UFC Quick Quote: Anthony Johnson to appeal loss to Kevin Burns Posted: 24 Jul 2008 08:47 AM CDT
– Anthony Johnson confirms with FightHype.com that he and his manager intend to appeal the technical knockout loss to Kevin Burns at UFC Fight Night 14 with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Video replays of the third round stoppage show that “Rumble” was felled by an unintentional eye poke and not an uppercut. The referee in charge of the action, however, did not have the benefit of watching instant replay and called a halt to the 170-pound bout.

Fedor Emelianenko vs Andrei Arlovski Affliction fight slated for October 11 Posted: 23 Jul 2008 08:11 PM CDT
Indeed, Affliction has its sights set on Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 11 for its next show, according to Yahoo!Sports.com. And anyone who’s anyone knows that “Sin City” is UFC turf — the organization that forbid its fighters to don the clothing company’s apparel at its events. But who really cares about that because the same report confirms that former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski will challenge the last man to hold the Pride FC heavyweight strap, Fedor Emelianenko, likely for the Russian’s newly-won heavyweight WAMMA title in the main event of the evening. It’s a dream match that ost fans have fantasized about for years. And perhaps the only thing that can top that news is what ace the UFC pulls from its sleeve to once again counter this latest bold move. Perhaps it once again includes UFC Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva. This is getting good. Real good.
Robbie Lawler vs Scott Smith video now on ProElite.com Posted: 23 Jul 2008 07:10 PM CDT
It was without a doubt on its way to becoming one of the best fights of the year before it ended because of an inadvertent eye poke, resulting in a disappointing no contest. The outcome forced Elite XC officials to set up an immediate rematch, which will be the main event on CBS this Saturday in Stockton, Calif., during Elite XC: “Unfinished Business” event. In case the excitement of their first fight has worn off for you — and this rematch doesn’t have you drooling with anticipation — ProElite.com has decided to provide a free video of Lawler vs. Smith I. You’ll be able to watch the epic back-and-forth battle as many times as you like from now until fight time on Saturday. UFC 88 fight card gets three official bouts added for Atlanta Posted: 23 Jul 2008 02:10 PM CDT
There’s no real Earth-shattering news to report because we’ve already passed along the match ups to our readers weeks ago. Then again no fight is truly official until it appears on the promotion’s Web site in some way, shape or form. Nonetheless, as previously reported “three of mixed martial arts' biggest stars” will be in action in little more than one month, including Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson and Karo Parisyan. That’s in addition to, of course, the main event of the evening between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans. Just a quick refresher for those who may have missed the earlier reports here at MMAmania.com: Franklin will return to the 205-pound division to take on Matt Hamill, Henderson is in-line to face submission specialist Rousimar Palhares, and Parisyan has a very tough test against Japanese import (and fellow Judo player), Yoshiyuki Yoshida. UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva was thought to perhaps defend his 185-title at the show; however, with a hand injury to likely opponent Yushin Okami it’s possible that he will now compete on an October card against Patrick Cote. Nick Thompson: Two major lifetime milestones to collide in just 48 hours Posted: 23 Jul 2008 01:25 PM CDT
First, his five plus years in the professional mixed martial arts fight game will reach its pinnacle on Saturday night as he faces Jake Shields for the vacant Elite XC welterweight world title at “Unfinished Business” on CBS in front of millions across the nation. Next, “The Goat” will attempt to reach a crescendo as a scholar as well. In fact, just two days after the biggest test of his career inside the cage he’ll tackle the biggest test of his life outside of it — the Minnesota Bar Examination. It’s a much different yet equally intimidating opponent. In fact, it’s almost unimaginable to think that Thompson could — in a 48-hour period — become a world champion in mixed martial arts and a licensed Minnesota state attorney of law. If anyone is capable of pulling of the Triple Lindy-esque feat, however, it is Nick Thompson. If you look back at his professional MMA record he has 46 fights to his credit. That means he has fought on average about once every five or six weeks since his debut. And let’s not forget he’s won 36 of those bouts, including 20 of his last 21. That’s insane work ethic with a ridiculous success rate. Either this guy isn’t human or he’s just physically and mentally superior to everybody else. How in the world does he do it? “Very carefully,” joked Thompson during a recent conference call. “I get up in the morning about 6. I’m at the gym at 6 doing my strength and conditioning. Then I go straight to class. Then it’s back to the gym. I’ve got a little break room there. I study for a couple hours, train again, go home and study some more.” I’m tired just reading that. There are limits to what the human brain and body can do, but apparently Nick Thompson isn’t aware of them. Beware Jake Shields: This guy might not be human … just ask Eddie Alvarez.
Keith Jardine next fight against Brandon Vera at UFC 89 Posted: 23 Jul 2008 01:00 PM CDT
It’s a 205-pound match up that pits two of the hardest-hitting strikers in the division up against one another. Vera was victorious in his light heavyweight debut just this past weekend, defeating Reese Andy via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 14: “Silva vs. Irvin. “The Truth” picked up a cool $200,000 for the win and snapped a two-fight losing skid that included defeats at the hands of Tim Sylvia and Fabricio Werdum, respectively. Jardine, on the other hand, is out to rebound from a crushing knockout loss to Wanderlei Silva at UFC 84: “Ill Will” back in May. With a win he would have solidified his place a top the short list of division contenders because the “Dean of Mean” also has recent wins over Chuck Liddell and Forrest. However, he’ll have to work his way back up the ladder — consistency is critical in such a stacked division. And Jardine has lost three of his last six fights. This is a big fight for Vera and Jardine for different reasons. And we’ll get to see it all play out for free on Spike TV in just a few months. Elite XC Odds for Lawler vs Smith II Posted: 23 Jul 2008 10:30 AM CDT Elite XC odds for the "Unfinished Business" event from the Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif., on July 26 are out. Just a reminder that the sportsbook is always available for those fans who like to make fights nights that much more interesting. It's just cold hard numbers … and some possible big profits:
At first look — and disclaimer here that I am no betting expert — Wilson Reis at -135 looks like a fantastic play. He is an absolute stud. That’s not taking anything away from Bryan Caraway because his record (9-2) indicates that he is a very good fighter. But Reis is huge for 145 pounds and he’s lightning quick with a top notch submission game. In my opinion, he’s nearly a lock to win … and certainly worth a bet at almost even money. In addition, I like Robbie Lawler to win the rematch with Smith I know the first fight was super close, but I’m not sure if Lawler was ever in danger of being finished — I can’t say the same for Scott Smith. At a little over 2 to 1 a bet on Lawler might be worth it … literally. Nick Thompson also has a much better chance against Jake Shields than the +260 the oddsmakers are giving him. I’m not saying he’s going to win, but at that price, he’s worth some consideration because the value is there. If you’re not familiar with the plus and minus odds system here’s basically how it works: The plus sign means that fighter is the underdog and the minus sign is for the favorite. It’s a pretty simple system. It’s easiest to use a base scale of $100. Meaning, if a fighter is listed at +150 you would win $150 dollars on a $100 bet. If a fighter is listed at -150 you would have to bet $150 in order to win $100. Obviously you don’t have to bet in $100 increments. It’s just an easy way to evaluate the lines. Good luck, gambling degenerates maniacs.
Joe Rogan and girlfriend become parents Posted: 23 Jul 2008 09:02 AM CDT
It’s a first for the 40-year-old. And, unsurprisingly, he’s got some deep thoughts on the May arrival. Here’s a snip:
Wonder if he ponders fatherhood and newborns in his new isolation tank. Regardless, congratulations, Joe. |
