UFC 98 medical suspensions and injuries

Posted: 26 May 2009 05:30 PM PDT

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 98: "Evans vs. Machida," which took place on Saturday, May 23 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With several of the bouts ending early, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged follow up visits with their doctors, including Rashad Evans — who was put to sleep by an assault courtesy of Lyoto Machida — and Sean Sherk — who was outstruck for three rounds by Frank Edgar.

Xavier Foupa-Pokam will also need to give his melon a rest after Drew McFedries pounded on it en route to a brutal first round technical knockout. And Andre Gusmao didn't get off easy either after going limp against Krzysztof Soszynski.

Here is the complete list of UFC 98 injuries and their medical instructions:

Rashad Evans: Suspended until July 23 with no contact until July 8.
Drew McFedries: Suspended until December 10 unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor following an X-ray on his right wrist.
Xavier Foupa-Pokam: Suspended until July 8 with no contact until June 23.
Sean Sherk: Suspended until July 8 with no contact until June 23.
Patrick Barry: Suspended until June 23 with no contact until June 14 or until December 10 unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor following an X-ray on his right foot.
Phillipe Nover: Suspended until June 23 with no contact until June 14.
Kyle Bradley: Suspended until December 10 unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor following an X-ray on his right hand.
Andre Gusmao: Suspended until July 23 with no contact until July 8.
Dave Kaplan: Suspended until June 23 with no contact until June 14.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Strikeforce Challengers: Cory Devela vs Luke Rockhold set for June 19

Posted: 26 May 2009 05:29 PM PDT

NEW YORK (May 26, 2009)-Rising stars Cory “The One” Devela (9-2) and Luke Rockhold (4-1) will face off with each other in a middleweight (185 pound) battle at the Strikeforce Challengers mixed martial arts (MMA) event at the ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington on Friday, June 19.

“I feel like a million bucks,” said the 24-year-old Devela, one of the sport’s most promising young talents who hails from Bonney Lake, Washington and is a member of the Dennis “Superman” Hallman led Team Victory that has pioneered a hybrid fighting style dubbed “Cowboy Karate.” “I know he’s mostly a submission guy and I’m strong at that so it should be a great fight.”

Devela notched his best victory to date before a home crowd when he scored a TKO over former UFC star Joe “Diesel” Riggs in the first round of their Strikeforce matchup at Tacoma, Washington’s Tacoma Dome on February 28, 2008. After earning a unanimous decision over his next opponent, however, Devela suffered a setback when he was suddenly stopped by Terry Martin with an overhand punch in the third round of their Strikeforce matchup at the world-famous Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, California on September 20, 2008.

The matchup with Rockhold will be Devela’s first since the loss to Martin.

“I just want to show people that my win against Joe Riggs wasn’t a fluke and that I should have beaten Terry Martin and that I’m a power to be reckoned with,” said Devela.

“I was probably getting a little too cocky and not taking my training as hard as I needed to. I was doing well (against Martin) and I just got caught. That fight helped me get my head back in the game and train harder and realize where I want to be.”

Also 24 years of age, Rockhold, a native of Santa Cruz, California and a member of Team AKA, one of the country’s most fearsome fight squads, has proven to be a dangerous force on the mat, submitting each of his four victims to date within one round of battle. In his last effort, a meeting with Buck Meredith on the Strikeforce: “Shamrock vs. Diaz” preliminary card on Saturday, April 11, Rockhold forced Meredith to tap out from a rear naked choke at the 4:07 mark of the opening round.

“I didn’t take too much time off after that fight. I stayed in shape and this is one of the best training camps I’ve had so far,” said Rockhold, who holds a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. After taking up judo as an adolescent, he went on to excel in high school wrestling competition, capturing first place in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League and eventually reaching the California State Championships.

Towards the end of his high school career, though, Rockhold began to gravitate towards Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the combat art that utilizes choke holds and joint locks to finish opponents.

“I really liked Jiu-Jitsu a lot more because it wasn’t just about putting a guy on his back and pinning him,” explained Rockhold. “It allowed me to finish people using my whole body in every which way.”

Tickets for the Strikeforce Challengers event, priced from $32, are on sale at the ShoWare Center Box Office (253-856-6999 or 877-840-0457), online at ShoWareCenter.com, and at www.strikeforce.com .

The live SHOWTIME telecast of the event will begin at 11 p.m. ET/PT (tape delayed on the west coast) and will include up to five bouts.

Middleweight powerhouses “Smokin” Joey Villasenor (26-6) and Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos (16-12) will face off in the card’s main event.

Decorated United States Army Ranger Tim Kennedy (9-2) will square off with seasoned veteran Nick “The Goat” Thompson (38-10-1) in another middleweight contest.

Also enlisted for the event, thus far, are lightweight (155 pound) fan-favorite Jorge Gurgel (12-5) and welterweight (170 pound) submission ace Dennis “Superman” Hallman (40-12-2). Their opponents have not yet been confirmed.

Strikeforce’s affair at the Tacoma Dome marked the largest live gate in the history of any boxing, MMA, or kickboxing event in Washington State.

ShoWare Center doors will open for the Strikeforce Challengers event at 5:30 p.m. PT on June 19 and the first preliminary bout will begin at 6 p.m. PT.

Strikeforce Challengers is a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters. It provides today’s top prospects with the opportunity to step-up their level of competition and demonstrate their ability in a nationally televised event.

UFC Quick Quote: Mark Coleman matches up with Lyoto Machida ‘perfectly’

Posted: 26 May 2009 05:10 PM PDT

“I've been training hard with [Ernest “The Cat” Miller] and I feel confident that I know what his weaknesses are, and how I can exploit them should we meet in the cage. In my past fights I relied on my wrestling too much and it showed. Now I know that the key is good cardio and a sound stand up game, which I have now. I don't think Machida has faced a wrestler of my caliber before and I think stylistically I match up with him perfectly”

Mark Coleman — the "Godfather" of the ground and pound, collegiate national wrestling champion for Ohio State University and wrestler for the 1992 United States Olympic team — talks to Latest MMA News Now about being the man who can solve the riddle that is Lyoto Machida. Perhaps “The Hammer” has been pounding too many nails, because he still has to get past Stephan Bonnar at UFC 100 before he can face Machida — or anyone else for that matter. Then again he does have “The Cat” in his corner…

KJ Noons down for a return to MMA and a rematch with Nick Diaz

Posted: 26 May 2009 04:32 PM PDT

Props: Watch Kalib Run

Quoteworthy:

“Scott (Coker) and I have been talking the past few days. I used to fight on Scott’s fight cards in San Jose ten years ago, so I’ve known him a long time … I never said I was giving up MMA, I just enjoy competing in both sports, I boxed since I was a kid and just love to box. I love MMA also, I’m just going back and forth. There is some bad blood, drama, and history between [me and Nick Diaz], so I think people would want to see it again. I’m down for it. I want to fight anybody that people think is an interesting fight. I don’t mind going up or down in weight. I’ll train hard and fight hard for the fans.”

Former EliteXC Lightweight Champion KJ Noons, who was forced to turn down a fight against Josh Thompson on April 11 due to previous boxing commitments, talks about negotiating his return to MMA with Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. Noons also states that he’s willing to fight anyone the fans deem interesting. If that’s the case, I think there are a lot of fans clamoring for a rematch with Nick Diaz in the near future. Diaz lost to Noons back in 2007 via TKO due to cuts - and Diaz has since had surgery to correct that area of his face that was so easily opened. Noons vs. Diaz II — who ya’ got?

Fedor Emelianenko vs Josh Barnett confirmed for Affliction 3 on Aug. 1

Posted: 26 May 2009 01:14 PM PDT

fedor affliction press conference

"Yes sir."

Short and sweet language spoken by Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio earlier today when he confirmed with MMAmania.com that his heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko (30-1-1), will defend his title once again when he faces another former UFC champion and top world-ranked talent, Josh Barnett (24-5).

The long-awaited heavyweight fight will finally happen at Affliction's third venture, which is set to go down at the Honda Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 1, 2009.

There has been a lot of talk over the years that both fighters were avoiding meeting in the center of the ring because of the friendship that the pair forged during their years fighting overseas under the Pride FC banner. It appears, however, that the showdown was inevitable — they are the last two men standing under the Affliction banner atop their respective division.

Emelianenko is coming off his dramatic win against Andrei Arlovski at Affliction's second show – Day of Reckoning. The “Russian Cyborg” looked almost human for the first minute and a half as “The Pitbull” peppered him at will with his sound boxing skills.

That all ended in a sudden thud, however, when the Belarusian got a little too aggressive and attempted a flying knee, which Emelianenko countered with overhand right to the chin that put Arlovski out for the count.

As for Barnett, he last competed against Gilbert Yvel at "Day of Reckoning" on the same card as Emelianenko vs. Arlovski. While his win was mostly one sided, Barnett was visibly tired half-way through the fight and was repeatedly ineffective until the he was able to finish the fight via submission (strikes) in the third and final round.

It was not the kind of performance that will likely give Barnett fans much confidence going into his fight with Emelianenko. Regardless, his match up with Emelianenko is years in the making, which could make Affliction 3 the most successful (and memorable) event for the promotion to date.

In other Affliction 3 news, Atencio confirmed the fight card will feature a fight between Gegard Mousasi and Vitor Belfort; however, Belfort's contract is not yet finalized. Nonetheless, assuming the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed, the fight has been green lit by Atencio.

The ink has also dried on contracts for Paul Buentello, Jay Hieron and Dan Lauzon to compete at Affliction 3. Buentello is rumored to fight Tim Sylvia, but there was no confirmation for Buentello's opponent. The same goes for Jay Hieron and Dan Lauzon — their rumored opponents, Paul "Semtex" Daily and Chris Horodecki, respectively — are lined up but not yet final.

Here is the current rumored/confirmed line up for Affliction 3:

WAMMA heavyweight title fight:
Champ Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett

Undetermined weight-class:
Vitor Belfort vs. Gegard Mousasi*

Heavyweight fight:
Paul Buentello vs. TBA

Welterweight fight:
Paul Daley vs. Jay Hieron*

Lightweight fight:
Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon*

*pending contracts being signed by Belfort, Daley, and Horodecki.

That's it for now. Look for more fights to be added as we get closer to Aug. 1. For more on Affliction click here.

For example, the UFC often hands out extra cash for "Fight of the Night," "Knockout of the Night" and "Submission of the Night." To check out these figures for UFC 98 go here.

The total base fighter payroll for the blockbuster pay-per-view (PPV) event, which attracted an unofficial crowd of nearly 13,000 attendees and a solid gate of $3.4 million, was $957,000.

Shinya Aoki vs. Vitor Ribeiro fight planned for DREAM 10 on July 20

Posted: 26 May 2009 10:26 AM PDT

Shinya Aoki
WAMMA Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki (20-4) is set to collide with Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro (20-2) at DREAM 10 from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on July 20, in what should turn out to be quite a grappling demonstration.

The top-ranked lightweight fighter in the world, Aoki is a submission wizard who holds wins over Eddie Alvarez, Gesias Cavalcante and Joachim Hansen among others. He's a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Yuki Nakai, as well as a Judo black belt.

Aoki — who is also the Shooto middleweight (168 pounds) champion — last saw action at DREAM 8 on April 5, 2009, when he moved up in weight to enter the Welterweight Grand Prix (170 pounds) in a first round matchup against Hayato Sakurai. The fight was actually a rematch from 2005 when "Mach" won via unanimous decision. At DREAM 8, the result was the same, only it took considerably less time — just 27 seconds — for "Mach" to pound out the TKO victory.

"Tobikan Judan" (aka, "Master of Flying Submissions") then met WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko in a five-minute exhibition grappling match. "The Last Emperor" secured an Achilles lock just before the end of the match to secure the tap from Aoki.

Aoki now looks to bounce back against an opponent in his own weight class — and one who won't be afraid to go to the ground with him.

An accomplished grappler, Ribeiro is a four-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion with 11 submission victories in mixed martial arts (MMA) to his credit. The Brazilian holds a win over Joachim Hansen and most recently over former Olympic wrestler Katsuhiko Nagata at DREAM 8 in April 2009 via TKO (doctor stoppage). The event marked Ribeiro's return to MMA after an 18-month absence.

Prior to the Nagata win, "Shaolin" lost in quick fashion (35 seconds) to Gesias Cavalcante via TKO in a September 2007 K-1 Hero's event. Despite the loss, Ribeiro is considered a dangerous veteran who has fought all over the world for organizations like Shooto Japan, Shooto Hawaii, Rumble on the Rock, Cage Rage and K-1 Hero's. He is a former Shooto welterweight (154 pounds) champion, as well as a Cage Rage world lightweight champion.

The fight replaces a previously scheduled lightweight title bout between Aoki and Joachim Hansen, which has apparently been scrapped altogether.

DREAM 10 will also feature the final two rounds of the promotion's Welterweight Grand Prix tournament, which was created in a bid to crown a 168-pound champion. Hayato "Mach" Sakurai will fight Marius Zaromskis, while Andre Galvao will fight Jason High.

Here is the current line-up for DREAM 10:

WAMMA Lightweight Title:
Shinya Aoki (20-4) vs. Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro

Welterweight Grand Prix Semifinals:
Andre Galvao (3-0) vs. Jason High (7-1)
Hayato Sakurai (35-8-2) vs. Marius Zaromskis (9-2)

Welterweight Grand Prix Final:
Andre Galvao (3-0) or Jason High (7-1) vs. Hayato Sakurai (35-8-2) or Marius Zaromskis (9-2)

Non-tournament bouts:
Andre Amade (6-3) vs. Katsunori Kikuno (11-1)
Melvin Manhoef vs. Paulo Filho

That's it for now. Look for more fights to be added as we get closer to July 20. For more on DREAM click here.
