UFC 98 bonuses and awards for ‘Evans vs Machida’ PPV fights

Posted: 24 May 2009 01:17 AM PDT

UFC 98: "Evans vs. Machida" from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, has officially wrapped, which means that it's time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $60,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 22 fighters on the card. And it shouldn't come as a shock whose wallets are leaving “Sin City” a little heavier.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded welterweight warriors Matt Hughes and Matt Serra "Fight of the Night" for their gritty back-and-forth 170-pound war. It was a bout that saw Hughes survive an early scare to come back and out-muscle Serra en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Both fighters certainly made the most of their opportunity.

Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida, who was an early favorite coming into this fight, shocked the pay-per-view audience with a devastating stoppage over previously unbeaten Rashad Evans.

It not only earned him "Knockout of the Night," but the dubious honor of being the first man to stop Evans in his career.

"Submission of the Night" went to WEC alum Brock Larson for his relatively quick work over last minute replacement Mike Pyle. Larson locked in a suffocating arm triangle choke to move himself up welterweight ladder..

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 98:

Fight of the Night — Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes

Knockout of the Night — Lyoto Machida

Submission of the Night – Brock Larson

Again, each fighter received $60,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

UFC 98 results from last night and recap for ‘Evans vs Machida’

Posted: 23 May 2009 09:38 PM PDT

UFC 98: “Evans vs. Machida” went off tonight (Saturday, May 23) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It was an interesting and exciting night of mixed martial arts to say the least.

The world light heavyweight title tilt between champion Rashad Evans and undefeated challenger Lyoto Machida was indeed, as Joe Rogan eloquently put it, a “battle of patience.”

But that all changed toward the end of round one when “The Dragon” exploded with a head kick-straight left combination that put “Sugar” on his back. Machida pounced, but Evans did not appear too badly hurt and was able get back to his feet.

He couldn’t say the same in the second round.

Machida clipped Evans with a straight left that had his legs involuntarily dancing. Machida kept his distance and continued to pummel Evans in the face. Evans was able to escape, but then the Brazilian tattooed him with a blistering series of punches that put Evans out cold.

Ice cold.

Holy shit is all I have to say — it was incredibly impressive to watch Machida do his thing. Evans has a great chin, but it was no match for the pin-point punching of Machida — when he engages and unloads, boy does he bring it.

Karate is back! And, in the process, perhaps the revolving door atop the 205-pound division will finally come to a stop.

The epic grudge match between the two former welterweight champions and mortal enemies, Matt Hughes and Matt Serra, started off crazy with Hughes getting hurt bad with an accidental head butt, which Serra followed up with strikes.

Hughes appeared to be done, but he was able to grab a leg and stay alive. In fact, he did more than just that — he came out in the second round and won it in typical Hughes fashion with a big takedown and ground and pound.

And it looked like the final frame was going to be more like the previous, but Serra was able to score a big takedown of his own with about two minutes left in regulation. It wasn’t enough — Hughes was able to win the three-round fight on all three judges scorecards.

It’s a bit puzzling how not one judge gave Serra the nod because it seemed much closer than the final outcome. Regardless, Hughes lives to fight another day, telling Joe Rogan after the bout that he intends to speak with UFC President Dana White about competing again soon.

Serra’s future, however, is not so clear — the Italian New Yorker all but ruled out a move to lightweight because of his affinity for pasta. Only time will tell how he fits in to the 170-pound mix moving forward.

Holy Foupas-Pokam!

Drew McFedries dropped the hammer right off the bat in this 185-pound battle of sluggers, putting “Professor X” on his butt early. He tried to weather the brutal barrage, but as he got to his wobbly feet “Massacre” blasted him with an evil uppercut.

McFedries continued the savage assault until the referee in charge of the action had no choice but to pull the rabid beast off his prey.

Mike Golderg said it best — WOW! It was only 37 seconds, but it was a damn impressive half-minute performance. It was painful to watch.

So, too, was the middleweight match between Chael Sonnen and Dan Miller, but for different reasons.

The submission-prone Sonnen survived an early scare from the New Jersey native, popping his head out of what appeared to be a very tight guillotine choke. From that point on he relied on his superior wrestling to take down Miller and beat him up on the ground, which lasted for just about three rounds.

It was a big win for the Team Quest fighter — he has struggled inside the Octagon. And taking a fight against a red-hot Miller — who had a 10-fight win streak ended tonight — on super short notice will go a long way toward getting him in the 185-pound title hunt once and for all.

Perhaps as soon as UFC 102 on August 8 in front of a hometown crowd … he deserves the chance.

In the opening fight of the main card telecast, former lightweight champion Sean Sherk had essentially no answer for the stand up attack of Frank Edgar. He was peppered with quick combos and straight power punches for 15 minutes straight.

Sherk 2.0 essentially shucked his wrestling once again with the exception of a powerful shot in the second round. And that’s very strange, considering Gray Maynard was able to impose his will on Edgar just one fight ago with relentless take downs.

Either Sherk believed he could win the fight upright or Edgar was just too quick and elusive for him to catch. Either way, he’ll have to go back to the drawing board and figure out how he can get back to the top sooner rather than later … he’s no getting any younger.

On the flip side, Edgar returns from a loss (and a severe knee injury) to score a huge win over a very capable opponent. He more than likely leapfrogged a few folks in the very crowded lightweight division tonight with a very impressive showing.

UFC Quick Quote: Sean Sherk has left the building

Posted: 23 May 2009 09:30 PM PDT

“Sean sherk ran out of the ring and out the doors and down the street in his fight shorts and no shirt.”

– UFC President Dana White Tweets that former lightweight champion Sean Sherk bolted from the Octagon and into the streets of Las Vegas following his unanimous decision loss to Frank Edgar this evening at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. “The Muscle Shark” eventually returned to the venue to submit his post-fight urinalysis. If he didn’t, Sherk would have been in major trouble from the Nevada State Athletic Commission … and perhaps local authorities.

Paul Daley vs Jay Hieron possible at third Affliction event rumored for August 1

Posted: 23 May 2009 11:31 AM PDT

A fantastic welterweight match up between the last reigning Cage Rage and International Fight League (IFL) 170-pound champions, Paul “Semtex” Daley (21-8-2) and Jay “The Thoroughbred” Hieron (17-4), has been added to the Affliction 3 card, rumored for August 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. according to MMAFanhouse.

Hieron is currently enjoying a five fight winning streak, including his most recent first round knockout win over the previously unbeaten Jason High on the Affliction: “Day of Reckoning” card back in January.

The Xtreme Couture trainee was a staple under the now defunct IFL, fighting nine times for the promotion in a span of just under two years. Since then, however, “The Thoroughbred” has only been in action twice, defeating High earlier this year and also out-pointing Chris Kennedy en route to a unanimous decision victory at a “Super Fights MMA” event last October.

Hieron was rumored to be facing Nick Diaz on the upcoming Strikeforce event on June 6, but the promotion instead ended up booking Scott Smith as Diaz’s opponent for the event. Still, that’s a fight Hieron obviously would have loved to have.

He was part of KJ Noons corner the night he and Diaz had that melee in the cage following KJ’s technical knockout win over Yves Edwards at Elite XC: “Return of the King.” There’s even video footage of Hieron throwing a punch at the Cesar Gracie-trained black belt.

With this announcement, that fight’s on the back burner for the time being, but Strikeforce has big plans for its welterweight division. A fight between Hieron and Diaz is likely not too far away.

For Semtex, he’ll be stepping into this fight having won his last two contests after dropping two out of three to Nick “The Goat” Thompson and Jake Shields prior to that. He’s a dynamite striker who owns a 76% knockout rate, having stopped 16 of his 21 victims with strikes.

The Nottingham, England native holds notable career wins over Xavier Foupa-Pokam, Duane Ludwig, John Allesio, Mark Weir and others.

The third event for “The T-shirt guys” has not been officially announced by the organization, but it’s expected to be headlined by WAMMA heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko, defending his strap against the current number one contender (under the WAMMA rankings) and one time UFC champ Josh “The Babyface Assassin” Barnett.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on Affliction 3 and its developing fight card.

Jose Canseco plans to submit Hong Man Choi at Dream 9

Posted: 23 May 2009 08:47 AM PDT

Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up:

"I don't even know whether my punches can reach Choi's head or not. While having a tight defense and using my footwork well to move around, I will take him down and end it on the ground with a submission."

Former Major League Baseball slugger and self-admitted steroid abuser, Jose Canseco, arrives in Japan for his upcoming showdown with 7' 2" kickboxing gargantuan, Hong Man Choi, at DREAM 9, which will take place from the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama on May 26. Canseco has virtually zero mixed martial arts experience, making his inclusion in the “Super Hulk” tournament even more bizarre. He recently reached out to Frank Trigg for a few pointers, but “Twinkle Toes” recently told Gabriel Morency on Hardcore Sports Radio (Sirius channel 98) that he thinks Canseco is a “rat” who “just wants to get paid.” Sounds about right.
