Nate Diaz vs Clay Guida UFC 94 fight booked

Posted: 05 Dec 2008 10:54 PM CST

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 lightweight winner Nate Diaz (10-2) will indeed battle Clay Guida (24-9) at UFC 94: “St. Pierre vs. Penn 2,” which is scheduled for the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 31, according to GracieFighter.com.

The 155-pound competitors were previously penciled in to collide at TUF 8 Finale on December 12; however, the bout fell through because of a foot injury sustained by “The Carpenter” in training.

It was apparently a fight worth waiting for and is now set to take place on the monster Super Bowl weekend pay-per-view (PPV) show.

Diaz has been nothing short of brilliant inside the cage since his stint on TUF, stopping four out of his five most recent opponents and defeating them all. He most recently headlined UFC Fight Night 15 last month against Josh Neer and the two put on an action-packed three-round show for the fans.

He’s clearly ready to graduate and take on the top contenders in the 155-pound division in 2009. Diaz’s mixed martial arts skills are well beyond his 23 years on this planet — he appears to get better and better each time out.

It’s scary. But he’ll need to come in top shape if he intends to topple the lightweight cardio machine known as Clay Guida.

Guida, believe it or not, has an average record (3-3) inside the Octagon. That record, however, doesn’t paint a totally accurate picture because he has been involved in several close fights, which he arguably should have won (Tyson Griffin) or was on the brink of victory (Roger Huerta) before having it snatched away in the final round.

He most recently defeated TUF 6 winner Mac Danzig via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 15 in typical Guida fashion, frustrating and outworking the vegan mixed martial arts veteran. Guida will look to add another TUF champion to his hit list in little more than a month … back-to-back.

UFC 94 will feature the welterweight superfight between former 170-pound champion and current lightweight kingpin BJ Penn versus reigning welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, as well as the highly anticipated showdown between light heavyweight unbeatens Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva.

Frank Mir training to take ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira the distance at UFC 92

Quoteworthy:

“If I catch Nogueira and he falls down and for some reason I knock him out or I catch him in a kneebar or some kind of choke and I happen to finish him, I’m going to go for it, but I haven’t trained expecting it. I’ve really expected that this fight is going to be a 25-minute fight. If anything my strategy has been more geared towards making sure I win convincingly on the judges’ score cards. Looking at how judges score fights, what counts for points, what do they look for? I’ve geared my training that way because trying to finish Nogueira is not easy. You see the size of Heath Herring’s leg — he took that upside his head, it dropped him, but he was still in the fight. He was able to recover and he made it back and won the fight.”

Former heavyweight champion Frank Mir understands full well just how hard (if not impossible) it is to finish interim division titlist Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira. His resilience is the stuff of legend. Accordingly, Mir intends to inflict as much damage as possible during their encounter at UFC 92: “The Ultimate 200″ at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on December 27 to score with the judges just in case the five-round fight makes it to a decision. Good plan? And perhaps more important … can he pull it off?

Cung Le mania on NBC this Saturday night

cung le donruss
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Strikeforce World Middleweight (185 lb. limit) Champion, Cung Le, will seize the spotlight during an all-new "Strikeforce on NBC" episode on Saturday night.

The special, 30-minute program, devoted entirely to the one-of-a-kind knockout artist, will showcase Le's stoppages of Mike Altman and "Mr. Unbreakable" Brian Warren and will revisit his crushing knockouts of "The Ultimate Fighter" season three veteran, Sam "The Squeeze" Morgan, and Tony "The Freak" Fryklund.

Also included in the show is a feature segment that touches on the personal life of Le, who fled a war-torn Vietnam, just days before the fall of Saigon, as a baby in his mother's arms in 1975.

Le's victories over Altman and Warren were ranked number one and two, respectively, according to the results of an online poll that gave fans the opportunity to vote for their all-time favorite Strikeforce knockout on the promotion's official Web site, www.strikeforce.com, last week.

A former junior college and high school wrestling star, Le has pioneered the Chinese stand-up fighting art of San Shou, which aided his run to a perfect 16-0 record in the sport of professional kickboxing and an International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) world championship. His kickboxing conquests, which included three victories in K-1 North America "Superfights," have aired repeatedly on ESPN and ESPN2.

Two years after making his highly-anticipated mixed martial arts (MMA) debut, Le notched what is undoubtedly the greatest win of his career — a third round TKO of former UFC middleweight champion and MMA legend, Frank Shamrock on March 29th of this year. The live SHOWTIME televised victory earned Le the Strikeforce middleweight crown.

Le recently returned home from a two month stay in Berlin, where he completed his third acting stint for the silver screen, a supporting role in the science fiction thriller, "Pandorum," which co-stars award-winning actors Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma, Alpha Dog). The film is slated for release next fall.

“Strikeforce on NBC,” the first 52-week mixed martial arts series in network television history, airs every Saturday, immediately following NBC's hit poker tournament series, “Poker After Dark” (check local listings). MMA legend Ken Shamrock and award-winning ESPN announcer, Lon McEachern, co-host each program and provide expert, play-by-play commentary.

War of nutrition: Quick steps to complete muscle recovery

Posted: 05 Dec 2008 12:04 PM CST

In mixed martial arts and competitive bodybuilding, there’s an old maxim that says you’re only as good as your last event.

The same can be said about your last workout.

The quicker you can get back into the gym after your last workout, the quicker you can reach your goals. If you can only workout twice a week because you need three days to recover, whats going to happen when you’re matched up with an opponent who can workout three days a week because they only need two?

Time elapsed in and of itself should not be the deciding factor in proper recovery. Anyone can take three days off between workouts just like any idiot can walk into a gym. It’s not the fact that you’re in the gym, it’s what you do with it.

The same principle applies to workout recovery: It’s not the fact that you’ve taken time off, it’s what you’ve done with it.

For the purposes of this discussion, complete recovery can be broken down into three basic categories:

  • Stretching
  • Rest
  • Nutrition

Stretching not only enhances your recovery, it also helps in the prevention of stiff and sore muscles. It can help circulate your blood better and rush nutrients to the muscles. If for no other reason, you should be stretching after your workout to give those protein shakes a free and clear path to your nutrient-starved muscles while simultaneously flushing out the existing waste products.

Rest is one of those general terms that often gets abused. Rest is basically the time spent doing activities that require little to no energy. Of those activities, sleep is the most important. Not only does Human Growth Hormone (HGH) rise during deep sleep, studies have recently linked sleep deprivation to a drop in the hormone Leptin. A drop in Leptin is likely to cause your body to crave carbohydrates. Yikes!

The third stage of complete recovery is nutrition. Most of us consider proper nutrition to be a good, healthy diet with not a lot of sugar and saturated fats. Unfortunately for the competitive athlete, that’s not enough!

Following an intense workout, the body goes through a process known as catabolism, the breaking down of muscle tissue to supply glutamine and other amino acid compounds to other parts of the body.

As a defense mechanism, your body is designed to cannibalize itself starting with muscle tissue to get the nutrients it needs, effectively reversing everything you've worked for in your time at the gym. As far as muscle growth is concerned, you can't rob Peter to pay Paul.

Now you can either provide your body with the nutrients it needs (like Branch Chain Amino Acids) or just sit back and let it feast on the muscle tissue you've worked so hard to grow.

Our goal as athletes in the recovery phase of our training is anabolism, the process where our muscles repair themselves, effectively adding strength and size in response to the stress of training. The most effective way to accomplish that process is by consuming post-workout recovery supplements within one hour after training.

In addition, a comprehensive supplement plan will allow you to spread your protein consumption throughout the day so you don’t have to walk around the office with a grilled chicken breast stuffed in your pocket.

Nutritional supplements have never been more affordable, and once again the good folks over at Feel It! Nutrition are breaking the hearts of competitors nationwide in an effort to bring you the supplements you need for yourself or that athletic loved one just in time for the holidays.
