UFC 108: Junior dos Santos vs Gabriel Gonzaga possible for Jan. 2

Posted: 12 Oct 2009 07:36 PM PDT

Cigano vs Napao

The traditional “year-end” show for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) keeps getting bigger.

Literally.

Hard-hitting heavyweights Junior dos Santos and Gabriel Gonzaga are expected to tangle at UFC 108, which is scheduled to take place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2, 2010, according to Fighters.com.

“Cigano” recently cemented his place among the heavyweight big guns when he had former Pride FC star Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic pleading for “No Mas!” after a three-round drubbing at UFC 103 just last month. The Brazilian slugger is now undefeated (3-0) inside the Octagon with three straight technical knockout finishes.

Gonzaga, on the other hand, warmly welcomed Chris Tuchscherer to the promotion with a devastating first round ball bash at UFC 102 back in August. The Minnesota Martial Arts Academy-trained fighter was given time to recover; however, he returned to get utterly smashed shortly thereafter by a relentless “Napao.”

It marked the third win in four attempts for Gonzaga. But the former number one contender has struggled against top competition. He’ll try to shuck that label once again when he squares off against his fellow countryman on fight night.

UFC 108 is expected to feature a main event between 185-pound division deity Anderson "The Spider" Silva defending his division title against former light heavyweight champion Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort. Another former 205-pound champion, Rashad Evans, will also likely return to action against another Brazilian, Thiago Silva, in the co-featured fight of the night.

Dan Hardy: Mike Swick has ‘no clue’ about ‘the beating’ he will get at UFC 105

Quoteworthy:

“I have read some articles on the internet saying that I may lack the “killer instinct” in this fight with Swick because I’ve hung out with Mike and we get along very well. Not gonna happen…. A couple of days of pleasant conversation with Swick won’t save him from the beating I am going to give him next month … on the whole, it is easier for me to prepare for Swick than it is for Swick to prepare for me. I’ve only had three fights in the UFC and I’ve not shown even half of my skills yet. There are lots of things I do well that Swick has no clue about, whereas Swick has been in the UFC for four years and I know exactly what he can and can’t do. I think this is the fight of the night. My style will gel very well with Mike’s. We both come from a kickboxing background, we both have very fast strikes and there’s so much on the line for us both.”

Welterweight contender Dan Hardy likes his chances heading into his number one welterweight contender eliminator match against Mike Swick at UFC 105: “Couture vs. Vera” from the Manchester Evening News (MEN) Arena in Manchester, England, on Nov. 14. “The Outlaw” feels his relative inexperience inside the Octagon and hidden skills will carry him to victory on fight night. And, in the process, be impressive enough to earn him a future title shot against reigning 170-pound champion, Georges St. Pierre. Does Hardy truly have the tricks up his sleeve to topple “Quick” or will his bluff get called?

MMA Big Show: ‘Full Force’ preview and lineup for Oct. 24 event

Posted: 12 Oct 2009 02:36 PM PDT

Indiana (USA): A heavyweight elimination bout headlines MMA Big Show's next event offering, "FULL FORCE," live at the Belterra Casino Resort & Spa in Belterra , Indiana on Saturday, October 24th. Also featured will be the first professional women's bout in Big Show history.

All told, 15 bouts are scheduled to entertain fight fans, and the "FULL FORCE" action is sure to be hard-hitting. Tickets are priced at $25, $40, and $45, and are available through Ticketmaster, as well as http://www.mmabigshow.com/.

21 and over only, please.

With a shot at current MMA Big Show Heavyweight Champion Josh Hendricks at stake, former heavyweight champion Brian Heden will look to stop the challenge being brought by 6'6" 265 lbs. up-and-comer Steve "Lambchop" Banks. Originally scheduled to be a title fight between Hendricks and Banks, the champ had to pull out due to a bad bout with bronchitis. Heden eagerly stepped up to take on Banks and get a chance at the belt he feels is rightfully his.

“When Brian lost his belt, he had slipped on the mat and Hendricks was able to capitalize on that” explained Big Show Owner/Promoter Jason Appleton. “These guys are big, and they sweat profusely and that mat gets wet really quick. I’m not saying Hendricks didn’t win the fight at all, I like Hendricks and he’s the Champ, no doubt about it. I just can’t help but wonder how things would have ended differently had Brian not slipped.”

As a result, Heden and Banks will go to war with the winner getting a shot at Hendricks for the strap.

In the other co-main event of the evening, history will be made as MMA Big Show promotes its first-ever professional women's bout. Marissa Caldwell is a very tough female fighter out of Cincinnati , OH who trains with the likes of Big Show Welterweight Champion Roger Bowling and Victor O’Donnell. A smart and talented fighter, she displays a very capable ground game that strikes fear in the hearts of opponents.

Standing on the other side of the cage will be the more seasoned Jan Finney. Can the well-toned and in-shape fighter overcome the newcomer with natural submission abilities? Trainer and Team Vision owner Rod Housely says that Caldwell is "ready," and fans seem to think she has more than enough in her arsenal to take on Jan Finney. On October 24th, we'll all find out who is better.

Also featured in an anticipated welterweight bout, recent MMA Big Show signee Keilan O’Daniels will make his debut against Big Show veteran Jared "Honey" Combs.

O'Daniels possesses an impressive list of amateur wrestling accolades, which include being a three-time Pennsylvania section champ, three-time Pennsylvania regional champ, a two-time state runner-up, and a one-time state champion, with an overall high school record of 133-13-1. Basically, the ground is his domain, and with fights against UFC veterans Brock Larson and Chad Reiner, he has the experience to make his mark in MMA

Now signed to Jason Appleton Management, Keilan is looking to make some waves in the 170 lbs. division of MMA Big Show starting on October 24th against Combs. Combs also comes from an impressive wrestling background, and is known to be a fierce striker as well. O'Daniel’s first fight in the Big Show cage won’t be an easy task.

In an amateur bout, Big Show Amateur Lightweight Champion Chris “The Samurai” Bennett (14-1) will drop down a weight class to face undefeated Ian Snowberger (11-0) at 145 lbs. Bennett is dropping a weight class after completely dominating the amateur weight class.

The "FULL FORCE" fight card will feature:

- Brian Heden vs. Steve "Lambchop" Banks (heavyweights)

- Marissa Caldwell vs. Jan Finney (featherweights)

- Keilan O'Daniels vs. Jared "Honey" Combs (welterweights)

- Jon Akers vs. Brandon Walker (bantamweights)

WEC 44: Shane Roller vs Danny Castillo with Alex Karalexis hurt

Posted: 12 Oct 2009 10:15 AM PDT

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) rounded out the main card for its next event, WEC 44: “Brown vs. Aldo” over the weekend by announcing that four-fight WEC veteran Shane Roller (6-2) will fill in for the injured Alex Karalexis to face Danny Castillo (8-2) on the Versus telecast.

Roller has won three out of four fights under the WEC banner with the lone loss coming by first round technical knockout to the new interim lightweight title holder Ben Henderson back in April at WEC 40.

His three victories inside the WEC cage came against Todd Moore at WEC 35 by first round guillotine choke, Mike Budnik at WEC 37 by first round guillotine choke and in his most recent fight he was able to out score Marcus Hicks with a unanimous decision win at WEC 42.

The 30-year-old Oklahoma resident boasts a strong wrestling attack with solid submission finishing ability with half of his career wins coming by way of tapout.

He’ll have his hands full with Castillo though, who has also put together a record of (3-1) during his time with the WEC. In his last fight at WEC 42, Castillo picked apart an extremely tough and previously unbeaten Ricardo Lamas on his way to a late second round technical knockout stoppage.

“Cowboy” Cerrone is responsible for Castillo’s only career loss after submitting the Sacramento resident with a first round armbar in front of his home crowd at WEC 34 last June.

Like Roller, Castillo also has some decent wrestling and submission skills. The two fighters are very similar in that regard, but Castillo has a much better stand up game with plenty of knockout power, having finished two of his last three opponents with strikes.

WEC 44 is set to go down on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 9 p.m. ET on the Versus Network from "The Pearl" at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will feature a main event featherweight title bout between champion Mike Thomas Brown and feared Brazilian striker Jose “Junior” Aldo.

Former UFC ligthweights Manny “The Pitbull” Gamburyan and Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia are also slated to due battle in the night’s co-main event.
