Mike Swick undergoes elbow surgery

Posted: 11 Jul 2008 08:43 AM CDT

Former UFC middleweight contender and rising welterweight star, Mike Swick, underwent minor elbow surgery on Thursday to remove several bone chips that had been bothering him for several months.

According to a source close to MMAmania.com, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum is already on the road to recovery and plans to return to competition before the 2008 fight campaign expires.

Swick is coming off his most recent performance in more than a year, outpointing Marcus Davis on all three judges scorecards at UFC 85: “Bedlam” last month. It was the first loss for the “Irish Hand Grenade” in 11 fights, snapping a win streak that dated back to early 2006.

“Quick” took home a lackluster majority decision win over Josh Burkman at UFC Fight Night 12 prior to the win.

While there is no exact timetable for a return, Swick will possibly compete in October or November of this year provided there are not setbacks in training. We’re told he should be back in the gym in a few weeks.

James Irvin: ‘Im going to have a trap set’ for Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 (Video)

James Irvin seems to be saying all the right things heading into his 205-pound tilt with Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19. He’s got my wheels turning:

Stephan Bonnar — who has a submission win over Irvin — also goes over some keys to victory for the “Sandman,” saying the guy can crack (hit hard) and that he has a puncher’s chance to stop Silva at any time. It’s interesting to say the least. That video is right here.

UFC Quick Quote: Michael Bisping out for a ’stand up brawl’ with Chris Leben

Posted: 10 Jul 2008 11:03 PM CDT

michael bisping

"I want to go out and show my skills, my last fight hit the ground too much – he (Jason Day) gave me the opportunity to take him down, and he couldn't handle the ground-and-pound…. Your next fight is always your biggest fight, you're only as good as your last fight, so yeah this is the biggest fight of my life. I'm not gonna go more cautious because it's Chris Leben. I'll do what I normally do, look to stand on the feet and set the pace. It's the same in every fight, you assess the situation, play it by ear, punches get thrown –- and hopefully we'll get the stand-up brawl we all want."

– Michael Bisping tells Setanta Sports that he is looking to bang with Chris Leben at UFC 89 at The National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham, England, on October 18. He shouldn’t have to look too much … “The Crippler” has made quite a name for himself standing and trading win, lose or draw.

Rafael ‘Feijao’ Cavalcante vs Travis Galbraith Elite XC fight confirmed for July 26

Posted: 10 Jul 2008 10:28 PM CDT

rafael feijao
The third and final fight for the Showtime portion of the joint-telecast with CBS for Elite XC: “Unfinished Business” on July 26 was made official today during a conference call.

Brazilian light heavyweight and Team Nogueira member, Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante (6-1), will face his toughest test to date under the Elite XC banner when he locks horns with Travis “The Gladiator” Galbraith (15-5).

Galbraith is a Canadian native and a six fight King of the Cage veteran. He also made an appearance at Pride 32: “The Real Deal” albeit in a second round technical knockout loss to Kazuhiro Nakamura. “The Gladiator” won nine of his first 12 professional fights — the three losses were to Joe Doerkson, Jonathan Goulet and George St. Pierre.

Nothing to be ashamed of there.

The Canadian comes into this fight having won his last two bouts, one of which was redemption for a previous loss to a very tough Nick Hinchilffe (8-1) while fighting for King of the Cage. There’s no doubt he’s faced some decent competition, but “Feijao” will certainly provide one of the most dangerous challenges of his career … at least since his loss to Nakamura.

This is somewhat of a clash of styles. Galbraith likes to finish is fights with submissions (he’s had 10 of those) and “Feijao” likes to knockout people (he has five of those). Either way, both guys like to finish and this one will more than likely not go the distance.

“Feijao” is perhaps most known for his training partners — UFC champions Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Anderson Silva — among others. But recently he’s been proving he doesn’t belong in anyone’s shadow. His past two fights have been brutal first round destructions of John Doyle and Wayne Cole, at “Street Certified” in February and “Return of the King” in June, respectively.

Any fight involving Rafael is one that I’m interested in watching. Let’s hope Galbraith is up to the challenge on July 26 in Stockton, California.

DREAM Warriors: July 21 DREAM 5 card close to completion

Posted: 10 Jul 2008 03:14 PM CDT

DREAM 5
After two high profile bouts landed in the boneyard, DREAM officials have finally put some of its July 21 matches on paper, according to the DREAM official Web site.

DREAM 5 features the conclusion of its lightweight grand prix between semifinalists Eddie Alarez, Tatsuya Kawajirir, Shinya Aoki and Caol Uno.

Lightweights Joachim Hansen and Kultar Gill will also compete for a reserve spot in the finals should one of the aforementioned competitors be unable to continue.

Things got off to a rough start when Nick Diaz was forced to pull out of the first-ever welterweight title fight against Hayato "Mach" Sakurai after contractual obligations left him stateside.

Recently joining the card is former PRIDE heavyweight and K-1 champion Mark Hunt (5-3), who gives this card a much needed shot in the arm after Jerome LeBanner went MIA and the on again-off again antics from Mirko Cro-Cop left this event without a star heavyweight.

Hunt was recently tooled by fellow K-1 goliath Semmy Schilt at the K-1 World Grand Prix back in April. While Hunt hasn’t competed in mixed martial arts since his submission loss to Fedor Emelianenko at Shockwave 2006, his granite chin and superior striking are still credible threats to any heavyweight conteder … even the dreaded TBA (0-0).

Here is the latest fight card for DREAM 5, scheduled for July 21 at the Osaka-jo Hall in Osaka, Japan:

Non-Tournament Bouts
Motoki Miyazawa vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka
Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Katsuyori Shibata
Norifumi Yamamoto vs. Joseph Benavidez
Mark Hunt vs. TBA

Lightweight Tournament Reserve Bout
Joachim Hansen vs. Kultar Gill

Lightweight Tournament Semi-Finals
Eddie Alvarez vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri
Shinya Aoki vs. Caol Uno

Lightweight Tournament Final
Winners of semifinals clash

Stay tuned for the finalized card. In the meantime, let the speculation for Hunt’s opponent officially begin. Kharitonov? Siliga?

Time will tell …

Karo Parisyan: ‘Its going to be disturbing what I’m going to do to Thiago Alves’ in a rematch

Quoteworthy:

“I have so much anger built up inside of me I just feel bad for whoever stands in front of me. But you know, its very important bro. I want this fight, but eventually I'll fight Thiago on paper. In the rematch its going to be disturbing what I'm going to do to Thiago Alves. I promise to you, and I promise to everyone else it will be disturbing what I do to Thiago Alves. But its like I've never been stopped like that in a fight, never been robbed like that in a fight. At this point right now, I just have to think about my future fight. I can't think about the fight with Alves, I can't (think) that I wasn't there mentally, that I was burnt out. All this shit was going on inside my head, but I can't think about any of that stuff. Thiago, he won on paper, he beat me, he beat Matt Hughes, he deserves it. He took the fight very serious and the best man won that day. But at this point I want to make an example of Yoshida and everyone else who's going to stand in front of me until I can get my title shot and get my title. Eventually it will happen I just gotta take the fight game very serious. My worst enemy has always been that I've been too talented to train, and now its catching up with me. I gotta start training or those guys will start catching up with me.”

Karo Parisyan admits that he can no longer rely on talent alone to be considered among the top welterweight mixed martial artists in the world. Accordingly, the Armenian Judo player intends to train with Greg Jackson in Albuquerque, N.M., for his upcoming fight with Yoshiyuki Yoshida at UFC 88: “Breakthrough” on September 6. Eventually he plans to exact revenge on Alves for his technical knockout loss at UFC Fight Night 13 back in April.

Tim Sylvia: No secrets planned for Fedor Emelianenko Affliction fight

Posted: 10 Jul 2008 02:47 PM CDT

tim sylvia
Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia offered a peak at his strategy for his upcoming fight against Fedor Emelianenko during a conference call on Thursday.

“I don¹t think my game plans have ever been much of a secret,” he said. “Stand up and brawl, defend the takedowns at all costs and try to knock him out.”

The former UFC heavyweight champion took questions about the event, Fedor, his back and the long-term future of the sport.

“I think Affliction has signed seven of the top heavyweights in the world,” Sylvia said. “Three of us are former UFC champions. Fedor is on the card and he gets to fight a top 10 fighter.”

But his Russian opponent might spur more debate than any other man in MMA. Some think he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Others think he’s just an overrated PRIDE fighter.

“He’s beaten everybody they’ve thrown in front of him,” Sylvia said. “How could he be overrated?”

And, of course, it wouldn¹t be an interview with the Maine-iac without some talk about how he’s the man the fans love to hate.

“It doesn¹t bother me like people think it does,” he said. “I’m a fighter and I love to fight.”

Donald Trump comments on Affliction ‘Banned’ July 19 MMA show

Posted: 10 Jul 2008 02:42 PM CDT

donald trump affliction banned mma
Self-styled millionaire Donald Trump refused to throw any verbal jabs at the UFC during a 15-minute conference call to hype the upcoming Affliction “Banned” event.

“Dana’s been very respectful of me and I of him,” Trump said on the day White called Affliction promoter Tony Atencio a “T-shirt guy.”

We’re 10 days away from the kind of MMA war that hasn’t been seen in years … if ever.

On July 19 the Trump-backed Affliction Banned card will attempt to take a step toward dethroning the UFC as the biggest organization in the world. It has built a card of top-notch heavyweights — arguably the UFC’s weakest division — headlined with Fedor Emelianenko against Tim Sylvia. It also added some other big names: Josh Barnett, Pedro Rizzo, Ben Rothwell, Andrei Arlovski and Matt Lindland.

But in a slick counter the UFC has thrown together a free Ultimate Fight Night on Spike featuring Anderson Silva.

The Affliction card will cost $39.99 on pay-per-view. However, two fights, including Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Aleksander Emelianenko, will air for free on Fox Sports Net.

The fight, to be held in Anaheim, Calif., is sold out. The UFC card will be in the Palms in Las Vegas.

“I think we may top them because we have the better fighters,” Trump said, although he wouldn’t comment on the UFC’s business decision to directly oppose Affliction until after the events.

It will first time in recent memory two big MMA cards will square off head-to-head.

Affliction has placed a billboard in New York’s Times Square to go along with a flashy Web site and advertising on a few fan Web sites.

It’s unclear if that will be enough for the start-up company to make big money, especially when it’s being opposed by the UFC.

This isn’t the first time the UFC has thrown a wrench into a rival’s plans. The UFC previously aired a Chuck Liddell special during last month’s inaugural EliteXC event on CBS. It also plans to re-air UFC 84 during the next CBS EliteXC telecast on July 26.

Quick notes: Trump said he believes Tito Ortiz would like to fight for Affliction, although there hasn¹t been any official discussions … The business man said he expects New York to sanction MMA in the near future … Trump swore he’s a long-time MMA fan. “I enjoy it,” he said. “I watch it. I like the MMA stuff. It’s the new wave. I don¹t know if it¹s taking over from boxing. But I think it might be.”
