UFC 86: Forrest Griffin UFC light heavyweight champion

Posted: 06 Jul 2008 12:13 AM CDT

forrest griffin ufc light heavyweight champion
Forrest Griffin is the new light heavyweight champion of the world, which means it’s time for Juanito Ibarra — the trainer for Quinton “Rampage” Jackson — to retire.

Probably won’t happen.

Regardless, MMA’s version of Alfred E. Neuman (as Randy Couture often refers to him) now holds the sport’s most coveted title … and, as usual, he was the most unlikely of champions.

It’s a journey that has come full circle for the man who has been credited for putting mixed martial arts on the map with his win over Stephan Bonnar at the conclusion of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) world debut.

But he endured (as usual) to win a five-round unanimous decision over the much more experienced Jackson. He used a methodical, careful approach that leveraged leg kicks to minimize the punching power of the heavy-hitting Tenessee native.

And it worked.

Griffin survived the onslaught and defied the critics — and the champion — to topple Jackson, taking the fight on all three judges scorecards.

Jackson was gracious in defeat, admitting that he was not the better man (even though the final result did not seem to mirror the final decision… it didn’t appear to this writer to be as clear cut). However, it’s a result that is not only unexpected, but throws the division in upheaval.

Perhaps it’s all for the best — now we can see Jackson take on Wanderlei Silva for a third time before the 2008 fight campaign expires. And more than likely we will see Griffin take on the winner of the fight between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans later on this year.

Good stuff … I guess.

Elite XC seeks Las Vegas promoters license

las vegas elitexc

EliteXC may be headed to Las Vegas.

The company has filed for a promoters license in Nevada, Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletics Commission (NSAC), said in a recent chat with the Las Vegas Sun.

Promoters must get a license to hold sanctioned fights in the state. Kizer said granting the license would likely be discussed at a commission meeting in the nex 45 days.

"I know they really want to do a show in Nevada," Kizer said. "I think they would do well here."

Las Vegas is home to the UFC corporate headquarters.

The UFC routinely sells out venues on the Strip. However, with the exception of two Pride shows in late 2006 and early 2007, rival promotions have not ventured into the city that bills itself as the “Fight Capital of the World.”

In the chat, Kizer also said it's likely that today's UFC 86 will be one of the top five MMA gates in Nevada history. That would mean Zuffa is set to earn at least $3.3 million with tonight's live attendance. The number one MMA gate in the state remains Liddell-Ortiz II at $5.3 million.

It would be tough to break that record in Mandalay Bay. The MGM Grand — site of the top gate — holds more than 2,000 more people than Mandalay.

UFC 86 Caption Contest

Congratulations to MMAmania.com reader “UKmmaBOY” for the winning submission in our most recent caption contest:

Rampage: "You stand as much chance of fucking her as you do beating me."

Forrest: "I know."

He will take home a $150 FREE play from BetUS.com to play around with and eventually evolve in to a degenerate MMA gambler. Congrats.

Here’s our second place winner, which is courtesy of die hard mania, “C-war:”

"Jesse Taylor, is that you? What exactly in da hell did you do that night in Vegas?"

C-war” will receive a $100 FREE play from our friends at BetUS.com.

And our third place award — and a $50 BetUS.com FREE play — goes to “LiFt” for this:

Forrest: “Hey Quinton, looks like everyone’s going green these days.”

Rampage: “Shut up and pretend it helps the planet.”

Of course, our prizes don’t stop there … we’ve got a handful of readers who took home honorable mention, and in the process, will take home MMAmania.com t-shirts:

Forrest smiled inside — Couture’s gameplan had already begun its work.

David Quan

“What are you lookin’ at, Quinton.  She ain’t Asian.”

Dan Finley

“A champion is always distracted by the Call of Booty.”

DoMiNaToRv

Thanks to everyone who participated, including our generous sponsor BetUS.com, and congratulations again to our winners. This was a tough one to caption, which you can blame on Jesse — it was his idea.

Anyway, for the winners please SEND ME ANOTHER EMAIL to remind me to actually get all this stuff settled. If you won a FREE play re-send your BetUS.com account numbers and if you won a t-shirt email me your addresses.

UFC Quick Quote: BJ Penn vs Josh Koscheck at 155 on the horizon?

Posted: 05 Jul 2008 11:05 AM CDT

koscheck

"I just want to be a world champion, whether it be at 155, 170, 185, wherever. I believe I have a lot of fights left in me. With my work ethic and the training partners I have and the coaches I have, I believe some day that dream is going to come true…. You never know [about possibly making the drop to 155]. If people would want to see me fight B.J. Penn at 155 for the title, because there is really nobody there for him to fight, I'd do it…. I know B.J. very well, but business is business. We're friends, but at the end of the day, it's about making money together. If the fans would want to see it, I'd suck it up and I'd live that life to where I'd do whatever I have to do to make 155…. What are you in this business for, to make money and to win a title. Usually, they go hand in hand. A fight with B.J. would be like a dream for me."

– Top welterweight contender Josh Koscheck tells Yahoo!Sports.com that he would consider a move down to the lightweight division if it meant he could challenge BJ Penn for his 155-pound title. “Kos” has a tough 170-pound fight tonight against Chris Lytle tonight at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin,” which he will have to take care of first before entertaining the possibility. In addtion, Penn has hinted that after he takes on the winner of Roger Huerta against Kenny Florian that he plans to move up to 170 to take on Georges St. Pierre or Jon Fitch. Put simply, a lot of things need to not happen — or not happen — for this fight to become a reality. But it would be interesting to say the least.

Arlovski, who has an MMA bout July 19, likely will make his professional boxing debut Sept. 13 (HBO PPV) in the opening fight on the Casamayor-Marquez card in Las Vegas, according to Golden Boy.”

Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski will apparently make his professional boxing debut on an HBO pay-per-view (PPV) telecast on September 15 against a yet to be named opponent. “The Pitbull” recently signed a contract with Affliction MMA and will fight Ben Rothwell at its “Banned” event on July 19.

Roan Carneiro vs. Ryo Chonan UFC 88 fight in the works

Posted: 05 Jul 2008 09:37 AM CDT

roan carneiro ryo chonan
Welterweights Roan Carneiro (12-7) and Ryo Chonan (14-8) are penciled in to scrap at UFC 88: “Breakthrough” at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Ga., on September 6, according to Tatame.com.

The two were supposed to hook ‘em up earlier this year at UFC 85: “Bedlam;” however, Chonan sustained an undisclosed injury and was forced to withdraw from the bout.

Kevin Burns — a banker from Iowa — agreed to replace Chonan on short notice. And in his Octagon debut he submitted Carneiro — a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt — with a triangle choke in round two of their bout. It was a major upset and a huge set back for “Jucao.”

He’ll look to add Chonan to his UFC win list, which includes Tony DeSouza and Rich Clementi.

Chonan dropped his Octagon debut to Karo Parisyan via unanimous decision at UFC 78: "Validation" back in November 2007. He has a ton of experience competing overseas and has gone up against some of the very best in the sport.

Both Chonan and Carneiro are veterans of the Japan-based DEEP promotion and even went at it once before in a middleweight affair — Chonan came out victorious in the first round because of a technical knockout (cut).

UFC 88 currently features the main event between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans, as well as several fights the include big names. To check out the most recent UFC 88 rumors and match ups click here.
