UFC Quick Quote: Sam Stout got a chance to prove he's not just a one-dimensional striker

"I've been trying to improve my game and become more of a well-rounded mixed martial artist. I did get a chance to show I'm not just a one-dimensional fighter who only knows how to strike. That was a great feeling for me and I'm really happy with my performance."

-- Sam Stout talks to the Canadian Press about his "Fight of the Night" against the returning Joe Lauzon at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" last night (Jan. 2) in Las Vegas. "Hands of Stone" has been active in the 155-pound division under the Zuffa banner since his debut at UFC 58: "USA vs. Canada" way back in March 2006 and is perhaps best known for his stand-up wars with Spencer "The King" Fisher. The Ontario native was on a mission to prove he was more than just a tough kid with good hands at last night's event. Did his award winning performance at "Evans vs. Silva" do enough to convince you?

"Great job Sam. You whooped my ass tonight. I thought I had the Kimura in the first round and thought it was over… but you had other plans. Your standup was crisp and your cardio was way better than mine. I could hear your corner calling out stuff and still couldn't deal with it. I am doing fine this morning. I have a pretty nasty canvas burn on my right knee from shooting in… but I feel okay otherwise. My left eye is a little swollen and my left leg feels like I was kicked about 50 times. Overall… I am doing alright. Great job Sam (the Fight of the Night bonus check is making my leg feel a LOT better, hah)."

UFC 108 victory creates probable grudge match for Rashad Evans against 'Rampage' Jackson in May 2010

Evans-vs-jackson_medium
Almost one year after Rashad Evans (14-1-1) and Quinton Jackson (30-7) first considered a potential Octagon throwdown, it may finally be time for some Rampage-coined "black-on-black crime."

"Suga" rebounded from a Brazilian ass-whooping at UFC 98: "Evans vs. Machida" back in May to outlast (and outwrestle) the dangerous Thiago Silva in the main event of UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" just last night (Jan. 2) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Following the win -- which UFC President Dana White insisted was critical for a future dance with Rampage -- White targeted a tentative May 2010 date for their clash (possibly in Montreal) during the UFC 108 post-fight press conference.

Of course, the Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 2 Champion was originally booked to settle his differences with the Tennessee native in the main event of UFC 107 on Dec. 12 following his return to the TUF franchise as a coach at war with Jackson in the heavyweight season populated with big bellies and behemothic beards.

Unfortunately Rampage didn't stick to the script.

That's because Jackson was cast as "B.A. Baracus" in the upcoming theatrical remake of "The A-Team," which filmed in Vancouver on a two month commitment, effectively preventing him from being fully prepared to compete in front of his hometown crowd (Memphis) for the first time ever inside the Octagon.

White blasted the former light heavyweight champion for bailing on the bout, which was understandable considering the entire season of TUF 10 was built around his Dec. 12 showdown with Evans -- and it wasn't the first time in 2009 that Jackson didn't play by the rules.

Remember that he passed on the opportunity try and pry the 205-pound title from newly-minted division kingpin, Lyoto Machida, opting to take on the recently dethroned "Suga" instead. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua happily stepped in for Jackson and battle the "Dragon" to a close unanimous decision loss at UFC 104 back on Oct. 24.

Fortunately White is willing to overlook his past difficulties with Jackson to cash in on a grudge match with Evans while there is still some relevancy to their feud. And considering their history, it won't take long for the trash-talking to get underway.

The question is whether or not Jackson will be prepared enough to face his adversary after being out of action for over a year.

Time will tell.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates on the pending Evans vs. Jackson feud as the develop.

ESPN teases Takanori Gomi vs Kenny Florian for UFC 'Fireball' debut

Former Pride FC lightweight champion and Japanese fighting deity Takanori Gomi (31-5) could jump right into the UFC 155-pound title hunt when he makes his UFC debut in 2010 -- which ESPNs "MMA Live" tweets could be against perennial contender Kenny "Kenflo" Florian (12-4).

When asked about the rumored mtach-up at the UFC 108 post-fight press conference, company President Dana White was expectedly non-committal in his "Could be" response.

Gomi recently signed a multi-fight deal to compete for the UFC after fighting exclusively for Japanese promotions.

In his heyday, the "Fireball Kid" was considered perhaps the best lightweight fighter on the planet. He has struggled recently, however, losing two of his last four matches to competition that is far from elite.

Nonetheless, Gomi is a fantastic and exciting addition to the talent-rich 155-pound class, which is currently dominated by division champion, B.J. Penn. Gomi and Penn actually went toe-to-toe at "Rumble on the Rock 4" back in 2003, with "The Prodigy" coming away with a convincing submission (rear naked choke) victory.

A rematch is a tantalizing prospect -- though don't expect "KenFlo" to ever let such a scenario materialize.

Florian has twice been to the mountaintop in the lightweight division -- and twice came away empty. To his credit, the Boston native always seems to come back stronger in his next fight, as evidenced by his second round destruction of the venerable Clay Guida back at UFC 107 on Dec. 12.

Quickly after the win, Florian expressed his desire to fight "top guys" every 3-4 months. A March or April contest would still give him enough room to prepare for a 155-pound superfight when the UFC debuts in Boston on August 28 of this year.

Imagine the fireworks for Florian vs. Gomi in "Beantown."

Of course, we may be putting the cart ahead of the horse, but if "MMA Live" has the inside scoop, the pending debut of "The Fireball Kid" could definitely be a memorable one.

Stay tuned.

It was a card that suffered endless injuries and endless ridicule. Did the fighters hold up their end of the bargain and deliver a pay-per-view worthy card?
