The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10: Episode 6 recap and discussion

Posted: 21 Oct 2009 08:33 PM PDT

tuf10_banner

Episode six of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 10 is now underway and in true TUF tradition Darryl Schoonover is drinking beer at 8am. At the gym, Coach Evans introduces guest trainer Phil Nurse (sans Vaseline) to his underlings. Nurse helps these guys mix it up in practice and Brendan Schaub throws hands with Schoonover in the ring.

The Evans gang does not like what they see from Shoonover in practice and his house mates rat him out regarding the liquor. Rashad tells him to put the bottle down and focus on training because he has the potential to shock Team Jackson.

Speaking of the coaching phenom, he runs into Schoonover during the gym transition and Rampage starts up with the insults, calling him “Titties” and making fun of him. Schoonover gets mouthy with the former champ and it gets ugly fast.

“Titties” points out that a street fight is a lot different than a cage fight and he admits to contemplating a future headbutt for Rampage.

During the fight selection, Coach Evans selects Schoonover to face Zak Jensen and following the pick, tempers boil over and Jackson and Schoonover have to be separated.

Rashad tries to resolve the dispute and naturally gets dragged right into it. Cooler heads prevail and Team Evans vacates the gym.

Kimbo relates Zak Jensen to Shrek’s younger brother. He also gets compared to Piggy from Lord of the Flies and the cast is convinced he’s going to blow a gasket and murder everyone in the house before the season is over — but proceed to taunt him anyway.

Wes Sims even accuses him of sniffing his underwear.

Not to be outdone, Schoonover gets his serial killer on and shows off his gruesome tattoos of people in peril and Coach Evans gets a weird vibe from him.

Despite the creepiness factor, Rashad is impressed with the power that Schoonover has in his hands and looks forward to the reaction from Team Jackson when he lets his gloves fly.

Assistant Coach Tiki Ghosn decides he’s not getting enough camera time and creates a collage of “Team Cocky,” featuring caricatures of each fighter training on Team Evans.

Zak Jensen is mailing it during training and Kimbo blames it on a lack of self-confidence. Rampage asks Jensen if he wants him to call his Momma so she can come pick him up and rescue him from all this treachery.

No sooner does he try to turn up the intensity than an errant blow cuts him wide open. Off camera, Kimbo Slice lights up like a Christmas tree in anticipation of being a late replacement for the downed fighter.

Unfortunately for the eager beaver, Jensen isn’t about to just give his spot away. He takes his stitches and goes right back to fight prep. Rampage beams like a proud Papa.

The cut seemed to rejuvenate Jensen as he’s electric in practice, landing high kicks and scoring takedowns. A couple of fist bumps later and the coaches finally believe in him.

Rashad gets to the gym early and catches a glimpse of the “Team Cocky” collage and has a good laugh over it. He also thinks that Team Jackson being 0-5 is even funnier.

He disposes of the banner and rallies the troops, telling them to stay focused and keep winning fights while their opponents worry about the next big prank.

Both guys get through the weigh-ins without incident and on the day of the fight, Kimbo Slice lays out by the pool to work on his tan.

I wish I was making that up.

Rampage sneaks into the locker room and writes “Titties” on the sign under Schoonover’s name. Rampage has officially become that guy at the party — the one that keeps telling the same joke over and over until the sound of it causes physical discomfort.

Since editing in a laugh track is too obvious, some sack-toting suck-up lets out a forced giggle every time Rampage says “Titties.” I glance at the clock to see that only eight minutes remain in the show as we cut to commercial.

Someone is obviously going to sleep.

Heavyweight elimination fight #6: Darryl Schoonover (10-0) vs. Zak Jensen (7-2)

Round 1: Schoonover makes a really mean face, eats a combo and ties Jensen up before pushing him to the cage. They clinch and Schoonover unloads, landing right after left until a wobbly Jensen scores a desperation takedown. From guard, Schoonover immediately locks up a triangle. Hammer fists by Jensen land, but do no damage. It takes him what seems like an eternity but Schoonover finally gets it secured and Jensen goes to sleep.

Darryl Schoonover defeats Zak Jensen via submission (triangle choke)

Jensen mopes about after the fights while Schoonover keeps it in perspective, recognizing he still has two more fights to win before he can get to the Finale. Instead of worrying about the next fight, Coach Rampage is worrying about the next prank.

Stay tuned next week as Team Rashad turns on Matt Mitrione, who may have finally gone off the deep end. The final fight selections are made and once again, Rashad and Rampage bicker to no end.

And will we get what’s being billed as “The fight of the season?”

See you in seven!

Tim Sylvia agrees to FieLDS Dynamite!! debut; eyes fight against Hong Man Choi

Posted: 21 Oct 2009 08:32 PM PDT

Maniacs, calibrate your freak show radar!

Manager Monte Cox has given the green light for his client, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia (25-6), to verbally agree to his participation in the FieLDS Dynamite!! event on New Year’s Eve in Japan, according to MMA Fanhouse.

The tentative all-star line-up for the Dynamite!! 2009 MMA/K-1 hybrid fight card includes such notable names as Kid Yamamoto, Kiyoshi Tamura, Kazushi Sakuraba, Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Badr Hari, Jerome Lebanner, Alistair Overeem, and Hong Man Choi.

Make note of the last two names, as they are the likely opponents for Sylvia.

Cox gives his two cents on Sylvia’s Japanese debut on the annual FEG-hosted combat sport extravaganza: He thinks that Hong Man Choi is a more judicious choice of an opponent than Alistair Overeem because the “Maine-iac” is currently on the comeback trail.

Since exiting UFC in the wake of his loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 81, Sylvia lost two consecutive bouts to the heavyweight king, Fedor Emelianenko and boxer-turned-MMA fighter, Ray Mercer in a total of 45 seconds.

He restored himself to the winning column with a first-round TKO victory over Jason Riley at an Adrenaline MMA event last month. Though he broke his right hand in the bout, the injury reportedly has fully healed.

Alongside the potential Sylvia-Choi showdown of the giants, the not-so-Hulk-like Super Hulk Tournament finalists, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Ikuhisa Minowa, will square off the tournament gold.

In the K-1 department, the main event of the night will be the farewell bout for the two-time K-1 MAX champion, Masato against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Masato is scheduled to face either the winner of this year’s K-1 MAX tournament or his arch rival, Andy Souwer: The two are not mutually exclusive, as Souwer is one of the four finalists of the K-1 MAX tournament.

WEC 44: Rob McCullough vs Karen Darabedyan with Anthony Pettis hurt

Posted: 21 Oct 2009 07:59 PM PDT

Veteran lightweight Karen Darabedyan (8-1) will make his promotion debut against former WEC lightweight champion Rob McCullough (17-5) at WEC 44 after an undisclosed injury has forced Anthony Pettis (7-0) off the Nov. 18 fight card, according to MMAweekly.com.

After coughing up the 155-pound title to Jamie Varner at WEC 32, “Razor” Rob is 2-1, most recently squeaking out a split-decision victory over Marcus Hicks at WEC 39, which proved a successful comeback after going the distance in a losing effort against Donald Cerrone.

McCullough was "Cowboy's" first victory that went all three rounds.

Karen Darabedyan's last bout was a victory at Shark Fights 6 back in September. His only loss was two years ago when he came up short on the judges' scorecards to Koji Oishi at PFP: “Ring of Fire” in 2007.

This will mark Darabedyan's WEC debut, and McCullough is quite the welcome into the promotion.

WEC 44 from “The Pearl” at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada, features a featherweight championship bout between heavy-handed Mike Thomas Brown and the dynamic challenger Jose Aldo.

Junie Browning returns for ‘Onslaught’ at MMA Big Show on Nov. 28

Posted: 21 Oct 2009 06:59 PM PDT

Indiana ( USA ): MMA Big Show has signed two-time UFC veteran Junie Browning (3-1) and The Ultimate Fighter alum Luke Zachrich (9-1) to contracts. Browning will debut at November's MMA Big Show event, "ONSLAUGHT," while Zachrich will fight at the January 9th event.

Junie Browning is a member of Xtreme Couture, and was a fighter on The Ultimate Fighter reality show. In his elimination bout, he defeated Jose Aguilar by TKO, as Aguilar was not able to answer the bell for the 2nd round. Browning was then made the first pick of the lightweights for Team Mir.

He was successful in his quarterfinal match-up with Rolando Delgado, winning by decision after 3 rounds, dropping and nearly finishing Delgado in the 2nd round. On December 13, 2008, Browning took on fellow Team Mir cast-mate Dave Kaplan on the main card of The Ultimate Fighter Season 8 Finale, winning by armbar. Browning and Kaplan both won $25,000 for Fight of the Night.

"We are fully aware of Junie's recent arrest and cut from the UFC," stated Big Show Owner/Promoter Jason Appleton. "However, I firmly believe that people deserve second and third chances. I saw Junie fight in Louisville , KY back in the day as an amateur, and he's always put on a hell of a show. He and his brother were always fun to watch. They're both good kids, and it is my hope that Junie will rebound and make the most of his limitless potential."

Browning's first challenge in MMA Big Show will be no pushover, as he will face fearsome fighter Scott Cornwell at November's "ONSLAUGHT." This Cincinnati native started Tae Kwon Do at the age of three under Master David Huffstutler. As a teenager, Cornwell quickly progressed through the ranks, and currently holds a 3rd degree black belt, winning several local and national tournaments.

He also had a very impressive high school wrestling career, where he competed for multiple national teams in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. His amateur mixed martial arts career began in 2007 while training under 4th degree black belt and renowned MMA instructor Rob Gerhardt, and he won his first five amateur fights, amassing an impressive record of 7-2.

In preparation for his pro debut, Scott began additional training with Rod Housley at Team Vision while continuing to train and teach at Hamilton-Fairfield Tae Kwon Do. In short, Scott is an excellent striker and wrestler, and is well-versed in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He is ready or the challenge that Browning will bring to the cage.

Luke Zachrich holds a very impressive record of 9-1, and has never gone to a decision in his professional fighting career. He possesses a very exciting fight style, and will bring his approach and technique to the MMA Big Show cage.

"Luke is a very fine fighter, and brings exactly the kind of "never-say-die" attitude that we love to have in our fighters," explained Appleton . "He is a great addition to our roster, and I look forward to seeing him electrify the Big Show crowds."

A heavyweight elimination bout headlines MMA Big Show's next event offering, "FULL FORCE," live at the Belterra Casino Resort & Spa in Belterra , Indiana on Saturday, October 24th. Also featured will be the first professional women's bout in Big Show history. All told, 15 bouts are scheduled to entertain fight fans, and the "FULL FORCE" action is sure to be hard-hitting. Tickets are priced at $25, $40, and $45, and are available through Ticketmaster, as well as http://www.mmabigshow.com/. 21 and over only, please.

WEC 45: Takeya Mizugaki vs Damacio Page in the works for Dec. 19

Posted: 21 Oct 2009 06:22 PM PDT

Gritty bantamweights Takeya Mizugaki (12-3-2) and Damacio Page (12-4) have reportedly agreed to hook ‘em up at WEC 45 on Dec. 19 in Las Vegas, according to Sherdog.com.

Mizugaki fought for the 135-pound title back in April, losing via unanimous decision to Miguel Torres in a “Fight of the Year” nominee. He rebounded with a victory over Jeff Curran, who left for Strikeforce earlier this week.

The Japanese import is one of the top contenders in the division and is considered by many a top five bantamweight in the world.

Damacio Page is coming off a first round submission victory at WEC 43 over Will Campuzano, marking his second victory in a row. His last loss came at WEC 35 to current divisional champion Brian Bowles.

Like Mizugaki, "The Angel of Death" is considered at the top of the bantamweight food chain.

After Miguel Torres' upset loss to Brian Bowles at WEC 42, the WEC bantamweight division had been turned on it’s head. The winner of this fight could conceivably get a title shot considering the division's current landscape.

WEC 45 is set for Dec. 19, but the card is still in the works. A match up between Donald Cerrone and Ed Ratcliff was recently announced rumored as a possible main event for the WEC's year end show.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for news on this still-developing fight card.

Welterweight title fight headlines Gladiator Challenge: ‘Reality Check’ on Oct. 24

Posted: 21 Oct 2009 06:07 PM PDT

Apple Valley, Calif. — Gladiator Challenge (GC), one of the top MMA promotions in California, is proud to present a world title match at this weekend's "Reality Check," live from the Wendover Nugget Hotel & Casino in Wendover, NV. The card takes place live this Saturday, October 24th.

10 action-packed bouts are scheduled, including a Gladiator Challenge Welterweight title fight between the man who holds the belt, Jake "The Snake" Paul, and hungry challenger Brad "Dirty Pop" Johnson.

Also featured will be a heavyweight battle between Cobey Freeman and Lupe Lara, as well as great young fighters Willis Ferguson and the Espittia brothers. Gates open at 5:00 p.m., with fights beginning at 7:00 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets for "Reality Check" at www.virtualboxoffice.com, or call (888) 826-8858.

Jake "The Snake" Paul (14-13) has tangled with well-known veterans of the fight game with UFC, WEC, EliteXC experience, including Mike Dolce, Mike Pierce, Rick Story, Jaime Jara, Floyd Sword, and Blas Avena. Nothing Brad Johnson throws at him is going to faze the grizzled Paul, and he will be looking to finish his less experienced counterpart.

Brad "Dirty Pop" Johnson (10-5) is a great wrestler who utilizes his ground skills in order to submit his opponents. On the rise in MMA, he is looking to use the GC Welterweight belt as a springboard to bigger things in the sport. Either way, this fight has the potential to be an absolute barn-burner.

With all the exciting bouts scheduled for this card, Wendover fight fans will be in for a huge treat. "We are very glad to be back at the Nugget," exclaimed GC Owner/Promoter Tedd Williams. "The fans there are great, and we're excited to bring the Gladiator Challenge brand of fights back to them!"
