Georges St. Pierre named ‘Canadian Athlete of the Year’ 2008 in landslide

Posted: 22 Dec 2008 01:53 PM CST

Props: SportsNet.ca

Quoteworthy:

“It’s an honour for me to have this award and being the first MMA guy to receive something like this. I want to congratulate the other nominees because they have done an incredible job in their respective sports, making this an even more special honour…. I want to thank everybody for their support and voting for me — I want to be a good Canadian ambassador for the sport and represent MMA well.”

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre responds to being named the 2008 Canadian Athlete of the Year by SportsNet.ca voters in a week-long competition, defeating hockey player Jarome Iginla, Paralympian Chantal Petitclerc, tennis player Daniel Nestor and baseball player Justin Morneau. “Rush” received a resounding 89 percent of the votes. He will defend his 170-pound title at UFC 94: “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ on January 31. For more on this award click here.

UFC 94 card fights confirmed for ‘St. Pierre vs Penn 2′ Jan. 31

Posted: 22 Dec 2008 01:31 PM CST

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today confirmed several bouts for its humongous pay-per-view (PPV) event scheduled for Super Bowl weekend at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 31, 2009.

UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ features the welterweight superfight between former 170-pound champion and current lightweight kingpin BJ Penn versus reigning welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, as well as the highly anticipated showdown between light heavyweight unbeatens Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva.

The mega card also includes the returns of Stephan Bonnar and Karo Parisyan from respective injuries that kept them out of action for several months apiece.

And former number one contender Jon Fitch — who just headlined UFC 87: “Seek and Destroy” opposite St. Pierre — will look to get back in the title chase when he takes on Akihiro Gono in a fight that is not guaranteed to be televised.

That doesn’t make much sense — perhaps the card is just that stacked or it’s retribution for the 24-hour contractual fracas the went down last month.

Here is the complete UFC 94 line up:

Main event:

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre vs. UFC Lightweight Champion B.J. Penn in a 170-pound title bout

Main card (Televised):

205 lbs.: Lyoto Machida (13-0) vs. Thiago Silva (13-0)
205 lbs.: Stephan Bonnar (11-4) vs. Jon Jones (6-0)
155 lbs.: Nate Diaz (10-2) vs. Clay Guida (24-9)
170 lbs.: Karo Parisyan (18-5) vs. Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim (11-0-1)

Under card (May not be broadcast):

170 lbs.: Jon Fitch (17-3) vs. Akihiro Gono (29-13-7)
155 lbs.: Manny Gamburyan vs. Thiago Tavares
155 lbs.: Chris Wilson (14-4) vs. John Howard (10-4)
265 lbs.: Jake O'Brien vs. Christian Wellisch
170 lbs.: Matt "No Regard" Arroyo (3-2) vs. Daniel Cramer (0-0)

MMA Quick Quote: Gilbert Melendez mulls move to UFC

Posted: 22 Dec 2008 10:27 AM CST

"I have one fight left with Strikeforce. Right now, I'm really happy with them…. There is the possibility I could stay there with them, but I don't know, we will see how it goes. The UFC has always been a big dream of mine. The UFC is a great organization. I love that show. But MMA is a business now and I have got to make sure things are in my best interest. The fighter in me wants to just go to the UFC and just go test myself with everyone. I'm under contract right now part of my contract is we cannot discuss it so I wouldn't do that. But I hope and believe they are interested. It's something I would consider. At the end of the day I'm a fighter and I have a life so I have to do what is in the best interest for me."

– Top-ranked lightweight and former Strikeforce 155-pound champion, Gilbert Melendez, talks about a possible move to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) once his contract with Strikeforce expires. In the meantime, the talented 26-year-old Cesar Gracie-trained mixed martial artist is clamoring for a rematch against Mitsuhiro Ishida. Melendez — along with training partner Jake Shields — are highly coveted free agents (sorta and almost, respectively) who could make find themselves competing inside the Octagon in 2009 sooner rather than later. However, Strikeforce is currently the only promotion to have a relationship with a major national broadcast network (NBC), which could be an ace up its sleeve heading into the New Year. There is a real possibility for fighters to get insane exposure to a massive nationwide audience if the promotion can grow its partnership to include live shows on the Peacock Network. That’s the business side of things.

Fields Dynamite!! Bob Sapp vs Kinniku Mantaro

Posted: 22 Dec 2008 09:09 AM CST

Naturally no Japanese fighting event would be complete without the addition of the occasional freak show.

In a bizarre (but certainly expected) twist, Bob 'The Beast' Sapp will take on none other than a character from a Japanese anime show.

The character in question is 'Kinniku Mantaro' from the show 'Ultimate Muscle'. Mantaro is known to start matches off slowly and act a bit of a coward in the TV show until his opponent acts dishonorably (as Sapp does from time to time). Then Mantaro gets his inner strength and hulks up or something along those lines.

Now obviously someone's going to be behind the mask and costume. That person will be Japanese amateur wrestling prospect Akihito Tanaka, so perhaps some skill will be involved and it won't be a total squash match.

Sapp relies on his size when fighting and not so much technical prowess but in Tanaka's case how do you out wrestle someone who weighs 350lbs?

And if that freak show announcement didn't wet your appetite and you wanted more, then maybe Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic vs. 7′ 2″ 'Techno Goliath' Hong Man-Choi will since it’s now officially confirmed by FEG.

Fields Dynamite!! is the New Year's Eve supershow featuring a smorgasbord of fighters under the umbrella of FEG coming together on one night to try and kick the crap out of each other.

Featuring participants from DREAM, K-1, K-1 MAX and K-1 Koshien, Fields Dynamite!! is going to have a wide variety of fighting styles and compelling match-ups, and could feature as many as 20 fights.

Thus far it appears as though FEG is holding up their end of the bargain.

Here is the scheduled card to date:

MMA RULES :

Heavyweight: Jerome LeBanner (3-1-1) vs. Mark Hunt (5-4)
Heavyweight: Semmy Schilt (25-14-1) vs. Mighty Mo (3-0)

Brandon Vera vs Mike Patt UFC 96 fight possible March 7

Posted: 22 Dec 2008 09:04 AM CST

Brandon Vera — loser of three of his last four bouts — is expected to return to action against Mike Patt at UFC 96 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7, according to FiveOuncesOfPain.com.

"The Truth" is a former heavyweight fighter who was considered a possible title contender until sustaining back-to-back losses to Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum. He made the drop to light heavyweight quickly thereafter and scored a unanimous decision win over Reese Andy at UFC Fight Night 14.

He, however, did not remain in the win column for very long.

Vera returned against Keith Jardine at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" on October 25, losing a lackluster split decision. It was a big blow — Vera was uncharacteristically speechless after the fight regarding his performance.

He has apparently now reworked his contract (his $100,000 to win, $100,000 to show perhaps became a tad too steep) and will look to re-establish himself as a top fighter in the New Year against a challenger that Vera should — on paper — steamroll.

Patt filled-in for an injured James Lee on short notice to take on Tim Boetsch at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" back in September. It marked his Octagon debut … and one that he more than likely would have liked to have soon forgotten — "The Barbarian" clubbed him en route to a first round technical knockout.

Patt is a three-fight Bodog Fight veteran who has won eight of his last 10 professional mixed martial arts bouts. Prior to the loss to Boetsch, the Ohio native had competed just three weeks before taking the fight. He submitted Jarred Taylor at an Urban Rumble Championship (URC) show in the first round.
