Quoteworthy:

“I’m gonna be real mean in this fight, fuck Jake Shields, you're going to see. I am stronger, I hit harder, I take punishment and he will not take me down, or hold me there for long if I make a mistake. This is gonna be a shock to those Jake Shields nut huggers. Once I am in that top ten, I’m coming after everyone above me.”

Elite XC number one contender in the welterweight division, Paul “Semtex” Daley, has some choice fighting words for division champion Jake Shields. “Semtex” is one of the best kept secrets in mixed martial arts and will have the biggest opportunity of his career when he faces Shields at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., on October 4 for the Elite XC welterweight title. The bout will air on national television as part of the “Saturday Night Fights” series on CBS. Despite his relative anonymity, comments like this have become the norm from the charismatic Brit. He certainly ain’t shy.

UFC Quick Quote: My cup runneth over

Posted: 09 Sep 2008 12:17 AM CDT

“Matter of fact, I’m wearing his cup. That’s probably why I got the knockout because I’m wearing his cup! I fogot to say that - I’m wearing his cup! We’re brothers…we all just come together and help each other out.”

“Sugar” Rashad Evans reveals his secret weapon against Chuck Liddell during a UFC 88 post-fight interview. Evans shocked the world twice in twenty-four hours. First by knocking out “The Iceman” in brutal fashion at UFC 88 ‘Breakthrough” and then by sharing just how close Team Jackson gets during training. TMI!

Mitsuhiro Ishida vs Justin Wilcox Strikeforce fight set for Playboy Mansion

Japanese mixed martial artist Mitsuhiro “Endless Fighter” Ishida (16-4-1) has been signed for a lightweight bout against American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) up-and-comer Justin “The Silverback” Wilcox (5-2) at “Strikeforce at the Mansion II” on September 20.

He competed five times under the Pride FC banner in 2006 mostly in the Bushido series. He managed a very impressive (4-0) record on the Bushido scene with wins over David Bielkheden and Marcus Auriello.

Ishida moved up to face the division kingpin Takanori Gomi at the 2006 Pride New Year’s Eve show, but was handled pretty easily by the champ with an early stoppage.

A year later he scored a huge win over then Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez, which opened a lot of eyes and earned himself a spot in the DREAM Lightweight Grand Prix.

He lost in the quarter finals to Caol Uno by second round submission.

Ishida uses a strong wrestling attack to score takedowns and control his opponents. It’s an interesting strategy heading into this fight because his opponent isn’t too shabby in the wrestling department either.

Wilcox was a stand out wrestler at Edinboro University, the same school that Josh Koshcheck once called home. In fact, Wilcox credited Koshcheck with getting him interested in MMA and the two are now training partners at AKA.

Here’s a snip from “The Silverback:”

“I love the way they train. They have that grind that I’m used to from wrestling in college so I feel at home here. My college coach always said if you want to be a champ, you have to surround yourself with champs so I went out to AKA and haven’t lost since.”

His most recent win was a decision over “The Ultimate Fighter” reject Gabe Ruediger at a small event in Santa Monica, Calif., less than two weeks ago.

It’s clear he’ll be stepping up his competition level when he faces Ishida, who will be making his debut on U.S. soil. This should be a solid addition to a decent card that will be streamed live at Sherdog.com beginning at 7:30 p.m ET on September 20.

Now and yen: UFC flirting with Japanese market

Posted: 08 Sep 2008 11:17 PM CDT

Lights, Gamera, Action.

It seems the UFC is kicking around the idea of making a run at mixed martial arts in the Land of the Rising Sun. In fact, several of Japan’s media outlets including Nikkan and Houchi Sports have a spring 2009 date for an alleged UFC invasion.

As the mill turns, names are already being paired up for combat. Of course a rematch between Takanori Gomi and BJ Penn is a no-brainer, as is Kid Yamamoto vs Uriah Faber. But appearances by Kazushi Sakuraba and Hidehiko Yoshida aren’t exactly whetting my appetite.

Not that it matters. A Japanese event needs Japanese icons, which describes both Sakuraba and Yoshida. And if the UFC really wants to sell tickets, Hong Man Choi vs. Dalip Singh is a MUST.

While this story has yet to be corroborated by the UFC, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to most MMA fans. On July 11 the UFC signed a contract with WOWOW Broadcasting to air UFC pay-per-views in Japan, and after successful shows in England it seems only fitting for Zuffa to capture the former Mecca of mixed martial arts.

Besides, the way DREAM and Sengoku are performing finacially, they may have little or no competition.

Of course there is that whole messy little business concerning the demise of PRIDE. Unless the UFC stacks an event card with nothing but Japanese heroes, it could be a tough sell. How bitter is the average Japanese MMA fan?

And there is also the Fedor principle, which simply states that UFC President Dana White isn’t going to risk the credibility of a division by having it’s main star obliterated by an Ad hoc fighter who is one and done.

How do you risk the image of Penn if “The Fireball Kid” is a soldier of fortune? That’s why I’m keeping my excitement in check, because it seems like we’re back to the same old logistical problems that pop up every time a discussion starts about landing free agents.

You know Dana’s rule: Either commit to a contract, or you die in limbo.

Just ask Randy Couture.

Evan Tanner dies in the desert (seriously)

Posted: 08 Sep 2008 06:40 PM CDT

Evan Tanner

“I plan on going so deep into the desert, that any failure of my equipment, could cost me my life.”

Evan Tanner, August 18, 2008

It appears that former UFC middleweight champion Evan Tanner predicted his own death less than one month ago.

The Imperial County Sheriff’s Department today discovered the dead body of a man in the Palo Verde, Calif., mountain area. And it is indeed Tanner.

MMAmania.com has placed several calls to the Imperial County Sheriff’s Department and we have been unable to confirm or deny the report. However, it has been confirmed by several people close to Tanner.

Here’s a snip from IVPressOnline.com:

“Authorities have not confirmed if the body is that of missing mixed martial arts fighter, Evan Tanner, who had fought in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Tanner, 37, has been missing since last weekend. Tanner’s friends from Oceanside, where Tanner resides, had been texting him without reply since Wednesday before they reported him missing on Friday. On Sunday, a campsite was discovered in the Clapp Springs area of the Palo Verde mountains. Tanner’s motorcycle was found at the campsite. A body was found today when a sheriffs deputy was flying around the general location of the campsite. The Imperial County deputy coroner is being flown in to retrieve and identify body.”

This is truly a a huge loss. He was a pioneer of the sport who had his own unique approach to fighting and to life.

He was an adventure seeker, documenting his travels in great detail on his personal blog and on Spike.com. Tanner recently overcame a dark period in his life and a battle with alcohol.

His life was an open book, which either turned fans in his favor or against him. Tanner didn’t really care one way or the other how people felt — he did things his way.

He recently returned to the Octagon to recapture some of the glory from earlier in his fighting career; however, he lost his first two comeback bouts.

Tanner mentioned that he was going to take some time off and address some injuries that had been hampering him for the past several years. In the meantime, he continued his nomadic ways. While terribly tragic and entirely premature, it’s perhaps a poetic end for one of the most eccentric fighters the sport has ever known.

Rest in peace, Evan.

UFC Quick Quote: Tito Ortiz brands Juanito Ibarra ‘a thief’

Posted: 08 Sep 2008 03:59 PM CDT

Tito Ortiz

“Let me explain this to you because it really pisses me off that Ibarra has done what he has done, he is a thief. I have been running training camps for seven years up in Big Bear California and the most that my camp has cost a fighter to attend is $35,000. Ibarra was charging Jackson $65,000 to go to Big Bear. I don’t understand that!! He was being very disrespectful and taking advantage of 'Rampage'. Including travel, training partners, food and lodging, the most ever was $35,000, maybe if you flew in more trainers…$40K. Where did that extra money go that Ibarra was charging? 'Rampage' is really pissed and he feels betrayed that he was taken advantage of and I couldn’t agree more with him. I don’t care if Juanito reads this or hears about it anywhere, he already knows that he is blackballed. I don’t care who you are; fighters work very hard for the money they earn and I feel slighted for even knowing Juanito.”

– Tito Ortiz vents his frustrations via PunchDrunkGamer.com regarding his feelings about Juanito Ibarra — the former trainer for Quinton “Rampage” Jackson — in a recent interview. Ortiz and Jackson are close friends. Jackson and Ibarra severed their relationship after Jackson lost his 205-pound title to Forrest Griffin back in July. He then went on a long, strange, sleepless and energy-drink fueled trip that landed him in the slammer. Jackson has indicated that his uncharacteristic behavior was sparked in part when he learned that someone close to him was stealing from him. He has never publicly fingered Ibarra as that person.
