UFC 92 bonuses and awards for ‘The Ultimate 2008’ PPV fights

Posted: 28 Dec 2008 02:04 AM CST

UFC 92: "The Ultimate 2008" from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, has come to a close.

The highly anticipated main event between "Sugar" Rashad Evans and Forrest Griffin earned “Fight of the Night” for the action-packed battle that was fairly even until Evans dropped Griffin in the opening seconds of round three and finished him off with some ferocious ground and pound.

While Wanderlei Silva was an early favorite for knockout of the night (at least in his mind), that honor went to former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson. “Rampage” scored his revenge - along with some cold, hard cash for his devastating KO of his former PRIDE nemesis.

“The Ultimate 2008″ ended without a submission so no bonus was awarded in that category.

Overall, it was an exciting card with only two of the ten bouts going the distance. The fighters honored below definitely deserved a little extra cash for their outstanding performances.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 92:

Knockout of the Night — Quinton “Rampage” Jackson

Submission of the Night – N/A

Fight of the Night — Rashad Evans vs. Forrest Griffin

Each fighter received $60,000 for their efforts in addition to their respective base salaries, which is not too shabby considering the shaky economy … the promotion is apparently not holding back on the generosity.

Oh what a night! UFC 92 recap and final thoughts

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) tonight put a ribbon its 2008 fight season with “The Ultimate 2008,” featuring another stacked offering with a title doubleheader atop the loaded main card.

It all took place from none other than Las Vegas, Nevada, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The main card action began with a heavyweight bout between Cheick Kongo and Octagon newcomer Mustafa Al-Turk … or that was the plan, anyway.

Al-Turk — a former Cage Rage heavyweight champion — pulled a card out of Kongo’s playbook when he went up against Mirko Cro Cop, smashing his balls with an errant knee.

Karma is a bitch.

Kongo winced in pain and needed time to recover — just enough to get his wind and return the favor shortly thereafter.

Al-Turk took a little breather of his own … but not long enough.

Kongo stormed the Lebanese-born fighter and overwhelmed him with punches and vicious ground strikes, opening up a gash on Al-Turk and putting him on Queer Street.

It was a painful-looking stoppage. And it more than likely put the Parisian once again on the map as a division contender heading into 2009.

Just when we all thought the highly anticipated bout between CB Dolloway and Mike Massenzio was on deck, Wanderlei Silva’s club music began blaring over the loudspeakers.

The third showdown between the Brazilian striker and former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was finally about to begin.

And it didn’t last long.

Ringside announcer Joe Rogan must have been on a loop, saying ad nauseum that Jackson was a new fighter since his two losses to Silva under the Pride FC banner and a recent move to the Wolfslaire Academy in Manchester, England.

That may have been the understatement of 2008.

Jackson took the center of the Octagon from the get-go, peppering Silva with jabs and missing on a huge overhand right. The left, however, had different results … HUGE results.

He planted a monster punch right on the kisser that put Silva out cold the moment the leather touched his jaw. Jackson pounced and gave him three more shots while he was literally twitching on the canvas just for good measure.

Referee Yves Lavigne peeled the werewolf off the comatose “Axe Murderer ” and Jackson had his long awaited revenge. And it was a dish the was downright cold.

It was hard to tell if the extra blows were to send a message or just heat of the moment. Regardless, Dana White will more than likely be cutting a check to Jackson in the dressing room for “Knockout of the Night” despite Silva’s pre-fight prediction.

Wow. Welcome back, Quinton. He more than likely exorcised countless demons with one crushing swoop.

“The Doberman” was let loose next, attempting to topple Massenzio once again — the pair first met several years back on the junior college wrestling circuit with Dollaway getting the nod.

Massenzio entered the Octagon with what appeared to be an artificial leg. It had more tape on it than a ticker. But it didn’t appear to affect his performance early in the first round. He buzzed the former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 while standing and nearly put him away with a tight guillotine from the bottom.

Dolloway survived and quickly reversed. He eventually secured full mount, which caused Massenzio to give up his back. Dolloway boxed the ears until the referee was forced to jump in and save a motionless Massenzio.

He immediately protested the stoppage and appeared to be fine, but he did nothing to show that he was okay with the Doberman mounted on his back.

Dollaway clearly sounded pleased with the win in the post-fight interview. It also sounded like he got kneed in the balls about a thousand times.

Whatever … time for the top two title fights of the evening!

So much for the invincible aura of former Pride FC heavyweight champion and UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. The “mythological monster” was finished for the first time ever in his illustrious career by none other than Frank Mir.

Mir admitted in the post-fight interview after the improbable finish that he had never been more scared to enter the Octagon than he was tonight. It didn’t show.

The former heavyweight champion knocked Nogueira down three times with crisp stand up, refusing to follow him to the canvas. That’s quite a gameplan, considering that Mir like Nogueira is a Brazlian jiu-jitsu black belt.

No good deed in the UFC, however, goes unpunished. Now he gets the unenviable task of rematching current division behemoth, Brock Lesnar.

What a crazy turn of events — most “experts” prior to November 15 would have said that Randy Couture (the man Lesnar defeated) and Nogueira were locks to meet in 2009 to unify the belts.

Not the case. Not even close. Welcome to mixed martial arts and Frank Mir 2.0.

How about an encore?

Rashad Evans became the third winner of TUF to become a UFC champion. “Sugar” and Forrest Griffin went toe-to-toe for two action-packed rounds and the fight was seemingly even heading into the third frame.

Evans dropped Griffin in the opening seconds and the XTreme Couture-trained fighter — who appeared to recover — could not escape the relentless (and brutal) ground and pound.

He sustained about 10 killer head bouncers that had his body flailing … not tapping, according to Griffin after the fight.

It was a great performance by both fighters once again. But Evans was the better man tonight and continues the revolving door of champions in the 205-pound division.

Will it continue in 2009? Can “Rampage” reclaim his crown or will it be the winner of the bout between Thiago Silva and Lyoto Machida? Has Evans finally shucked the label as a showboater and earned the reputation as a finisher?

He should.

Nonetheless, buckle your seat belts and find out in the New Year. It promises to be yet another mind-boggling, bumpy and exciting fight season.

Happy New Year fight fans!

UFC Quick Quote: Brock Lesnar vs Frank Mir rematch to declare undisputed champion

Posted: 27 Dec 2008 11:54 PM CST

“Im looking for Frank Mir. I need a rematch with Frank.”

– UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar talks before the fight between Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira and Frank Mir about who he wants next. Wish granted — Mir pulled yet another rabbit out of his hat to score an awesome technical knockout win over the legendary Brazilian, punching his ticket in the finals of the mini four-man tournament opposite Lesnar. Mir and Lesnar first met earlier this year at UFC 81: “Breaking Point.” The former champion — and now reigning interim titlist — ate about 30 hamhocks before cinching in a fight-ending kneebar. Will history repeat itself or will Lesnar score revenge in Act II?

UFC Quick Quote: Dana White welcomes Brock Lesnar vs Fedor Emelianenko

Posted: 27 Dec 2008 08:43 AM CST

fedor affliction press conference

“God, I hope so. That’s not up to me. I can only try so much. There’s only so much I can do.”

– UFC President Dana White — who recently participated in a great live chat over at MMA Fanhouse — reveals that he is still interested in former Pride FC demigod and current WAMMA Heavyweight Champion, Fedor Emelianenko. White has often referred to him as a “farce,” yet has attempted multiple times to bring him into the UFC fray. The “crazy” Russian handlers who manage him, however, have reportedly demanded too much, including the freedom to participate in the World Combat Sambo championships. Emelianenko is set to defend his title against Andrei Arlovski at Affliction: “Day of Reckoning” on January 24 and Lesnar will compete sometime in early 2009 against the winner of tonight’s bout between Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira and Frank Mir. After Lesnar defeated Couture to win the belt last month, Emelianenko’s American mouthpiece Jerry Millen issued a statement that former professional wrestler wouldn’t “make it out of the first round” against the “Last Empereor.” It’s more than likely time to put up or shut up.
