Cung Le Strikeforce champion on ESPN today (July 16)

Posted: 16 Jul 2008 08:29 AM CDT

Strikeforce World Champ Cung Le

Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Cung Le will make an appearance on ESPNEWS this afternoon at around 5:10 p.m. ET., talking mixed martial arts with the the “Worldwide Leader In Sports” on the “The Hot List” program.

The champ will more than likely also promote the movies he’s been involved with recently. He’ll be playing Marshall Law in the big screen version of the popular video game “Tekken,” which is done filming and in the production phase.

Le has also been cast in the film, “Fighting” that stars Terrence Howard and will be out sometime this year. In addition, he has a leading role in a science fiction project co-starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster. And apparently Le earned the last gig with Quaid and Foster on his acting ability alone.

Pretty impressive.

I doubt this means we’ve seen the last of Cung Le in the Strikeforce cage though. In fact, Frank Shamrock spoke during a conference call today with Elite XC about his plans to take his gold back sooner rather than later.

That’s a rematch everybody would love to see.Hopefully the guys over at “The Hot List” get to the bottom of when we’re going to see the feared striker back in action.

Tune in this afternoon to find out.

Who’s Giboo? Iowa fighter/science teacher chronicles first UFC experience (Part II)

james giboo
Editor’s note: James sent this along yesterday (Monday); however, we were unable to post it until now.

It is the Monday before my first fight in the UFC against Brad Blackburn on July 19. And it marked my last hard day of training.

I decided that I need to do one more day of sprints so I got up at 5 a.m. and hammered out the 30 sprints. Then it was inside to get the kids up and ready to go to daycare. I also had to get ready to go and do my last pad and sparring workout with Chubbs.

Of course, we ended up being late … but that is typical as any parent can tell you.

When we got to daycare I spent a little more time saying goodbye than normal because this was the last time I will see my kids for a week. My wife is taking them to their grandparents tonight because we fly to Vegas in the morning.

So I got to the gym around 8:15 a.m. and got in a good hard hour of pads and sparring. My cardio felt great — my recovery time is really fast, which is what you are looking for as a fighter. I figured I would be a little slow after the sprints, but the legs showed no signs of the run.

I next cruised up to my school and checked my email and relaxed for a little bit. And then it was back to the gym to work on some last minute techniques. You never can be too sharp with technique.

Before heading home I stopped back at the school to finish up a couple of things before I start to run all my last minute errands, which every fighter will tell you are a pain in the butt.

My camp has gone really well for this fight. With Kevin [Burns] and me both on the same card it was easy to get training partners in to work with us.

A typical day for me during this camp started off with cardio or strength training or pad work depending on the day. Then it was off to class at 11 a.m. everyday, which lasted for two hours. Classes consist of technique to full MMA sparring depending on the day and how we were feeling.

Like Randy Couture always says, listen to what your body is telling you. Later in the day I would either lift weights or do cardio. Luckily for me, I was already training hard when I got the call from the UFC. Some guys probably weren't in the best of shape or training hard when the call came in.

So hopefully that will give me an advantage come fight time.

Tomorrow it is off to Las Vegas and the real UFC experience begins. I have no idea what I have to do tomorrow once I arrive so tune back in and I will tell you what goes down. You will get to read what it is like to be a first time UFC fighter.

James Giboo (10-2) is a professional mixed martial artist and Iowa science teacher who will make his Octagon debut against Brad Blackburn at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19. He has competed extensively (and successfully) in the Midwest circuit, which has earned him a rare opportunity to now put his skills to the test against the top fighters in the world under the UFC banner. James will frequently detail his journey to the big time right here at MMAmania.com this week, providing our readers and his fans with a behind-the-scenes account of what it's like to fight for the biggest mixed martial arts promotion on the planet for the first time. Anderson Silva: Rich Franklin toughest UFC fight to date

Quoteworthy:

“His game is what he felt the toughest to train for. His striking game was probably the most complex in the UFC.”

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva reveals that Rich Franklin was his toughest test to date inside the Octagon in a recent interview. “The Spider” toppled ace in the span of 12 months in rather convincing fashion both times. Meanwhile, he appeared to have more trouble against Travis Lutter and Dan Henderson before eventually winning those fights … in convincing fashion.

Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson arrested at gunpoint on felony hit and run charges

rampage jackson arrested

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was today arrested in Costa Mesa, Calif., on suspicion of felony evading, hit-and-run and reckless driving, according to DailyPilot.com.

Jackson — who has a massive pick-up truck with his image plastered on various sides — apparently fled the scene of an accident and then continued to weave in and out of traffic and allude police, causing at least one more collision before coming to a stop, according to a separate SI.com report.

Images show that his tire is absolutely shredded.

Here’s and account from DailyPilot.com:

“Jackson, the driver of a lifted, gray pick-up truck left crashed cars, shredded tires and sparks in his wake this afternoon when he led police on a short pursuit from the southbound 55 freeway exit onto Newport Boulevard where he hit at least three cars, police said.

The driver hit two cars at 19th Street and Newport Boulevard, then drove away at about 1:13 p.m., Lt. Paul Dondero said. A Costa Mesa police officer saw the driver southbound approaching 17th Street and tried to pull him over, police said. There, he hit at least one more car before continuing to run, now heading south toward the Balboa Peninsula, Dondero said. Some time after that, the truck blew a tire but continued to drive on its rims, Dondero said.

Jackson eventually gave up, pulled over and was arrested, police said. The whole chase lasted about five minutes, Dondero said.”

Fortunately, no one was injured throughout the incident. He is being held on $25,000 bail.

Jackson recently lost his 205-pound belt to Forrest Griffin via unanimous decision in a thrilling five-round battle at UFC 86: “Jackson vs. Griffin” at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5. The UFC is aware of his arrest; however, has not issued a statement at this time.

Stay tuned for more details on this developing story.

Shane Carwin vs Neil Wain UFC 89 fight confirmed

shane carwin neil wain ufc 89
Up-and-coming heavyweight prospects, Shane Carwin (9-0) and Neil Wain (4-0), will lock horns at UFC 89: “Leben vs. Bisping” at The National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham, England, on October 19, according to UFC.com.

Carwin lived up to the hype in his inaugural appearance for the promotion, finishing Christian Wellisch with a punch just 44 seconds into their encounter at UFC 84: “Ill Will” in May. The enormous Colorado native still has not made it into the second round of any of his professional mixed martial arts fights.

In fact, Carwin has spent less than eight minutes COMBINED in his nine pro performances.

Wain was was set to make his Octagon debut against Antoni Hardonk at UFC 85: “Bedlam” last month; however, the British fighter sustained a broken nose during training and was forced off the card at the last minute. He has not competed since a technical knockout win over Victor Aniolek at an Ultimate Force show earlier this year.

Don’t expect this one to last very long.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Luis Cane UFC 89 fight official

Posted: 15 Jul 2008 11:19 AM CDT

soko
Explosive light heavyweights Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (5-2) and Luis Cane (8-1) are set to go to war at UFC 89: “Leben vs. Bisping” at The National Indoor Arena (NIA) in Birmingham, England, on October 18.

The promotion today made the 205-pound bout official.

Sokoudjou rebounded from a submission loss to Lyoto Machida in his Octagon debut to finish Kazuhiro Nakamura at UFC 84: “Ill Will” back in May. “The African Assassin” poured it on thick in the opening frame and the tough as nails Japanese fighter couldn’t answer the bell for the second round.

Cane is a Brazilian striker who has made quite a name for himself as a villain thanks in large part to his pre- and post-fight rhetoric. He likes to talk trash, which he did before and after his disqualification loss to James Irvin and his technical knockout win over Jason Lambert at UFC 85: “Bedlam” last month.

Expect more of the same this time around. And don’t expect this 205-pound scrap to hit the mat — these two guys love to strike.

UFC 89 will likely air on Spike TV for free via tape delay, featuring a main event between middleweight sluggers Michael Bisping and Chris Leben.
