Stephan Bonnar not looking to get hammered on July 11

Quoteworthy:

“I just need a win, and a win over a big name. We’ll take it from there. I’m not going to be like demanding a title fight or anything. Just climb up that ladder, that’s all I see it as. I know I always have that feeling, something to prove, but I especially have it now. There’s a lot I want to show . . . I want to fight, just leave everything in there and show everyone what I’m made of. Just another fight, just me and Coleman in a cage. That’s kind of how I prefer to look at things.”

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) sensation from season one, Stephan Bonnar, talks about proving he still belongs among the ranks of the light heavyweights when he clashes with Mark Coleman at UFC 100 on July 11. "The American Psycho" has lost three of his last five fights; however, he was looking sharp after stringing back-to-back wins before locking horns with super prospect Jon Jones earlier this year. Can he get back on the winning track less than two weeks from now or will Coleman drop "The Hammer" with his trademark takedowns/ground and pound en route to a victory of his own?

BJ Penn: ‘I’m making sure not to overtrain’ for UFC 101

“The training’s going great for UFC 101. I’m making sure not to overtrain. And, you know we started a couple months ago, and I’m training with Marv Marinovich, and we’ll be spending our last 8 weeks in California with a bunch of good training partners, with Marv Marinovich there, Jason Parillo will be there, Rudy Valentino’s gonna fly up, so I feel VERY good about this training camp … After we beat Kenny Florian on August 8th, come back, relax, and then, I don’t know, we’ll see how it all goes you know, I wanna get another title defense quick, right away, right after it so, we’ll see how it goes.”

-UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn talks about returning to the 155-pound division to defend his title against Kenny Florian at UFC 101 from the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Saturday, August 8. “The Prodigy” is under the care of training guru Marv Marinovich and is already looking forward to another title defense after his fight with KenFlo — which believe it or not is just one month away. Is Penn looking past the surging Florian? Or is this simply justified confidence from the champ?

UFC Quick Quote: Thiago Alves like to beat on people

Posted: 07 Jul 2009 12:40 PM PDT

"I like to beat (on people). Many people ask me when I will submit an adversary in UFC because I train with a bunch of Brazilian black belt fighters but my goal is another. I can even use my ground game to get a better position but I always prepare myself to throw hits. This is the reason I work so much. As I said, I will knock GSP out! I respect him and know he is a great champion but I'm ready and waiting for the time that the Octagon gate will be closed. I will put in practice what I have trained over ten months. Wait, I will take the belt."

Number one welterweight contender Thiago Alves tells Brasil Combate that he’s prepared to make it a hat trick and join Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida as a UFC champion from the country of Brazil when he tangles with division kingpin Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100 on July 11. "The Pitbull" has never fought more than 15 minutes inside the Octagon in more than 10 career appearances. Will that change at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, on fight night or is this one destined to end early? Choose your sides…

Nate Diaz vs Melvin Guillard announced for UFC Fight Night 19 on Sept. 16

Posted: 07 Jul 2009 11:38 AM PDT

The Ultimate Fighter 5 winner Nate Diaz (10-4) will get a chance to break out of an 0-2 slump when he tangles with Melvin Guillard (22-7-2) in a lightweight match up at UFC Fight Night 19 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Sept. 16, 2009.

Diaz is coming off a disappointing unanimous decision loss to Joe Stevenson at TUF 9 Finale on June 20. It was his second straight loss inside the Octagon after winning five straight and further diminished his chances at a division title shot, which could have possibly been within reach with a few more impressive wins.

The good news is that the fighter out of Stockton, Calif., is just 23 years old. In the grand scheme of things the loss to "Daddy" seems like a minor speed bump; however, it appears to be tough to swallow nonetheless. He and Stevenson each earned $25,000 bonuses for putting on one of three "Fights of the Night."

“The Young Assassin” has also had his share of troubles inside of the Octagon (and out) but lately has managed to get his life and career back on track.

The talented 26-year-old Louisiana native appeared to have slayed his personal demons, destroying Denis Siver at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" in July 2008 — his return fight after being released by the
UFC for, among other things, his relationship with illegal drugs.

He followed that up with critical win against Brazilian jiu-jitsu wizard Gleison Tibau at the TUF 9 Finale less than a month ago.

A big win over a name like Diaz and Guillard is right back in the thick of things.

UFC Fight Night 19 is expected to feature a lightweight rumble between Roger Huerta and Gray Maynard. It will serve as the lead-in for the upcoming tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), which features Kimbo Slice and a solid collection of 15 other heavyweight fighters competing in a tournament-style format to earn one "six-figure contract."

WEC tickets at Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio, for ‘Cerrone vs. Henderson’ on Sept. 2 on sale soon

Posted: 07 Jul 2009 11:21 AM PDT

Tickets for an upcoming World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) show at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, Ohio, on Sept. 2, are scheduled to go on sale to the general public on Thursday, July 9 at 10 a.m. ET.

WEC Newsletter subscribers can pick up their presale tickets a day early, starting Wednesday, July 8 at 10 a.m. ET. To take advantage of presale tickets, users must register for the WEC newsletter through WEC.tv.

The event, expected to be dubbed WEC 43, is the first-ever WEC event to be held in the Buckeye State. Lightweights Donald Cerrone and Benson Henderson are expected to headline the event, competing for the interim division title that is now up for grabs with Jamie Varner sidelined indefinitely with a hand injury.

A former professional bull rider, "Cowboy" most recently blasted rising prospect James Krause at WEC 41 en route to a dominating first round submission (rear naked choke). The Greg Jackson-trained Cerrone now boasts a 10-1 record with 1 no contest, with his lone loss coming to Varner at WEC 38 via controversial technical split decision, after Cerrone delivered an illegal knee to a grounded opponent midway through the fifth and final round.

A grappler and former two-time NAIA collegiate wrestling All-American, Henderson (9-1) has lived up to his nickname "Smooth" since debuting in the WEC in January. Fighting out of Glendale, AZ, the 25-year-old scored a quick technical knockout of Shane Roller in his last appearance at WEC 40 in April and has finished both his fights in the WEC.

WEC 43 tickets can be purchased through StubHub.com (Note: StubHub often has seats available even if the event is "sold out"). The WEC 43 main card will air live on Versus at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT on fight night.

The event in Youngstown could likely draw fans from both the Cleveland and Pittsburgh markets. A 5,000-seat arena, the Covelli Centre has hosted sold-out boxing events in the past.

Expect more fights to be added to the card in the coming weeks and months ahead. For more on WEC 43 stay dialed in to MMAmania.com and remember to check out the entire WEC archive right here.

Sengoku 9: Matt Jaggers vs Chang Sung Jung reserve bout completes featherweight tournament field

Posted: 07 Jul 2009 11:14 AM PDT

World Victory Road (WVR) recently announced the latest match-up for its next event, Sengoku 9, which is a reserve bout for it's featherweight tournament pitting Matt Jaggers against Chang Sung Jung at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, on Aug. 2.

Jaggers fell victim to Marlon Sandro at Sengoku 7 in the round of 16 stages of the tournament, getting choked unconscious by a standing arm triangle. Since that hiccup he managed to get back on the winning path this May by submitting Peter Dominguez with a rear naked choke in the first round of their scrap at Bellator 4.

His opponent, "The Korean Zombie" Chang Sung Jung, will look to get back in the win column after he recently had his undefeated streak snapped when he dropped a close decision to Japanese mainstay Masanori Kanehara in their tournament quarter final bout at Sengoku 8 in May.

WVR also officially announced the signing of 2004 Olympic Judo silver medalist Hiroshi Izumi, who has been linked with the organization for quite some time but has not put pen to paper until now.

He joins the likes of Gold medal-winning judoka Satoshi Ishii who recently joined the Japanese promotion himself to transition from Judo to mixed martial arts. Izumi is currently preparing for his debut at light heavyweight, with no official timeline as to when that will happen.

The pairings for World Victory Road's featherweight grand prix semifinals are of course also set to go down at Sengoku 9.

The often overlooked Michihiro Omigawa — who earned his spot in the semifinals by dominating and garnering a hard fought decision victory over L.C Davis and then firing off an impressive performance against Nam Phan — will have another tough test when he faces the always dangerous Marlon Sandro.

Sandro — the Featherweight King of Pancrase — has been impressive in his own right throughout the tournament, submitting Matt Jaggers at Sengoku 7 with a standing arm triangle. He then went on to defeat Nick Denis at his own game by knocking "The Ninja of Love" out with a well placed uppercut just 19 seconds into the first round at Sengoku 8.

Tournament favorite and promotion poster boy Hatsu Hioki will collide with Masanori Kanehara. Hioki has been a dominant force thus far in the tournament, submitting American Top Team (ATT) jiu-jitsu coach Chris Manuel by triangle armbar at Sengoku 7. He then went on to submit formidable grappler Ronnie Mann with a triangle lock earlier last month. Kanehara has garnered decision victories over Jong Man Kim also Chang Sung to earn his spot.

The winners from both semifinal matches will meet in the featherweight tournament finals, which will be held later in the same evening.

Here is the current line-up for Sengoku 9:

Sengoku lightweight title bout:
Satoru Kitaoka (24-8-9) vs. Mizuto Hirota (11-3-1)

Sengoku featherweight grand prix semifinals:
Hatsu Hioki (19-3-2) vs. Masanori Kanehara (13-5-5)
Marlon Sandro (14-0) vs. Michihiro Omigawa (6-7-1)

Sengoku featherweight grand prix final:
Hatsu Hioki (19-3-2) or Masanori Kanehara (13-5-5) vs. Marlon Sandro (14-0) or Michihiro Omigawa (6-7-1)

Sengoku featherweight reserve bout:
Matt Jaggers (11-5) vs. Chang Sung Jung (6-1)

Sengoku Gold Cup Lightweight (154lbs) Final:
Ikuo Usuda (4-0) vs. Koji Ando (2-0-2)

Sengoku Gold Cup Featherweight (143lbs) Final

Sengoku Gold Cup Bantamweight (132 lbs) Final
Takeshi Numajiri (1-1) vs. Ryosuke Komori (3-1)

Non-tournament bouts:
Kazuo Misaki (21-9-2) vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura (13-9)
Blagoi Ivanov (0-0) vs. Kazuyuki Fujita (15-7)
Yoshihiro Nakao (7-2) vs. Choi Mu Bae (9-3)
Eiji Mitsuoka (15-6-2) vs. Clay French (16-5)
Akihiro Gono (29-14-7) vs. Dan Hornbuckle (17-2)
