Brian Stann vs Steve Cantwell 3 set for UFC Fight for the Troops

Posted: 26 Sep 2008 03:35 PM CDT

WEC light heavyweight champion Steve Cantwell (6-1) and former division kingpin Brian Stann (6-1) will duke it out in a rubbermatch inside the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., on December 10.

The 205-pound match up is the first casualty of the promotion’s division downsizing, which was just made official today. For more on that click here.

Stann is a former Marine who certainly fits the bill for the the three-hour Spike TV special that is designed to honor United States military personnel. “All American” — who earned a Silver Star for valor while serving his country in Iraq — defeated Doug Marshall earlier this year to capture the title.

However, his reign atop the weight class was short lived thanks to Cantwell just five months later and a second round technical knockout. It was a fight in which Stann tired early and was unable to land a Hail Mary punch to turn the tables.

Cantwell is riding a three-fight win streak after suffering the first loss of his career to Stann back in early 2007. He stopped all three opponents. In fact, Cantwell has never been the distance in seven professional mixed martial arts bouts.

Of course, the WEC light heavyweight title will not be on the line … it will more than likely be dissolved. It should be real interesting to see how these two perform not only against one another, but how they stack up against the rest of the fighters in perhaps the UFCs most talent-rich division.

Miguel Torres vs Manny Tapia WEC 37 title fight set for Dec. 3

Posted: 26 Sep 2008 01:27 PM CDT

Miguel Torres will once again put his 135-pound title on the line when he takes on Manny Tapia at WEC 37 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday, December 3.

Torres is in the midst of a breakout year despite years of dominating his competition in smaller shows throughout the nation. In fact, he has what some would consider a cult-like following from those who watched him shine in and around the Chicago area before signing with the Zuffa-owned promotion.

Fans likely now know the reason for all the underground buzz after "Angel" scored a thrilling third round technical knockout win over Yoshiro Maeda earlier this year in one of the best fights of 2008 to date.

Torres — a Carlson Gracie protégé with sick Muay Thai skills — submitted Chase Beebe prior to defeating Maeda to capture the WEC bantamweight title.

Tapia is a former King of the Cage star who has kept his perfect record intact since joining the WEC with two exciting wins over Brandon Foxworth and Antonio Banuelos. "The Mangler" often tends to live up to his nickname, preferring to stand and bang it out rather than take his fights to the ground.

He has not seen any action since February because of a knee injury that has kept him on the sidelines.

Tapia is an extremely game opponent; however, he will need to bring an all-around game if he intends to knockoff a guy like Torres who is widely regarded as among the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport today.

WEC 37 will air on the VERSUS network, beginning at 9 p.m. ET on fight night. Stay dialed in to MMAmania.com for the latest updates and rumors leading up to the event.

WEC to eliminate light heavyweight and middleweight divisions to start 2009

Posted: 26 Sep 2008 10:32 AM CDT

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) announced today that it will no longer support light heavyweight and middleweight divisions, deciding instead to focus on lighter weight classes such as welterweight (170 pounds), lightweight (155 pounds), featherweight (145 pounds) and bantamweight (135 pounds).

The expected move is scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2009. In fact, the event scheduled for December 3 will be the last to feature the heavier divisions.

Here’s a snip from WEC Vice President Peter Dropick:

“With every fight, the WEC has proven itself to be a powerful and growing presence in sports, both with our live events and our programming on VERSUS. Exciting matchups like Torres vs. Tapia on Dec. 3 and the incredible fights we have planned for 2009 under this new structure will no doubt establish WEC as the home of the best lighter weight fighters in the world."

This is good news for several reasons.

First, it will enable the promotion to showcase more lighter fighters more often on its cards and build more stars. Under the current format several talented up-and-comers either didn’t fight frequently enough or were buried on the nontelevised portion of the cards.

In addition, the light heavyweight and middleweight talent pools in the WEC are extremely shallow — champions had very few true number one contenders. Furthermore, because Zuffa — the parent company of the UFC — runs the WEC the good fighters in those divisions will likely be integrated into the UFC fold.

That means WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho, WEC Light Heavyweight Champion Steve Cantwell, Chael Sonnen, Brian Stann and several others will soon be fighting inside the Octagon.

It sounds like a win-win all around. Now the promotion just needs to cough up the cash to convince Filho and UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva — who are good friends — to agree to a fight.

Money talks.

Thiago Silva vs Lyoto Machida rescheduled for UFC 93

Posted: 26 Sep 2008 09:16 AM CDT

The monster light heavyweight clash between unbeatens Thiago Silva and Lyoto Machida appears to now be set for UFC 93 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 31, according to Tatame.com.

It was a 205-pound bout that was originally scheduled for UFC 89: “Bisping vs. Leben” on October 18; however, Silva had to withdraw from the contest because of a back injury sustained during training. The cancellation was a bummer because it was a highly anticipated match up between two of the top contenders in the division.

And there was some concern that the injury would scrap the bout altogether, but it appears that it will go down once and for all on Super Bowl weekend.

Machida has won five straight inside the Octagon, including big time bouts against Tito Ortiz, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Kazuhiro Nakamura among others. He's perhaps one of the most difficult fighters to figure out — "The Dragon" has a technical fight style that appears to frustrate his opponents, as well as a few fans who claim he is "boring."

Regardless, he's been knocking on the door of a title shot for some time now. And a win over a bad dude like Silva would certainly improve his chances.

Silva brings the fierce Chute Boxe aggression into his fights (even though he is now no longer with the camp), stopping all but one of his opponents throughout his exciting mixed martial arts career. He has an explosive mix of punches and kicks, which can often leave him open to counter strikes.

However, Silva has proven that he can take punishment and dish out more … just ask Tomasz Drwal, Houston Alexander and Antonio Mendes.

UFC 93 already features the blockbuster showdown between champions Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn. Stay tuned for more UFC 93 rumors and fight card updates.

Rampage Jackson: Michael Bisping could beat Anderson Silva one day

Quoteworthy:

“I’ve been working and training with Michael for a year now, and I have seen improvements consistently; he is already one of the best. He just can’t see it yet. This guy doesn’t know just how good he is. Or how good he can be yet. I think if Michael beats Chris Leben and he fights Dan Henderson next he has the chance to show he is one of the best. If Michael beats and defeats Henderson then he can take on Anderson Silva. Michael has all the qualities to be one the best. He’s better than me at so many things. Michael is a great fighter. He works hard, trains hard, he’s got the potential to be one of the best champions in the sport. He’s also got really good trainers. In the MMA game, anything can happen in a fight. People see Silva as invincible, but Michael could beat Silva one day. There is always a first in this sport.”

Former light heavyweight champion Quinton Rampage Jackson — who now trains full time with top middleweight contender Michael Bisping at Wolfslair MMA Academy in the United Kingdom — feels his team member and friend could defeat UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. The interesting thing here is that he lays out a fight schedule that could groom Bisping for an eventual showdown with “The Spider” after two fights — Chris Leben at UFC 89 and then Dan Henderson. Bisping has been rumored to be a coach on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 opposite Hendo if he can defeat “The Crippler” next month. It makes sense because of the “U.S. vs. U.K.” theme for the next installment of the mixed martial arts reality series on Spike TV. The winner of the bout would then challenge Silva for the 185-pound world title. For that to happen, however, “The Count” has to first defeat Leben, which is no easy task. Check out a video interview with Rampage after the jump.
