WEC 45: Mike Brown in talks to defend featherweight crown against Jose Aldo on November 11 Posted: 14 Jul 2009 07:39 PM PDT WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Thomas Brown (22-4) and division number one contender Jose Aldo (15-1) will throw down at WEC 45 at a location to be named later on November 11, according to the Brazilian at InTheGuard.tv. Brown burst onto the scene at WEC 36 as the number one contender to face Urijah Faber in what was at the time the ex-world champion's sixth title defense. The American Top Team powerhouse shocked many by stopping the seemingly unbeatable Faber in the first round with a brutal barrage of strikes. The newly crowned champion then cemented his status as one of the best at 145-pounds four months later by successfully defending that title with a first round submission win over Greg Jackson product Leonard Garcia at WEC 39. "The California Kid" attempted to reclaim his title at WEC 41 back in June, but Brown rebuked him with five rounds of punishment — on the same card that saw Aldo win in just eight seconds. The promotion's 145-pound division has recently skyrocketed with talent. And the line of contenders is growing longer as each event passes. Still, it's hard to imagine anyone more deserving than Aldo. The Brazilian smashing machine is now undefeated (5-0) in the WEC with five straight (technical) knockout victories. He recently scored a crushing win over Cub Swanson at WEC 41, ending the fight before it even got started with a slick skin-splitting flying knee. This bout — which could be the champ’s toughest test to date — has fireworks written all over it. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on this developing fight card. |

UFC 103: Tomasz Drwal vs Drew McFedries on tap for Sept. 19 Posted: 14 Jul 2009 03:00 PM PDT Hard hitting middleweight maulers Tomasz Drwal (16-2) and Drew McFedries (8-5) will attempt to get one step closer to contendership status with a 185-pound brawl at UFC 103, scheduled for the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19, according to MMAWeekly. Drwal has been plagued with injuries since his Octagon debut in September 2006 — a second round technical knockout loss to Thiago Silva at UFC 75: "Champion vs. Champion" in an all-out war. Prior to that loss — just the second of his 17-fight career – Drwal had reeled off 13 straight victories. “The Gorilla” got back in the win column by making quick work of Ivan Serati earlier this year, smashing him silly and putting him to sleep in little more than two minutes of work. Drwal gave Mike Ciesnolevicz more of the same at last month’s TUF Finale, clowning him in the first round with a series of knees and punches. Like Drwal, McFedries knows a thing or two about turning out the lights. “Massacre” has had a rollercoaster career inside the Octagon, winning every other fight and being unable to string together consecutive wins in six attempts with the promotion. That is until he locked horns with Thales Leites on short notice at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" back in October 2008. McFedries dropped his second consecutive bout courtesy of a first round submission (rear naked choke). He lost to Mike Massenzio via submission (kimura) at UFC Fight Night 15 in Omaha, Neb., on September 17, before the loss to the Brazilian. It seemed like the talented-but-unlucky striker was headed for the scrap heap — until he pulled the plug on Xavier Foupa-Pokam at UFC 98 back in May. “Professor X” wilted under McFedries relentless attack, who sent a message to the rest of the division that he’s not going away so easily. UFC 103 is expected to feature Josh Koscheck vs. Frank Trigg, as well as a heavyweight tilt between former PRIDE superstar Mirko Cro Cop and surging heavyweight prosepct Junior Dos Santos. In addition, Martin Kampmann and Mike Swick will collide to determine the number one contender for Georges St. Pierre's 170-pound title. For the latest UFC 103 fight card click here. |
Anthony Johnson vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida takes shape for UFC 104 on Oct. 24 Posted: 14 Jul 2009 01:30 PM PDT A welterweight bout between rising talent Anthony Johnson (7-2) and Japanese import Yoshiyuki Yoshida (11-3) is expected to take place at UFC 104 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 24. News about the possible match up cropped up at the UFC Fan Expo during the build-up to the historic UFC 100 over the weekend, and we have since been able to confirm it. Both fighters have bounced back from losses inside the Octagon in impressive fashion and are looking to make dents in the stacked 170-pound division. Since bursting onto the scene with a 13-second knockout of Chad Reiner, Johnson has pieced together a 4-2 record in the UFC, including revenging a loss to Kevin Burns at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 8 Finale by way of a devastating head kick, and then following up that win by earning a technical knockout (punches) victory over former Marine Luigi Fioravanti at UFC Fight Night 17 in February. "Rumble" had been scheduled to face Matt Brown at the TUF 9 Finale in June, but was forced to withdrawal due to a knee injury. That month also saw him arrested and charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor, including making criminal threats in what has been called a domestic abuse case; however, Johnson denies all charges, according to his management team. Opposing him will be Yoshida, the 2007 Cage Force welterweight tournament champion (over finalist Dan Hardy via disqualification due to an illegal kick to the groin). After submitting "War Machine" (aka, Jon Koppenhaver) via anaconda choke in his UFC debut at UFC 84, "Zenko" went on to headline the UFC: "Fight for the Troops" event in support of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Unfortunately for Yoshida, things did not go his way. Josh Koscheck was able to secure a brutal knockout victory that saw "Kos" set "Zenko" up with one punch and chop him down with another. It was the first time Yoshida has been finished in his career. Yoshida was able to bounce back from the loss with a first-round finish of his own at UFC 98, submitting Brandon Wolff via guillotine choke. He is now 10-1 in his past 11 fights with all 10 wins coming via stoppage (eight of which ended in the first round). UFC 104 will feature a main event between UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida and contender Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. It is not known yet if the Johnson vs. Yoshida bout will be featured on the main card. For all the latest news on UFC 104 check out our complete archive right here. |

Brock Lesnar vs Fedor Emelianenko in the UFC Posted: 14 Jul 2009 12:07 PM PDT Not so fast, Dana White … Josh Barnett has other plans:
Even if there is a major miracle that somehow brings Fedor Emelianenko into the UFC fray, his opponent at Affliction: “Trilogy,” Josh Barnett, reminds everyone about the possibility that he could lose when the pair collides at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Aug. 1. Sure, it hasn’t happened in nearly a decade, but the “Babyface Assassin” is no pushover. Thoughts? |
Kimbo Slice: ‘I don’t mind being a gatekeeper’ for UFC heavyweight division Posted: 14 Jul 2009 11:30 AM PDT Props: MMAWeekly.com Quoteworthy:
Less than confident words from the preseason star of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10, Kimbo Slice. UFC President Dana White shocked the mixed martial arts community not too long ago, announcing that the former bareknuckle Miami street brawler had taken him up on his offer to compete on the tournament-style Spike TV-produced program. His timing may not be the best — TUF 10 features former IFL champion, Roy Nelson, UFC veteran Wes Sims and several former NFL players, among others. So will Slice prove White (who predicted he would never win a TUF show back in Oct. 2008 when he first made the bold offer) and all the other doubters wrong or can he hang with the big boys? Find out on Sept. 16, 2009, at 10 p.m. ET on Spike TV. For now, have at it in the comments section below. |
UFC Fight Night 19: Ed Herman vs. Aaron Simpson in the works for Sept. 16 Posted: 14 Jul 2009 09:18 AM PDT The fight card for UFC Fight Night 19 continues to take shape with the addition of another potential bout — eight-fight Octagon veteran Ed Herman (15-7) has reportedly agreed to fight UFC sophomore Aaron Simpson (5-0) on September 16. Simpson recently revealed the middleweight match up via his personal Facebook page. Herman is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Canadian fighter David Loiseau at UFC 97 in April, which turned out to be a "win or get cut" battle. Prior to that, "Short Fuse" had lost two in a row to Alan Belcher (via split decision) and Demian Maia (via triangle choke). Since making his debut at the TUF Season 3 Finale — a losing performance that still earned him a six-figure contract with the promotion — Herman has racked up a total of four wins and four losses inside the Octagon. A one-fight WEC veteran, Simpson made his transition to the UFC when its sister promotion folded its heavier divisions. His UFC debut came at UFC Fight Night 18, where "A-Train" needed just 1:40 of the opening frame to earn a technical knockout victory over Tim McKenzie. In fact, all five of the two-time All-American wrestler's wins have ended in a (technical) knockout, with only one fight making it out of the first round. Taking place at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., UFC Fight Night 19 will serve as the lead-in event for the debut of the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) on SpikeTV. This season's format will feature 16 heavyweights, including YouTube-sensation-turned-MMA-fighter Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson and four former professional football players.
