The official weigh in event for WEC 43: "Cerrone vs. Henderson" is now in the books after the 20 fighters set to compete tomorrow night tipped the scale today at the Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio, Texas.

For the most part, the event went off without a hitch.

Undercard replacement fighter Mackens Semerzier was the only fighter to have an issue. He came in a half a pound heavy on his first attempt to hit the 146-pound mark for his featherweight contest against Wagnney Fabiano. However, “The Menace” was successful in shedding the extra half pound on his second try.

Each of the other 19 fighters made their respective weights on their first attempt, including main event interim lightweight championship contenders Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone and Ben "Smooth" Henderson.

“We're looking forward to delivering an explosive night of world class MMA action on CBS,” said Scott Coker, Founder and CEO of Strikeforce. “We have the world's # 1 fighter, Fedor, making his network primetime debut against an undefeated powerhouse in Brett Rogers and, with the stars lined up for the remainder of the card, it is bound to be an exciting night of television.”

The following four primetime matchups are confirmed for CBS/ STRIKEFORCE/ M-1 GLOBAL SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS on Nov. 7:

  • Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko vs. Brett “The Grim” Rogers
  • Jake Shields vs. Jason “Mayhem” Miller (Middleweight Title Fight)
  • Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi vs. Rameau Thierry “The African Assassin” Sokoudjo
  • Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum vs. Antonio “Big Foot” Silva

(All bouts are pending approval by the Illinois Athletic Commission.)

FEDOR “THE LAST EMPEROR” EMELIANENKO vs. BRETT “THE GRIM” ROGERS:

Simply referred to as “Fedor” by fans around the world, the 6-foot, 235-pound Russian is one of the most dominant fighters in the sport. A master of the Russian military combat system, Sambo, he boasts a record of 30 wins, one loss, no draws with 16 wins by submission, seven knockouts and seven decisions. His opponent, undefeated American, 28-year-old Brett Rogers (10-0) stands 6-feet, 5-inches tall, weighs 265 pounds and brings two of the heaviest hands in the sport to the cage. Both Fedor and Rogers' last victories came against former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski.

JAKE SHIELDS vs. JASON “MAYHEM” MILLER:

In the night's middleweight title fight (185 pounds), Jake Shields (23-4-1) squares off against Jason “Mayhem” Miller (22-6). Shields, widely considered one of the best fighters in the world, brings an impressive 12-fight win streak to the cage, six of his last seven coming by way of first round submission. Most recently, he defeated world-ranked middleweight “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler in his Strikeforce debut on June 6. His opponent, Miller, a fellow submission expert, is one of MMA's most exciting fighters. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai specialist is the host of MTV's reality series “Bully Beatdown” and trains with two of the sport's most recognizable fighters, Randy “The Natural” Couture and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. He currently has 13 submission victories on his resume.

GEGARD “THE DREAMCATCHER” MOUSASI vs. RAMEAU THIERRY “THE AFRICAN ASSASSIN” SOKOUDJOU:

Gegard Mousasi and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou will face one another in the night's light heavyweight (205 pounds) bout. Mousasi (26-2-1) of Leiden, Netherlands, recently scored his 13th consecutive victory on August 15, 2009 by winning his US debut and the Strikeforce light heavyweight title in a first round victory over defending champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral on SHOWTIME®. Sokoudjou (7-4), known to his fans as “The African Assassin,” has scored six of his seven wins by knockouts and brings an impressive striking game to the cage.

FABRICIO “VAI CAVALO” WERDUM vs. ANTONIO “JUNIOR” SILVA:

Fabricio "Vai Cavalo" Werdum will face Antonio "Junior" Silva in a matchup of two promising Brazilian heavyweights. Werdum is a two-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion and a submission expert while Silva has nine KOs in his 13 victories. Werdum, a former PRIDE and UFC standout, is coming off an impressive first round submission victory in his Strikeforce debut on Aug. 15 over veteran Mike Kyle. Silva, a fellow 6-foot-4 Brazilian, will be making his Strikeforce debut after compiling a remarkable 13-1 record since he turned pro in 2005.

SHOWTIME Sports will produce the four-fight event with host Gus Johnson calling the action and MMA legend Frank Shamrock and Mauro Ranallo serving as color analysts. The executive producer is David Dinkins, Jr.

UFC 104: Ben Rothwell is somebody

Quoteworthy:

“I’m ecstatic to be here finally … I didn’t want to be one of those guys who was just happy to get into the UFC. You know, you see a lot of these guys that come and go, and that just isn’t me. My objective all along has been to come into the UFC as a somebody … and then finish my career there. The only way you can finish your career there is if you win fights and make a name for yourself. Obviously I’ve done something right because they’ve put me on the poster and made me (a part of) the co-main event…. I feel great about the fight … I want to be fighting with the guys that are names in the UFC. I want to be a name in the UFC, as well. That’s the only way — you’ve got to be in there fighting the guys that people know. So I’m very excited for the fight.”

Former International Fight League (IFL) heavyweight standout "Big" Ben Rothwell talks about what it means to him to make his promotional debut against Cain Velasquez in the co main event at UFC 104: "Machida vs. Shogun" on Oct. 24. The Miletich Fighting Systems (MFS) product has 36 professional fights in a career that dates back to 2001. He has just one loss in his last 15 fights, which was courtesy of an Andrei Arlovski knockout at Affliction: "Banned" in July 2008. He has certainly paid his dues and taken the long road to the Octagon. Does he have what it takes to compete against the big dogs or will Velasquez send him a rude message that he doesn’t belong in the suddenly talent-rich division?

UFC Quick Quote: Rampage Jackson already has additional movie offers

Posted: 09 Oct 2009 10:34 AM PDT

Last King of Memphis

“It's cool doing this movie! It is fun, but lots of work. I am playing a character that I thought was the coolest man alive growing up. I used to walk around my house pretending I was B.A. Baracus, reciting his lines to my family and friends. It proves to me how good God is. I can't say [when I'll fight next]. I have other movie offers already and I really miss my kids, it's a lot easier on your family doing movies then at a ten week fight camp. I really have to think things through. I'm not saying that I don't want to fight (but) we’ll see what the future holds.”

–Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson checks in with Triumph United from the set of the new A-Team movie in Vancouver where “Rampage” is cast as B.A. Baracus in a role made famous by Mr. T in the mid 80’s. Sounds like the gravy train is making a few more stops in Memphis according to Jackson and if he does indeed have incoming movie roles not named “Midnight Meat Train 2,” it may be some time before we see the current Ultimate Fighter coach back inside the Octagon.

Gegard Mousasi vs Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou non-title fight booked for Nov. 7 Strikeforce event

Posted: 09 Oct 2009 08:44 AM PDT

Mixed martial arts fans who were disappointed that Gegard Mousasi and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou weren’t meeting in DREAM’s “Super Hulk Tournament,” fear not. “The Dreamcatcher” and “The African Assassin” will instead throw hands at the Nov. 7 “Fedor vs. Rogers” Strikeforce event on CBS.

Unfortunately for the Cameroonian, it won’t be for the Armenian’s light heavyweight title.

MMAmania.com has been able to confirm a Sherdog.com report that upon approval by the Illinois State Athletic Commission, Mousasi vs. Sokoudjou will complete the televised portion of the Strikeforce/CBS event, set to air on network television from the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

The two were paired up for a showdown at DREAM 11 as part of the “Super Hulk” semifinals on Oct. 6, until a shoulder injury prevented Mousasi from competing.

He was quickly replaced by the brittle but reliable Bob “The Beast” Sapp, who was unceremoniously destroyed by Sokoudjou in the first round of their contest.

Sokoudjou can use that momentum to try and erase the memories of his recent stateside endeavors. After getting bounced from the UFC after losses to Lyoto Machida and Luis Arthur Cane, the former PRIDE slugger was choked out by Renato “Babalu” Sobral at the January 24 Affliction event.

He rebounded with two wins under the DREAM promotion, first over Jan Norte at DREAM 9 back in May and then the aforementioned TKO over Sapp.

But his return to the states will not be an easy one.

After capturing the DREAM middleweight belt last year, Mousasi embarked on an ambitious 2009 campaign with a move to light heavyweight. In the preliminary round of the “Super Hulk Tournament” at DREAM 9, the 24 year-old Armenian/Dutch fighter easily dispatched of Mark Hunt with a first round submission.

In what was considered perhaps his biggest challenge to date, he scored an emphatic victory over Renato Sobral in his American debut, demolishing the veteran grappler in 60 seconds to capture the Strikeforce 205-pound title at the August 15 “Carano vs. Cyborg” event.

And as it stands, that title will remain around his waist, win or lose.

Headlining the Nov. 7 Strikeforce/CBS event will be a heavyweight clash between former PRIDE champion Fedor "The Last Emperor" Emelianenko and undefeated knockout artist Brett "The Grim" Rogers.

Several of the promotion's other top fighters will be in action on the card as well, including a Strikeforce middleweight title bout pitting Jake Shields vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller for the 185-pound belt recently vacated by budding film star Cung Le.

TUF 10 ratings fall for week four — but still strong enough to outdraw MLB playoffs

Posted: 09 Oct 2009 08:43 AM PDT

Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), as expected, delivered a ratings bonanza when it finally managed to get former YouTube brawler and Elite XC star Kimbo Slice inside the Octagon on episode three.

And, as expected, the ratings took a significant hit once Slice was knocked out of the competition in the following episode. Now before you start writing your eulogy for the Spike TV reality show, know that its depleted numbers were still enough to outdraw the MLB playoffs.

Here’s how the ratings compare in the Men 18-34 category for Wednesday :

The Ultimate Fighter 10: 1.1 Million
New York Yankees vs. Minnesota Twins: 948,000
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. St Louis Cardinals: 903,000
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Colorado Rockies: 488,000

While 1.1 million viewers was a far cry from last week’s 6.1, TUF 10 was still the most watched program in all of television in the category of Men 18-34 for the fourth straight week. Not too shabby, considering the show is in its tenth season.

Still, unless Kimbo is able to find a way back into the cage, expect those numbers to slowly erode. And the UFC had better pull out all the stops for season eleven if they want to continue to draw over the one million mark.

UFC 108: Dan Lauzon vs Cole Miller possible for Jan. 2

Posted: 09 Oct 2009 08:16 AM PDT

Bout agreements have been distributed for a possible lightweight match up between Dan Lauzon and Cole Miller at UFC 108, which is scheduled to take place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2, 2010 according to MixedMartialArts.com.

“The Upgrade” (12-2) will return to action after a back injury forced him to withdraw from his scheduled fight against Rafaello "Tractor" Oliveira at UFC 103 back on Sept. 19 in Dallas.

The East Bridgewater, Mass., native was extracted from the rubble that was Affliction MMA shortly after the “Trilogy” event went belly up and his fight against Chris Horodecki was canceled when the promotion decided to pull the plug on its fighting endeavors.

Lauzon — the younger brother of current UFC lightweight and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 alum Joe Lauzon — has strung together an impressive eight-fight win streak since suffering back-to-back losses more than two years ago (Spencer Fisher and Deividas Taurosevicius).

"The Upgrade" was the youngest fighter ever to compete inside the Octagon (18) when he accepted a fight against the much more experienced (and older) Fisher at UFC 64 back in Oct. 2006, which he dropped via first round technical knockout.

Now he’s back to try his luck one more time inside the Octagon — but don’t expect a very warm welcome from Cole Miller upon his return.

“Magrino” is a talented submission specialist who fell just short of the TUF finals, eventually succumbing to Dan’s older brother Joe Lauzon after being rattled with an illegal punch to the back of his head in the TUF 5 semifinals.

Since his UFC debut in June of 2007, Miller has gone 4-2, including an impressive submission victory over exiled lightweight Jorge Gurgel at UFC 86 and then the quick work of Junie Browning at UFC Fight Night 18 last April.

While his most recent appearance ended with a TKO loss to undefeated TUF champion Efrain Escudero, Miller is still considered one of the division’s brighter prospects.

In short, expect an exciting fight from these two hungry up-and-comers.

UFC 108 is expected to serve as the promotion's traditional "year-end" event because the Christmas holiday falls on the last weekend of 2009. Former light heavyweight champion Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort has been courted to challenge current division deity Anderson "The Spider" Silva in the night's main event.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more information on UFC 108 as it becomes available.

Strikeforce books Shane Del Rosario vs Brandon Cash for Nov. 6 ‘Challengers’ event

Posted: 09 Oct 2009 07:49 AM PDT

Former WBO Muay Thai champion Shane Del Rosario (8-0) and undefeated War Gods veteran Brandon Cash (5-0), are scheduled to meet at Strikeforce Challengers “Evangelista vs. Gurgel,” which is slated for the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., on Nov. 6.

After steamrolling his way through the ShoXC “Elite Challenger Series” in 2008, Del Rosario was acquired by Strikeforce in the Pro Elite sale earlier this year.

The Team Oyama standout was forced to sit on the sidelines to nurse a broken hand at the end of 2008, but quickly returned to action back in January, barreling over any and all competition under the M-1 banner and remaining perfect in three appearances.

All eight of his victories have been stoppages — one by submission and seven by technical knockout. And of those bouts, only one has seen the second round.

Standing in his way is the also-debuting Brandon Cash.

The former wrestling standout out of Buchannan High is coming off an impressive technical knockout win over Steve Gavin at Palace Fighting Championships in February of this year.

Cash is known for his wrestling but hasn’t let his mat pedigree stop him from ending four of his five fights by way of TKO, including a perfect 3-0 run in the War Gods promotion.

Strikeforce Challengers 4 is set to be headlined by a lightweight battle between seven fight UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel and undefeated Fresno resident Billy Evangelista. Jesse “JT” Money and Luke Rockhold will also compete on the televised portion of the card.
