UFC spikes competition with knockout ratings

Posted: 19 Sep 2008 10:53 PM CDT

UFC Fight Night 15 came out swinging Wednesday night and garnered the #1 spot among men 18-34, 18-49, 18-24, and 25-34. The Spike telecast drew 913,000 men 18-49 and 465,000 men 18-34 for a combined draw of 1,378,000.

The event from the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska averaged an audience of 1.8 million viewers with a peak of 2.3 million during Nate Diaz’s battle with Josh Neer in the main event.

While Fight Night 15 had a lower peak than July’s Fight Night 14, which peaked with 4.46 million viewers, it should be noted that FN14 was held on a Saturday night and had the luxury of Anderson Silva in the main event.

Still, those numbers were enough to sack the gang at ESPN who went deep with College Football’s Louisville vs. Kansas State game and also struck out the boys at ESPN2 who tried to hit a home run with Baseball’s American League pennant race.

Even combining the two could not submit the UFC and Spike as the all-sports network needed two events to draw 858,000 men 18-49 and 373,000 men 18-34 for a combined draw of 1,231,000.

In addition, the premiere of The Ultimate Fighter 8 ranked #1 with men 18-49 in its time slot with an average audience of 1.6 million viewers.

Not too shabby.

Elite XC strips KJ Noons’ lightweight belt

Quoteworthy:

"We are stripping KJ of his championship belt for refusing to defend against Diaz. It's a very unfortunate situation but we cannot have belt-holders who refuse to fight the top contenders. We want champions who will fight anyone, anytime, anyplace. That's the mentality all champions should have…. I feel very bad for KJ because I like him a lot on a personal level and have always thought he could be a big star. He's charismatic, has a very exciting fighting style and is a top level fighter. So I'm obviously disappointed that he has chosen to take this stance…. KJ has two more fights remaining on his contract, so we are still looking forward to having him fight for us again soon, but not as our world champion.''

Elite XC Head of Fight Operations Jeremy Lappen announces that the promotion has had enough of the back-and-forth with its lightweight champion and has stripped him of his 160-pound belt. Noons defeated Nick Diaz to win the first-ever lightweight championship and then defended the belt just once against Yves Edwards. Diaz — who won several fights during that time to get back in contention — was then labeled the number contender. Noons and his management team didn’t agree, saying that a fighter like Eddie Alvarez was a more worthy opponent. So when Noons refused to fight Diaz at Elite XC: “Heat” on CBS “Saturday Night Fights” on October 4 the promotion apparently felt as if it had no other choice but to use the only ace left up its sleeve. Noons was not cut, but it’s hard to imagine that he would want to continue fighting for the promotion. In the past he’s expressed an interest to box on the professional circuit, which provides him with other opportunities if he so chooses.

UFC 90 fight card complete for ‘Silva vs. Cote’ PPV event October 25

Posted: 19 Sep 2008 02:40 PM CDT

UFC 90 poster
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today finalized four bouts for its first-ever show in Illinois and in the process confirmed the entire official 10-fight line up.

We've already passed along the fight announcements that were made today for UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote," which will take place from Allstate Arena in the Chicago area on Saturday, October 25, 2008.

Therefore, let's have a look at the full (and hopefully final) fight card:

Main event:

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva (22-4) vs. Patrick Cote (13-4)

Main card (Televised):

170 lbs.: Diego Sanchez (19-2) vs. Thiago Alves (15-3)
185 lbs.: Thales Leites (14-1) vs. Goran Reljic (8-0)
265 lbs.: Fabricio Werdum (11-3-1) vs. Junior Dos Santos (6-1)
155 lbs.: Sean Sherk (32-3 –1) vs. Tyson Griffin (12-1)

Under card (May not be broadcast):

155 lbs.: Gray Maynard (5-0) vs. Rich Clementi (32-12-1)
155 lbs.: Spencer Fisher (21-4) vs. Shannon Gugerty (11-2)
185 lbs.: Ricardo Almeida (9-3) vs. Matt Horwich (23-10-1)
155 lbs.: Hermes Franca (18-7) vs. Marcus Aurelio (16-6)
170 lbs.: Pete Sell (7-4) vs. Josh Burkman (9-6)

It's important to note that in addition to the championship main event, there are three bouts on the televised main card that have important title implications — all in different divisions.

The winner of the bout between Sanchez and Alves will likely earn a welterweight title shot in the first half of 2009, Werdum has been guaranteed a title shot with a win (although he may have to wait quite a bit to get it) and Griffin or Sherk will likely rocket to the top of the 155-pound ladder right behind Kenny Florian.

Indeed, several fighters have a lot at stake, which hopefully translates into one action-packed night of mixed martial arts action.

UFC 90 will air live on pay-per-view (PPV), beginning at 10 p.m. ET. For more on the event please visit our archive section right here.

UFC Quick Quote: Nate Marquardt calls out all top middleweight contenders

Posted: 19 Sep 2008 12:06 PM CDT

nate marquardt

“I changed some things technically, but that’s not what it was about for me. It was definitely the mental and the way I approached fights and the way I fight. I used to fight cautious and defensive and now I fight more offensive-minded and aggressive…. I definitely want to fight Anderson [Silva]. I don’t know when I’m going to get that chance, but until then, I would like to fight Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping and anybody else out there that’s a contender.”

– Confident after his brutal domination of Martin Kampmann at UFC 88: “Breakthrough” earlier this month, former number one middleweight contender Nate Marquardt tells FightHype.com that he wants another crack at division kingpin, Anderson Silva. And he’s ready to take on the the best 185-pound fighters in the category, including Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping, to prove that he deserves a second chance. Silva defeated Marquardt at UFC 73: “Stacked” in July 2007 via first round technical knockout. Bisping is already scheduled to face Chris Leben at UFC 89 next month, making a showdown with Henderson the more likely option — there’s simply not a huge pool of challengers atop the division. And one has to imagine that the winner of the bout between Bisping and Leben will next earn a date with the champion because both fighters are so marketable.

Xtreme Couture Toronto and MMACanada.net have teamed up to present a all-day training session and autograph session with former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck “Iceman” Liddell in Toronto, Canada, on October 19, coinciding with UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" event the day prior.

Chuck is coming off arguably the toughest loss of his career at the hands of Rashad Evans via brutal knockout back at UFC 88: "Breakthrough."

Nonetheless, “Iceman” will put it all behind him and put on a seminar at Xtreme Couture on Sunday, October 19 and follow it up with what is expected to be a very busy one-hour meet and greet/autograph signing.

Sponsors of the event include TapouT, Staredown Fight Wear, Redemption Fight Wear, Xyience and The Substance Group.

We will of course pass along a behind the scenes look into Chuck's first visit to the Toronto area since 2004. But for those who want to experience it firsthand and/or purchase tickets please click here.

Sean McManus is the Director of Media Relations for MMACanada.net. For more information on the MMA scene up in Canada check out MMACanada.net.
