Yoshiro Maeda vs. Cole Escovedo announced for DREAM 13

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 09:15 PM PST

Dream13-poster_medium

DREAM held a press conference at 1PM JST on Friday, March 12 to announce an additional bout for the upcoming DREAM 13.

The former WEC bantamweight title challenger, Yoshiro Maeda (25-7-2), will return to the ring against the DREAM debutant, Cole Escovedo (14-4).

Maeda last fought at DREAM's caged fight card, DREAM 12, and earned an impressive, first-round submission victory over the former WEC bantamweight champion, Chase Beebe. He looks to further his momentum against another WEC veteran, Cole Escovedo.

Escovedo, former (as well as the inaugural) WEC featherweight champion, is currently on a three-fight winning streak since returning to competition as a bantamweight. Before making his bantamweight debut at "PFC 13: Validation in May 2009, the Fresno native had suffered a prolonged bout with staph infection that sidelined him for almost three years and nearly truncated his promising career. Since the comeback, he has rebounded nicely, not only from the physical affliction but from a three-fight skid as well.

At DREAM 13, Escovedo will make his Japanese debut.

Elsewhere, DREAM event producer and chief match maker, Keiichi Sasahara confirmed Josh Barnett's participation in DREAM 13; while we reported earlier about the rumor that Barnett will face Siala "Mighty Mo" Siliga, Sasahara did not reveal Barnett's opponent at the presser.

Jake Rosholt vs Jeremy Horn on tap for KOTC event in Detroit, MI on April 16

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 07:51 PM PST

A match up of UFC veterans between up-and-comer Jake Rosholt and mixed martial arts legend Jeremy Horn appears to be set for a King of the Cage event from Detroit, Mich., on April 16.

Rosholt tweeted the news earlier tonight.

Rosholt (7-2) and Horn (84-19-5) have both compiled an undefeated record since their recent UFC release; 1-0 and 4-0 respectively.

The act by the UFC of cutting Rosholt following his submission loss to Kendall Grove at UFC 106 was a surprise to many at the time, but the four-time All-American wrestler from Oklahoma State University rebounded nicely last weekend with a submission victory of his own over Rudy Lindsey at a X-Treme Fighting League event.

The 27-year-old went 1-2 under the UFC banner -- defeating Chris Leben while dropping bouts to Dan Miller along with the aforementioned Grove -- after winning his one and only fight in the WEC before their middleweight division folded.

Horn, seven years the elder of his KOTC adversary, is a veteran of more than 100 professional mixed martial arts contests, spanning the course of 14 years, and will be coming into the bout riding a four-fight win streak with each fight ending via submission in the opening frame.

"Gumby" is of course known for his submission game, as over half of his victories have ended with his opponent tapping out.

Jeremy will have the clear advantage in that aspect of the match considering Jake's only two defeats have come due to submission.

The King of the Cage event will air live on HDNet from Cobo Arena on Friday, April 16, from Detroit, Michigan.

Josh Barnett may face Siala 'Mighty Mo' Siliga at DREAM 13 on March 22

Josh-barnett2_medium

MMA's poster boy of steroid controversy, Josh Barnett (24-5), will most likely make his return to competition in a week and half.

Josh Gross of SI.com reports on his twitter that the "Babyfaced Assassin" may fight Siala "Mighty Mo" Siliga at DREAM 13 on March 22.

Last summer, Barnett tested positive for steroid during the pre-fight drug test ahead of his highly anticipated showdown with Fedor Emelianenko at "Affliction: Trilogy." The subsequent denial of his license to fight in California wreaked havoc on the floundering Affliction, prompting not only the cancellation of the "Trilogy" event, but also the demise of the promotion.

Since then, his quest to regain license to fight in California has become a prolonged ordeal. Last month, his appeal of the denial of license was delayed for the fourth time, further complicating the legal burden on his fighting career. Meanwhile, he has kept himself busy with pro-wrestling gigs with Inoki Genome Foundation and participation in several No-Gi grappling competitions.

Barnett's signing with DREAM comes as no surprise: Given his name value in Japanese MMA and pro-wrestling, laxity toward the use of performance enhancing drugs in Japan, and stigma he has incurred in the US, DREAM has loomed as a logical destination for him. Also, the rumored signings of Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia to DREAM and the ongoing alliance between DREAM and Strikeforce will present him a few potential big matches.

Siala "Mighty Mo" Siliga, last fought a MMA match at Dynamite!! 2008 against Semmy Schilt. The Samoan kickboxer and boxer known for his devastating overhand right, has crushed three tomato cans before suffering his first loss in MMA against Schilt. It looks like the second loss in MMA is forthcoming: Despite more than a year and half away from competition, formerly top-ranked Barnett is beyond what a MMA neophyte like "Mighty Mo" is capable of handling, save a puncher's chance.

Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson: 'Pride FC tournaments were fixed'

Quoteworthy:

"The UFC treats me better than Pride. I don't know what their [PRIDE] problem was but they wouldn't promote me at all, they cheated me out of money from dolls and t-shirts, not paying me... when my contract was up and we were negotiating and I wanted more money and they were telling me ‘oh, but you're a nobody.' This was after I had fought in the Grand Prix and beat Igor Vovchanchyn. Even after I went to that K-1 fight and represented them in K-1, they were mad I won that K-1 fight! Just stuff like that... Igor Vovchanchyn, I got two weeks notice [for the fight]. Ninja, two weeks notice. It was bad. The tournaments were fixed. They said they drew numbers from a hat. It was all set up for Wanderlei to win. It was really bad. Even in some fights they would stand you up when you were winning, different stuff like that."

Former Pride FC star and UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson talked to Fighters Only Magazine about the not-so-good old days of the Japan based mixed martial arts promotion. "Rampage" implies some pretty serious wrongdoings on the part of Pride, including cheating him out of money and fixing fights. Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard about certain questionable practices employed by the folks in the "land of the rising sun." So, is this just "Rampage" being "Rampage," or are there some legitimate gripes to be had on behalf of Jackson and other Pride FC veterans?

Freddie Roach: The UFC is using James Toney to prove MMA fighters are better than boxers

Quoteworthy:

"I think they're using James as a way to say MMA fighters are better than boxers. If he fights a quality ground guy, once he goes to the ground he's gonna get killed. But If a guy chooses to stand up with James, James is gonna destroy him. That’s why they call him 'Lights Out.' I really don’t think there’s one fighter in MMA that could stand with James."

Famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach doesn't think the UFC has any intention of using Toney for anything other than a shining example of the difference between boxing and mixed martial arts. Despite the world class hands of the aging pugilist, there isn't much hope for him against a top level wrestler with ground and pound skills. Can "Lights Out" shock the world with a flash KO? Or will the UFC send him packing with his tail between his legs? His first opponent may be the deciding factor...

Nick 'The Goat' Thompson returns to Shine Fights to face Eduardo Pamplona at 'Worlds Collide: Mayorga vs Thomas'

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 12:31 PM PST

Goat_medium_medium

Miami, FL ( USA ): Shine Fights is excited to announce the official signing of a bout between former Bodog Welterweight Champion Nick "The Goat" Thompson (38-12-1) and Brazilian veteran Eduardo Pamplona (12-2).

The bout will take place on the main card at "Worlds Collide: Mayorga vs. Thomas," which will be held at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville , North Carolina on May 15, 2010. "Worlds Collide" will be broadcast live on Pay Per View.

Known as two of the most exciting welterweights in the world, both fighters will be making their debut with Shine Fights, and each fighter is looking to secure a place in the title picture with a victory.

Thompson, one of the most respected fighters in the sport, has fought all over the world, including in organizations such as the UFC, Bodog, Sengoku, EliteXC, and Strikeforce.

Having compiled an impressive 22-2 record as a welterweight from 2005-2009, including victories over UFC veterans Josh Neer, Keith Wisnewski, Chris Wilson, Ansar Chalangov, Paul Daley, current Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez, and Cage Rage veteran Mark Weir, Thompson found it difficult to find challengers at welterweight and was forced to make the move to middleweight to face a tough opponent in Tim Kennedy in Strikeforce.

Thompson lost that fight and immediately sought out an opportunity to fight at welterweight for an organization on the rise. His willingness to fight and an attractive offer from a growing promotion like Shine made Thompson aware that it was time to sign on the dotted line: "I couldn't get a fight. It was really frustrating," Thompson said in January when agreeing with Shine.

Now with an opponent in hand and a fight on the horizon, the 28-year-old has moved on to his next goal: Shine Fights gold. "I am happy to be with Shine and I look forward to earning the first shot at their welterweight title," said the former three-time Bodog champion. "Eduardo is a tough and exciting fighter," Thompson said about his upcoming opponent.

"He is the kind of fighter you like to fight because there will be fireworks...while he has not had a loss in the last three years, I am confident that I am the better fighter and will stand victorious when the night is over."

One of the top welterweights in Brazil , Pamplona is now on a mission to prove that he is also one of the best 170-pound fighters in the world. Already a veteran of organizations like Pancrase, Shooto, the IFL, and M-1 Challenge, Pamplona will now bring his aggressive striking and world-class ground game to Shine Fights.

Having earned victories over MMA legends Jorge "Macaco" Patino, Jose "Pele" Landi-Jons, and fellow Shine signee Daniel Acacio, Pamplona made his U.S. debut in 2007 at "IFL: Atlanta" in an exciting three round war with former EliteXC champion "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler.

Pamplona lost a hotly contested bout that night, but the 34-year-old has reeled off seven straight victories since, bringing his record to 12-2 overall. "This fight with Thompson is a big fight for me," Pamplona said. "He has many great victories on his record, and I believe it will be a great fight between us. I believe this fight will have a lot of movement. We both like to stand up and exchange. I believe we will stay on our feet."

"I'm excited to see these two tough fighters slug it out inside the Shine cage," Shine Fights matchmaker Ron Foster said. "The winner will definitely be at the top of the list when I look for guys to put in a title fight."

This highly anticipated bout in the Shine welterweight division joins the previously announced main event between former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga and MMA veteran Din Thomas on the May 15 card. Available on pay-per-view in North America , the event will start at 9 PM EST and will be available for $29.95. Tickets for the event will go on sale soon via Ticketmaster.

UFC 113: Joey Beltran vs Chad Corvin booked for May 8

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 11:53 AM PST

Beltran-corvin_medium

Heavyweights Joey Beltran (11-3) and Chad Corvin (6-0) have agreed to head north to throw leather at the upcoming UFC 113 event, which is scheduled for the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 8.

The UFC announced the match-up earlier today.

In addition to his destruction of Houston Alexander earlier this year, Beltran embarrased Octagon newcomer Rolles Gracie at last month's UFC 109: "Relentless" event in Las Vegas.

"The Mexicutioner" has won seven of his last eight, with a decision loss to Tony Lopez at KOTC: "Distorted" being the lone defeat during the nearly 15-month span.

He'll look to keep that momentum going against Corvin, who joins the Zuffa roster after compiling a perfect record through six fights on the regional scene.

The Kentucky native started his mixed martial arts career with Warrior MMA. After a torrid run from 2007-09 that saw him finish all four victims in less than four minutes combined, he graduated to Xtreme Fighting Championships (XFC) in December 2008.

Unfortunately for his opponents, the results weren't much different, as Corvin plowed his way through two opponents, ending both contests in the first round by way of (T)KO.

Now it's time for the big leagues.

UFC 113 will be headlined by a rematch between Lyoto Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. The card's co-main event is set to feature an exciting welterweight match up between perennial top contender, Josh Koscheck, and the explosive Paul Daley.

Kimbo Slice will also make his pay-per-view (PPV) debut against fellow TUF 10 cast member, Matt Mitrione.

Jared Hess and Sean Loeffler join Bellator Fighting Championships Season 2 middleweight tournament

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 09:39 AM PST

Dsc_0510_medium

CHICAGO, Ill. (March 11, 2010) - Bellator Fighting Championships made two more noteworthy additions to its upcoming Season 2 middleweight tournament today with the signings of 9-1-1 Bellator Season 1 tournament finalist Jared Hess and 18-4 MMA veteran Sean "The Destroyer" Loeffler.

Hess and Loeffler are the fourth and fifth confirmed participants in the eight-man middleweight tournament, joining Bryan "The Beast" Baker, Matt Major and Eric Schambari. Overall, the group boasts a combined winning percentage of .859 (55 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw).

"Jared's potential is unlimited," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "When his striking catches up to his strength on the ground, he could be one of the most dangerous 185 pounders in the business.

On the other hand, Sean has established a great record, has earned this opportunity to fight his way to a title shot and doesn't have a reverse gear. Perhaps more importantly, both Jared and Sean come to fight every time they step into the cage."

Hess, 26, a former NCAA All-American wrestler at the University of Central Oklahoma, took a 6-0-1 record into Bellator Season 1 where he notched two quick victories over Daniel Tabera (rear naked choke submission) and Yosmany Cabezas (TKO) before meeting Hector Lombard in Bellator's first-ever Middleweight Championship bout this past June.

Hess took the heavily favored Lombard into the fourth round in a brutal fight that ended by doctor's stoppage when Lombard opened a cut above Hess' right eye.

In the 9 months since, Hess scored a first round submission win over Keith Johnson at a local show in Oklahoma City and has continued to hone his stand-up game in preparation for Bellator Season 2.

"I'm looking forward to winning the tournament and getting a chance to face Hector again," Hess said. "I think it would be a much different outcome this time. My standup has improved by leaps and bounds since then. Add that to my wrestling and I think I'd have a distinct edge this time."

Loeffler, 27, began training in traditional martial arts at the age of five and made his pro debut 10 years ago at the age of 17. Since then, in 22 career fights, he has gone to the second round only three times and has seen the third only once.

He enters Bellator riding a five-fight win streak that includes a first-round armbar submission of former TUF participant Christian Fulgium and a 30-second TKO of local fighter Sam Salas in San Jacinto, Calif., late last month.

"I watch fights on TV and the guys are dancing around and throwing jabs. That's not for me ... that's not MMA," Loeffler said. "This is not ballet. It's combat sports, so you won't see me stalling and circling. If there's one word to describe my fighting style, it's violent. Win or lose, if you fight me, you're not gonna leave looking pretty."

Both fighters said they are also looking forward to fighting in front of a national TV audience thanks to Bellator's historic TV distribution alliance with FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo.

"Bellator's TV deal is really second to none and something that every fighter dreams of," Loeffler said. "I'm proud to be a part of it and excited to put on a good show for all the fans."

UFC Quick Quote: Brandon Vera is going to push Jon Jones

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 08:32 AM PST

Vera_medium

"His game is tight. His striking is good. His defense works good. We’ve been studying him for a while, and his biggest weakness is his inexperience. That’s the only X-factor in this game. Everything else is almost like a seasoned vet. Nobody’s ever been able to push Jones. He said he’s trying to stay comfortable and relaxed in the ring. Between me and Jones, if you just watch both of us fight, both of us has a hole -- somebody drops a hand here, somebody drops a hand there, somebody turns the wrong way and both of us have been capitalizing on other opponents (this way).  I’ve been trying to finish fights. I’m getting more and more comfortable in the 205-pound division. It’s a different pace, a different game, (and) I’m feeling a lot better."

UFC light heavyweight standout and Muay Thai striker Brandon Vera (via Sherdog.com) wants to show Jon Jones "The Truth" about where he stands in the 205-pound division when they square off at UFC on Versus 1 from the 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colorado, on March 21. "Bones" has been obliterating the competition since his UFC debut in 2008 and could vault himself into title contention with a dominant performance over Vera. But how will he respond if Vera turns up the heat?

One year after the passing of 'Mask,' the Lewis family still waits for justice

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 07:09 AM PST

Mask-believe_medium

Charles ‘Mask’ Lewis Jr., founder of the popular multi-million dollar MMA clothing line and television show TapouT, was killed on the morning of March 11, 2009, when his Ferrari collided with a Porsche driven by Jeffrey David Kirby of Costa Mesa.

One year later, the Lewis family still waits for justice.

While most of the mixed martial arts community has been able to accept Mask's passing while pressing forward in honor of his memory, his sister Carla Lewis continues to face it on a daily basis as the trial of Kirby, now scheduled for April 2, 2010, continues to drag on.

Kirby had been charged with vehicular manslaughter and is facing a possible sentence of more than 19 years if convicted. However, like most court cases, lengthy delays are no longer the exception and have instead become the rule.

"For the past year Charles' attorney and myself have repeatedly come before the Judge, wanting our case sent to trial," Lewis said. "Kirby has changed his attorney several times and has not appeared, at least twice. The last court date had in attendance several family members and friends who had traveled a great distance, just to be told we have to come back. It is quite frustrating, to say the least."

"We were given a long course judge, the pre-trial and jury selection begins April 2," continued Lewis. "Unfortunately, I imagine several court dates will be involved before Kirby's attorneys have a chance to mount his defense [as] Kirby refused to acknowledge he was under the influence."

Kirby had previous drunken driving convictions (1985, 2002) prior to March 11, and tested at a .13 blood-alcohol level a few hours after the fatal crash.

Toxicology tests performed by the Orange County Coroner following the tragedy came back negative for Lewis, reaffirming the testimony from friends and family that Mask did not drink or take drugs.

TapouT was launched in 1997, with nothing more than a vision and a handful of merchandise — and enough gas in their van to follow fighters across the state of California to promote and sell TapouT clothing.

Now his empire, along with Dan "Punkass" Caldwell and Timothy "Skyskrape" Katz, includes a reality TV show, a line of bottled water, an impressive stable of mixed-martial-arts fighters and of course its massive clothing line, which went from a few thousand dollars in sales back in the late 90’s to over $100 million in 2008.

In his personal life, Lewis Jr. built another empire, one of family and friends. One that his sister Carla will never forget.

"He is deeply missed by his two younger brothers, his children, his nieces/nephews and me."
