MMA Quick Quote: Roger Huerta enters Bellator tournament with a target on his back

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 08:29 PM PDT

Roger-huerta_medium

"Bellator provided me with a sense of security. I control my own destiny in the tournament. The winner gets to face one of the best lightweight fighters in the world -- that’s the goal. If I lose, then it’s my fault. I know I’ll have a target on my back and that these guys will be fighting with everything they’ve got when they meet me. I know it’s going to be hard because I have to win the three fights, but I’m giving myself more fights if I win. It’s up to me, and I like the sound of that."

Former UFC lightweight contender Roger Huerta (via Sherdog.com) weighs the pros and cons of joining a hungry roster of Bellator fighters that may now be licking their chops in anticipation of getting the opportunity to elevate themselves by taking down a "name" like Huerta. "El Matador" hasn't seen action since a gritty split decision loss to Gray Maynard on the final fight of his Zuffa contract at UFC Fight Night 19 last September. Can he return to form and battle his way to an eventual superfight with Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez?

Roger Gracie confirms May 15 Strikeforce debut against Kevin Randleman

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 03:24 PM PDT

Roger-gracie_medium

World class grappler and mixed martial arts enigma Roger Gracie will finally make his Strikeforce debut when he tangles with free-falling light heavyweight Kevin Randleman at the upcoming Showtime event planned for May 15 in St. Louis, MO.

Gracie confirmed the pending match up to Graciemag.com earlier today.

The celebrated ADCC and CBJJ jiu-jitsu champion made his fighting debut back at Bodog’s ‘USA vs. Russia’ event way back in December of 2006, forcing muscular mauler Ron "H20" Waterman say uncle courtesy of a textbook armbar.

Despite showing much promise, Gracie has only competed once since then -- a 2008 submission win over fading Japanese star Yuki Kondo at Sengoku 2 in May of 2008.

He was expected to appear on separate occasions under the Sengoku banner but pulled out of a fight against Travis Wiuff after suffering a rib injury and was then denied a second time when his next opponent, Jeff Monson, fought the law (and the law won).

Despite the layoff, he matches up well against the ice-cold Randleman. While he's a tremendous wrestler bearing a resume littered with the world's top fighters across multiple weight classes, "The Monster" has dropped a staggering 9 of his last 12, including a cardio-deprived decision loss to Mike Whitehead in his Strikeforce debut last June.

And it certainly doesn't help that close to half his losses have come by way of submission.

The Strikeforce card for its rumored return to St. Louis already boasts an impressive unofficial line-up of heavyweight attractions including Brett Rogers vs. Alistair Overeem, Andrei Arlovski vs. Antonio Silva and perhaps even Fedor Emelianenko vs. Fabricio Werdum.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for future updates to this still-developing fight card.

Versus and DirecTV settle their dispute -- MMA fans rejoice

After months of a ridiculous back-and-forth involving Versus -- home to the WEC as well as the NHL -- and DirecTV, the two sides have finally come to an agreement on offering the cable network to its 18 million plus subscribers.

Both DirecTV and Versus have confirmed news.

The channel will be available in the same programming package it was in August of last year, when this whole squabble began.

And with the first UFC on Versus card taking place this Sunday, there couldn't have been a better time for a deal to be reached.

UFC on Versus is set to go down this Sunday, March 21, at 9 p.m. The card will feature an exciting tilt in the light heavyweight division between Brandon Vera and Jon Jones, and an explosive bout featuring two fierce strikers in the UFC heavyweight division when Gabriel Gonzaga and Junior Dos Santos square off.

And now finally, we all can enjoy it!

Think it's just a coincidence the deal got done this week. I think maybe not...

Miguel Torres' cut gets revised during plastic surgery

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 01:43 PM PDT

Miguel-torres-surgery_medium

Former WEC bantamweight champion, Miguel "Angel" Torres, today went back under the knife for the second time in little more than a week to revise the cut that Joseph Benavidez delivered to his forehead in their match at WEC 47.

Dr. Harris Sterman of Teaneck, N.J. -- a plastic surgeon and a specialist in this type of surgery -- performed the operation.

Torres was taken to the local hospital emergency room shortly after his second round submission loss last weekend, receiving 16 stitches on the outside and seven on the inside to close the gash.

However, because he makes a living as a fighter, he and his advisers opted to revise the cut and perform a more detailed closure of the wound to ensure that it does not give him problems down the road.

Sterman, therefore, performed what is known as a four-layer closure rather than settle for the regular closure performed after the fight.

The procedure calls for the following steps:

  1. Reopen the cut down to the bone.
  2. Cut away on each side of the area to expose fresh skin and matter to work with and provide a very good fit to put the wound back together.
  3. Perform a four-layer suture, which will close the posterium, the muscle, the dermis and then the epidermis.

Instead of the 23 total stitches that he received initially, this procedure will see Torres receive more than 100 stitches with small gauge sutures.

Not only will he be able to fight with no worry in the future, but he'll be able to have an acting or modeling career, too.

Mullet and all.

Check out some of the pictures from the procedure below. You know you want to.

Bellator FC signs former UFC lightweight star Roger Huerta

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 12:20 PM PDT

Bad_boy_roger_huerta_shirt_medium

It's a done deal.

After much speculation over the weekend about the signing of Roger Huerta on the part of the upstart promotion in the MMA groundswell, Bellator FC formally announced the exclusive signing of Huerta during a press conference from Chicago, Illinois this afternoon.

"El Matador" will compete in Bellator's season two lightweight tournament, with the winner earning a shot to take on the current lightweight champ, Eddie Alvarez.

Huerta (21-3-1) last fought in September of 2009 where he suffered the second of back-to-back losses when Gray Maynard edged him out in a split decision victory. That fight came about a year after his unanimous decision loss to Kenny Florian at UFC 87. Roger took the time off between fights to pursue his acting and modeling careers.

Now back in the mix as a lightweight fighter in a top promotion, Huerta aims to show fight fans everywhere that he hasn't lost a step and is still the same guy that reeled off six straight wins in the UFC's tough lightweight division.

"The main reason I signed with Bellator instead of Strikeforce is their format. I have a chance to control my own destiny. And that's what I want. I have the chance to fight four times this year. I want to get back to being active. I'm hungry. I'm ready," Huerta said in describing the reason he chose Bellator over other MMA promotions.

Roger's first fight will take place on April 8 from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida and will air live on FOX Sports Net.

Other participants in Bellator's season two lightweight tournament include Toby Imada, Janne Tulirinta, Chad Hinton, Ferrid Kheder, Mike Ricci, and Carey Vainer.

Keep it locked to MMAmania.com for the announcement of the final fighter that will compete in this season's lightweight tournament.

Spike TV to air replay of UFC 108: 'Evans vs Silva' tonight (March 15)

If you didn't get a chance to catch the live pay-per-view telecast of UFC 108: "Evans vs. Sivla" back in January, you might want to free up your schedule or get your DVR ready for tonight (Mar. 15) because Spike TV will be running a replay of the promotion's traditional New Year's Eve event at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Although the UFC's original plans to make this one of the biggest events in it's history were marred by several injuries to star fighters, the final product was still a solid night of fights.

Here's the main card lineup:

- Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva

- Paul Daley vs. Dustin Hazelett

- Sam Stout vs. Joe Lauzon

- Jim Miller vs. Duane Ludwig

- Junior Dos Santos vs. Gilbert Yvel

UFC Quick Quote: Junior Dos Santos has a surprise in store for Gabriel Gonzaga

"I'm still fresh. I'm still a baby in boxing, with only four years of practice. I think my ground is good too if you want to know. I train with great guys in the USA and I'm always learning. This fight is going to be a test for me; I have a chance to surprise people because I believe Napao [Gonzaga] will try to take me down. There are positions that I developed in secret and if I've the chance I won't waste them."

When UFC heavyweight sluggers Junior Dos Santos and Gabriel Gonzaga square off in the co-main event of this weekend's UFC on Versus card, many people expect to see fireworks in the form of a stand up battle. JDS however, believes that the fight is likely to go to the ground, and he recently told UFC.com that he's more than ready for it. With another impressive win over the always tough Gonzaga, Dos Santos is likely to join Cain Velasquez in line for a title shot before the year is out. Will Junior continue his meteoric rise up the ranks of the UFC's heavyweight division? And if so, how is it gonna go down? Sound off, Maniacs.

Fight Festival 27 results and quick recap

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 09:34 AM PDT

Salmon_medium

Helsinki, Finland was the scene for Fight Festival 27 this past weekend, an MMA event with a bit of euro flare. Three former UFC fighters headlined the card in Marcus Aurelio, Jake O'Brien, and Sean Salmon.

In the night's main event, "Maximus" Aurelio easily disposed of Finland's own Niko Puhakka with a rear-naked choke in the second round. Much of the opening frame was spent in a bit of a stalemate on the ground before the two fighters returned to their feet where Aurelio closed out the round with some big shots.

In round two, it was Puhakka who landed some effective strikes before he got careless and provided Marcus with an opportunity to take his back and slip in the choke.

"Irish" Jake O'Brien outwrestled Toni Valtonen on his way to a sort of lackluster unanimous decision victory. While Jake was able to get Toni down to the ground at will, he wasn't really able to inflict much damage from his dominant position. But in the same sense, Valtonen was no match for O'Brien on the ground and was unable to control the position throughout the entire fight.

Sean Salmon, best known as the guy who took one hellacious kick to the dome courtesy of Rashad Evans at UFC Fight Night 8, once again fell victim to a fight-ending strike. This time, it was a knee to the body provided by Alexander Shlemenko that ended the fight only 40 seconds into round one.

Check out the full list of Fight Festival 27 results after the jump.

- Marcus Aurelio defeats Niko Puhaka via submission (rear-naked choke) in round two

- Jake O'Brien defeats Toni Valtonen via unanimous decision

- Marcus Vanttinen defeats Martin Zawada via technical knockout (punches) in round three

- Alexander Shlemenko defeats Sean Salmon via knockout (knee) in round one

- Vener Galiev defeats Mikko Suvanto via unanimous decision

- Juha-Pekka Vainikainen defeats Lukasz Bugara via unanimous decision

- Emma Watson defeats Outi Louhimo via unanimous decision

- Joni Salovaara defeats Arvydus Zilius via submission (rear-naked choke) in round two

UFC welterweight Thiago Alves wants payback -- first for Fitch, then St. Pierre

Quoteworthy:

“I’m thrilled and already prepared. I’ve been waiting for this fight for four years and now I got the chance for the revenge. I like revenges. It’s time to payback. I think I was too young when we fought. I wasn’t new in the sport but was in UFC. This American system of losing weight, everything else... Nowadays, I’m a totally different fighter. I learned a lot and I am more experienced and a much better fighter when it comes to standing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu... It couldn’t be a better time. I’m coming off a loss and I want to go back to the winners list. Beating Fitch, I will fight for the belt again. I want to take him on, and go after the belt, no matter who holds it. I think Saint Pierre is going to win but you never know. If it’s Dan Hardy, I'll take the belt from him and get the revange with St. Pierre next."

Brazilian striking sensation Thiago Alves has been hard at work over at American Top Team in an effort to return to his number one contendership status in the UFC's welterweight division. In order to do that, Alves must avenge the loss he suffered to Jon Fitch four years ago when the two meet at UFC 111 on March 27 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. So what do we think? Will Alves get the revenge he so desperately craves against Jon Fitch and Georges St. Pierre? Or is Fitch the guy who is gonna be propelled back on the path to another shot at welterweight gold?

WEC 48: Mackens Semerzier vs Anthony Morrison in the works for April 24

Posted: 15 Mar 2010 06:26 AM PDT

Semerzier-morrison_medium

There's a featherweight slugfest in the works between up-and-coming 145-pound prospects Mackens Semerzier (5-1) and Anthony Morrison (15-8) currently being assembled for the upcoming WEC 48 pay-per-view from the Arco Arena in Sacramento, CA, on Saturday, April 24.

MMAmania.com learned of the pending match-up late Sunday night.

Semerzier made a huge impact in his promotion debut back at WEC 43: "Cerrone vs. Henderson" in October 2009 when he shocked the heavily-favored Waggney Fabiano by submitting the jiu-jitsu black belt with a sneaky triangle choke of his own.

Unfortunately "Mack da Menace" was unable to capitalize on his momentum, dropping a unanimous decision loss to the rugged Deividas Taurosevicius at WEC 46: "Varner vs. Henderson" earlier this year.

Like Semerzier, Morrison came up snake eyes at January's WEC 46 event when he was faced with the unenviable task of trying to stymie the onslaught of Mike Thomas Brown in the former featherweight champion's first match since coughing up the 145-pound crown to Jose Aldo last November.

A pretty tall order for anyone in the stacked featherweight division, let alone a promotion newcomer. Fortunately the WEC is giving "Cheesesteak" a second chance to prove he belongs but Semerzier is going to provide a fairly stiff test.

WEC 48: "Aldo vs. Faber" features a featherweight championship bout between the local fan favorite "The California Kid" Urijah Faber and unstoppable 145-pound champion Jose Aldo.

Also announced for the main card is a lightweight championship brouhaha between champion Ben "Smooth" Henderson and challenger Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone. Former featherweight champion Mike Brown will also take part in the event when he enters the cage opposite Manny Gamburyan.
