Jason Day regroups and refocuses for UFC return Posted: 09 Jul 2008 08:22 AM CDT
“Dooms” scored one of the early upsets of the 2008 fight season when he stopped the super tough Alan Belcher in the first round of his Octagon debut during their 185-pound scrap at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ back in April. Of course, in the UFC no good deed goes unpunished. So when Chris Leben was jailed for a probation violation just weeks before his fight with “The Count,” the promotion turned to Day on relative short notice and offered him the biggest fight of his career. It didn’t go his way. However, Day is determined now more than ever to prove that he was not a one-hit wonder. “I took a few weeks off after my loss to regroup and relax because I had been training constantly since last September and needed a break,” Day recently told MMAmania.com. “Obviously, the result in London was not the one I was looking for but I am just getting started. And that loss just motivated me to make the changes necessary to take my game to the next level.” Those changes include making a full-time commitment to training. Yes, believe it or not even fighters who compete at the highest level in this sport often need to supplement their incomes. Day is no different — when he is not training or fighting he is building houses full-time up in Canada. In fact, he owns a home building company with his parents; however, the pair have been very supportive by picking up the slack when Day has to take off to train or fight. That slack will more than likely increase as Day dedicates more time to his blossoming fight career. “I am currently making arrangements to stop working and make fighting my full time job,” said Day. “I am very anxious to get back in the cage and avenge my loss, but I want to take the time to have a solid training camp and be the best fighter I can be next time I step in the Octagon.” That journey to become the best fighter he can be has already begun. Day just returned from an intense week of training in Las Vegas, Nevada, with several high-level Brazilian jiu-jitsu players who all share the same management agency. It was a fantasy camp designed to help fill-in the gaps and help him prepare for the super talented opponents that lurk on the horizon. “I had the oppurtunity to train with Frank Mir, Tim Boetsch, Miguel Torres — who is the current WEC 135-pound champ — and James Horn who I think will be making waves in the near future in this sport,” said Day. “Our sessions were lead by Robert Drysdale who is an absolute wizard on the ground. It was a great eye opener and Robert helped correct alot of little details in my ground game.” It was an eye-opening experience and one that will certainly not be the last now that he has made the decision to make more time to refine his game. With more time to train and more time to improve his skills, Day hopes that the focus and hard work will translate to more wins within the eight-sided cage. “I am hoping I will be fighting at the end of October or November,” Day said. “It will be more than enough time to get sharp and continue to maximize my potential.” And now with a full-time commitment perhaps Day’s fairy tale will pick up right where he left off, taking dudes out with bunches of punches. |
Master of the Flying Guillotine DVD ‘Deluxe Anniversary Edition’ Posted: 09 Jul 2008 01:30 AM CDT One-armed boxers. Retractable limbs. MMA death-tournaments. And of course a homicidal blind man with a flying guillotine. Really, what more can you ask for when shopping for a classic martial arts movie? I thought I would take a break from the usual UFC/PRIDE stuff and present one of my all-time favorites of the genre: Master of the Flying Guillotine. Now available in a deluxe anniversary edition teeming with bonuses and special features, this tale of murder and vengeance influenced video games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, as well as many of today’s top martial arts movies. Master of the Flying Guillotine stars martial arts legend Jimmy Wang Yu (who also wrote and directed) as the One-Armed Boxer, a warrior who has remained true to the recently overthrown Ming Dynasty. A league of kung fu masters are tracking down rebels with a new, deadly weapon: The flying guillotine. An unbeatable, almost supernatural blind man is the king of these killers. After the One-Armed Boxer defeats two of the blind master’s disciples, the blind master goes to a martial arts tournament to kill every one-armed man he meets until he has slain the One-Armed Boxer. The wild mix of fighting styles at the tournament (using ropes, swords, sticks, Eagle’s Claw, Thai kickboxing, and Hindu magic) provides a spectacular centerpiece. It’s everything you’ve ever wanted in a martial arts movie and the culminating battle in a coffin shop by itself is worth the price of the DVD. Check it out! Master of the Flying Guillotine is available for purchase in our DVD store for $19.99 by clicking here. To check out our massive library of MMA DVD titles, including PRIDE DVD and UFC DVD click here. We also have Elite XC, WEC, Cage Rage, IFL, King of the Cage and other products for sale in our store. Looking for a title but don't see it in our store? Kala ‘Kalohe’ Hose vs Rolando Dominique ICON Sport fight set for August 2 Posted: 08 Jul 2008 09:51 PM CDT Icon Sport Middleweight Champion Kala “Kalohe” Hose (6-2) will be back in action against one-fight Alaskan Fighting Championships (AFC) veteran, Rolando Dominique (1-0) at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 2, according to MMAWeekly.com. The bout, however, will be a non-title affair and be contested at a catchweight of 180 pounds. Hose won the 185-pound gold in March after a thrilling fifth round knockout of Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni. The title was vacant after Robbie Lawler was unable to defend it on two separate occasions because of injuries. The possibilities seemed endless for “Kalohe” after being crowned the champion of the Hawaii-based mixed martial arts promotion. In fact, MMA forums lit up with potential fantasy match-ups for the hard-hitting former heavyweight, but he lost a ton of that credibility when he was defeated by Robert “Bubba” McDaniel (11-4) on June 14 just 41 seconds into the first round of their non-title tilt. ICON Sport immediately offered McDaniel a rematch for the title, but McDaniel declined, saying the belt belonged around the waist of a Hawaiian. Hose is eager to get back into the win column and will have a good chance to do that against an inexperienced Rolondo Dominique. There isn’t much out there on Dominique other than his first round technical knockout win over Ali Isaako (1-1) at AFC 34 in April. Each of the champ’s six victories have been by knockout. And this looks to be a fight set up for him to get his seventh. We’ll see how game Dominique is come August 2. No other fights have been announced for the event at this time. |
Thomas Denny: Nick Diaz isn’t ‘gonna have a fight to fight’ if he doesnt make 160 Posted: 08 Jul 2008 09:03 PM CDT
Thomas “Wildman” Denny discusses Nick Diaz failing to make weight for his June 14 fight in Hawaii against Muhsin Corbbrey in a recent interview. Denny faces Diaz in Stockton, Calif., on the July 26 Elite XC “Saturday Night Fights” card on CBS at the same weight he failed to make (160 pounds). Some argue that Diaz was bulking up for his welterweight title fight with Hayato “Mach” Sakurai under the Japanese promotion — DREAM — and was given somewhat of a pass. But, the fact remains that Diaz did come in nine pounds over for a fight for which he had plenty of notice. And that is inexcusable, regardless of how many people are so willing to just sweep it under the rug. Denny has a valid point. Lets hope Diaz doesn’t run into those same issues for this fight. Fans are already upset about having the “Mach” fight put on hold, and are perhaps even less thrilled about having to wait for the rematch between him and Elite XC division champion, KJ Noons. Missing a fight in his own backyard for failing to make weight again would give critics who feel Diaz lacks professionalism even more ammo. |
Shayna Baszler vs Cristiane Cyborg Elite XC fight booked for July 26 Posted: 08 Jul 2008 02:48 PM CDT
And it appears that the showdown could have championship implications on the line. In fact, Elite XC Live Events President Gary Shaw stated before the May 31 “Saturday Night Fights” event that he planned to introduce a female title into the picture sometime before the end of 2008. The match between Gina Carano and Kaitlin Young more than likely decided one participant for that title bout (Carano), and this one looks to be the fight to determine the other. Baszler — a submission whiz with each of her nine wins coming by tap out — trains out of Sioux Falls, S.D. She has competed in mixed martial arts since 2003 and has tested herself against some of the best in the world, including Tara LaRosa, Julie Kedzie and Kelly Kobald. She comes into this fight on a four match win streak, with three straight first round submissions under the Elite XC banner. Cristiane Cyborg — a Chute Box fighter — has not competed in nearly two years, but was dominant back in 2006 when she was in action with three first round technical knockout wins (albeit against less than stellar competition). Therefore, this fight seems to be a step up for her in terms of experience, but it’s a huge opportunity to get that high profile match against Carano. The showdown between Carano and Baszler is the fight Elite XC wants for its inaugural female championship, but Cyborg is certainly capable of taking the place of “The Queen of Spades.” This could be a fun fight. UFC 86 medical suspensions and injuries from NSAC Posted: 08 Jul 2008 09:58 AM CDT
Or as Joe Rogan so eloquently put it in the fight between Josh Koscheck and Chris Lytle … a goat's vagina. The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently issued its medical suspensions for the pay-per-view (PPV) event that took place on Saturday, July 5, revealing that Forrest Griffin, Chris Lytle, Cole Miller and Justin Buchholz all got cut and will need to take some time off to heal. It was also no surprise that former light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will have to undergo a battery of tests on his left leg before he can return to action. Here's the complete list of injuries and their medical instructions:
Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases. For complete UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" results and coverage click here. |
