Xtreme Fighting Championships (XFC) to partner with MTVs ‘Made’

Posted: 11 Dec 2008 08:39 PM CST

Tampa, FL: Xtreme Fighting Championships (XFC) is the Southeastern-based Mixed Martial Arts promotion dedicated to launching the careers of the next generation of cage warriors. MTV's reality TV series "MADE," now in its ninth season, follows the journey of young men and women hoping to fulfill a lifelong dream.

For the first time ever, MTV will film a young adult working to break into the Mixed Martial Arts — and XFC is the organization that will train, prepare and give this person his or her big break at XFC 8 in Knoxville, Tennessee's 21-thousand capacity Thompson-Boling Arena on April 18, 2009.

"Everyone from Snoop Dogg to Tony Hawk to The Game has appeared on 'MADE,' helping young men and women from all walks of life make their dreams come true," said XFC president John Prisco from the XFC offices in Tampa, Florida. "With the explosive popularity of MMA, countless young athletes are aspiring to emulate the superstars they cheer and follow in this sport. We're excited about partnering with MTV to share with the rest of America all the hard work, dedication, and unbreakable discipline it takes to succeed in the ultra-competitive world of steel cage combat."

XFC is offering an open tryout to all young men and women hoping to break into the Mixed Martial Arts, and will choose at least one participant to train at its facilities and fight before thousands of fans at XFC 8 in April. MTV will film the entire process from start to completion. The show is scheduled to air exclusively on MTV in 2009.

John Prisco added that XFC's coaches and trainers were assured that they'd retain the right to decide which participants will appear on MTV. "This was an important concession MTV made to us, but we wanted to ensure that our sport is fairly and accurately portrayed on TV. There are still so many misconceptions about MMA in mainstream America, and we're tremendously excited about the opportunity to demonstrate to MTV's audience exactly how hard our athletes work and train."

XFC's open tryouts will be taking place at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 13 at the XFC training facilities in Tampa, Florida. The address is: 10509 North Nebraska Avenue, Unit 6, Tampa, FL 33612. For more information, please call 813.971.1215.

Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral vs Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou Affliction fight booked for ‘Day of Reckoning’

Posted: 11 Dec 2008 08:17 PM CST

It didn’t take long for the “African Assassin” to find a new home.

Affliction MMA today announced that it has picked up Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and will pit him against Renato “Babalu” Sobral in a light heavyweight attraction at “Day of Reckoning” at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on January 24.

Sokoudjou — who burst onto the scene back in the Pride FC heyday with impressive knockout wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona — was recently cut by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The Team Quest-trained fighter struggled inside the Octagon, losing twice in three attempts.

He was most recently pounded out by Luis Cane in the second round at UFC 89: “Bisping vs. Leben” back in October. The talented Cameroonian striker and Judokan is just 24 years old. He has a tendency in recent fights to oured it on thick in the opening minutes of his fights and the fade fast as time elapses.

Sokoudjou will need to fix that if he has any chance of defeating the experienced and dangerous Brazilian.

"Babalu" was originally scheduled to take on Matt Lindland on this card at a catchweight of 195 pounds. That decision, however, was soon reversed when "Babalu" stopped Bobby Southworth a few weeks ago to capture the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship.

Lindland will now take on Vitor Belfort on the televised pay-per-view (PPV) card.

"Babalu" is fresh of a technical knockout win over Southworth in the co-main event of Strikeforce: "Destruction" from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., just last month. Southworth sustained a nasty cut over his right eye courtesy of a Sobral elbow. While he finished the round, the ringside physician would not clear him to continue, effectively declaring Sobral the winner and king of the Strikeforce light heavies.

"Day of Reckoning," which was originally slated to go down on October 11, 2008, before being postponed, will feature one of the most anticipated fights in the history of the sport between WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC title holder Andrei Arlovski.

Prior to the PPV broadcast, which will be produced and distributed by Showtime Networks Inc. in conjunction with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, several fights will be televised on the HDNet channel.

In fact, a light heavyweight tilt between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Vladimir Matyushenko will headline the televised HDNet preliminary card that will serve as a lead in to the PPV event, which is slated to begin at 9 p.m. ET on fight night.

UFC Fight Night 16 injuries and medical suspensions; Corey Hill out up to 18 months

Posted: 11 Dec 2008 08:00 PM CST

ufc 86 medical suspensions
MMAmania.com today received the list of medical suspensions from the North Carolina Boxing Authority in the wake of UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops" from the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville on December 10.

Of course, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 alum, Corey Hill, is the most serious case on the list. He sustained a gruesome leg fracture in the second round of his preliminary bout against Dale Hartt. Today he underwent surgery to repair the damage at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

According to an update on UFC.com, Hill is “handling the injury well and is in good spirits.” He will be on the mend for about 12 to 18 months. All things considered, it’s great news to hear that it appears he will make a full recovery.

Razak Al-Hassan — who refused to tap from a tight Steve Cantwell armbar — was treated for a dislocated elbow and released from the hospital. It’s safe to say that his situation could have been much worse based on the graphic video replays of the submission.

He has been slapped with an indefinite medical suspension and will be unable to return until he receives medical clearance from and orthopedic surgeon.

Here's the rest of the "Fight for the Troops" injuries and their medical instructions:

Brandon Wolff – Suspended for at least 45 days because of a head contusion/hematoma

Nate Loughran – Suspended for at least 30 days because of lacerations.

Jonathan Goulet — Suspended for at least 60 days. He must have his left elbow x-rayed and cleared by an orthopedic physician before returning to action.

Yoshiyuki Yoshida – Suspended for at least 90 days because of a severe concussion.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Anderson Silva will not headline UFC 95 in London

Posted: 11 Dec 2008 03:31 PM CST

anderson silva
With less than 10 weeks until fight night, UFC 95, which is scheduled to take place from The O2 in London, England, on February 21, still remains without a main event, according to WrestlingObserver.com.

Perhaps more alarming is that the early candidate to headline at least one half of the pay-per-view (PPV) show, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, has informed the promotion that he will not be ready to compete on that date.

Therefore, a possible match up between the "Spider" and Thales Leites has been scrapped.

UFC 95 — the fourth event of 2009 for the UFC and the second in as many months to be held in Europe — will take place just two weeks after UFC Fight Night 17 (February 7), three after UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" (January 31) and little more than two weeks before UFC 96 in Columbus, Ohio (March 7).

That's a ton of programming in a short amount of time. And if the promotion can't secure a solid draw atop the card it's very likely that most fight fans might pass on the tape-delayed PPV purchase.

In addition, fans in the area who have already purchased tickets are more than likely expecting at least one marquee name to be added to the fight card sooner rather than later.

The good news is that if there's anyone in the business who can pull it off it's Dana White and the Ultimate fighting Championship.

Report: UFC 91 PPV buys top 1 million — second biggest haul ever for promotion

Posted: 11 Dec 2008 12:42 PM CST

It was billed as the “biggest fight in UFC history.”

And if pay-per-view (PPV) buys are the barometer for success then UFC 91: “Couture vs. Lesnar” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15 appears to have been just that … almost.

Dave Meltzer from WrestlingObserver.com, which several weeks ago projected a buy rate of about 800,000 based on early trends, now reports that “Couture vs. Lesnar” scored about 1,010,000 buys. Therefore, UFC 91 falls just shy of the mark set by UFC 66 in 2006, which featured a showdown between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz, netting the record for most buys with around 1,050,000.

Cha-ching!

We’re not mathematicians, but is you multiply the PPV by number by around $44.95 then you have a pretty juicy profit. And that doesn’t even count tickets sales, merchandise, etc.

Accordingly, UFC 91 should be considered a massive win for the promotion — especially when you consider the current state of the economy.

It also clearly indicates that new UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar is a box office drawing behemoth, bringing in a whole new legion of interested of viewers thanks in large part to his days as a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar not too long ago.

UFC 91 sold 10,845 tickets for a live gate $4,815,675, according to The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) . The promotion dished out $1,118,000 in UFC 91 fighter salaries for the pay-per-view (PPV) event, as well as $240,000 in additional bonus money for four participants who delivered outstanding performances.

Lesnar defeated Randy Couture via second round technical knockout to capture the heavyweight crown in the UFC 91 main event. Kenny Florian toppled Joe Stevenson with a first round submission in the co-featured bout of the evening, reinforcing his position as the clearcut number one title contender in the 155-pound division.

In fact, UFC President Dana White guaranteed Florian a title shot against lightweight champion BJ Penn in the near future. However, he may have to wait his turn because Penn — if he defeats Georges St. Pierre on January 31 to regain his welterweight title — will first fight Thiago Alves in a 170-pound title fight.

UFC Quick Quote: Yoshiyuki Yoshida released from hospital after knockout loss

Posted: 11 Dec 2008 10:52 AM CST

“Tokyo's Yoshida, who remained on the canvas while being tended to by commission doctors, was removed from the Octagon on a stretcher as a precautionary measure. He was later treated and released from a local hospital for a concussion.”

– Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today provided a medical update on Yoshiyuki Yoshida via its Web site. “Zenko” was brutally knocked unconscious last night during his main event welterweight tilt against Josh Koscheck at UFC Fight Night 16: “Fight for the Troops” and was wheeled out of the Octagon on a stretcher as a precautionary measure. It was the first time ever the super tough Japanese standout was put to sleep. It was also the first time ever Koscheck scored such a decisive finish. Unfortunately, the result was the culmination of a night of carnage — Corey Hill (leg), Razak Al-Hussan (elbow/arm), Brandon Wolff (head) and Jonathan Goulet (head/knee) all sustained rather serious injuries. Get well soon.
