MFC 22 ‘Payoff’ results and quick recap: Lutter, McKee victorious

Posted: 02 Oct 2009 10:36 PM PDT

The Canadian based mixed martial arts promotion Maximum Fighting Championships (MFC) hosted the twentieth event of its existence earlier tonight (Oct. 2) from the River Cree Resort and Casino in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The premium satellite and cable channel HDNet aired the action live, but for those who missed it, here’s how it all went down.

In the featured fight of the night, Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald and Travis “The Serial Killer” Lutter squared off in a battle of former UFC middleweight standouts looking to get their careers back on track after dropping their last two bouts inside the Octagon.

McDonald — a hometown favorite in Alberta — had a lot of trouble with the methodical Lutter. “The Athlete’s” gameplan was clearly to stay away from Lutter’s world class ground game, but he was pretty unsuccessful in his attempt to do so.

“The Serial Killer” was able to control the first two rounds of the fight by maintaining dominant positions on the ground. He mounted the Canadian fighter numerous times and also nearly finished the fight on a couple separate occasions with rear naked choke attempts.

MacDonald tried to mount a late rally in the third round against a tired Lutter, but it was a clear case of too little, too late as he was unable to finish the fight and consequently came up short on the judge’s scorecards.

Company lightweight champion Antonio McKee was all set to defend his title in the co-main event against journeyman and thirty-one fight veteran Carlo Prater, but the bout was switched to a non-title affair at the last minute when both fighters failed to make weight.

McKee, who is the self proclaimed “best wrestler in MMA,” has a reputation for grinding out his wins by using the dreaded “lay and pray” technique, and he lived up to that label in this fight en route to a unanimous decision victory.

“El Nigro” scored takedowns at will and forced Prater to fight nearly the entire three rounds off his back. It wasn’t all that exciting, but that doesn’t take away from the domination laid down by the champion in this fight.

Six other UFC veterans – Marvin Eastman, Pete Spratt, Mike Nickels, David Heath, Luigi Fioravanti, and John Alessio – were also in actCion on the card.

Check out the full results for MFC 22: “Payoff” below:

Travis Lutter defeated Jason MacDonald via unanimous decision
Antonio McKee defeated Carlo Prater via unanimous decision
John Alessio defeated Luigi Fioravanti via knockout (punch) at 1:34 of round three
Mike Nickels defeated David Heath via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:02 of round three
Ryan Jimmo defeated Marvin Eastman via split decision
Pete Spratt defeated Nathan Gunn via knockout (punch) at 4:19 of round two
Dwayne Lewis defeated Jared Kilkenny via technical knockout at 3:31 of round one
Jason Heit defeated Paapa Inkumusha via technical knockout at 4:59 of round two
Joe Christopher defeated Andrew Buckland via submission (guillotine choke) at 1:54 of round one
Nick Hrynchshyn defeaed Jesse MacDougall via technical knockout (strikes) at 4:29 of round two

Next up for the promotion is MFC 23: “Unstoppable” on December 4 at the same location, the River Cree Resort and Casino in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. That event will also air live on HDNet.

Dana White: Kimbo Slice vs Roy Nelson fight ’sucked’ on Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10

Quoteworthy:

"It's hard to say why, but some people have it and some don't, and Kimbo definitely does…. The fight (between Slice and Nelson) sucked. I wasn't happy with any of the fights the first three weeks, to be honest. I was disappointed by the way we came out of the gate in terms of the fights. But the fights really get better. By episode 8, believe me when I tell you, you're going to be going wild…. Hang in there, man. The season's not over yet. Stay tuned is all I'll tell you."

Despite an over-the-top (and shameless) media blitz earlier this week to promote episode three of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 on Spike TV, which featured YouTube sensation Kimbo Slice fighting Roy Nelson, UFC President Dana White admits after that fact that what was billed as “the biggest fight in Ultimate Fighter history” actually sucked. Nelson used his size and superior ground skills to smother Slice for most of the fight, scoring a second round technical knockout via strikes. However, it appeared to be Slice’s inability to get off his back and not Nelson’s repeated marshmallow-like blows that forced the referee to stop the action. Nonetheless, the episode went on the score crazy ratings, attracting 6.1 million viewers to become the fourth most-watched mixed martial arts bout ever on television in North America. White assures fans that the season, which has thus far featured three lackluster heavyweight bouts, will get better. Do you believe it?

DREAM 12: Yoshiro Maeda vs Chase Beebe scheduled for Oct. 25

Posted: 02 Oct 2009 11:11 AM PDT

DREAM has added a Featherweight showdown between two WEC veterans to its highly publicized inaugural caged fight card. Yoshiro Maeda (25-7-2) and Chase Beebe (12-4) will square off at DREAM 12 on Oct. 25 at Osaka Castle Hall in Osaka, Japan.

DREAM event producer, Keiichi Sasahara billed the bout as "a survival match between fighters who have fallen short in the Featherweight tourney." On a brighter note, he touted the potential for an enthralling contest, given the experience Maeda and Beebe possess competing in the cage.

A bona fide survival match, Maeda vs. Beebe pits two fighters in need of a compelling, decisive victory.

Maeda barely edged American Top Team prospect, Micah Miller, via unanimous decision in the opening round of the Featherweight GP before suffering a TKO loss to Hiroyuki Takaya in the quarterfinal. He most recently headlined DEEP – "Osaka Impact" on August 30 and notched an unremarkable DQ victory over Kleber Koike.

Beebe has run into a rough patch after kicking off his professional career on a high gear. Currently on a three-fight skid, he lost the WEC bantamweight title to Miguel Torres at WEC 32 and followed up with a split decision loss to Will Ribeiro at WEC 34 before exiting the organization.

After his inexplicable, last-minute withdrawal from his UWC headlining bout against Mike Easton, setback followed him across the Pacific. In his DREAM debut, he suffered a deflating TKO loss to MMA neophyte, Joe Warren in the opening round of the Featherweight tourney.

Maeda, who trains out of Osaka, will be the hometown favorite in this fight. He hopes to bounce back from the recent streak of uninspired performance and make a strong case for the appearance in the Dynamite! Event on New Year's Eve.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com as DREAM 12 takes shape in the coming weeks.

In the main event of the evening, two of the top 5 lightweights in the world collide in a highly anticipated rematch as DREAM Lightweight champion Joachim Hansen (19-7-1) puts his title on the line against Shinya Aoki (21-4). Hansen claimed the title on July 21, 2008 when he defeated Aoki by first round TKO at Dream 5. In other action, the DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix will come to a conclusion as Bibiano Fernanders (5-2) faces Joe Warren (2-0) and Hiroyuki Takaya (11-6-1) meets Hideo Tokoro (22-16-1) in semi-final action with the winners advancing to face each other in the final later in the evening. Also in the semi-finals of the Super Hulk tournament, Hong Man Choi (2-2) meets Ikuhisa Minowa (42-20-8) and Bob Sapp(10-5) squares off with Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (6-4).

UFC 108: Rashad Evans vs Thiago Silva in the works for Jan. 2

Posted: 02 Oct 2009 08:25 AM PDT

Evans vs. Silva

Former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans (13-1-1) has agreed to face Brazilian smashing machine Thiago Silva (14-1) at UFC 108, which is scheduled to take place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2, 2010, MMAmania.com can confirm.

Aside from their similar records, Evans and Silva share another common thread: Both lost their undefeated records after being systematically destroyed by the urine-powered karate of Lyoto Machida.

“Sugar” was the most recent victim of “The Dragon” in a shoop-worthy knockout that saw Evans go limp at UFC 98 back in May.

Despite the loss, The Ultimate fighter (TUF) 10 coach is a bona fide star. In addition to knocking Chuck Liddell back into the “Ice” ages, he dismantled Forrest Griffin at UFC 92 to usurp the 205-pound title.

In fact, the talented wrestler was all set to inch his way back into the title picture at UFC 107 against opposing TUF coach Quinton Jackson, however; “Rampage” got bit by the acting bug and skipped town to drive a black van.

Like Evans, Silva was smashing his way through the ranks of light heavyweight and was one fight away from a title shot until Machida stiffened him at UFC 94 last January.

While the Brazilian holds a Jiu-Jitsu black belt, he’s known for separating people from their consciousness, like he did in his TKO victory over Evans’ friend and team mate Keith Jardine at UFC 102.

A judge’s decision in this one is almost unthinkable.

UFC 108 is expected to serve as the promotion's traditional "year-end" event because the Christmas holiday falls on the last weekend of 2009. Former light heavyweight champion Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort has been courted to challenge current division deity Anderson “The Spider” Silva in the night’s main event.
