UFC 108: Carlos Condit vs Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley possible for Jan. 2

Posted: 15 Oct 2009 07:19 PM PDT

Former WEC welterweight champion, Carlos Condit (24-5), is in talks to take on former Cage Rage 170-pound kingpin, Paul “Semtex” Daley (22-8-2), at UFC 108 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2, 2010, according to Fighters Only magazine.

Condit recently redeemed himself after suffering his first loss in nearly three years, a competitive split decision to top 170-pound contender, Martin Kampmann, at UFC Fight Night 18 back in April. The "Natural Born Killer" was able to somehow survive a brutal first round onslaught dished out by Jake Ellenberger at UFC Fight Night 19 last month to storm back and capture a hard-fought split decision.

The win over Ellenberger was more than likely tougher than Condit, as well as most fans, thought it would be … especially after his undefeated (5-0) and dominating run with Zuffa’s sister promotion.

And it’s not going to get any easier against the hard-hitting British brawler from Nottingham, England.

In fact, Daley actually flattened Kampmann — who had championship-contending hopes on the line — in his Octagon debut at UFC 103 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, on Sept. 19. The 26-year-old instantly vaulted himself to the upper echelon of welterweights after Mike Swick withdrew from the event.

He’ll be out to cement that status against another top-flight competitor in the division. However, the submission-prone Daley will have to be very aware, and careful, of the submission-savvy Condit if he has any shot at walking away a winner on fight night.

UFC 108 is expected to feature a main event between 185-pound division deity Anderson "The Spider" Silva defending his division title against former light heavyweight champion Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort. Another former 205-pound champion, Rashad Evans, will also likely return to action against another Brazilian, Thiago Silva, in the co-featured fight of the night.

Jamie Varner vs Donald Cerrone 2 could be next for WEC with Ben Henderson hurt

Posted: 15 Oct 2009 06:13 PM PDT

varner-cerrone.jpg

During last Saturday night’s five-round, back-and-forth WEC 43 main event between Ben “Smooth” Henderson and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone for the promotion’s interim lightweight title, both fighters left absolutely everything they had inside the cage.

It was an epic battle for the ages and a surefire candidate for “Fight of the Year” honors.

For Henderson the win meant he had earned himself an opportunity to unify the 155-pound title with a showdown opposite injured champion, Jamie Varner, during a future WEC event set for “The Worn’s” hometown of Phoenix, Ariz., in December.

It is a match up that would certainly have a great chance to live up to the high standard the WEC has set for main event fights so far in 2009.

However, Varner and Cerrone have waged a fierce verbal battle outside the cage since their initial encounter at WEC 38 earlier this year, which ended ugly (and early) via split decision because of fifth round foul from which Varner could not recover. He got the win from the judges, but he was ridiculed in the court of public opinion for how he handled the decision afterward.

So it seemed that with a win over Cerrone, Henderson had spoiled the chances of there being a grudge match anytime soon between “Cowboy” and Varner.

Not so fast.

It now appears that the fight between Henderson and Varner has possibly been put on hold. And there’s a chance that “Cowboy” could be stepping in as a replacement for Henderson, who suffered extreme dehydration after the fight last weekend.

In fact, Henderson reportedly collapsed in the locker room shortly after the match and was rushed to more than one hospital, needing multiple IVs to recover.

In addition, Henderson injured his left eye after eating an upkick in the last minute of the fight that split it open that will need time to heal.

Perhaps more time than the WEC is willing to wait.

Earlier today on ESPNs “MMA Live,” guest host and teammate of Donald Cerrone at Greg Jackson’s Submission Fighting, Rashad Evans, had this to say when asked if it looked like Henderson and Varner would still be fighting in December to unify the belts even in spite of “Smooth’s” medical issues:

“No it doesn’t, and it looks like “Cowboy” is going to go ahead and get the fight with Varner.”

Interesting “unofficial” news if it is indeed true. And either way, the promotion is in a win-win situation — Varner, Cerrone and Henderson all fighting, regardless of the order, have all the ingredients for more fireworks.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on this developing story.

Tyron Woodley vs Rudy Bears set to headline Strikeforce ‘Challengers’ in Kansas City on Nov. 20

NEW YORK (Oct. 15, 2009)-Fresh off a sparkling victory on Sept. 25, budding superstar and two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, undefeated Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (4-0) of St. Louis, will come back on Friday, Nov. 20, when he faces dangerous Rudy Bears (13-5) of Kansas City in the featured bout of an outstanding Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) card at historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City.

The highly regarded Woodley will be making his main event debut in the scheduled three-round, 5-minute welterweight (170 pounds) bout that will be one of five televised on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

Non-televised bouts in an event presented by San Jose, Calif.-based STRIKEFORCE, in association with Shamrock Promotions, will begin at 8 p.m. CT. Doors open at 7:15 CT. Tickets, starting at $35, are available at the Memorial Hall ticket office, online at Ticketmaster.com or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

In other SHOWTIME fights, also slated for three, 5-minute rounds:

Bobby Voelker (20-7), Kansas City, vs. Erik Apple (10-1), Newport Beach, Calif. (170 pounds); Aaron Rosa (12-2), San Antonio, Tex., vs. Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante (7-2), Rio De Janeiro (205 pounds); and in 135-pound women’s fights, Kerry Vera (1-0), San Diego, Calif., vs. Kim “Sugar Free” Couture (1-1), Las Vegas, Nev., and undefeated Sarah Kaufman (10-0), Victoria, British Columbia, vs. Takayo Hashi (12-1), Japan.

In his last outing, Woodley registered an impressive second-round submission (armbar) over former Tito Ortiz protégé, Zach Light fight at the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event in Tulsa, Okla. A popular up-and-comer, the 5-foot-9, 27-year-old Woodley, the 11th of 13 children raised mostly by a single mother, has won all his fights by submission.

The streaking Bears has won six in a row — five inside the distance — and eight of his last nine. Bears, who is making his STRIKEFORCE Challengers debut, is coming off a second-round TKO (punches) over Brendon Seguin on Aug. 28.

The promising Feijao, who has won all seven of his outings by stoppage, will be trying to rebound from one of the year’s biggest upsets. In an off-TV match last June 6, he lost by second-round TKO (punches) to Mike Kyle in St. Louis.

“That was a very disappointing night, but I’ve put it behind me,” Feijao said. “I appreciate this opportunity and I’ll be ready to go on Nov. 20. I owe it to STRIKEFORCE and the fans to show what I can really do.”

Rosa, who turned pro in November 2005, won his initial 10 starts before losing two in a row. He has won his last two fights, including a first-round submission (rear-naked choke) over Anthony Ruiz on May 15, 2009, in Fresno, Calif. Eight of Rosa’s 12 career wins have come by stoppage.

The Feijao-Rosa scrap smacks with importance. The winner could be in line to face STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi.

Voelker has won three of his last four starts and six of eight. A pro since February 2006, more than half of Voelker’s victories (12) have been the result of knockout or TKO.

Apple will be appearing for the first time before a paying audience since scoring perhaps a career-best triumph – a second-round submission over promising Matt Makowski on Aug. 28, 2008. Apple’s pro debut came in April 2003 and he competed regularly through August 2006. But he has fought only twice since. His lone defeat came in his effort before last to Brock Larson in March 2007.

Couture, the former wife of MMA legend Randy Couture, will be making her eagerly anticipated STRIKEFORCE and 2009 debut. After losing her first fight, Couture registered a 1:44, first-round TKO over Lina Kvokov on Nov. 21, 2008.

Vera also is seeking her second consecutive victory. She scored a three-round unanimous decision over Leslie Smith on May 15, 2009.

The undefeated Kaufman has won eight of her 10 starts by knockout. In her last outing, she outpointed tough Shayna “The Queen Of Spades” Baszler across three (five-minute) hard-fought rounds on the June 19 STRIKEFORCE Challengers card. A dancer since the age of two, the exciting, hard-hitting Kaufman also owns a points victory over promising Miesha Tate.

Hashi, a pro since April 2004, will enter the cage with an eight-fight winning streak.

Ricardo Funch vs Johny Hendricks set for UFC 107 on Dec. 12

Posted: 15 Oct 2009 03:15 PM PDT

Undefeated welterweight Ricardo Funch (7-0) will make his Octagon debut against decorated collegiate wrestling All American, Johny Hendricks (6-0), at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee, on Dec. 12.

And, like most up-and-coming mixed martial artists, making it to the big show is a dream come true.

"I always had the expectation of coming in to the UFC,” he said today to Terra.com.br. “I started to train four years ago and despite training everything, I focused on jiu-jitsu. I tried to become the most complete fighter I could. I have seven victories in seven MMA fights. I beat tough athletes and believed sooner or later the UFC would knock at my door. Thankfully it was sooner! I'm prepared. It’s my dream. It is what I want to do, representing my academy and Brazil.”

Funch’s UFC dream began while watching the legendary Royce Gracie effortlessly dominate the competition in early days of the sport with his unique brand of jiu-jitsu. He began to train locally and his since earned his purple belt while training at Team Link, which is run by former number one heavyweight contender, Gabriel Gonzaga.

Remarkably, he’s been able to do it all in just four years of training.

Funch revealed the opportunity came through Marco Alvan and “Napao” at Team Link — the pair talked to UFC Matchmaker Joe Silva about Funch and provided him with videos to see his talent. Thanks to that, a four-fight contract was signed and he will be part of the welterweight division.

Now the Brazilian fighter is set to debut against a very formidable opponent in Hendricks less than two months from now. Hendricks, a incredibly gifted wrestler, scored a big 30-second win in his promotional debut against The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 winner, Amir Sadollah, at UFC 101 back in August.

For Funch, however, he sees Hendricks as a fighter who is perfectly tailored for his fighting style.

"My adversary has already won several wrestling tournaments,” he said. “He is a tough guy on the mat and has with heavy hands. But this is a fight that fits exactly with my style. He wants to take the fight to the floor and so do I. I believe this match ends up on the ground. I train to finish up! I'm a purple belt and believe in my ground game.”

He certainly does not lack confidence.

Shinya Aoki: Tatsuya Kawajiri’s title challenge was (yawn) predictable

Posted: 15 Oct 2009 09:42 AM PDT

Props: DREAM Official

Quoteworthy:

“I figured he would [call me out], but it made me laugh because his action was so predictable. During training, I told Caol Uno that I would borrow his words to retort if Kawajiri challenged me like that. Then, lo and behold, Kawajiri comes out dead serious. I just took it all in stride, because, come on, how did he think I would react? Kawajiri is so forthright, while I am just really devious. I think Kawajiri is a good fighter, so I can see myself fighting him; however, I do not know for sure yet. If I feel like fighting him, I will. But that’s something I decide — unfortunately, Kawajiri won’t have any say in the matter.”

On the heels of his submission win over Joachim Hansen, DREAM lightweight champion Shinya Aoki (22-4) responds to the title challenge issued by Tatsuya Kawajiri (25-5-2) after his TKO win over Melchor Manibusan at DREAM 11 on October 6. “Crusher” wants a piece of “The Tobikan Judan” at FieLDS Dynamite!! on New Year’s Eve, but the submission specialist is looking to take some time off. Hopefully the boys over at FEG can ratchet up the hype and get these two signed for Dec. 31. If so, who ya’ got?

Post-op Wanderlei Silva following in some pretty ugly footsteps

Quoteworthy:

“Master Rafael [Cordeiro is] two or three years older than me and when I started, he was already a black belt. He's very ugly, but he was famous and had a beautiful girlfriend, so it gave me hope that I could do well one day too. He was very good in fights and Muay Thai, then he started in jiu-jitsu and did great too, then in Karate too. He's very talented. I never saw a guy more talented in training or leading the training. Rafael was unbelievable. On the other hand, Pelé also inspired me. He was the baddest man I every met. I never met a guy as bad as he is. We had no way of training with him. He beat you up in training and didn't care.”

Former Pride FC Middleweight Champion Wanderlei Silva talks about the road to mixed martial arts stardom that began back in Brazil under some pretty difficult circumstances. The 34-year-old “Axe Murderer” has lost five of his last six fights, dating back to 2006. He hasn't been fighting creampuffs; however, and banked a “Fight of the Night” bonus for his war with Rich Franklin at UFC 99. Where does he go with a win over Yoshihiro Akiyama if and when they meet in early 2010? More importantly, where does he go with a loss?
