Quinton Rampage Jackson vs Wanderlei Silva could happen at UFC 93

The blockbuster light heavyweight match up between Quinton Jackson (28-7) and Wanderlei Silva (32-8-1) will more than likely not happen at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15.

The explosive (and long-rumored) third showdown between "The Axe Murderer" and "Rampage" was expected to co-headline the major pay-per-view (PPV) alongside the showdown between UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar.

We first passed along news of the booking earlier this month right here.

However, it appears that even though bout agreements were distributed to both fighters several factors prevented the fight from taking place, including the legal obligations that “Rampage” must fulfill in November.

The good news is that Jackson and Silva could collide for a third time on the Super Bowl weekend show on January 31 that also features the enormous clash between welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and lightweight kingpin BJ Penn.

There’s an outside chance that it could also go down on December 27 if the PPV needs more juice; however, we’re told that January is the ideal target date.

This, of course, is bad news for UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” event, which is being billed as the “Biggest Fight in UFC History.” The card could now feature a co main event of Kenny Florian against Joe Stevenson — a great fight but certainly not the caliber of Jackson-Silva 3.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Dave ‘Pee Wee’ Herman vs Kerry Schall to headline Elite XC Sho XC event October 10

Posted: 24 Sep 2008 08:27 AM CDT

Elite XC is heading to “The Venue” at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Ind. on Friday, October 10 for Sho XC Challenger Series 9, which will air live on Showtime beginning at 11 p.m ET.

The main event will feature undefeated heavyweight fighter Dave “Pee Wee” Herman (11-0) taking on Kerry “The Meat Truck” Schall (21-10).

Herman’s last two wins have both been under the Elite XC banner against Mario Rinaldi and Ron Waterman, respectively. Both victories were by way of stoppage due to strikes.

“Pee Wee” claims that he trains himself out of his own garage. If that’s true, then he is one heck of a naturally talented fighter. Rinaldi remains the only man to survive the first round with Herman. In each of his other 10 professional fights, he’s been able to dispatch the other man before the first five minute bell, usually with strikes.

He’s a big athletic country boy with a strong wrestling base. Rinaldi had a ridiculously tough time taking him down and Waterman — who is a beast — couldn’t hold him there when he did get him to the mat.

In short, the sky is the limit on Dave Herman’s potential. There’s big things in his future.

“The Meat Truck” was a part of the original cast for The Ultimate Fighter 2, but an injury forced him to leave the show on the first episode. The UFC allowed him to come back and compete on the finale, but he ran into a nasty dose of Keith Jardine leg kicks and lost.

Since then he’s compiled a record of (3-2-1) while competing mostly on the smaller shows.

This is a fight Herman should win and Elite XC is surely looking to showcase its up and coming star, grooming him to possibly challenge for a title sometime in 2009 if he keeps racking up wins.

Cheick Kongo vs Mustafa Al-Turk UFC 92 fight now possible

Posted: 24 Sep 2008 08:12 AM CDT

Cheick Kongo (12-4-1) and Octagon newcomer Mustafa Al-Turk (6-3) will likely meet in a heavyweight match up at UFC 92 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on December 27.

The New Year's Eve weekend showdown was booked after different fights for both competitors recently fell through — Kongo was penciled in to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 before the return of Randy Couture and Turk was set to meet Cain Velasquez at UFC Fight Night 16 before a fresh knee injury sidelined the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) prospect.

Kongo — who often flirts with emerging as a top contender — recently defeated Dan Evensen via technical knockout (strikes) in the first round at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" last month.

It was his fourth win within the eight-sided cage for the Parisian against two losses. He holds notable wins over Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and Assuerio Silva, as well as a damaging split decision loss to Heath Herring earlier this year.

Kongo recently joined Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Michael Bisping and others who train at the Wolfslair MMA Academy in the United Kingdom.

Al-Turk — who fights out of the famous London Shoot gym in the United Kingdom — reportedly just signed a four-fight contract to fight for the UFC after a successful run in Europe on the Cage Rage circuit. In fact, he has six wins in seven attempts for the promotion and is riding a two-fight win streak.

He is a pretty well-rounded fighter with serviceable boxing and solid grappling skills -– good enough to earn him the British Cage Rage heavyweight title.

UFC 92 features another heavyweight bout between interim division champion Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira and Frank Mir, as well as a potential light heavyweight clash between 205-pound champion Forrest Griffin and top contender Rashad Evans.

Ed Soares on Anderson Silva retirement remarks

Quoteworthy:

“Anderson's goal is to retire when he is 35. He still has six fights on his contract and he doesn't turn 35 for another 18 months. I know he will finish his six fights before he considers hanging up his gloves.”

Ed Soares — the manager for UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva — clarifies the wild retirement revelation that the Brazilian made in a recent interview right here. The interesting thing here is that Soares indicates that Silva could consider retirement when he fulfills his contractual obligations and hits the ripe old age of 35. Silva is currently 33 years old, meaning he could very well retire around the time he initially mentioned — we’re talking about perhaps a difference of six or seven months. And if he continues to press UFC President Dana White to be more active it’s possible that he could squeeze in six fights in the next 18 months. The good news is that Silva intends to compete at least six more times inside the Octagon … enjoy them while you can.

Strikeforce paydays and salaries for Playboy Mansion 2 event

cash
The fighter payouts for “Strikeforce at the Mansion II” from the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif., on September 20 have been released by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

And Trevor Prangley — along with lightweight champion Josh “The Punk” Thomson — were the big winners of the evening, pocketing a $40,000 base salaries for their respective wins.

“The Punk” took home $40,000 for just over a minute’s worth of work, while main event competitor Joe “Diesel” Riggs earned the same in a losing effort.

The other top two earners on the card were Terry Martin ($10,000) and Luke Stewart ($8,000) who both finished their respective opponents.

It’s interesting to note that both prized Japanese acquisitions who were making their respectove Strikeforce debuts — Kazuo Misaki and Mitsuhiro Ishida — were paid only $1,400 apiece from Strikeforce.

Obviously, there had to be more money paid upfront or coming from a third party at a later date, considering Misaki was part of the main event — $1,400 wouldn’t even cover the round trip airfare to the “Land of the Rising Sun.”

Nonetheless, here are all the “Strikeforce at the Mansion II” payouts:

Kazuo Misaki: $1,400
Joe Riggs: $20,000
Misaki defeated Riggs via technical knockout (strikes) in round two

Josh Thomson: $40,000 ($20,000 to show, $20,000 to win)
Ashe Bowman: $2,000
Thomson defeated Bowman via technical knockout (strikes) in round one

Terry Martin: $10,000
Cory Devela: $10,000
Martin defeated Devela via technical knockout (strikes) in round three

Mitsuhiro Ishida: $1,400
Justin Wilcox: $5,000
Ishida defeated Wilcox via submission (armbar) in round one

Trevor Prangley: $40,000
Anthony Ruiz: $6,000
Prangley defeated Ruiz via unanimous decision

Luke Stewart: $8,000
Jesse Juarez: $2,000
Stewart defeated Juarez via submission (armbar) in round one

Eric Lawson: $6,000 ($5,500 to show, $500 win)
Kenneth Seegrist: $2,000
Seegrist defeated Lawson via submission (rear naked choke) in round one

Brandon Magana: $2,000
Brandon Thatch: $2,000
Magana defeated Thatch via split decision

Jesse Gillespe: $2,000 ($1,000 to show, $1,000 win)
Dave Martin: $1,000
Gillespe defeated Martin via split decision

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc.

The total base fighter payroll for the event was $160,800.

Chris ‘The Crippler’ Leben: I’m going to make 20,000 people shut-up at UFC 89

Posted: 23 Sep 2008 09:32 PM CDT

UFC middleweight contender Chris Leben was our guest on this weeks broadcast of Pro MMA Radio. Presented by MMAmania.com, Pro MMA Radio airs live every Monday night at 9pm and features many of the top fighters from the UFC and beyond.

‘The Crippler’ didn’t waste any time getting into his fight with Michael Bisping at UFC 89. Leben gives credit to Bisping’s technical approach but isn’t impressed with his power. He also believes people underestimate his (Leben’s) ground game.

Leben predicts he will win by knockout.

Larry asks him about the short stint he did in prison that kept him out of UFC 85 and the story behind choking out one of his fellow inmates.

Chris also talks about his fight with Anderson Silva and how he had it in his head that he was going to knock him out in the first round - and how that mental mistake cost him the fight.

The Ultimate Fighter Season 1 is discussed along with the recent reunion show. Leben is still surprised that Kenny Florian has evolved into such a complete fighter. He also calls Mike Swick ‘crazy’ and says Swick went into an unprovoked and bizarre tirade about a rematch during the reunion show.

Leben pimps his upcoming fighting show and what life is like as a trainer and coach, as well as his other endeavors outside of the UFC.

Finally there’s the infamous car ride he shared with Diego Sanchez and Josh Koscheck. (Click here if you missed it). What does he really think about Kos and Diego? Check out the replay and hear for yourself!

Tug O’ Fedor: Affliction says Emelianenko is only DREAMing about Japan

Posted: 23 Sep 2008 08:56 PM CDT

Give WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko credit because he sure knows how to milk the adulation out of a Japanese crowd.

The former king of PRIDE made a cameo at Tuesday’s DREAM 6 event to answer a challenge from a certain Judokan loudmouth named Satoshi Ishii and to bask in the rays of his Japanese nuthuggers.

Ishii won the gold medal in heavyweight judo last month at the summer Olympics and apparently thinks that qualifies him to challenge the world’s best heavyweight fighter.

I guess he didn’t see what Fedor did to silver medalist Naoya Ogawa at PRIDE Final Conflict back in 2004.

But Fedor, being the good sport that he is, answered the call and mentioned the possibility of facing Ishii at a planned DREAM event for New Year’s Eve.

The only problem is that Fedor’s Affliction contract prevents such a battle, according to MMArated.

From Affliction VP Tom Atencio:

“Fedor was supposed to fight for [DREAM] on New Year’s Eve, but he is not because we extended his contract… Our next show will definitely be the 1st quarter of 2009 in January, possibly February. Nothing is confirmed though.”

Atencio names Emelianenko as the headliner of Affliction’s next event…which could force Fedor to remain stateside during the end of the year bonanza planned by DREAM.

Perhaps Emelianenko knows something we don’t … or maybe he just knows how to psyche up a crowd. Either way, between Ishii, Couture, Affliction and the “Fighting Fedor” reality show, one thing he doesn’t have is a lack of opponents.

‘A Night of Combat II’ to feature several notable fighters October 11

Posted: 23 Sep 2008 02:13 PM CDT

superfights mma
It’s not a “Day of Reckoning,” but it is something.

Even though the Oct. 11 Affliction II card was recently postponed, “Sin City” is still set to host a mixed martial event at the Thomas & Mack Center, which is located on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas, on the same date.

A MMA card called “A Night of Combat II” will be held at the site on Oct. 11., featuring:

Hector “Sick Dog” Ramirez vs. Jesse Forbes
Jay Hieron vs Bryson Kamaka
Mike Pyle vs. Brian Gassaway
John Alessio vs. Gideon Ray
Josh Haynes vs. Steve Byrnes
JJ Mix vs. John Halverson
Patrick “Kui” Gonzalves vs. Ryan Lamareaux
Ian Omalza vs Ryan Hass
Elana Reed vs Stephanie Palmer

It will be Hieron’s first fight since the IFL shut down earlier this year. He was the organization’s welterweight champion. His opponent, Kamaka, is 6-13 and has lost his last three fights.

Pyle is coming off a submission win at Affliction I and had been scheduled to fight at Affliction II. He fights Gassaway, a WEC and UFC veteran.

Haynes appeared on the third season of The Ultimate Fighter, losing in the in the finals to season light heavyweight winner Michael Bisping. Later Haynes gained infamy for his performance on VH1’s Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge, where he competed against other so-called celebrities such as Vanilla Ice and Stephen Baldwin.

The First Night of Combat was held at the Thomas & Mack in June. The event was the first in Nevada that had both boxing and MMA. The evening began with boxing matches broadcast on ESPN Friday Night Fights. Those fights were followed by five MMA bouts.

The public was given free tickets to the event.

It featured the infamous Kim Couture fight, in which her jaw was broken during the first round of a bloodbath loss. Alessio also last fought on that card, winning via submission over Pete Spratt.

Tickets range from $18 to $53 for the nine-fight card. For more details click here.
