The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10: Episode 3 recap and discussion

Posted: 30 Sep 2009 06:58 PM PDT

TUF 10

Episode three of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 10 is now underway with Kimbo being reflective about his relationship with God and butchering the use of the term “Oxymoron.” He also explains the difference between his “enemy” and “inner me.”

Could we be seeing the softer side of Kimbo?

Roy Nelson doesn’t want to be a “hater” and slam Kimbo for being an overnight sensation. The Evans gang has a head-shaking moment over “Big Country,” who has no manager, no training camp and very few friends. They do however recognize his talent and think he’s got the skill set to finish Slice.

Rampage cracks a smile when Keith Jardine hits the gym for the standard TUF cameo. It of course boils over when Rashad and Rampage start arguing over who hurt Jackson’s jaw, when they were supposed to fight, who really killed Kennedy, etc.

Rampage gets a few laughs when he says Rashad beat Chuck Liddell with his breath. Two points for the readers who immediately pick up on the “Thunderdome” reference.

James McSweeney steps in to back Rashad and Rampage complains that he can’t understand him. Not because of his British accent — because he’s trying to talk with Rashad’s nuts in his mouth.

Over at the gym, Rampage continues his stellar work as coach by deconstructing Kimbo’s beard and chicken bone eating habits. He likes that Slice is humble and has assistant coach Tiki Ghosn work on the brawler’s ground game.

Team Jackson understands the challenge of overcoming Nelson’s big belly but decide instead of cramming for a grappling exam they’ll just let his hands fly and hope for the knockout.

Big Country is already having visions of crucifixes and stoppages from unanswered blows to the face. He explains to some of the guys that they don’t even have to be hard shots — if they’re not defended the fight must be stopped.

Apparently he never heard of Dan Miragliotta.

During the commercial break we get an unintentionally funny promo for UFC 104 featuring Lyoto Machida screaming in broken English and sounding like Corky when he wanted more pie.

Team Jackson is going through their workout and suddenly Marcus Jones is missing in action. They find him in the corner afflicted with a case of the limps. It seems all that size he carries around is causing problems for his knee.

The gang starts to make fun of Jones, who also admits to playing Dungeons and Dragons, collecting comics and picking flowers. He labels himself “the most boring brother around.”

Straight up tedium, dawg.

Later in the house, Jones and Slice connect on a spiritual level and Kimbo gets another fighter to vouch for him as a man. Quote of the season thus far courtesy of Kimbo, who sees some of himself in the ex-NFLer: “Marcus Jones big-ass blew up and I’m one of the pieces.

Weigh-ins! Slice and Nelson hit the scales and it’s 230 for Kimbo and 264 for Nelly.

The fight inches closer and Roy is not opposed to keeping it standing — if he’s getting the better of the exchanges. Kimbo on the other hand is just looking forward to getting in the cage and finally fighting. I think it’s safe to say that so is everyone else that’s watching, especially after months of spoilers, leaks and Internet speculation.

Finally. It’s time.

Heavyweight elimination fight #3: Roy Nelson (13-4) vs. Kimbo Slice (3-1)

Round 1: Nelson working the jab. Nice leg kick by Slice. Lots of bobbing and weaving. Off to a slow start. Kimbo finally opens up and pushes him to the cage while landing some strikes. Nelson ties him up against the fence. Nelson looking for the takedown but Kimbo not going easy. Action stalls against the fence. Nelson finally pulls him from the cage and trips him down. Nelson flat on top working for the kimura. Slice has the guard of Houston Alexander but gets a rise from the gang when he flips off the fence — unfortunately Nelson and his belly keep him from turning over. Nelson traps the arms and starts whaling away straight down on Kimbo’s noggin. Referee Herb Dean lets the punishment go in a scene eerily reminiscent of the James Thompson fight Slice had in Elite XC back in May 2008. The only thing in Dean’s favor is the fact that he knew only a few seconds remained in the fight and the world would be watching. Time expires with Kimbo getting pummeled.

Round 2: Kimbo clocks him and Roy flops around for a moment until a they tie up and a knee attempt by Slice leads to a Nelson takedown. They hit the ground and it’s right back to the jits for Big Country. Rampage: “Don’t let him do that!” Thanks coach. Nelson moving from mount to side control with no resistance. Crucifix part two. From there it’s academic. Nelson pounds away until Dean is forced to stop it.

Roy Nelson defeats Kimbo Slice via TKO

Fight was a monumental letdown, as it appears nothing has changed since the last few times we saw Kimbo. We just happen to know him a little better. While he’s undoubtedly a nice guy, he has a long way to go before he can be considered a mixed martial artist.

And Nelson might have grappling cred, but his stand-up was nothing to write home about. Dana slammed his performance following the fight, claiming he hit like a little girl and did way too much celebrating after the win.

Kimbo gets real for the cameras and says he feels like crap for losing but won’t quit because he’s a fighter who is still learning. Time will tell.

Stay tuned next week as Marcus Jones pulls a Phillipe Nover and we’re teased with a potential Kimbo comeback. And oh no! There’s a traitor in the Evans camp! Gasp! Who could it be?

Find out in seven!

kimbo

… on Spike TV at 10 p.m. ET is just a handful of minutes from now.

It’s the moment of truth. We’ve been going back and forth in various threads all week about the possible outcome. Now let’s hear what you have to say in this official “Kimbo Slice vs. Roy Nelson” discussion thread.

Sound off, Maniacs. Predictions, por favor.

UFC Quick Quote: Anderson Silva will destroy Vitor Belfort on Jan. 2

Posted: 30 Sep 2009 01:21 PM PDT

anderson silva best pound for pound fighter in UFC

"I believe Anderson would destroy Belfort. I think it's a very interesting fight. Belfort has good boxing skills and is a good athlete, but everybody knows that he has a weak psychological aspect and I think he will shake when he gets in the Octagon with (Silva). Let's see if (Belfort) will put his new karate … I mean old karate, new for him, in practice against Anderson.”

– Wanderlei Silva provides Sherdog.com with his prediction for the middleweight match up between 185-pound kingpin, Anderson Silva, and former light heavyweight champion, Vitor Belfort, which is scheduled for UFC 108 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2. “The Phenom” finished the “The Axe Murderer” in just 44 seconds more than a decade ago at UFC 17.5: “Ultimate Brazil,” but that isn’t stopping him from picking his former Chute Boxe training partner to score a decisive victory. Agree or disagree, Maniacs?

Rashad Evans: ‘I thought Roy could knock Kimbo out’

Posted: 30 Sep 2009 10:58 AM PDT

Kimbo vs Roy

Props: MMA Fanhouse

Quoteworthy:

“I was thinking about winning, and that’s why I wanted Roy to beat Kimbo — I thought Roy could knock Kimbo out. It’s not just that Roy can trade punches with Kimbo, but Roy has been in big fights before and he was the only guy who I could be sure wouldn’t get sucked into the mystique of Kimbo Slice. Roy’s biggest problem is he’s always trained by himself, and he doesn’t always seem like he knows how to take coaching. Kimbo can be a very, very good fighter under the right tutelage. Whether he gets that training? That’s on him.”

We’re just a few hours away before Team Rampage number-one pick and former YouTube sensation Kimbo Slice finally steps into the cage against ex-IFL champion Roy Nelson. While the video preview for Episode 3 shows “Big Country” taking a big flop courtesy of a Kimbo-bomb, it’s not uncommon for a downed fighter to execute a miraculous submission from his back or survive until the bell. Nelson does have a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — and the benefit of the doubt from many insiders. Will “Sugar” get all salty over Nelson’s defeat? Or will the swollen submission specialist make his coach proud with a Petruzelli of his own? Tick-tock, Tick-tock …

UWC 7: ‘Redemption’ set for Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA on Oct. 3

Posted: 30 Sep 2009 10:32 AM PDT

Washington DC (September 30, 2009) – While much attention is being paid to the two co-Main Events featuring world championship title bouts pitting Mike "The Hulk" Easton vs. Chase Beebe and John "The Magician" Dodson vs. Pat Runez, the rest of the UWC REDEMPTION fight card is loaded with outstanding fighters in what could easily turn out to be its best lineup ever.

Continuing its evolution as a rising force in the MMA world and keeping with its mission to help grow the sport, particularly in the Washington, D.C. area, six of the seven UWC undercard bouts will showcase a local, up-and-coming prospect taking on a top-tier competitor fighting out of a prominent national gym.

After fighting in the evening's first bout and earning first-round stoppages at the last three UWC shows, undefeated middleweight fan favorite Kris "Savage" McCray (3-0) of Woodbridge, VA will fight fourth on the show and step up in competition to face Igor "The Legend" Almeida (5-0-1) of Palm Beach, FL who has not lost as a professional as well.

To prepare for his battle, McCray, a former wrestling standout at Woodbridge Senior HS and member of Gold Medal Grappling, has been training in Greg Jackson's camp with UFC lightweight Joe "Daddy" Stevenson and Tom "Kong" Watson while living at Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone's house. The Army reservist has never tasted defeat — he was 9-0 as an amateur –and will need his all-around skills more than ever when facing his Brazilian-schooled opponent.

Born in Boston, MA and raised in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Almeida is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Eduardo Brigadeiro. He trained in Rio for four years under Sergio Souza and Murillo Bustamante and spent another seven years training in Florida. Almeida has been practicing MMA and Muay Thai since 2003; two of those years were at the Xtreme Couture facility in Florida.

Looking to rebound from a hard-fought loss to War Machine at last April's UWC Man "O" War, popular, two-time UWC veteran Timothy (formerly "Reshad") Woods (4-2) returns to face Ryan "The Rhino" Sturdy (11-3-1) of Chicago in a 185-pound contest. Woods is probably best known to UWC fans for his devastating, knock-out power-bomb delivered to Ron Stallings (now a teammate of his at Team Lloyd Irvin) at UWC Invasion in 2008. The imposing 6'4"Woods has impressive clinching skills, lighting fast strikes, and devastating elbows. All four of his wins have come by knockout.

Sturdy, who fights for World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) star Jeff Curran's Team Curran, has won five consecutive, and 11 of last 12 fights. He holds the Extreme Challenge middleweight belt, the same organization that spawned such noted fighters as Matt Hughes, Jens Pulver, Tim Silvia, Pat Miletich and Rich Franklin, and should pose a worthy opponent.

Harrisonburg, VA's hard-striking lightweight Kyle "The Alley Cat" Baker (7-4) has established himself as a rising force in the Mid-Atlantic region for impressive knockout wins over of former UFC fighters Drew Fickett and Chad Reimer and a bruising defeat of former Elite XC fighter, James "Binky" Jones, in arguably the fight of the night at UWC Confrontation last year. The MMA Institute fighter will collide with Tommy "Gun" Truex (6-2), a member of Greg Jackson's New Mexico-based camp, who boasts a four-fight win streak. Truex serves as an officer in the National Guard and is a University of Mexico business school graduate.

One year older than his brother and more of a submission specialist, Beau "Blackjack" Baker (7-2), will also have his hands full with an outstanding opponent when he challenges undefeated Jacob "Tick-Tock" McClintock (5-0) of Arizona Combat Sports in a middleweight match. Notable opponents for Baker are Tommy Speer, Jorge Patino and TJ Grant.

No opponent has lasted past the first round against McClintock including heavy favorite Sultan Tikhayev whom the Phoenix, AZ-native submitted in his last fight held in St. Petersburg, Russia.

A teammate of the Baker brothers also fighting out of MMA Institute, Jesse "Mountain Man" Riggleman (6-0) puts his undefeated streak on the line against Josh "Taz" Ferguson (7-2), in a flyweight contest. A former two-time Virginia state wrestling champion, Riggleman is a relative newcomer to the sport who only started MMA training in February 2008. A grappling and ground-and-pound specialist, he turned pro after going undefeated in five amateur fights over an eight-month period.

Ferguson, a skilled submission specialist fighting for Team Cruz in Louisville, KY, lost in a title fight to current UWC champion Mike Easton at UWC Capital Punishment. All seven of his professional victories have ended with his opponent locked in either an armbar or a rear naked choke submission.

Rounding out the action-packed card as the first fight of the show will be Freddy Assuncao from Atlanta, GA and Newark, NJ's Felipe "Sertanejo"Arantes (0-1), a pair of Brazilian featherweights now living stateside. Assuncao enters the cage with a strong pedigree as the brother of UFC veteran Junior Assuncao and twin brother of current WEC bantamweight contender Raphael Assuncao.

Extreme Cage Fighting returns to the GMU Patriot Center on Saturday, October 3, 2009 with UWC REDEMPTION featuring two of the greatest MMA World title fights in our Nation's Capital History. UWC Bantamweight Champion Mike "The Hulk" Easton (8-1) of Washington, D.C. defends his title against his toughest opponent yet in former WEC World Champ Chase "The Rage" Beebe (12-4) of Chicago, IL in the main event. In the co-main event John "The Magician" Dodson takes on Pat Runez for the UWC's vacant Flyweight Championship belt. All four UWC title contenders are ranked among the top 25 in the world. Nine total bouts are scheduled.

MMA Quick Quote: Brett Rogers wants Alistair Overeem to defend the Strikeforce belt — or surrender it

Posted: 30 Sep 2009 08:09 AM PDT

“I don’t know what’s been going on with [Overeem], he’s kinda been hesitatin’ on everybody. He’s always complainin’ about something ain’t right, his hand is hurtin’ and things like that. If I was anybody I would try to go in deep on why his hand is hurtin’ and why everything else is hurtin’ because maybe it might not just be hurt,  it could be something else. I don’t know, I ain’t the one to say or start nothin’ but he’s definitely gonna have to give up that belt here real, real soon because I’m in it to win it, I want that belt. If you’re a title holder, I’m sorry man but you should be fighting at least a couple of times a year. No excuses. If you can’t get the job done then give it up. One, I say he’s ducking me. He knows I’m gonna get him. I could care less who he is. Two, I don’t think he can fight in the states right now. I don’t think you can get that big in such a small amount of time. I don’t know, who knows.”

– Strikeforce heavyweight wrecking ball Brett Rogers sounds off on Pro MMA Radio regarding the convoluted title picture in the Strikeforce 265 lb. division. While “The Grim” is frustrated that Alistair Overeem is holding the championship hostage while he dabbles in the Japanese kickboxing scene, he must first overcome “The Last Emperor” on Nov. 7 when he faces Fedor Emelianenko live on CBS. Is Rogers heir to the throne? Or will the WAMMA Heavyweight Champion make his complaints towards “Demolition Man” a moot point? We’ll find out soon enough. For the complete interview click here.
