UFC 109 bonuses and awards for 'Relentless' PPV fights

Posted: 06 Feb 2010 11:58 PM PST

UFC 109: "Relentless" from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $60,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 22 fighters on the card. And it may not surprise you which combatants are leaving "Sin City" with a little extra green.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded middleweight competitors Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt "Fight of the Night" for their thrilling three rounds of action.

Unfortunately Sonnen spoiled a "Great" opportunity for Marquardt to get back into the number one contender spot with a dominating performance that saw him survive both a deep laceration and last minute submission scare.

Is he destined to meet the winner of Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort later this year?

Representing the 170-pound weight class was AKA nemesis Paulo Thiago. The Brazilian supercop made "Quick" work of Mike Swick's title aspirations with his slick "Submission of the Night" that came via D'arce choke in the second round.

Also bringing home the proverbial bacon was former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra. "The Terror" made his return to the Octagon a memorable one, turning Frank Trigg inside-out to grab "Knockout of the Night" after putting "Twinkle Toes'" on his butt in the first round.

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 109:

Fight of the Night — Chael Sonnen vs. Nate Marquardt
Submission of the Night — Paulo Thiago
Knockout of the Night — Matt Serra

Again, each fighter received $60,000 extra for their performances in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as possible.

UFC 109 results recap from last night for 'Relentless'

Posted: 06 Feb 2010 09:45 PM PST

Ufc109recap_medium

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) tonight (Feb. 6, 2010) pulled the trigger on its annual SuperBowl weekend pay-per-view (PPV) event from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In a "legendary" fight that was apparently a decade in the making, former champions Randy Couture and Mark Coleman collided in the main event of the evening.

It was a battle of UFC Hall of Famer's and pioneers of the sport. Coleman dubbed it as the "fight of his life." It certainly didn't seem that way.

"The Natural" battered the "Hammer" for the entire first round and then did the same to start the second. He eventually softened up Coleman and took him to the ground, sinking in a fight-ending rear naked choke ... just the third submission finish in his illustrious career.

Coleman, who preferred to nap rather than tap, promised to comeback, cursing out Tito "douche bag" Ortiz in his post-fight interview. He admitted to being slow tonight, which may be the understatement of the century.

Couture, meanwhile, will likely find himself in the 205-pound title contender mix if he keeps up this pace, fighting three times in the last seven months. He hasn't necessarily beaten up world beaters since returning to the division, but that could all change sooner rather than later.

On the wrong side of 45, time is not on Couture's side. The UFC will likely look to capitalize on his stunning success before it's too late.

Chael Sonnen was the talk of the town heading into his match up tonight with Nate Marquardt, speaking his mind on everything from Anderson Silva's suspect pink shirts to the trumped up mystique of Andrei Arlovski in his heyday.

Let's just say he backed up all that talk with an utter domination of Marquardt -- widely regarded as a top five middleweight in the world -- with a superior wrestling gameplan and savage ground and pound.

Marquardt simply had no answers, despite cutting Sonnen open bad with an elbow from the bottom in the second frame. He had a few moments in the final minutes of the fight, including a tight guillotine choke, but Sonnen simply beat him up for 13 of the 15 minutes.

It was impressive. And after all the talk, don't be surprised to see Sonnen take on the winner of Silva and Vitor Belfort later this year.

Whether you like it or not.

Mike Swick stepped up on short notice to take on Paulo Thiago, looking to get back to the front on the welterweight contender line sooner rather than later.

Not tonight.

Swick wasn't really able to get anything going all night, but it appeared that he was on the hunt for a knockout. He landed some good shots, but it was one that he didn't land the ultimatley led to his undoing.

Thiago clipped Swick with a counter left that had him on Queer Street. Swick tried to weather the storm, burying his head into Thiago's armpit, but the Brazilian used it to his advantage by sinking in a sneaky choke while Swick was woozy.

Swick took a quick nap shortly thereafter, meanwhile, Thiago improved his stock in the welterweight division with yet another win over a highly-touted American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) product.

That's two straight losses for Swick, who was on the cusp of a division title shot not too long ago. How quickly things can change.

Perhaps no one knows that better than Demian Maia.

Maia and Dan Miller -- both Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelts -- went toe-to-toe in a middleweight match. On paper, it would seem as though both fighters would be focused on submissions, but Maia is just on another level in that department.

It seemed as though Miller knew that full well tonight, refusing to even attempt any kind of takedown or ground work. Unfortunately, his strategy did not work whatsoever this evening.

Maia -- who finally looked like a middleweight, bulked up and much bigger -- outperformed Miller on the feet, landing the more meaningful strikes when the two went toe-to-toe. He also outperformed him on the ground when he was able to take the fight there, working the ground and pound and not giving Miller any chance to display his ground skills.

Maia went on to earn a much-deserved unanimous decision victory, but it was far from epic. Miller was beaten to the punch and just outclassed overall, despite considering himself the more well rounded fighter.

Not tonight.

It's hard to tell where this puts Maia in the middleweight mix, considering it was pretty much just a workmanlike performance. The good news is his stand up looked much improved and he appeared to look like he's serious about staying at 185 pounds based in his new physique.

Perhaps it's only a matter of time before he puts it all together.

Former welterweight champion Matt Serra took on former two-time number one division contender Frank Trigg in a fight that was hyped to the gills by both competitors coming into the match.

There wasn't a ton on the line, but it didn't matter. It was billed as a fun fight and that's exactly what we saw tonight.

Even though it didn't last very long.

Serra, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu wizard, didn't seem to have any intentions of taking it to the ground. And he didn't need to, dropping "Twinkle Toes" with a huge overhand right that sent him to the canvas.

He followed Trigg to the ground as he collapsed like a felled tree and battered him with a few flush punches that had the referee jumping in to stop the fight.

Trigg, who was clearly in big trouble, and more than likely out, initially disputed the stoppage. But it was just -- Serra hurt him bad and Trigg was perhaps one punch away from a trip to the hospital whether he knew it or not.

Great win for "The Terror" and a massive setback for Trigg.

With two straight losses since his return to the promotion, Trigg's future is uncertain. Serra, meanwhile, has nothing to worry about ... not like he seemed concerned one bit regardless of tonight's outcome.

That’s enough from us — now it’s your turn to discuss "Relentless" in the comments section below. Sound off, Maniacs.

Is Couture close to a title show? Does Sonnen deserve the next crack at Anderson Silva? Who does Serra fight next?

Let’s hear what you have to say in the comments section below.

Jesse Taylor defeats Jason Day in battle of UFC vets at Aggression MMA: 'Vengeance'

Posted: 06 Feb 2010 11:54 AM PST

Jt_medium

Lubbock, Texas wasn't the only city that played host to some exciting mixed martial arts action on the eve of UFC 109. Aggression MMA held their second show -- Vengeance --  in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Every single bout on the nine-fight card saw it's conclusion come before the final bell sounded.

Taylor (14-5), best known for his "eventful" stint on the seventh season of TUF, took on Jason Day in the main event. Though "JT Money" would win his first three fights in the reality show competition earning himself a spot in the finals, Taylor was promptly kicked off the show following a wild night out on the town where his behavior proved to be too unruly for him to remain a part of the cast.

While he did get a second chance with the promotion in the summer of 2008, where he lost to fellow TUF 7 competitor C.B. Dollaway, Taylor has yet to grace the Octagon since. He has however, remained very active, and successful, winning eight of his last ten fights.

Taylor's opponent in the main event, Jason "Dooms" Day (18-9), was released from the UFC following back-to-back losses to Michael Bisping at UFC 85 and Kendall Grove at UFC 96. Prior to the fight with Taylor, Day submitted Trevor Stewardson at Rumble in the Cage 35.

With a first round submission (rear naked choke) victory over Day in round one, Taylor's impressive string of fights may just earn him some bigger name fights in Strikeforce or DREAM, where he is currently under contract.

Shark Fights 8 results and quick recap: Josh Neer captures welterweight gold in Lubbock

Posted: 06 Feb 2010 09:31 AM PST

A sold out crowd of 5,000 MMA fans in Lubbock, Texas was treated with an exciting night of action courtesy of Shark Fights 8. Seven of the card's eight bouts ended via submission, KO, or TKO in the first round. The night's main event featured former UFC fighter Josh Neer (27-9-1) battling Anselmo Martinez (7-2) for the promotion's interim welterweight title.

Following his release from the UFC after suffering a unanimous decision loss to Gleison Tibau at UFC 104, "The Dentist" took his game to Max Fights IV back in his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, where he defeated Matt Delanoit via technical knockout in round one on January 8.

Less than a month later, Neer was back in the cage, fighting for yet another promotion, though yielding a very familiar result. Neer quickly ended the fight in round one, submitting Martinez with a rear naked choke.

Since moving to 170, where he is clearly more explosive than he was at lightweight, Josh has gone 2-0. And with this impressive finish, Neer shouldn't have to look far for his next fight. He is likely to compete for Shark Fights later this year in a welterweight title unification bout against current title holder Anthony Waldburger (12-5).

Check out the full list of results from Shark Fights 8 after the jump.

VFC 30 results for 'Night of Champions;' TUF alum Abe Wagner falls in eight seconds

Posted: 06 Feb 2010 08:35 AM PST

Vcf-banner_medium

VFC 30: "Night of Champions" didn’t disappoint mixed martial arts (MMA) fans for the quality of fights, but the outcomes weren’t the best for the hometown favorites.

There were three titles on the line, as well as two bouts to determine the match up for the 170-pound title fight.

In the welterweight showdowns, Jake Hecht (5-1) defeated Anthony Smith (5-5) because of a referee stoppage with 25 seconds left in the third round. And the second fight featured perhaps the future VFC 170-champion and UFC fighter, Leonardo Pecanha (11-5), defeating Ted Worthington (29-19) via triangle choke from the mount.

The shining moment for the local crowd came when 155-pound fighter, Dakota Cochrane, kept his undefeated record intact (2-0) with a win over Jeremy Malaterre (3-2) via unanimous decision.

In other action, Nickolas Mamalis (2-3) faced off against Zach Wolff (12-8) for the newly-formed bantamweight title. Wolff is known for his ability to take punishment and find a way to submit his opponents. And since he took the fight on just one-day notice because the two previous fighters pulled out, it was assumed this would be an easy win.

It didn't happen -- Wolff could never get a submission and Mamalis won via unanimous decision.

In a battle of undefeated lightweights, Chase Hackett (4-0) shut down Jimmy Seipel’s (3-1) stand up and his trash talk by sinking in a rear naked choke 2:31 in the first round to win the division title.

For the heavyweight title, San Diego native Travis Browne (8-0) told the crowd not to blink, and he wasn’t kidding. Eight seconds into the first round, he was the new VFC heavyweight champion, knocking out The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 alum, Abe Wagner (7-3).

To check out a replay of VFC 30: "Night of Champions" check out AmericaOne.com to see if the fights are available in your area.

Here are the amateur under card results:

  • Mirsad Bektic (4-0) defeats Jason Russell (2-2) 1st rd ref stoppage due to strikes
  • Mark Mickells (10-2) defeats Cody Land (8-3) 2nd rd triangle choke
  • Steve Lucchino (10-2-1) defeats Dallas Barrett (11-4) 2nd rd KO
  • Brian Houston (5-0) defeats Jeff Souder (8-1) split decision

Former top 10 featherweight Antonio 'Pato' Carvalho signs with W-1

Posted: 06 Feb 2010 04:48 AM PST

Tony-sato_medium

Canadian featherweight, Antonio "Pato" Carvalho has signed a three-fight deal with the Canadian promotion, Warrior One (W-1) MMA, according to Top MMA News.

Carvalho has been inactive since dropping a unanimous decision against the current Sengoku fighter, Yuji Hoshino, in the preliminary round of the featherweight tournament hosted by Japanese-based Cage Force in June 2008.

Once ranked number one in Shooto in the lightweight (143 pounds) division and considered one of the best Featherweights in the world, he makes a much-anticipated return to competition on March 20th at a Warrior One event in Montreal.

Having risen to prominence in Shooto, Carvalho holds notable wins over "Lion" Takeshi Inoue, Rumina Sato, and Hatsu Hioki. Originally a member of the Shah Franco-Silvio Behring team in Toronto, he also trained at Abe Ani Combat Club in Tokyo with Shooto/Pride veteran, Hiroyuki Abe, female MMA icon, Megumi Fujii, etc.

After experiencing a two-fight skid with losses to Hiroyuki Takaya and the aforementioned Hoshino, the Portuguese-Canadian fighter has moved back to Canada, healed nagging injuries, and focused on reinvigorating his career. He told Top MMA News:

"You know, there was a time between my last fight and now when I questioned if I would ever be in the ring or cage again. This is a new beginning for me, I’m starting over. So it only seems fitting that I’d come back to Canada to fight again. I think W-1 is doing great things for Canadian fighters and our country’s talent can rival anyone else’s in the world. I’m looking forward to entertaining Canadian fight fans soon."

On March 20, Carvalho will join fellow Canadians, Denis Kang, Carlos Newton, Chris Clements, and Nabil Khatib at W-1: "Bad Blood." His opponent in the fight card has yet to be determined.

Stay tuned to MMAmania for more news regarding the upcoming W-1 fight card.
