The athletes also will address students at Shamokin Area Middle/High School at 1 p.m. Thursday, and will participate in a special ceremony that will honor them as "honorary police officers" at the Coal Township Board of Commissioners meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday. After the meeting, the trio will head to Brewser's SportsGrille to continue spreading their message of eradicating drugs through education, hard work and setting an example for others.... Gembic said Shamokin Area Middle/High School Principal Chris Venna and other school district officials agreed to host the athletes' appearance at the school on Thursday afternoon. He also commended Coal Township commissioners and Coal Township police for taking an aggressive stance against illegal drug use in the area and for agreeing to grant Cook, Fitch and Koscheck "honorary police officer" status for their achievements and dedication in eradicating drugs through education."

The American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) trio has already returned to the San Jose, Calif., area to begin training for two big upcoming fights ... stinking badges and all.

UFC 112: Kendall Grove vs Mark Munoz booked for April 10

Posted: 18 Jan 2010 08:45 PM PST

Grove_munoz_112_medium

Middleweights Kendall Grove (11-6) and Mark Munoz (7-1) are set to do battle at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on April 10, 2010.

"Da Spyder" today announced the 185-pound showdown via Twitter.com, wishing the former NCAA national wrestling champion from Oklahoma State University a safe training camp and encouraging him to put on a good show.

And that should not be much of a concern for these two talented fighters.

Grove has won three of his last four fights, losing only to Brazilian jiu-jitsu wizard Ricardo Almeida via unanimous decision at UFC 101: "Declaration" in August 2009 during that span. The 6'6" Hawaiian most recently strangled another decorated wrestler, Jake Rosholt, via triangle choke at UFC 106: "Griffin vs. Ortiz" two months ago.

He likely won't have such an easy time against "The Philippine Wrecking Machine."

Munoz has been perfect (2-0) since his 185-pound debut against Nick Catone at UFC 102: "Couture vs. Nogueira" in August 2009. It wasn't a convincing win, however, earning a split decision nod from two of the three judges sitting ringside.

He didn't make the same mistake his next time out, smashing Ryan Jensen via verbal submission (punches) at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" earlier this year. Now Munoz will look to make it two straight against the dangerous and experienced The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 winner.

UFC 112 is expected to feature two world title fights, including middleweight champion Anderson Silva taking on Vitor Belfort and lightweight kingpin BJ Penn putting his belt on the line against Frank Edgar.

UFC president contemplates date change for UFC 113

Machida-punch_medium

Will there be another round of the putative boxing vs. MMA showdown?

According to multiple sources, UFC is reconsidering the May 1 date for UFC 113 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The rumor of a boxing superfight between Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley on the same day has come on the radar of UFC president, Dana White, who has told The Canadian Press about a possible schedule change.

The good news is that the venue is currently open every Saturday in May.

UFC 113 will feature a rematch between the light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. The two met previously at UFC 104 in a title bout and Machida defended the belt via controversial unanimous decision victory.

"My next fight against Shogun is scheduled for May 1st, but there is a possibility to change," Machida said via Twitter. "If it does I'll let you know through here."

The speculation of Mayweather-Mosley fight has been fueled by the news that Andre Berto has withdrawn from his Jan. 30 welterweight title bout in Las Vegas against Mosley, citing the recent disaster in Haiti where some of his family members reside.

The tentative line-up for the UFC 113 pay-per-view (PPV) broadcast is as follows:

Sam Stout vs. Jeremy Stephens
Patrick Cote vs. Alan Belcher
Marcus Davis vs. Jonathan Goulet
Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson vs. Matt Mitrione
Josh Koscheck vs. Paul Daley
Rashad Evans vs. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Lyoto Machida (UFC Light Heavyweight Champion)

UFC 113: Josh Koscheck vs Paul Daley co main event set for May 1

Posted: 18 Jan 2010 04:39 PM PST

Koscheck_daley_medium

Here we go!

British brawler Paul Daley will get his shot at the big time when he collides with perennial welterweight contender, Josh Koscheck, at the upcoming UFC 113 event from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 1, 2010.

"Kos" today confirmed the good news via Twitter.com, saying the electric 170-pound showdown will serve as the co main event of the major pay-per-view (PPV) event. And in all likelihood it will determine the next contender in a division stacked with talent.

Even before the stakes were raised with championship implications on the line, this one already had the ingredients for an explosive encounter inside the Octagon and out.

In fact, Daley has already insulted Koscheck, promising that he would "rock" the "Fraggle" if the pair ever touched 'em up, indicating that the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) standout resembles a 1980s-era Jim Henson character.

That's not a compliment.

Daley is as confident as they come and the heavy-handed welterweight striker has been able to back it up with two lethal performances since making his promotional debut.

He torched the title hopes of Martin Kampmann with a first round technical knockout at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" and then brutalized grappling whiz Dustin Hazelett at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" with a crushing knockout in hos most recent performance.

Koscheck, meanwhile, has been recovering for an injury that forced him out of a planned rematch against Paulo Thiago at UFC 109: "Relentless" next month.

He has gone on to score two impressive wins since the surprise loss to the Brazilian, stopping Frank Trigg via technical knockout at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" back in September and then choking out Anthony Johnson just last month at UFC 106: "Ortiz vs. Griffin 2."

A third straight win could have him -- or "Semtex" --knocking on the door of the winner of Georges St. Pierre vs. Dan Hardy.

UFC 113 features the much-anticipated rematch between 205-pound division champion, Lyoto Machida, defending his belt against fellow Brazilian Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the main event of the evening.

WEC 47: Leonard Garcia returns against Diego Nunes on March 6

Garcia_nunes_medium

World Extreme Cagefighting's (WEC) March event for this year is beginning to round out with the addition of two dynamic featherweights looking for redemption, as Diego Nunes and Leonard Garcia have verbally agreed to a featherweight bout at WEC 47, according to MMAWeekly.com.

Garcia is coming off a unanimous decision loss to the ever-improving Manny Gamburyan last Nov. at WEC 44: "Brown vs. Aldo." The former top contender to the 145-pound throne has not seen much success since dropping the title fight to Mike Brown at WEC 39 with the lone bright spot a narrow split-decision victory over Jameel Massouh at WEC 42.

Nunes, also a man looking to rebound from recent failure, will attempt to get back to his winning ways after dropping a unanimous decision to L.C. Davis, which was the first loss in his MMA career. "The Gun" had been on a two fight winning streak in the WEC and rising in the always competitive featherweight division.

The bout has "Fight of the Night" written all over it -- the two fighters are always game to throw down inside the Octagon. While a win does not escalate either fighter to contender status, a victory for either will be a huge step toward the top of a division ruled by champion Jose Aldo, along with former champions Urijah Faber and Mike Thomas Brown.

WEC 47 is set for Columbus, Ohio, on March 6, 2010. It will be headlined by a bantamweight title bout between champion Brian Bowles and top contender Dominick Cruz. Miguel Torres and Jens "Lil' Evil" Pulver are also featured on the card, as the two attempt to return to the winning ways they had become so accustomed to.

Stay tuned to MMAMania.com for breaking news and updates surrounding this blossoming card.

Diego Sanchez to move back to welterweight (170-pound) division

Posted: 18 Jan 2010 02:14 PM PST

Diego-swollen_medium

Well that was quick.

After just three fights in the lightweight division -- and one hellacious beat down courtesy of division champion BJ Penn -- it looks like Diego "The Nightmare" Sanchez is already thinking about going back to where he came from:

The 170-pound welterweight division.

From Twitter.com:

"YES IM GOING BACK TO WELTERWEIGHT IM LOVING MY NEW DIET.I WANT KOS OR FITCH BUT ANY TOP GUY WILL DO JUST WANT TO GIVE U FANS THE BEST FIGHT."

Sanchez, of course, is no stranger to the land of 170.

After winning the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" (TUF) as a middleweight, Sanchez swiftly dropped down to the lighter weight class, compiling an impressive record (8-2) with his only losses coming at the hands of top dogs Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck.

The reason for his possible return to 170 is up for debate, but maybe he feels that there is some unfinished business up north. Perhaps working toward a rematch with BJ Penn is not particularly enticing, either.

Regardless, he seems to have made up his mind. Is it the smart choice?

Gilbert Melendez: 'I think I could do better than a lot of guys do against B.J. Penn'

"B.J.'s on another level. [But] I think I could do better than a lot of guys do against B.J. A lot of guys sit back and want to last with B.J. I'd rather get knocked out in the center of the ring and go for it, than sit back and try to figure it out. If things aren't working, I'm going to charge B.J. and try to knock him out. It's better than just running away and not being able to engage."

Undisputed Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez compares himself to the recent crop of contenders in the UFC who have all tried (unsuccessfully) to dethrone current division deity BJ Penn. "El Nino" currently has his sights set on Japanese grappling phenom Shinya Aoki following his triumphant win over Josh Thomson in an action-packed war at Strikeforce: "Evolution" back on Dec. 19 -- but doesn't mind fantasy match-making with "The Prodigy." Anyone think Melendez has a chance to upset the Hawaiian should they ever cross paths?

Cheick Kongo vs Paul Buentello booked for UFC on Versus 1

Posted: 18 Jan 2010 11:44 AM PST

Kongo-buentello_medium
A battle of heavyweight strikers has been assembled for the upcoming UFC debut on the Versus network as Cheick Kongo (14-6-1)  faces Paul Buentello (27-11) at the The Odeum Colorado in Broomfield on Sunday, March 21.

The UFC confirmed the heavyweight tilt earlier today.

Kongo is undoubtedly hoping to erase the memories of his last performance after Frank Mir submitted him in the first round of their UFC 107 bout. It wasn't the submission that doesn't sit well with the Parisian -- it's the fact that Mir sent him ass over tin cups with a thundering left hand to set up the tap.

It was the second straight loss for the heavy-handed striker, who was positively mauled for three rounds by blue chip prospect Cain Velasquez at UFC 99 last May. It's not unreasonable to think that dropping three straight could bring an end to Kongo's once-promising UFC career.

Yet for Buentello it may only take two.

"The Headhunter" was picked from the rubble that was Affliction MMA after "The Tee-Shirt Guys" imploded under the weight of their own spending (among other things). Following a respectable 3-1 UFC tenure in 2005-06, Buentello returned to the Octagon at "Penn vs. Sanchez" on Dec. 12, dropping a close majority decision to Stefan Struve.

Apparently "Hightower" didn't fear the consequences -- though Buentello might if he's unable to get past Kongo this March. The UFC brass are notoriously unforgiving for 0-2 starts and it bears repeating they already chose not to hold on to him once before.

UFC on Versus 1 is set to feature a fantastic main event between dynamic light heavyweight strikers Brandon "The Truth" Vera and Jon "Bones" Jones. Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, John "Doomsday" Howard, Spencer "The King" Fisher and others are also expected to be in action on what is shaping up to be a great card for the promotion's debut on the cable network.

UFC 110 is going to be the return of Mr. Pride

“I believe the years of war inside the ring made Wanderlei know all the pathway of the adrenaline. Today, we drive this ancient and efficient style for what he does better, that is being himself inside the ring, and more important, do what made him the icon of the martial arts. I believe this is going to be the return of the Mr Pride. The work has been done for this reason and nothing will change its direction. Too many technique sessions, much information, a lot of attacks and defenses not only in Muay Thai, but regarding everything that can happen when mixed up. I’m very happy with this camping because we’re stressing specific workouts without forgetting his cardio. But I repeat, the priority is the technique with 100% of cardio put in the sparrings sessions, where I can active Wanderlei.”

MMA coach Rafael Cordeiro hints that his fighter, Wanderlei Silva, will come out aggressive to fight Michael Bisping at UFC 110 in Sydney, Australia, on Feb 21. Reed Harris confirms Torres vs Benavidez, Pulver vs Vazquez for WEC 47 on March 6

Posted: 18 Jan 2010 10:29 AM PST

Wec-47-poster_medium_medium_medium

It's official.

Former Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres (37-2) is back in action against top division prospect Joseph Benavidez (11-1) at WEC 47: "Bowles vs. Cruz" from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 6, 2010.

Joining them will be former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver (22-10) as he takes on Javier Vazquez (13-4).

Torres hasn't see the inside of a cage since his stunning first round knockout loss to Brian Bowles at WEC 42 last August at "The Joint" from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Despite the loss, the former champ is still widely regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. That's because prior to the setback the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt had not tasted defeat since 2003. He was riding an amazing 17-fight win streak, which came to an abrup end courtesy of several unanswered bombs from the heavy-handed Bowles.

Unfortunately, the East Chicago native won't enjoy the opportunity to ease back into the title hunt as a plethora of hungry bantamweights are circling the waters for their shot at 135-pound gold.

Chief among them is Benavidez, fresh off a first round technical knockout over Rani Yahya at WEC 45: "Cerrone vs. Ratcliff" just last month.

Benavidez -- the protege and training partner of Urijah Faber -- battled Dominick Cruz in a number one contender eliminator match in the co-main event of WEC 42: "Torres vs. Bowles." The 25-year-old lost the first fight of his career that night, missing out on his chance to face the 135-pound division champion.

As a result, Cruz is now set to face Bowles at the March 6 event.

Like most bantamweights, Benavidez uses his speed and quickness to win fights. He's also a fantastic wrestler, which complements his athleticism nicely. Before the loss to Cruz, the Team Alpha Male product had won both of his appearances in the WEC cage by decision over Danny Martinez and Jeff Curran.

In contrast, Pulver is at a crossroads in his career, having lost six of his last seven fights and going virtually winless (1-4) in his WEC career. In fact, this fight may be Pulver's last chance at redemption in a sport he once dominated in the not-too-distant past.

And it could be all or nothing for both fighters.

Vazquez has struggled since joining the promotion, dropping consecutive split decisions at WEC 42 and WEC 43. "Showtime's" biggest strength comes from his submission game, having finished 60 percent of his fights via tapout.

Will it be enough to send "Lil' Evil" back to the announcer's booth?

"I stopped (the original negotiations) because of the (knee) injury, but some things happened, some managers called me with some projects I’ll release soon, but I’m sure I’ll be back in an international event. I can’t talk about this project right now, but there’s a connection between me and the UFC now, something concrete that I didn’t have before. My return will be in the end of the year and will be in the UFC. I’ll be worried about my performance, my knee and my body. I wanna do my best in every fight. I’m used to big competition like the UFC, I wanna be ready."

Former PRIDE light heavyweight standout Ricardo Arona (14-5) teases a late 2010 return under the Zuffa banner after healing a knee injury suffered in his unanimous decision win over Marvin Eastman at Bitetti Combat 4 in September 2009. The win over "Beastman" was his only fight since the dissolution of PRIDE, which came shortly after his last appearance for the now-defunct Japanese promotion in April 2007. "The Brazilian Tiger" has wins over Wanderlei Silva, Dan Henderson and Alistair Overeem and would make a fine addition to the UFC 205-pound roster. Perhaps a rematch with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson -- who owns one of the sport's most popular highlights courtesy of his atomic slam on Arona at Critical Countdown 2004?

Georges St. Pierre protégé and training partner Mike Ricci signs with Bellator Fighting Championships

Before the ink has even dried on the recent contract of 145-pound standout Bao Quach, Bellator Fighting Championships announced today that up-and-coming lightweight Mike Ricci (5-0) will join their growing roster and likely debut in Spring 2010.

The undefeated 23-year-old trains alongside current UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre under Firas Zahabi at the TriStar gym in Montreal. He's competed in the Ringside MMA and TKO Major League MMA banners, among others.

From Ricci:

"What’s made me improve so much in a short period of time is helping guys like Cote and GSP in their training camps. It’s also helped my confidence. When you set a goal of being a world champion, it may seem far-fetched—but not when you train alongside guys who’ve already achieved that. I really pride myself on my defense. I think I’ve only been hit like twice in my whole career. I think that really separates me from my competition. I’ve gotten to the point in my career where my coach thinks I’m ready and I think I’m ready to take the next step. I’m just very grateful for the opportunity."

Ricci is the first fighter tapped to participant in the upcoming eight-man lightweight tournament for season two. Bellator will also conduct tournaments at 145, 170 and 185 lbs. with the winners of this year’s tournaments being declared No. 1 contenders to Bellator’s current roster of champions.

Season 2 of Bellator Fighting Championships begins begins April 8, 2010.

Michael Bisping pens another entry in his online diary as his confidence grows heading into his pending middleweight clash with Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110 from the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia, on Feb. 21. "The Count" has enlisted the help of friend and training partner Quinton Jackson for the inside scoop on "The Axe Murderer's" gameplan. MFC 24: Yves Edwards vs Derrick Noble set for Feb. 26 main event

Posted: 18 Jan 2010 06:55 AM PST

Mfc24_medium_medium

An expected intense showdown between two veteran lightweights will headline the card set for MFC 24: Heat XC on Friday, February 26.

Onetime MFC lightweight title challenger Derrick "The Eraser" Noble (25-12-1) will look to get back into 155-pound championship picture when he takes on "The Texas Gunslinger" Yves Edwards (36-15-1) in a clash that will top the lineup of fights at the River Cree Resort and Casino just outside Edmonton, Alberta.

Both fighters are known for putting a exclamation point on the fights. In his 25 victories, Nobles has 19 stoppages - nine by knockout and another 10 by submission including his somewhat surprising second-round guillotine choke win over jiu-jitsu practitioner Ariel Sexton at MFC 19. Edwards, meanwhile, has ended 29 of his 36 wins inside the distance - 14 by knockout and 15 by submission with his most-recent verdict being a first-round TKO of Kyle Jensen.

"This year, I’ve made it clear to the fighters in our organization that I want them to be exciting, get the crowd out their seats, and end fights in style," noted MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. "Derrick and Yves are the kind of fighters that won’t sit back, they won’t lay around, and they won’t be looking to drag things out."

"Both of them know how important this fight is to their respective careers and they are both well aware what lies ahead for them with an impressive win. They won’t be hoping to win by lame decision. They both want a big, convincing victory."

Noble is eager to put his last MFC outing behind him. The Cuba, Illinois, native couldn’t pull the trigger enough times in his encounter with Antonio McKee, resulting in McKee being awarded a five-round decision and the MFC lightweight belt.

"I expect this fight with Yves to be full of fireworks and to be completely different from my last MFC fight," said Noble. "Putting Yves and myself in the ring together is a fight the fans are going to enjoy.

"I’m really excited about this fight. Fighting guys like Yves is what my entire career has been about. I always fight tough guys and have never turned down a fight, so as soon as I was offered the fight it took me all of 10 second to say yes. I’m looking to get back to the top and Yves is a good way to make that happen.

"It’s a dangerous fight for both of us. I’ve fought good strikers so I know how to deal with that. I respect Yves and what he has accomplished but come February 26th I’ll be looking to take him out just like anybody else."

Noble has won two straight since falling to McKee and holds career victories over such notables as MFC welterweight champ Pat Healy, Thiago Alves, and Jake Ellenberger.

Edwards, too, is no stranger to big-name fights as his career resume reads like a who’s who of opponents. A winner of five of his last seven fights, the Woodlands, Texas , product has beaten the likes of Hermes Franca, Rich Clementi, Pete Spratt, Thomas Denny, and Dokonjonosuke Mishima during his career. The 33-year-old has also been in against a long list of notables such as Joe Stevenson, Matt Serra, and Nate Marquardt.

The Noble-Edwards encounter highlights the MFC 24 card which includes two light heavyweight clashes pitting Dwayne Lewis against David Heath, and Nick Penner against Chris Price, along with a middleweight tussle between Tom Watson and Travis Galbraith.

Tickets for MFC 24: Heat XC are going fast and are available through the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024 as well via Ticketmaster at (780) 451-8000, www.ticketmaster.ca, and Ticketmaster outlets. MFC 24: Heat XC will air live via streaming webcast - check out www.maximumfighting.com for all the details.

Tickets are also on sale now for MFC 25: Vindication slated for Friday, April 9, at the Winspear Centre in Edmonton , Alberta . Vindication will air live throughout North America on HDNet Fights. Among the fights scheduled for Vindication is light heavyweight showdown between Ryan "The Big Deal" Jimmo and MFC newcomer Wilson Gouveia. "Dana White's first offer was a joke and that lets me know he really don't want to do this ... his offer was laughable. That's the reason I wanted the camera guy in the room with us when I sat down with Dana, so the fans would know that I was serious and if it didn't happen, it wasn't because of me."

41-year-old NABO heavyweight boxing champion James "Lights Out" Toney (72-6-3, 44 KOs), who was in Memphis, Tennessee last month to attend UFC 107, tells FightHype.com that he's blaming promotion president Dana White for not taking his offer seriously regarding a switch to mixed martial arts. Perhaps Toney saw Ray Mercer put Tim Sylvia on queer street last year in Alabama and decided it was time to prove his power is more than enough to squash a former YouTube star and some past-their prime headliners. But even if he does, would it warrant the multi-million dollar payday he's looking for?
