UFC welterweight Anthony Johnson arrested for domestic violence on June 27

Posted: 09 Jul 2009 05:29 PM PDT

MMAmania.com has been able to confirm with the Hayward Police Department that UFC welterweight fighter Anthony Johnson was arrested on June 27 in Hayward, California on misdemeanor charges including domestic battery involving his ex-girlfriend.

“Rumble” was also charged with criminal threats and the destruction of a cell phone to prevent the reporting of a crime. He was arrested shortly after contacting police about the incident.

Johnson posted bail and was released later that day. He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on July 17. The Johnson camp was not available for comment but is expected to issue a statement shortly.

The surging UFC welterweight is currently on the sidelines nursing a knee injury that forced him to withdraw from his 170-pound showdown against Matt Brown at the June 20 Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 Finale.

Johnson most recently avenged his controversial loss to Kevin Burns at UFC Fight Night 14 last December, knocking the Iowan senseless with a brutal head kick in the opening seconds of round three. He followed that up with a first round destruction of Luigi Fioravanti at UFC Fight Night 17 back in February.

The 24-year-old Atlanta, Ga., native has a ton of buzz because of his size, power and fight-finishing ability. He appears to get better each time out, training with Strikeforce champions Cung Le and Josh Thomson.

His road to the upper echelon of 170-pound fighters, however, will now be put on indefinite pause until he can resolve this latest setback.

UFC 100 PPV buys: Dana White will flip out if it does 1.5 million

“If we do 1.5 million pay-per-view buys, I will do a backflip off the Mandalay Bay, and I’ll live. Believe me (laughs). … For us to do a million pay-per-view buys or anywhere near it, it’s amazing.”

UFC President talks about the high expectations for UFC 100 on pay-per-view after the final pre-fight press conference earlier today. If the promotion’s centennial event even sniffs the 1.5 million mark it will clearly outperform the record-setting UFC 92: "The Ultimate 2008," which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Dec. 27. Earlier this year White revealed that UFC 92 “crushed” UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" with an estimated 1.2 million buys. UFC 66 currently holds second place with an estimated 1,050,000 PPV buys. Of course, it's always hard to nail down an exact figure because the information is never made public; however, with all the mainstream media coverage and the historic nature of the show, White may want to invest some of his insane UFC 100 profits into a super duty safety net. Are you buying it?

Brock Lesnar: Respect is for losers

Quoteworthy:

“I didn't have any respect for Randy [Couture], I didn't have any respect for Heath [Herring], I don't have any respect for Frank. There's going to be a winner, there's going to be a loser. As soon as you step in and have any respect for your opponent, I think you become the loser a hell of a lot sooner.”

UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar dismisses the existence of respect for the opponents within his division despite already holding a submission loss to Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir. Lesnar and “Murr” will clash in a title unification bout at UFC 100 that will also determine just how far the former NCAA and WWE wrestler has come in his still-young MMA career. If he manages to best Mir on July 11, there is a list of up-and-coming 265-pounders who are also waiting for their shot. One thing we can count on is them not getting any respect from the pasty-face goliath.

Grapplers Quest: Daniel Valverde vs Vinny Magalhaes set for UFC Fan Expo

Posted: 09 Jul 2009 10:54 AM PDT

Grapplers Quest recently announced that it has added the final "super fight" to the UFC's first-ever grappling tournament, a contest between Vinicius Magalhaes and Daniel Valverde. The tournament is slated to be a part of the UFC Fan Expo from July 10 to 11 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Magalhaes — The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 light heavyweight finalist — is a former Mundials and Pan-American grappling champion, boasting one of the slickest ground games in the world.

His opponent, Valverde, is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu coach at Team Nogueira which should add some intrigue into the bout and a compelling storyline to boot.

That's because in the time Magalhaes spent on The Ultimate Fighter, he managed to infuriate Coach Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira by talking down his jiu-jitsu and saying it wasn't of a high standard which led to a verbal altercation between the two.

So lots of bragging rights on the line here when Valverde squares off with Magalhaes.

Grapplers Quest at UFC Fan Expo will feature talents such as Shooto legend and Japanese mainstay, Rumina "Moon Wolf" Sato, Ulysses "Useless" Gomez, Fredson Paixao and Joe Stevenson, among other notables.

Sato is known for his unorthodox submissions in mixed martial arts with victories coming by way of flying armbar, calf slicer and flying reverse triangle lock. His opponent, Gomez, is a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and a highly accomplished grappler, winning many accolades during his time in competition.

In other action, Paixao — a current WEC featherweight standout — is slated to do battle with 22-time Grapplers Quest winner Jeff Glover. And the UFC's Joe "Daddy" Stevenson is set to take on young jiu-jitsu ace Bill "The Grill" Cooper, which should present an interesting match-up.

Stevenson recently out-grappled Nate Diaz in a mixed martial arts contest at TUF 9 Finale last month to earn a decision win from the judges. Cooper should present another tough test for Stevenson on the ground — especially in a pure grappling contest.

UFC Fan Expo is a two-day fan exposition of mixed martial arts activities that starts on Friday, July 10.

In addition to the meet and greets with legendary UFC and WEC fighters, MMA demonstrations, fan-inspired special events, training and development sessions, and other exciting opportunities and entertainment, UFC officials plan to enshrine two more of its greatest stars in the Hall of Fame, coinciding with the colossal pay-per-view (PPV) event scheduled for Saturday, July 11.

UFC 104: Antoni Hardonk vs Patrick Barry in the works for October 24

Posted: 09 Jul 2009 09:36 AM PDT

Former K-1 kickboxer and current LA crime fighter Antoni Hardonk (8-5) has reportedly agreed to tangle with hard-hitting Patrick Barry (4-1) at UFC 104, which is scheduled for the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 24 according to MMAWeekly.

Hardonk is coming off the first stoppage of his career courtesy of a Cheick Kongo blitzkrieg at UFC 97 last April. Prior to that, the talented striker was the winner of three straight, taking our Mike Wessel via second round technical knockout at UFC 92 and scoring impressive back-to-back victories over Eddie Sanchez and Colin Robinson.

The Kongo loss brings Hardonk’s record to 4-3 inside the Octagon since his debut at UFC 65 in November 2006.

Barry made his UFC debut last December at UFC 92 "Ultimate 2008″ where he peppered Dan Evensen into a TKO stoppage with brutal low kicks. The New Orleans native was undefeated in four chances with all four contests ending via first round (T)KO.

That streak was interrupted with a submission loss to massive King of the Cage heavyweight champion Tim Hague at UFC 98 back on May 23. “Get Hype” is a decorated San Shou champion with experience in K-1 and the World Combat League.

UFC 104 currently features a light heavyweight title fight between newly-minted champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida in his first title defense against 2005 Pride FC Middleweight Grand Prix winner Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. In addition, top heavyweight prospects Cain Velaquez and Shane Carwin are expected to hook up their ham hocks in a potential number one contender eliminator match in the co main event.
