We're back again, giving away more free gear as yet another major mixed martial arts event approaches.

MMAmania.com is proud to announce a UFC 109: "Relentless" contest give-a-way currently underway and in effect until Saturday night (Feb. 6) at 10 p.m. ET.

We will once again award several readers who enter the contest with Tokyo Five walkout t-shirts worn by many of today's top mixed martial artists. The grand prize winner gets a signed Matt Serra walkout shirt.

What do you have to do to win?

It's simple: Just provide your fight prediction for Serra's upcoming bout against Frank Trigg in the main event of UFC 109 (ex. Serra defeats Trigg via TKO in round 3 at 2:48; or Trigg defeats Serra via KO in round 1 at 1:58).

So it's winner, round, method and time. One entry per reader ... so make it count! If you pick a decision be sure to include the official time, as well as guess the potential scores for each round (10-9, 10-9, 8-10, etc.)

And to be on the safe side, all entries that pick a decision win must include a tie-breaker pick from the Dan Miller vs. Demian Maia fight. Same criteria as above.

Use our contest email (contest@mmamania.com) to submit your answers. To enter CLICK HERE. Do NOT leave entries/predictions in the comments section below.

Be sure to submit correct contact information so we can contact you when you win -- good luck!

Check out the entire Tokyo Five collection here. More pics after the jump.

UFC 113: Kimbo Slice next fight confirmed vs Matt Mitrione on May 8

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 08:49 PM PST

Slice-mitrione_medium

UFC 113, which is scheduled for the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 8, 2010, will indeed feature the pay-per-view (PPV) debut of Spike TV/CBS ratings monster, Kimbo Slice.

Company president Dana White today confirmed that former backyard brawler will take on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 castmate, Matt Mitrione, in a potentially hard-hitting heavyweight attraction.

Slice is fresh off a bizarre unanimous decision victory over Houston Alexander, during which he essentially chased the "Nebraskan Assassin" around the Octagon for three full rounds. He eventually was able to track him down in the second round, showing some flashes of improvement in his overall mixed martial arts arsenal.

Whether or not he has continued to hone those skills while away from the cage remains to be seen; however, he'll need to ready for the former Purdue University wrestler, who also happens to pack a pretty hard punch, too.

Just ask Marcus Jones.

Mitrione sent his fellow former NFL veteran into early retirement with a second round knockout at TUF 10 Finale late last year.  It marked the first win ever in his professional MMA career. The Purdue University product performed well on the show, advancing to the quarterfinals only to be choked out by James McSweeney.

He more than likely won't have to worry so much about the submission game of Slice -- he comes to throw leather, And hopefully on fight night Mitrione will oblige.

UFC 113 features the much-anticipated rematch between 205-pound division champion, Lyoto Machida, defending his belt against fellow Brazilian Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the main event of the evening.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on the still-developing Montreal fight card.

Reports indicate that recently retired sumo wrestler Asashoryu may turn to Mixed Martial Arts

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 05:31 PM PST

Reports have been circulating among Japanese media outlets during the last few days that Asashoryu, a recently retired sumo wrestler and one of the most successful yokozunas (sumo wrestlers of the highest rank) ever, may try his hand in Mixed Martial Arts for his post-sumo athletic endeavor.

Asashoryu (born Dolgorsürengiin Dagvadorj), a native of Ulan Bator, Mongolia, became the first Mongolian to reach sumo's highest rank in 2003. Over his entire career he won 25 top division tournament championships, placing him third on the all-time list.

While garnering much success as a rikishi (sumo wrestler), Asashoryu has also been subject to media scrutiny on several occasions for controversial behaviors on and off the dohyo (sumo wrestling ring).

As an athelete in a sport bound by rich tradition and strict code of conduct, he has been criticized numerous times by media and Japan Sumo Association for failing to uphold the standards of behavior expected of a holder of the most prestigious rank in the sport.

He was recently mired in another scandal for allegedly punching an acquaintance after getting drunk on a night out. While an ongoing investigation seeks to uncover the details of the incident, Asashoryu announced his retirement on Thursday, February 4, prompting a huge stir in the media.

In the wake of his retirement announcement, DREAM and Sengoku Raiden Championship have expressed interest in Asashoryu, if he indeed considers transitioning to MMA.

Tomiaki Fukuda, head of Japanese Wrestling Foundation and advisor to SRC, has stated that he is willing to welcome Asashoryu to SRC. Regarding the allegation of assault leveled against Asashoryu in the latest scandal, Fukuda has indicated that the yokozuna's past misdeeds will not constitute a huge impediment to his joining SRC.

Keiichi Sasahara of DREAM, a MMA promotion backed by Fighting and Entertainment Group that has signed former sumo wrestler, Akebono to fight in K-1 and Hero's in the past, also commented that Asashoryu would be an "attractive prospect." Nevertheless, given the lack of precedent of sumo wrestlers' making successful transition to MMA, he gave a rightfully critical assessment that "MMA is a sport in which even Olympic judo gold medalists (i.e. Satoshi Ishii) struggle; it is not for the faint of heart."

Though Asashoryu's becoming a MMA fighter is mere speculation at this point, the prospect of his signing with DREAM or SRC inspires hope for ratings gold in this time of MMA drought in Japan; however, it most likely will turn out to be just another tired attempt to garner temporary boost in interest in MMA among general public, rather than a viable revival plan for the ailing sport.

Dana White: 'I never stepped in and had an intervention with Chuck Liddell'

"It’s not true, I never stepped in and had an intervention with Chuck Liddell. Tito says some crazy stuff sometimes. Chuck is a rich guy with a lot of time on his hands. He’s single. He likes to go out and meet girls. He’s no different than anyone else. He’s no different than Tito."

UFC President Dana White confirms the recent statement from WEC General Manager Reed Harris that former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell required an intervention to quell his extravagant social life. Tito Ortiz dropped the apparently inaccurate nugget in an interview to promote the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), which is scheduled to debut on Spike TV on March 31. "Iceman" and "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" -- who have a tumultuous personal history, as well as two fights between them -- have been tapped as coaches. Is it any surprise that we are already being inundated with trash talk material? Did Tito go too far this time around or is it just par for the course?

Paul Taylor drops to lightweight to face John Gunderson at UFC 112

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 02:08 PM PST

Paul_taylor_1010708c_medium

British fighter Paul Taylor (10-5) will make the move from welterweight to lightweight when he takes on John Gunderson (22-7) at UFC 112 from Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi on April 10, according to Hector Castro of the Ground and Pound, in conjunction with Rear Naked Choke Radio.

Taylor is making the move following a unanimous decision loss to John Hathaway at UFC 105. Though an always entertaining fighter -- having been honored with three "Fight of the Night" awards -- Taylor has dropped four of his last six fights at 170 pounds, meaning the the move to lightweight is probably for the best.

Gunderson -- a veteran of 29 professional MMA fights -- is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Rafaello Oliveira in his promotional debut at UFC 108 earlier this year. Prior to that bout, Gunderson had won five of his last six contests, including a three-fight win streak leading up to his contest at Oliveira.

It is tough to tell how this fight will play out as Gunderson obviously has far more experience at lightweight, but hasn't faced the caliber of guys that Taylor has.

UFC 112 is shaping up to be a complete blockbuster event. Two titles will be on the line as Anderson Silva defends his middleweight crown against Vitor Belfort, and lightweight kingpin BJ Penn will put his belt on the line when he takes on a red-hot Frankie Edgar. UFC 112 will also feature an intriguing bout between former champ Matt Hughes and UFC newcomer Renzo Gracie.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for all things UFC 112.

UFC 114: Chris Leben vs Aaron Simpson possibly set for May 29

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 01:00 PM PST

Chris_leben_medium

Hard-hitting Chris Leben (19-6) and undefeated Aaron Simpson (7-0) have agreed to throw leather in a middleweight bout at UFC 114 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 29, according to Hector Castro of the Ground and Pound, in conjunction with Rear Naked Choke Radio.

"The Crippler" is coming off a a unanimous decision victory over Jay Silva at UFC Fight 20 in Fairfax, Virginia. Prior to that bout, Leben had lost consecutive fights to Jake Rosholt at UFC 102 and Michael Bisping at UFC 89. The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 1 alum was forced to take a long leave of absence from the game after he tested positive for steroids following his contest with Bisping.

Arizona Combat Sports product Aaron Simpson has reeled off three wins in a row since coming over to the UFC early last year. His most recent fight ended in controversy after he was awarded a split decision victory over Tom Lawlor at UFC Fight Night 20.

Both fighters are hovering in the middle of the pack in the middleweight division, but with a win at UFC 114, one man will make the proverbial step up in the weight class.

UFC 114 will be centered around the UFC's second fan expo over Memorial Day Weekend, featuring a main event between TUF 10 coaches Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and "Suga" Rashad Evans. UFC 114, which has yet to be officially announced, will likely showcase a battle of light heavyweights between Forrest Griffin and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

Keep it locked to MMAmania.com for more news on UFC 114 as it is made available.

MMA Quick Quote: Herschel Walker contemplates April 2010 return

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 11:34 AM PST

Herschel-walker-2009-12-8-18-40-22_medium

"I’m going get back into the gym and say I’d love to have another fight, and I’m gonna work hard, but I’m leaving it my trainers and coaches’ hands and the fighters at the gym. If they think I’m not ready, they gotta tell me, and I will swallow my pride and not do it. I want to know that I’m still the Herschel of -- that 47-year-old that’s got a 25-year-old way of doing things. If I have lost that, then I don’t think I’ll fight again. My thing is go out and perform at the highest of levels. I’m not there to be a circus act. I want to be a pure fighter."

Former gridiron great and 1-0 mixed martial artist Herschel Walker tells Sherdog.com that he still has the desire to compete for Strikeforce -- pending approval from his coaches and team mates at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA). Walker had a successful debut over Greg Nagy at last month's "Miami" event despite looking like a well-conditioned athlete with just three months of training -- which is exactly what he was. Any Maniacs out there want to see if he can take up Scott Coker's offer and progress into something more than just an "attraction," or should he get out after proving his point?

UFC makes Nate Quarry vs Jorge Rivera and Yushin Okami vs Lucio Linhares official for Fight Night 21

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 10:20 AM PST

Fn21-adds_medium
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently bolstered the already-stacked fight card for its Fight Night 21 event going down on March 31 from the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, March 31.

Completing the main card line up will be former TUF veteran and surgically repaired middleweight Nate Quarry (12-3), who looks to get back into the 185-pound title hunt against longtime Octagon veteran Jorge Rivera (17-7).

"The Rock" outlasted Tim Creduer in a "Crazy" back-and-forth war of attrition at UFC Fight Night 19 last September while "El Conquistador" stopped Rob Kimmons at UFC 104 back in October. Both fighters are riding two-fight winning streaks.

In preliminary card action, one-time middleweight juggernaut Yushin Okami (23-5) is hoping to rebound from a surprising loss to Chael Sonnen at last October's UFC 104 event when he takes on the dangerous Lucio Linhares (13-5).

"Thunder" had won nine out of ten fights heading into "Machida vs. Shogun;" however, he was thoroughly handled by the surging wrestler en route to a unanimous decision loss.

Like Okami, Linhares is trying to right the ship this March after falling to grappling guru Rousimar Palhares via sneaky heel hook at last month's UFC 107 event. "Spartan" is hoping to avoid an 0-2 start under the Zuffa banner.

UFC Fight Night 21 will feature a main event with perennial lightweight contender Kenny "KenFlo" Florian welcoming Japanese superstar "The Fireball Kid" Takanori Gomi to the UFC for the first time in his career.

In addition, Ultimate Fighter 10 Champion Roy "Big Country" Nelson tries to keep his momentum going against the up-and-coming Stefan "Hightower" Struve.

Bellator FC headed to Kansas City with four events in 2010

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 09:39 AM PST

Kclit_9_medium

CHICAGO (February 4, 2010) — Bellator Fighting Championships — a first-of-its-kind mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion airing on FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo — has finalized a groundbreaking agreement to bring four of its high-energy, nationally televised MMA events to the heart of downtown Kansas City in 2010.

Under the terms of the agreement, four Bellator MMA events will be staged at the highly popular Kansas City Power & Light District, which is owned and managed by The Cordish Company, a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate known for its tremendously successful development of mixed-use entertainment districts in high-profile destinations throughout the country including Baltimore, Houston, Louisville, Ky., Atlantic City, N.J., Hollywood, Fla., and Charleston, S.C.

The Bellator/Cordish alliance represents the first time The Cordish Company has partnered with a sports organization to host large-scale nationally televised live sports events at any of their state-of-the-art, open-air, mixed-use entertainment venues. The Kansas City Power & Light District encompasses multiple square blocks in the heart of Kansas City’s downtown area and features an exciting blend of restaurants, nightlife, and leading national retail stores, welcoming in excess of 4 million visitors annually.

Dates for the Kansas City events are as follows:

April 29, 2010 – Bellator XVI
June 24, 2010 – Bellator XXIV
August 26, 2010 – Bellator XXVII
October 14, 2010 – Bellator XXXIV

Bellator and The Cordish Company are also engaged in continued discussions on expanding their alliance to include other Cordish properties throughout the U.S.

"This Cordish Company partnership allows us to create a one-of-a-kind fan experience combining the unparalleled excitement of a live, nationally televised MMA event with the energized, dynamic environment that the Cordish Company’s Kansas City Power & Light District has created," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "If you’ve ever been there, you know that these events are going to be an experience that cannot be missed."

Said Reed Cordish, vice president of The Cordish Company: "The partnership between Bellator and The Cordish Company represents a brand new approach to nationally televised sports viewing. This is a true marriage of sports and entertainment."

Each of the four Bellator events being held at Cordish Company properties (as well as the 20 additional Bellator Season 2 and 3 events) will be distributed live in prime time to 92 million homes by FOX Sports Net and its regional sports network affiliates. In addition, top moments from each week’s live events will then be condensed into an action-packed 30-minute highlight show broadcast every successive Saturday night, late night, on NBC. A one-hour Saturday night highlight show will air nationwide in Spanish on Telemundo.

Bellator Fighting Championships’ nationally televised events feature a combination of tournament and non-tournament bouts. There will be four simultaneous tournaments taking place in each season in the featherweight (145 lbs.), lightweight (155 lbs.), welterweight (170 lbs.) and middleweight (185 lbs.) divisions. Winners of this year’s tournaments will be declared No. 1 contenders to Bellator’s current roster of champions.

Ticketing information for the Kansas City events will be announced over the coming weeks.

Randy Couture: Mark Coleman hasn't changed his style in 13 years

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 08:14 AM PST

Coleman-banana_medium

Quoteworthy:

"Mark’s fighting style hasn’t changed in the thirteen years we’ve been doing this. He has got a great double leg, he is a big physical guy. He is going throw nice heavy, strong punches early on and try to set up that double leg, try to get you on your back. He has got a great wrestler’s base so once he gets on top of you he is hard to get out from underneath. He is going to pick away at you, chip away at you and hope to steal rounds. I am working a lot of inside stuff against the cage, against the fence.  I want to make him work under those conditions. I feel like I have an advantage there with my Greco-roman background compared to his freestyle background. [Cardio] is always a tool in my tool belt, is that I have a tendency to always be in great shape and make it hard work for my opponents. I like to work hard and make them work harder than they like to go."

The UFC 109 main event joins two legends of mixed martial arts this Saturday (Feb. 6) at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Randy Couture (46) faces off Mark Coleman (45) in a light heavyweight match-up in which "The Natural" believes his cardio and Greco-Roman background is going to overwhelm "The Hammer’s" one-dimensional wrestling. Is Couture the more complete fighter? We'll find out this weekend.

UFC 112: Ricky Story vs Nick Osipczak planned for Abu Dhabi on April 10

Posted: 04 Feb 2010 08:09 AM PST

Story-osipzcak_medium
A welterweight match up between Ricky "Horror" Story and Nick Osipczak has been added to the UFC 112 card set to take place on April 10 from Abu Dhabi, the home of Zuffa's newest business partners, according to FiveOuncesofPain.com.

Story (9-3) has looked impressive of late. After dropping his UFC debut to John Hathaway at UFC 99, "Horror" has put together back-to-back wins. After submitting Brian Foster at UFC 103, Story had arguably the best performance of his young career outworking Jesse Lennox at UFC Fight Night 20 to earn a unanimous decision.

Nick Osipczak, though he holds an unblemished record of 5-0, is largely inexperienced. Most fans will remember the brit from his stint on The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs United Kingdom. Osipczak made it to the show's semi-finals where he lost DaMarques Johnson.

In his two official fights under the UFC banner, Osipczak submitted fellow reality show competitor Frank Lester at The Ultimate Finale 9, and pulled an upset when he finished Matt Riddle in the third round of their contest at UFC 105.

UFC 112 was made official for April 10 from Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi by the Zuffa brass last week. The show may just prove to be their best of the year. As it is currently constructed, the card will feature a three-headed monster of main events.

Former champ Matt Hughes will welcome Renzo Gracie to the Octagon, BJ Penn will try to defend his lightweight belt yet again, this time against Frankie Edgar, and Anderson Silva will finally put his title on the line for the first time in almost exactly one year when he takes on the rejuvenated Vitor Belfort.

UFC 111: Rory Markham is going to stand his ground, puff out his chest and throw down against Nate Diaz

"I think it’s a very interesting match-up. I like the kid’s style. I think we can definitely relate to each other – we stand our ground, puff out our chest, and like to throw down in there. He likes to play the heel, and that’s fine with me. No one’s going to take me out of my game. I try to fight without emotion, even though my style is very angry. This is my new beginning. I made an obligation to myself, my organization, and my peers in the welterweight division to get better and refine my game so I can compete with the top guys. I feel my knockout power is absolutely championship caliber; I just need to make sure the rest of my game is as well."

After pulling out of UFC 108 due to injury, welterweight prospect Rory Markham deconstructs his new fight against Nate Diaz at UFC 111 from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, on March 27. Diaz is moving up in weight to see if he has better luck than he did in the lightweight class -- or at least better fighters. Is Markham going to make a name for himself against the TUF 5 champion? Or is Diaz ready to make some waves at 170-pounds?
