Seth Petruzelli vs Aaron Rosa Elite XC fight scheduled for October 4

Seth Petruzelli vs Aaron Rosa Elite XC
A light heavyweight bout between former Team Punishment member Aaron Rosa (11-2) and “Ultimate Fighter 2″ alum Seth Petruzelli (9-4) has been added to the undercard of Elite XC’s “Saturday Night Fights” on CBS event at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., on October 4.

Rosa won the first 10 fights of his career, competing mostly under the Renegade Extreme Fighting banner. His strong resume earned him a contract with Pro Elite and a slot on the Sho XC Challenger Series 1 card against Jefferson Silva in July of 2007.

He made quick work of Silva, dispatching him with a first round technical knockout. Company officials were again impressed and opted to match Rosa against fellow undefeated fighter Jared Hamman three months later at Sho XC Challenger Series 3.

This time, however, Rosa lost to a better prepared Hamman, suffering the first loss of his career in a second round submission loss. To make matters worse, he lost a lackluster decision to Jaime Fletcher at Sho XC 5 six months later.

That was his last fight for Pro Elite. He has fought one time since then, beating Ron Fields by second round technical knockout at Adrenaline MMA 1.

Most of us remember his opponent, Seth Petruzelli, from his stint on “The Ultimate Fighter 2.” He made it all the way to the semifinals before losing a razor close split decision to eventual runner-up Brad Imes.

He’s only lost twice since November of 2001 and both losses were in the UFC Octagon against Matt Hamill and Wilson Gouveia, respectively.

This should be a decent scrap. Both guys are experienced and know what’s going on inside the cage. Of course, there is also definite potential for this to turn into a boring hug fest, but if these guys come to fight the fans in Sunrise could be in for a treat.

Strikeforce strikes Canada TV deal on The Score Network

strikeforce playboy sherdog streaming
While most fans in around the world will have to check out the Sherdog.com live video stream to get a glimpse of “Strikeforce at the Mansion II” next Saturday, our friendly neighbors to the north in Canada will be able to watch the event their television sets thanks to a deal struck between the San Jose-based organization and The Score Network.

The Score Network is a Canadian-based television network primarily based around sports news, highlights and live event sports coverage. It provides all the WWE coverage in Canada, as well has NBA, NFL and NCAA sports action.

The deal calls for the network to begin its Strikeforce event coverage on September 20 with “Strikeforce at the Mansion II” beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET. There is also a program that debuted last Saturday (September 6) in the mold of the successful late night program in the U.S. titled, “Strikeforce on NBC,” which the network will continue to feature going forward.

Here’s a snip from John Levy, Chairman and CEO of Score Media Inc on the deal:

“The Score looks forward to bringing an awesome line up of Strikeforce MMA programming to viewers across the country and as we go from live broadcasting of our studio launch party on September 20th to ‘Strikeforce At The Mansion II,’ we know we’ll be giving our fans a broadcast line-up they can’t resist.”

Strikeforce has really been making a push to get to that next level as a mixed martial arts promotion. It’s a shame a once solid fight card for its second trip to the Playboy Mansion has been bombarded with injuries.

The good news is that the promotion almost always delivers solid events. And this one should be no different — even with the watered down match ups. The main event of the night will be the Strikeforce debut of Japanese stand out Kazuo Misaki. He’ll face former UFC top contender Joe “Diesel” Riggs.

Lightweight Champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson will also be in action, as well as another top lightweight fighter Mitsuhiro "Endless Fighter" Ishida.

Strikeforce still feels like this event will be an exciting one for their new Canadian television viewers.

Here’s a snip from Strikeforce founder and CEO Scott Coker:

“We are excited about the opportunity to bring the Strikeforce MMA product to fans in Canada. The Score has a reputation for being an exceptional sports television platform and we are proud to join their family of programming.”

MMA Quick Quote: Hurricane Ike saves Chael Sonnen from Paulo Filho … for now

paulo filho

"… everybody was really sorry about it, we were training hard and it happened. It's sad for some, and good for others, Good for Sonnen … we were stronger and ready to get his left arm again. He has now more one month to get ready.”

– The trainer for WERC Middleweight Champion tells Tatame.com that the postponed WEC 36 event will benefit Chael Sonnen because it will give him another month to prepare. Hurricane Ike threatened to hit South Florida last week, forcing the Zuffa-owned promotion to move the show at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to November 5. The first match between Filho and Sonnen ended with a second round Filho armbar after Sonnen dominated the Brazilian in round one. It was somewhat of a controversial finish and the war of words has been on ever since. Let’s hope it all comes to a head on the new fight night — enough delays.

Lyoto Machida ‘would like to wait for Thiago’ Silva fight

Quoteworthy:

“… we just don’t see the advantage of fighting a UFC newcomer. The (Thiago) fight made a lot of sense and it was the one we wanted…. We would like to wait for Thiago to heal up. They are both 13-0, so let’s see who gets to 14 first…. Nothing personal against Thiago. It’s going to be a bummer to have to stand across the Octagon from him, but sometimes you have to fight your friends…. I text messaged (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva right after the fight on Saturday night and said we would fight Rashad next. But these guys know what they are doing. (UFC president) Dana (White) was saying that if Chuck (Liddell) got by Rashad, he would get a title shot but then Rashad beat Chuck and in that fashion (so) maybe that is the fight to promote. We would like to get a shot. (But) it’s a business and they think that that fight makes more sense right now. We don’t feel slighted.”

Ed Soares — the manager who represents top light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida — says that he and his fighter would prefer to wait until Thiago Silva heals from a back injury and fight him rather than someone else. Machida and Silva were booked to compete at UFC 89: “Leben vs. Bisping” in a 205-pound fight between two of the top contenders in the division who happen to also both be undefeated. It would have gone a long way toward establishing a number one contender after Rashad Evans gets his crack at division kingpin, Forrest Griffin. Soares makes a good point; however, Rich Franklin has also emerged as a great high-profile match up if Silva takes longer than expected to recover. And we all know that besides Anderson Silva, “The Dragon” is the only other man who has handed “Ace” a loss.
