UFC Quick Quote: Lyoto Machida on being branded boring

Posted: 05 Dec 2008 08:32 AM CST

“Everyone has their own opinion and I really respect that. I am a martial artist, there is a lot of thought and strategy that goes into the way I fight. Give me time and in the future every one will understand my style. It is like jiu-jitsu in the beginning (UFC 1, 2, 3…), it was boring but now it is necessary. If you don't like it, sorry. I always try to win. For some that is boring, I know, but I am beating the best in the world. After my fights I do not have nothing on my face, no scratches, no bruises. I am like a ghost they can not find me. If that is boring, that is their opinion. But I will be there for long time WINNING. Let everyone underestimate me. I will always be training ready for the next.”

– Undefeated light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida addresses his critics who feel his style is boring in a recent interview with BloodyElbow.com. He has five straight wins inside the Octagon — four of which have gone to decision. He takes on Thiago Silva at UFC 94: “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 31. The winner of that bout will likely earn early title challenger consideration in 2009 along with either Quinton “Rampage” Jackson or Wanderlei Silva. What say you … is the “Dragon” boring or just too good that most casual fans can’t appreciate his elusive style?

Diego Sanchez willing to move to UFC lightweight division

Posted: 04 Dec 2008 08:43 PM CST

diego Sanchez interview
Top welterweight contender Diego Sanchez has informed the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) that he is willing to compete in the 155-pound division if the promotion feels that the 15-pound weight dip is something that it wants to pursue in the future.

“The Nightmare” made the surprise announcement in a MySpace message last night. And MMAmania.com was today able to confirm that the statement is indeed accurate.

Here’s what he had to say:

“I'm back. I'm training hard and will be dropping down to fight at 155. I will keep you all posted on the info of the fight! But I promise you all that I will do my best to win.”

The inaugural The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) middleweight champion has resisted the move in recent past, which makes his latest remarks a bit curious. Especially since he was knocking on the door of a potential 170-pound title shot with a win over Thiago Alves at UFC 90: “Silva vs. Cote” back in October.

Sanchez had to withdraw from the bout, however, because of a rib injury. “The Pitbull” went on to strafe last minute replacement and top player in the division, Josh Koscheck, to score a convincing unanimous decision win.

Perhaps the performance opened his eyes to just how big and powerful several of the fighters in the division really are — Alves, as well as Jon Fitch who he lost to just last year, are guys who hover around 200 pounds outside the Octagon.

Sanchez, on the other hand, is an average-sized welterweight competitor who could make the cut if he made that decision.

Time will tell how this all shakes out … it’s far from official at this time. There are several great fights for him at 155, including a rematch with top division contender Kenny Florian who he blasted in the original TUF finale to win the 185-pound season crown.

Not to mention the current lightweight champion, BJ Penn, could bolt for greener pastures in the welterweight division if he can topple reigning 170-pound kingpin Georges St. Pierre early next year. That would leave the status of the lightweight title in a state of flux and possibly up for grabs once again.

And Sanchez could make a quick run to a championship opportunity with a handful of convincing wins. Or, he could remain at welterweight and attempt to extend his current two-fight win streak against the likes of Fitch, Koscheck, Alves and others.

It’s good to have options.

Xtreme Fighting Championships (XFC) preview for Tampa, Fla., Dec. 5 show

Posted: 04 Dec 2008 06:58 PM CST

Tomorrow night (Friday, December 5) at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida, the organization referred to by Yahoo!Sports as “the best kept secret in the sport” — Xtreme Fighting Championships (XFC) — will host the sixth event of its young history entitled, “Clash of the Continents.”

The XFC is also credited with for holding the attendance record for a mixed martial arts event in Florida, pulling in more 11,000 fans on November 11, 2007, for the inaugural event for the promotion. Neither Elite XC nor the UFC — which have both put on events in the “Sunshine State” since that time — have been able to surpass those numbers if indeed accurate.

XFC 6: “Clash of the Continents” will feature a heavyweight main event between undefeated Chad Corvin (3-0) and South African native Rico Hattingh (1-1).

The co-featured fight of the night is a lightweight title match between champion John “The Mulatto Mauler” Mahlow (11-9) and UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira’s protege, Luis “Baboon” Palomino (6-3).

Here’s what Nogueira had to say about his pupil:

“Luis had a pair of losses and didn't really understand the intricacies of MMA before I began working with him, which makes sense when you realize that he never competed as an amateur before turning pro. But the progress we've made at the Team Nogueira training facility in Miami is just incredible; his striking prowess and overall knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu grows almost daily. Luis is currently riding a five-fight winning streak, and despite our size difference, he's the one fighter I always want to spar with whenever I'm preparing for a bout. He's that good, and I'm proud to have him as my protege.”

The XFC bantamweight championship will also be decided on the card as Haender Rodriguez meets Jason “Good As Gold” Goodall for the right to claim the vacant title.

Also worth noting is 37-year-old WIBF female boxing champion Chevelle “Fists of Steel” Hallback will be making her mixed martial arts debut against Melissa “The Cat Killer” Vasquez in a 135-pound contest.

Here’s the full lineup for tomorrow night’s festivities:

Main event:

265 lbs.: Chad Corvin (3-0) vs. Rico Hattingh (1-1)

Rest of the card:

155 lbs.: XFC lightweight champion John “The Mulatto Mauler” Mahlow (11-9) vs. Luis “Baboon” Palomino (6-3)
205 lbs.: Brett Chism (6-4) vs. CT “The Hulk” Turner (3-0)
135 lbs.: Melissa “The Cat Killer” Vasquez (4-4) vs. Chevelle “Fists of Steel” Hallback (0-0)
135 lbs.: Haender Rodriguez (4-3) vs. Jason “Good As Gold” Goodall (4-0) for the vacant XFC bantamweight title
145 lbs.: Horacio “The Warrior” Rodriguez (0-0) vs. Sky Moiseichik (0-0)
265 lbs.: Scott “The Bear” Barrett (2-0) vs. Donavin “Bam Bamz” Hawkey (10-1)
185 lbs.: Reuben Millhausen (2-0) vs. Mark “Baby Hulk” Serkez (5-3)
155 lbs.: Donny “High Intensity” Wallace (3-0) vs. Frank “Frankie Knuckles” Santore (3-0)
185 lbs.: Scott Porter (0-0) vs. Chris “The Professional” Davis (1-0)
155 lbs.: Eric “Wolverine” Florez (1-1) vs. Troy Gerhart (2-0)

MMAmania.com will be in attendance tomorrow night for what looks to be a solid lineup of mixed martial arts action. We’ll provide up to the minute results beginning at around 6:30 p.m. ET. If you’re in the area be sure to stop in and check it out — tickets can still be had at TicketMaster.com for as low as $20.

Information for live streaming of the event online can be found at MMAXFC.com.

WEC fighter paydays and bonus awards for ‘Torres vs Tapia’

Posted: 04 Dec 2008 03:11 PM CST

MMAmania.com has received the fighter payouts for WEC 37: “Torres vs. Tapia” from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for the promotion’s year-end event held on Wednesday, December 3 at “The Joint” at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres was the big winner on the night. Not only did he retain his championship gold, but he also earned the most scratch with a $44,000 paycheck for just over a round and a half worth of work.

His opponent, Manny Tapia, was the eighth lowest paid fighter out of 20 competitors who were in action on the WEC 37 card. He took home a $6,000 payday and a nice shiner to boot.

Main card winners Brian Bowles ($16,000), Wagnney Fabiano ($22,000) and Joseph Benavidez ($17,000) were also rewarded for their respective winning efforts.

It’s also worth noting that each of the 10 winners on the night came into their respective bouts as favorites, which is very unusual for a mixed martial arts event.

Without further delay here are the full WEC 37 payouts:

Mike Budnik - $4,000
Shane Roller defeats Mike Budnik via submission (guillotine choke) at 1:01 of round one

Keep in mind the salaries listed above do not include fight bonuses, sponsorships, percentages and other unofficial payments. It also does not include deductions for expenses such as insurance, taxes, etc.

For example, the WEC often hands out extra cash for "Fight of the Night," "Knockout of the Night" and "Submission of the Night."

In fact, the under card bout between featherweights Cub Swanson and Hiroyuki Takaya, which went the full three rounds, earned “Fight of the Night” honors. Brian Bowles’ third round finish of Will Ribeiro with a guillotine choke earned him “Submission of the Night” accolades, and Bart Paleszewski’s second round stoppage of Alex Karalexis was good enough for the “Knockout of the Night.”

Swanson, Takaya, Bowles and Paleszewski each pocketed an extra $7,500 for their respective efforts, according to MMA Experts Blog.

The total base fighter payroll for the event was $219,000.

Ladies and gentleman … your new Strikeforce light heavyweight champion:

Chuck Liddell: Fighting Randy Couture for a fourth time ‘doesn’t make sense’

Posted: 04 Dec 2008 11:53 AM CST

Props: YouTube.com

Quoteworthy:

“The rumor that me and Randy are fighting in June … no one said a word to me. And I don’t want to wait until June to fight. So we’ll see what happens. We’ll have to talk to Dana [White] about that and see what the plans are. But I haven’t heard anything about it. I don’t know where it came from or who was talking about it. To me at this point it doesn’t make sense.”

Former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture is not the only one puzzled by the rumored match up against Chuck Liddell at UFC 99 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany on June 13. “The Iceman” also admits he has not been approached about a fourth fight with “The Natural.” He goes one step further and affirms what most fans have said since it cropped up — it doesn’t make sense (even though it could make cents). Liddell has lost three of his last four bouts — two of which were in devastating fashion. He is eager to get back in the Octagon sometime around March, which would put him on the UFC 96 card in Columbus, Ohio. He does not mention any possible opponents but does rule out another rumor: that he will fight Anderson Silva at UFC 95 in February. Well at least we now know who he won’t be fighting … not unless it (Couture) happens for some reason before June.
