturday morning on HDNet at 3:00am ET. Should you miss it you'll be able to catch the replay at 9:00pm ET.

The card will play host to the promotions featherweight grand prix Tournament.

Hatsu Hioki, has been put to the task of facing the very formidable Ronnie Mann in what could promise to be a riveting ground war.

The often overlooked Michihiro Omigawa — who earned his spot in the quarterfinals by dominating and garnering a hard fought decision victory over L.C Davis (13-2) — will have another tough test when he faces the always dangerous Nam Phan.

Masanori Kanehara will collide with the explosive Jung Chan Sung. Kanehara would do best in trying to avoid getting in a slugfest with the Korean brawler if possible.

Featherweight King of Pancrase Marlon Sandro will do battle with heavy-handed Nick Denis, which should present an interesting styles clash when both fighters but their perfect records on the line come fight time.

In non-tournament action will be Japanese Olympic judo gold medalist Makoto Takimoto in a welterweight clash against Brazilian Michael Costa. And Kazunori Yokota will meet Leonardo Santos in what is being regarded as a title eliminator bout, with the winner likely facing Satoru Kitaoka (24-8-9) for the Sengoku Lightweight Championship sometime this summer.

Also set to be competing will be jiu-jitsu phenom Alexandre "Xande" Ribeiro who will take on veteran of the sport Keiichiro Yamamiya in a Light Heavyweight bout.

We've taken a closer look at the quarterfinal match ups from the Featherweight grand prix, to give you a taste of what to expect from the latest mixed martial arts offering.

Here we go:

Hatsu Hioki (18-3-2) vs. Ronnie Mann (17-1-1)

Backgrounds: Hatsu Hioki is the Tournament favourite and promotion poster boy and for good reason. He earned his name by firing off a handful of dominating victories through the small circuits such as Shooto. His last outing there was a beatdown on promotion legend Rumina Sato (24-13-2). That is when he would get the call up to the big leagues of Japan to represent Sengoku. He would make a big splash in his debut for the promotion when in the Featherweight grand prix opening round, he would end up defeating undefeated American Top Team (ATT) prospect Chris Manuel (6-1). Beating the ATT jiu-jitsu coach at his own game by submitting him with a triangle armbar in the very first round.

Mann on the other hand has also been very impressive in his own right. . In his opening round bout with Tetsuya Yamada (3-1) he would dictate most of the action and eventually go onto win a unanimous decision. Before that he had been turning out some great performances back home in his native Britain and is now presented with the opportunity to get his skills recognized further by fans. He has also adopted the ring name "Ushiwaka" which should help endear him to the Japanese crowd.

Prediction: While Mann is no doubt a formidable grappler, Hioki on the other hand is just that little bit better and that will be the deciding factor heading into this bout. I see Hioki keeping Mann at bay with his reach advantage and scoring takedowns when necessary. Hioki should be in cruise control from there, even though Mann is very scrappy Hioki should be able to keep him down and land some strikes from the top that may pressure Mann into a compromising position and in the process leave himself open and for the taking.

Final Prediction: Hatsu Hioki via submission in round two

Michihiro Omigawa (5-7-1) vs. Nam Phan (15-5)

Backgrounds: Korean judoka Michihiro Omigawa surprised a lot of people when he advanced into the next stages of the Featherweight grand prix when he was not only able to upset L.C. Davis (13-2) by winning but also controlled most of the bout and gained a hard earned unanimous decision victory. Omigawa also had some choice words after the fight for those who counted him out and expected him to lose. Don't let his record fool you, as it isn't very telling on his abilities. He has world class judo and actually trains under Japanese judo gold medalist Hidehiko Yoshida (8-7).

Though Omigawa's judo may be neutralised when he faces off with Nam Phan who is a very capable grappler. He also has a distinct advantage when it comes to the stand up. He put the rest of the Tournament participants on notice with a quick TKO destruction over Hideki Kadowaki (13-9-2) back at Sengoku 'Seventh Battle' in March. Demolishing him in the very first round. He originally fought at Lightweight (155lbs) though perhaps undersized he was still able to have plenty of success. However a step up in competition against the likes of Josh "The Punk" Thomson (16-2) and Gesias "JZ" Calvancante (14-2-1) saw him come out on the losing side. Which would lead and prompt a smart move down to Featherweight where he is more comfortable and rekindling that success he initially had as a Lightweight.

Prediction: Phan has the ability to finish a fight anywhere, no question about that. But with that said I feel that the majority of this fight will take place on the ground. With Omigawa doing enough to stay out of harms way but with Phan likely dominating from top position but without garnering a stoppage. I have this one going to the scorecards.

Final Prediction: Nam Phan via unanimous decision

Masanori Kanehara (12-5-5) vs. Chan Sung Jung (6-0)

Background: Masanori Kanehara is a ZST veteran and has a big experience factor heading into this fight with competing in 22 bouts compared to Jung's 6. He is the more technical of the 2 fighters though Sung's aggressiveness could pose some problems. He has been fighting since 2003 with varied success.

Chan Jung "The Korean Zombie" Sung is a young 22 year old stalwart who's fighting style is very explosive and certainly exciting to watch. He's always looking for the finish and usually gets it thanks to the knockout power he posses. Though his stand up is a little sloppy getting in a slugfest with him is a bad idea. His last bout he was able to land a barrage of strikes on Shintaro Ishiwatari (6-2-3) and took his back to lock in a rear naked choke to get the win.

Prediction: The key to victory in this one is if Kanehara can manage to survive the onslaught that Jung is likely to provide right from the get go. Even though Jung isn't all that technical with his striking, leaves himself open and vulnerable more often than not there is a method to his madness. He has some scary power in his hands and this has served him well so far in his short career. And if he can keep the pressure on Kanehara and not relent he should be able to add another W to his record. He can not give his opponent time to think, he has to be ruthless and look for the big finish right off the bat otherwise Kanehara will try to slow down the pace and look to pick at any openings Jung provides. The longer the fight goes on the more likely a Kanehara victory will be but I don't think Jung will let this one go on for all that long.

Final Prediction: Chan Sung Jung via TKO in round one

Marlon Sandro (13-0) vs. Nick Denis (7-0)

Backgrounds: Marlon Sandro is undefeated thus far in his career. He was able to catch the Featherweight King of Pancrase title last year when he bested Masaya Takita (9-11-2) to a decision at Pancrase 'Shining 9'. Now he looks to add the Sengoku Featherweight title to his collection. His last bout saw him submit Matt Jaggers (10-5) when he put in a standing arm triangle. Unable to escape and gasping for air he collapsed to the floor, forcing the referee to halt the bout. He is a experienced grappler fighting out of the famed Nova Uniao fight team.

His opponent Nick "The Ninja of Love" Denis couldn't be more different. He likes to engage in stand up wars which have seen him come out on the winning side every time and remain undefeated. He is a hard hitter and has some tremendous power in his hands. He will have a big advantage if he can keep this fight on the feet.

Prediction: Denis has dynamite power in his hands and his opponent likely knows this. Sandro will not be looking to engage in the stand up with Denis at all. If he does it could be lights out. He will be looking to utilise his wrestling to put Denis on his back and keep him there to likely grind out a decision. While Sandro could certainly pull off a submission and has stated that's what he's looking for in this fight his best bet is taking it slow and not taking too many risks.

Final Prediction: Marlon Sando via unanimous decision

Here is the official line-up for Sengoku 'Eighth Battle':

Featherweight GP Quarterfinals:
Hatsu Hioki (18-3-2) vs. Ronnie Mann (17-1-1)
Michihiro Omigawa (5-7-1) vs. Nam Phan (15-5)
Masanori Kanehara (12-5-5) vs. Chan Sung Jung (6-0)
Marlon Sandro (13-0) vs. Nick Denis (7-0)

Non-tournament bouts:
Travis Wiuff (54-12) vs. Stanislav Nedkov (5-0)
Alexandre Ribeiro (1-0) vs. Keiichiro Yamamiya (34-23-9)
Michael Costa (9-4) vs. Makoto Takimoto (4-5)
Kazunori Yokota (8-2-3) vs. Leonardo Santos (6-2)
Maximo Blanco (2-1-1) vs. Akihiko Mori (6-6-1)

Preliminary Card:

Liver shot: Hydroxycut recalled after FDA links supplement to liver damage and death

Posted: 01 May 2009 12:12 PM PDT

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to immediately stop using Hydroxycut products by Iovate Health Sciences Inc., of Oakville, Ontario and distributed by Iovate Health Sciences USA Inc. of Blasdell, N.Y. Some Hydroxycut products are associated with a number of serious liver injuries. Iovate has agreed to recall Hydroxycut products from the market.

The FDA has received 23 reports of serious health problems ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, an indicator of potential liver injury, to liver damage requiring liver transplant. One death due to liver failure has been reported to the FDA. Other health problems reported include seizures; cardiovascular disorders; and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems such as kidney failure.

Liver injury, although rare, was reported by patients at the doses of Hydroxycut recommended on the bottle. Symptoms of liver injury include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes) and brown urine. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, light-colored stools, excessive fatigue, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching, and loss of appetite.

"The FDA urges consumers to discontinue use of Hydroxycut products in order to avoid any undue risk. Adverse events are rare, but exist. Consumers should consult a physician or other health care professional if they are experiencing symptoms possibly associated with these products," said Linda Katz, M.D., interim chief medical officer of the FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

Hydroxycut products are dietary supplements that are marketed for weight-loss, as fat burners, as energy-enhancers, as low carb diet aids, and for water loss under the Iovate and MuscleTech brand names.

The list of products being recalled by Iovate currently includes:

Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
Hydroxycut 24
Hydroxycut Carb Control
Hydroxycut Natural

Although the FDA has not received reports of serious liver-related adverse reactions for all Hydroxycut products, Iovate has agreed to recall all the products listed above. Hydroxycut Cleanse and Hoodia products are not affected by the recall. Consumers who have any of the products involved in the recall are advised to stop using them and to return them to the place of purchase. The agency has not yet determined which ingredients, dosages, or other health-related factors may be associated with risks related to these Hydroxycut products. The products contain a variety of ingredients and herbal extracts.

Health care professionals and consumers are encouraged to report serious adverse events (side effects) or product quality problems with the use of these products to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online, by regular mail, fax or phone.

–Online:  www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm
–Regular Mail: Use FDA postage paid form 3500 found at:  www.fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm and mail to MedWatch, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787
–Fax: 800-FDA-0178
–Phone: 800-FDA-1088

The FDA continues to investigate the potential relationship between Hydroxycut dietary supplements and liver injury or other potentially serious side effects.

Lil’ Nog: Stop lying! Affliction is here to stay…

Posted: 01 May 2009 10:10 AM PDT

Props: Brasil Combate

Quoteworthy:

"A promotion that has Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya as an associate, and that might be making ties with HBO television, it is far from collapsing. Affliction has one of the richest men in the world and with a super cable network like HBO, it won't finish.  That's a lie. The event will still last a long time."

Current Affliction mercenary and former PRIDE FC light heavyweight standout Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (16-3) remains vehemently optimistic about the future of Affliction, despite inside talk that a third event from “The T-shirt guys” could be their last. Affliction Veep Tom Atencio plans to hold a show sometime in summer 2009; however, will not commit to a firm date, location or venue because nothing is official at this time. In the interim, Lil’ Nog will battle Dion Staring on May 9th at ‘Jungle Fight’ from his home turf in Brazil.

James Irvin in talks to replace Chael Sonnen at UFC 102 against Wilson Goveia

Posted: 01 May 2009 09:51 AM PDT

James Irvin, who was forced to withdraw from his UFC 98 bout against Drew McFedries due to injury, is in talks to fill in for Chael Sonnen at UFC 102 against American Top Team (ATT) standout Wilson Gouveia in a 185-pound affair set for the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Ore., on August 29, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Sonnen was yanked from the Portland event to fill in for a gimpy Yushin Okami against Dan Miller on May 23 in Las Vegas on a card that has been riddled with injuries and multiple roster changes.

Irvin (14-5) tested positive for Methadone and Oxymorphone after his first round technical knockout loss to Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19. "The Sandman" — who was nursing a broken foot just weeks before accepting the bout — claims that he used the banned substances to mask the pain associated with the injury.

He has a split record (4-4) in eight fights for the promotion.

Before the loss to Silva, Irvin rebounded from an injury-riddled and bizarre 2007 fight campaign, during which he blew out his knee in a loss to Thiago Silva and was knocked silly courtesy of an errant Luis Arthur Cane knee that resulted in a disqualification win, to knockout Houston Alexander in record time at UFC Fight Night 13 this April.

But the momentum was cut short once again in 2008. And he'll have to try get it going in 2009 against the dangerous Brazilian.

Gouveia (12-6) is also coming off a disappointing loss – Nate Marquardt went bananas on him in the third round of their fight at UFC 95, unleashing a sensational barrage of strikes from all different angles for which he had no answer.

It was a bout that could have propelled him to the front of the division title contender pack, which has all of a sudden become a rather crowded place. However, it just wasn't meant to be … for now.

Gouveia recently notched a submission win (armbar) over late replacement Ryan Jensen at UFC Fight Night 15 in his divisional debut back in September. He also smashed Jason MacDonald with vicious elbows at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 Finale to score an impressive first round technical knockout in Dec. 2008.

This will mark the fourth fight for Gouveia at middleweight. And with losses to top division players such as Marquardt and Goran Reljic, he will need to prove that he can hang with the big dogs when he collides with Irvin in late August.

UFC 102 is expected to feature a main event between Randy "The Natural" Couture (16-9) locking horns with Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira (31-5-1) in a dream match-up that most fans expected to see before Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir played spoiler roles in the opening round of the mini heavyweight tournament created in late 2008 to crown an undisputed division champion.

Also slated for the main card is perennial light heavyweight contender Keith Jardine (14-5-1) who has been tapped to replace Forrest Griffin in a 205-pound slugfest against hard-hitting Brazilian import Thiago Silva (13-1).

Sugar Rush: Rashad Evans is not Georges St. Pierre - and he’s okay with that

Posted: 01 May 2009 07:19 AM PDT

Quoteworthy:

"You know, with being champion, there's always stuff that's coming at you left and right, and you're like, damn, it didn't need to be like this. I wish it was like the old days. It is different, because you have all these expectations, people expect you to be this way, be that way. I just want to be myself. People say, Georges is like this as a champion. I'm not Georges, Georges is Georges. I don't need to be like him. Georges doing what he's doing and me doing what I'm doing are two different things. But it doesn't make either one of us less of a champion. I'm not going to add any pressure to myself to say [the fight with Lyoto Machida is] going to be this kind of fight or that kind of fight. I'm just going to go out there and fight my best. I really can't worry about what people are going to say if they're going to say it's a boring fight. There's always been harsh critics of me, saying this, that, and the other. If I listened to the fans every time, I wouldn't be where I am right now."

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans talks about the pressure of living up to fan expectations of what a champion should or should not be. A pretty tall order, considering he trains side-by-side with one of the world’s most popular fighters in Georges St. Pierre — making comparisons between the two inevitable. How he performs against challenger Lyoto Machida at UFC 98 when the two put their undefeated records on the line on May 23 could go a long way towards silencing the haters — who may have resisted his success because of his frequent showboating and sometimes less-than-exciting performances.
